People Helping Animals | PAWS 2012 Report to the Community
A Personal Message from Our Leadership
Dear Friends,
We are pleased to present PAWS 2012 Report
to the Community — a celebration of the
thousands of lives touched by the work of
PAWS’ staff and volunteers last year. Inside you
will find a summary of the animals’ lives saved
and people’s lives bettered as a result of your
support.
While the numbers summarizing our work are
impressive, it is the individual stories behind
each of those digits that truly reveal PAWS’
importance. For every picture or story within
these pages that brings joy to your heart, there
are thousands more just like them. All are
possible because of your generosity.
In the following pages, you’ll also see how
PAWS remains a strong and financially sound
organization. Your support — combined with
our prudent fiscal policies, continued recovery
of the investment market, and record-high
adoption rates — gives us reason to be
optimistic that PAWS will be here to serve the
community for many years to come.
Equally as important to PAWS’ success is
the heart and hands of our volunteer force.
Without them, we simply could not care for the
thousands of animals who arrive at our doors
each year.
Whether it’s the person who found their best
friend in a cat or dog adopted from PAWS, the
distressed resident who had somewhere to
turn when they found an injured wild animal,
or the child whose passion for animal welfare
was ignited through our “Kids Who Care”
elementary school curriculum, PAWS touched
thousands of lives in countless ways with your
help in 2012. Thank you.
With gratitude,
PAWS Helps Animals Find Their Way Home
For 45 years, PAWS has been providing humane
and expert care to hundreds of thousands of
animals with nowhere else to turn. Whether it’s
finding new homes for abandoned cats and
dogs, or saving the lives of orphaned or injured
wildlife, PAWS continues to make a profound
impact in our community.
The key to our mission is compassion; PAWS
cares for those in need, and provides a voice for
those who have none.
Thanks to you, 2012 was a remarkable year.
• PAWS remains the only full-service,
emergency wildlife hospital in Washington
State. As such, PAWS is often the only option
for sick, injured or orphaned wildlife. In 2012,
PAWS cared for 2,928 wild animals across 145
different species. Of these animals, 22 were
classified as species of concern or sensitive
species.
• PAWS successfully treated and released
822 wild animals in 2012. From three Black
Bear cubs returned to their native environment
in Oregon, to seven seals returned to Puget
Sound, PAWS was able to change the lives
of several hundred wild animals. The staff at
PAWS continues to “think outside of the box”
when developing new methods and protocols
for the care of these remarkable animals. This
includes developing new systems of caging,
creating more complete and nutritious diets,
and modifying the campus environment to best
serve these incredible animals.
A joyous guardian celebrates with his Pit Bull, Angel,
who had been missing for more than a year. Staff
reunited this pair, along with more than 400 other
animals and their grateful guardians, in 2012.
• PAWS found loving new homes for 3,267
cats and dogs in 2012, while reuniting 425
lost animals with their grateful guardians.
PAWS Companion Animal Services continued
to innovate in 2012, creating promotional
strategies and communication tools that
raised the number of animal adoptions.
Through media outreach and an increased
presence in the community, PAWS surpassed
all adoption goals for the year.
• PAWS Cat City posted record numbers in
the second year at its new location in Seattle’s
University District. Adoptions at the facility
were up a remarkable 62 percent over previous
years, with 1,391 cats and kittens adopted.
PAWS Cat City now accounts for more than 70
percent of all feline adoptions, completing an
average of five adoptions each day.
3
PAWS Helps People Help Animals
“People helping animals (and vice versa).”
Our credo says it all. With a staff of dedicated
professionals, and an army of passionate
volunteers, PAWS operates the largest fullservice
care facility in the Pacific Northwest for
both wild and domestic animals.
With you as our partner, PAWS continues to
cultivate a culture of caring. PAWS is a place
where the community can experience both
the joys and benefits of having healthy, caring
relationships with animals.
These are just some of the ways your support
brought people together with animals in 2012:
• PAWS continued to break records in 2012,
placing 1,624 animals into foster care. This
includes a record number of kitten fosters,
with a total of 1,095. Foster care continues to
be the most effective tool in expanding the
PAWS adoption program. Using the model of
a “shelter without walls,” the foster program
allows us to dramatically increase the number
of animals cared for without expansion of our
physical campus.
• PAWS fielded more than 12,000 phone calls
from the community on topics ranging from
dog and cat adoptions to wildlife rescue.
• PAWS Wildlife Center continued to reach
out to the community in 2012 with off-site
trainings, informational sessions, and town
hall meetings conducted for both animal care
professionals as well as the general public. With
topics ranging from “how to manage wildlife
in your backyard,” to education sessions with
wildlife control officers and other animal care
specialists, PAWS continues to lead the way in
championing for animals.
• PAWS performed 508 low-cost spay/
neuter surgeries for clients from low-income
households. For shelter animals, PAWS’
veterinarians performed another 1,869 specialty
and spay/neuter surgeries in order to prepare
these animals for successful adoptions.
PAWS’ volunteers and foster families provide a loving
touch when it comes to caring for animals. Whether
it’s carefully feeding an orphaned baby bird, or gently
bottle-feeding a hungry puppy, these dedicated
individuals make a world of difference in the lives
of animals.
5
PAWS Empowers with Ideas and Knowledge
As a voice for the animals, PAWS continues to
grow as a respected advocate for animals and
animal issues throughout Washington. Whether
it’s representing animals in state legislative
affairs, providing classroom presentations to
students, or reaching out to community groups
and the media, PAWS is one of the most reliable
sources of animal information and education in
the region.
With your help, the PAWS message reached
millions of people in 2012. Through media
coverage, website traffic, social networking,
and community outreach, PAWS’ impact
continues to grow.
• PAWS continues to be a sought after
destination for future animal care professionals
from all across the country. In 2012, PAWS
trained 17 rehabilitation interns and 25
veterinary medical student externs.
• PAWS delivered 117 presentations in 2012,
reaching 2,433 elementary school students.
These classes and workshops focus on topics
ranging from respecting wildlife, to the care
of household pets. These programs also help
children identify and report animal abuse,
understand the dynamics between humans and
wildlife, and deal with the loss of a family pet.
These PAWS presentations are highly regarded
by educators and are often the only exposure
to animal issues the students will receive during
their primary education.
• PAWS participated in 41 community events
in 2012, reaching nearly 5,000 people. The
PAWS team, working under the familiar, bright
orange tent, continues to offer animal advice,
education, and information for those seeking
answers to animal issues.
A student spreads
the message of
adoption after
participating in the
“PAWS Kids Who
Care” workshop.
These workshops are
helping build animal
awareness for the
next generation.
• PAWS continues to provide expert opinion
and testimony on issues pertaining to
animal welfare. In 2012, staff provided their
expertise on issues and legislation ranging from
animal cruelty, to spay/neuter laws, to wildlife
management. PAWS also promotes humane
education and legislation with targeted Action
Alerts. These alerts provide supporters with
information and resources that help them
participate in the policy process.
• In 2012, paws.org continued its remarkable
growth as an online resource for education,
advocacy, and communication. Last year, visits
to paws.org reached a record high of 995,000,
with 2.8 million page views. The PAWS Blog
also continues to be a popular resource, gaining
several thousand regular readers.
In 2012, PAWS provided release from suffering through humane
euthanasia for 1,253 wild animals whose injuries, illnesses or
circumstances precluded treatment and release into their
native habitat.
PAWS Provides Professional Care for Animals
• PAWS continues to be the only facility in
the Northwest to provide medical attention
and long-term care to injured or abandoned
bears. In 2012, PAWS cared for seven Black
Bear cubs, all of whom underwent their winter
hibernation in our facilities. This hibernation
allowed the bears a two-month sleep period
that will help them in their reintroduction to the
natural environment. Staff expects these cubs
to be released back into the wild in 2013.
• PAWS veterinary staff performed 4,062
surgical procedures as well as more than
4,000 examinations.
• PAWS cared for 63 raptors in 2012. This
number includes 11 eagles, six falcons, and
27 owls. PAWS also cared for 1,265 songbirds
and perching birds from 63 different species.
From hand-feeding baby birds, to rehabilitation
of raptors in large-scale flight pens, PAWS
continues to provide the highest level of
care available to wild animals in the state of
Washington.
• PAWS continues to support other shelters
throughout the Northwest through the PAWS
Partner Placement Program. In 2012, PAWS
was able to transfer in 1,795 cats and dogs
from other “stressed” shelters. This number
includes more than 1,000 cats and kittens,
a more than five-fold increase over 2011. An
enhanced marketing and media campaign
made it possible for us to find homes for these
additional animals.
• With the great support of donors, PAWS
continued to upgrade and expand its wildlife
facilities in 2012. This included the rebuilding
of our largest flight pen and two new Raccoon
shelter buildings. A deer pen, squirrel boxes,
and seabird pool were also refurbished.
Thanks to you, our staff of veterinarians and
rehabilitators have the resources and facilities to change
the lives of thousands of animals every year. Your
continued support assures that PAWS will always be
there for those animals who are injured, orphaned or
abandoned.
