FUNCTION NEWS WEDDINGS, PARTIES, ANYTHING One of the many privileges of being an MCC member is the opportunity to avail yourself and your guests of the top-notch function facilities on offer at the MCG. Members can book fabulous locations such as the Members Dining Room, Long Room or Frank Grey Smith Bar for private functions with a touch of class, as did 17-year member Simon Jefferson and Rebecca Burke for their wedding reception in the Long Room on March 3. Set against the unlikely backdrop of a Pura Cup match on the arena, Simon and Rebecca (pictured cutting the cake) celebrated their marriage with 100-plus family and friends who were equally thrilled to be spending some time in such an iconic venue. They had booked their wedding before the cricket fixtures had been finalised and the club honoured the reservation. Bride and groom were delighted with the outcome and effusive in their praise for Epicure’s input into their wedding arrangements. “The room looked spectacular, the food was great and the service sensational. In short, the night far exceeded our already high expectations,” said Rebecca. So if you or a family member have a special occasion coming up, whether it’s a wedding, 50th birthday or an engagement party, then the MCG with its myriad fine facilities could be the place for you. There are more than 20 function James Grant Photography rooms or spaces available with capacities ranging from 80 to 1000. The MCG is more than a sports stadium. It’s now a large, user-friendly venue with rooms, spaces, resources and under-cover parking for 600 cars that put it in the upper echelon of function centres in Melbourne. GOLFERS GO FOR VICTORIA The bi-annual MCC Members’ Golf Day will make its debut at the prestigious Victoria Golf Club on Wednesday December 5. Members holding a Club, VGA or WGV official handicap are invited to enter what promises to be an enjoyable day on one of Melbourne’s finest courses. A prominent guest speaker will entertain at the dinner. The cost for the day is $135, which includes green fees, a snack bbq lunch and three-course meal plus drinks at the evening function. A spendthrift could dine out daily for months and fail to match the superb mix of high cuisine and Penfolds wines presented to 320 appreciative guests on this memorable evening. Guest chef Adrian Tobin, flown in by the Spotless group especially for the occasion, was ably assisted by Epicure head chef at the MCG, Jeremy Woods. Rarely has the gastronomic offering risen to such heights. President Ian Johnson was a polished MC, Brian Adams delivered a rollicking discourse as keynote speaker, Channel 9’s Michael Roberts conducted a question-and-answer session with senior Penfolds red winemaker Steve Lienert and Keith Dunstan nearly got writer’s cramp signing copies of his book on the society’s first two decades, The Lunch Group That Grew. At the back of the room, guests sampled the 20th anniversary wine, a terrific 2005 Heathcote Winery shiraz that punches way above its price range. It’s available for $235 a dozen including free metropolitan delivery. Non-society members are invited to share these spoils and you’ll find an order form on the MCC website.
