OUT AND ABOUT AT THE MCC
It’s been another hectic round of social engagements for our members and special interest groups
A
wide range of functions and
special events entertained MCC
members and special interest
groups in recent months, many of which
were conducted for the first time.
One of those interest groups, Women
of the MCC, held a Women in Wine
cocktail party in late-February. The 2003
Victorian Rural Woman of the Year, Anna
Aldridge, was a most interesting guest
speaker as members and their guests
indulged in the chef’s selection of canapés
whilst enjoying a fine selection of wine
from the Yarra Valley.
The 2007 AFL season was ushered in
by the Football Season Launch Luncheon
on March 29, an event that followed in
the footsteps of the inaugural function in
April last year. Compered by football
commentator Tim Lane, more than 250
members and guests were entertained by
a panel of experts including recently
departed Melbourne coach Neale Daniher,
The Age’s Caroline Wilson, highly
regarded administrator Greg Miller
and newly appointed AFL Victoria boss
Peter Schwab.
The Young Members Club is celebrating
yet another successful year, with an
inaugural cricket cocktail party and four
football functions on the agenda. The
Young Members Club also secured the
hallowed turf for a very pleasant evening
of food, wine tasting and music at the
March 16 Field of Wines presentation on
the arena. A host of sports stars in the
wine industry were in attendance,
including former Carlton player and
AFL coach Robert Walls and Olympic
runner Cameron McKenzie.
The Cricket Presentation Dinner was
held on May 4 in the Members Dining
Room, where new coach Chris Davies was
introduced to his players for the first time.
Former club greats Peter Bedford and
Max Walker were also in attendance,
as were captain Ian Huntington and other
members of the 1966/67 First XI team that
gathered for a 40-year reunion. Later in
May, the MCC Bowls Section also toasted
their high achievers with a post-season
presentation night in the same room.
The Long Room Wine and Food Society
celebrated its 20th anniversary with
a black tie gourmet dinner on June 27
(see page 17), while guest speaker Major-
General Mike O’Brien was a highlight
of the War Veterans Group’s 10th
anniversary celebrations in the Members
Dining Room on June 20.
