CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
2011 was a very successful year
The MCC Golf Section continued to grow with another 34 new members joining during
the year. The numbers of players at our golf days was again down on the halcyon
years of 2007 and 2008 but in 2011the numbers of players generally were greater
than 2010. Members definitely prefer to play the prestigious sandbelt courses despite
the more expensive green fees because the attendances at those courses were
greater when compared to previous years. During the year 2 courses, namely 13 th
Beach and Kew were added to the calendar again after an absence of some years to
provide some variation for our members.
The club was very competently served by the Committee, and I would like to thank
our Captain, Pat Considine, our Secretary/Treasurer, John Webster, Assistant
Secretary/Treasurer, Carol Bates and Committee members Peter Evans and Val
Mitchell. The liaison staff at the MCC, especially Phoebe McWilliams, were outstanding
in their efforts in helping arranging dinners in the Hans Ebeling Room during the
cricket and football seasons.
Peter Mitchell, our liaison man from the MCC General Committee, again provided
invaluable input into the affairs of the Section and assistance in ensuring the Golf
Section was able to promote golf as an integral part of the sporting culture of the
Melbourne Cricket Club. Peter retired from the MCC General Committee in June 2011
and we thank Peter for his valuable contribution to the Golf Section. The Golf Section
arranged for all Sporting Sections to contribute to a retirement present of a set of
Callaway golf clubs for Peter with the Golf Section contributing over half of the
amount.
The Club Championships were again held at Commonwealth Golf Club. The Men’s
Champion for 2011 was Geoff Cosgriff who played off a handicap of 19 with a score of
34 stableford points. It was two years in a row that Geoff has won the event and third
time overall. The Women’s event was won by Hana Kadera who won the day with a
score of 37 points. Hana’s victory was well earned considering that she had left her
handbag in a coffee shop in Hampton and had to be cajoled into playing because she
wanted to go back to retrieve her bag. Arrangements were made for the bag to be
picked later in the day.
The Hong Kong Cricket Club Golf Society visited us in Jan/Feb and played in golf days
at Yarra Yarra, The National, Keysborough and Long Island and played an official
match at Victoria which MCC Golf won comfortably 6 matches to 2 with one match
drawn.
The Golf Section also had a team visit the Hong Kong Cricket Club Golf Society to help
celebrate the Cricket Club’s 160 th anniversary and we are looking forward to their
return visit in November 2012.
SECRETARY’S REPORT
The MCC Golf Section has completed another very successful and player numbers
were up on the 2010 year. All up we had 15 golf days for the year which included the
special extra day at Yarra Yarra for the Hong Kong players visit and the official match
between the two teams at Victoria.
The Section has relied on subscriptions from new members at $55 per new member
and, for the first time, an annual renewal subscription of $40 was levied on members to
trade profitably. There were 34 new members who joined throughout the year and 288
members out of a database list of 647 who paid the initial $40 renewal subscription
making a total of 322 financial members. With Golf Clubs forever increasing their green
fees and catering charges it is a constant battle to obtain reasonable rates for our
members. Golf Clubs are used to dealing with corporate days where large Companies
just pay the asking price. However, we are in constant negotiations to treat the MCC
Golf Section as a social group akin to the Veteran Golfers group which seem to be able
to obtain very cheap fees.
The year was also marked by the several social events the Section arranged in the
Hans Ebeling Room in conjunction with other Sporting Sections for football and cricket
matches.
The finances of the Golf Section are in a very sound position with cash in the bank at
31 st December 2011 of $36,442 and stocks of balls and prizes totalling $5,143 and
outstanding invoices of $9,552.
In April a group of 31 visited Hong Kong Cricket Club to help celebrate their 160 th
anniversary and a number of golf games were arranged in Hong Kong and China in
addition to the official match which was drawn at 3 matches each and one halved
match.
A few of the MCC Golf Section members also added a few days to the visit to go and
play golf at the Mission Hills complex.
Golf day at The National on Tues 1 st Feb
38 players played the Ocean Course at The National Golf Club with 17 Hong Kong golfers.
Again the weather was kind except for the wind which made playing conditions a bit tough.
The usual National muster menu was enjoyed after the game and there was much
conviviality on the bus on the way home from the National to the player’s hotel in
Southbank.
Official Match at Victoria Golf Club on Weds 2 nd Feb
Two teams of 18 competed in a shotgun start in fine weather conditions and the MCC team
won 6 matches to 2 with one match halved. A few after golf drinks were enjoyed by the
early finishers prior to proceeding to the MCG for the official tour dinner in the MCC
Committee Room.
Golf Day at Keysborough on Thurs 3 rd Feb
This day was arranged by the HKCCGS and was attended by 5 MCC Golf Section
members one of whom donated some bottles of wine as prizes for the day.
Golf day at Long Island on Friday 4 th February
This day was the last golf function with our visitors from HK and 58 players enjoyed the
Long Island Country Club layout. The weather was very kind to us while Melbourne was
being drenched with tropical down pours which saw play suspended at the Australian
Women’s Open at Commonwealth all our players except about 6 finished before lightning
forced them off the course. Our visitors supplied the prizes for this day and nearly every
player ended up with a prize of some sort.
Asked over dinner to rate the courses that they had played on the President of the HKCC,
Tony Melloy, who played in every golf game during the week rated Yarra Yarra as the best
followed in order by Long Island, Victoria and The National. He thought the National Ocean
course was too hard for hacker golfers, as he called himself, even though he plays to a
handicap of 2.
A couple of the HK players returned early to Melbourne to play in a social squash match
and about 30 minutes after leaving phoned in to say they were delayed by flooded roads.
Those of us still at Long Island thought they were joking but soon discovered they were not
as we journeyed back the city.
Unfortunately in the race from the clubhouse to the carpark in the wind and torrential rain to
get to our car the result sheet was blown/washed away never to be seen again.
The road home was flooded at the back of Mordialloc and Braeside and traffic was diverted
to Nepean Highway.
Golf day at Royal Melbourne on Monday 4 th April
The Golf day at Royal Melbourne was played in ideal conditions and 5 players broke or equalled
their handicaps. The West course was in excellent condition although the greens were still a bit
thin in condition given that the Presidents Cup was being played on 12 of the West course holes in
Nov 2012. A record 132 players turned out for the day. However the day took far too long to play
and in future field will be limited to 112 players. Royal Melbourne treated the players to a
sumptuous meal after golf to cap off a brilliant day at one of Melbourne’s best golfing venues.
The results of the competitions on the day were:
Golf Day at Kingston Heath on Tuesday 21 st June
The Kingston Heath course was in its usual great condition and the weather was perfect for golf
when 108 players hit off just after 12 noon. Even so some players finished in quite dark conditions.
The Victoria course was in excellent condition, the Club put on their usual excellent golf day and
even though it was extremely cold there were no cancellations and 94 players hit off at 12 noon.
Victoria provided their excellent buffet barbecue meal after golf which vies with the menu at The
Golf day at 13 th Beach on Friday 26 th August
Only 37 players entered at 13 th Beach despite the cheap green fee rates available to MCC
members. It was decided that would be only one individual competition given the very poor
numbers for this event. The course was in excellent condition weather about 22 degrees, rain
threatening but umbrellas required only for the last two holes. The food after golf was excellent and
very much enjoyed by the small group who played.
Golf Day at Peninsula on Monday 19 th September
A beautiful spring day greeted 64 players at Peninsula for our day on the Peninsula South course.
The meal in the clubhouse afterwards was very enjoyable despite the table arrangement not being
Golf Day at Commonwealth Golf Club on Monday 10 th October
Commonwealth Golf club was again the venue for the playing of the Golf Section’s Club
Championship with 26 men and 9 women qualifying to play in the event by winning one of the golf
days or grades in the case of the men. Eighty two players took part in the golf day and the men’s
Club Championship event was won by Geoff Cosgriff for the third time and the women’s champion
was Hana Kadera. Hana’s win was even more meritorious given that she had to be talked into
playing, having left her handbag in a coffee shop in Hampton and was very anxious to pull out of
the day and go back and get her bag. Arrangements were hastily made to collect her bag later that
day or the next day so that she could take her place in the field. Hana also won the women’s event
on the day beating all the qualifiers and non-qualifiers..
Golf Day at Gisborne on Friday 11 th November
Gisborne Golf Club was the venue for our last traditional individual stableford and 4 Ball Better Ball event
for the year and 64 players turned out for the event in glorious spring weather. The lunch and dinner
afterwards were both excellent with dinner comprising a comprehensive 3 course menu with steaks,
seafood and other meats in plentiful supply. The Gisborne Golf Club catering put on a splendid meal.
The day was sponsored again by our MCC Golf Captain Pat Considine and Peter O’Connor but
unfortunately, (fortunately for Pat), the $1000 voucher for an eagle on the short par 5 13 th hole did not
eventuate this year and there were no birdies on the hole. All the women received a beauty pack
compliments of Peter O’Connor and Peter provided a women’s only prize for one of the nearest the pins.
Golf day at The Dunes on Friday 2 nd December
There were 55 players at The Dunes with a brilliant day weather wise, temperature about 28° with
just a gentle breeze at the start but getting stronger as the day progressed. The course was in its
usual tip top condition and the food at the barbecue dinner afterwards was excellent as was the
service from the golf and catering staff. All up a fantastic day was enjoyed by the players at our
