MAKIN AND HARLOW ARE CHAMPIONS OF NORTH <br />

On the weekend of the 8 th – 10 th February 2013 squash players from 8 years old to 78 years old <br />

were competing at squash events, in South <strong>Wales</strong> the Bourse Welsh Masters Championships <br />

kicked off at Newport <strong>Squash</strong> Club with over 110 entries and in North <strong>Wales</strong> over 60 juniors <br />

travelled to Saints <strong>Squash</strong> and Fitness for the Metalmin North <strong>Wales</strong> Junior Open 2013. <br />

Juniors came from all over <strong>Wales</strong> <br />

to the compulsory event at the <br />

Saints <strong>Squash</strong> and Fitness, from <br />

Under11 to Under19 girls and <br />

boys were all competing from <br />

Saturday morning at 9am until <br />

just after 6pm on Sunday evening. <br />

In the boys Under11 Owen Hayes <br />

of Rhiwbina <strong>Squash</strong> club came out <br />

victorius against Ben Hughes in <br />

the final, also competing were <br />

Ryan Lewis and Max Miles Owen. <br />

In the Girls Under11/13 Katies <br />

Jones of Newport <strong>Squash</strong> Club <br />

came out on top in her final <br />

against Kate Workman, also <br />

competing were Eleri Rowlands, <br />

Bethan Gammon, Layna Beattie <br />

and Emily Jones. <br />

In the boys Under13 event Srikar Mummidi from Camarthen beat Lewis Clements to win <br />

another title at Under13 age category, also in the event was Lewis Poole, Keiran Hillman and <br />

Harri Pugh. <br />

In the Girls Under15/17 Lauren Williams won the event beating Sophie Alderman in the Final, <br />

also competing were Georgia Jones, Ciara Richards and Lianne Kierney. In the boys Under15 <br />

event Josh Lee played a great game to beat Liam Eason in the final, Jordan Williams and Joe <br />

Rhys Curtis were beaten semi finalists. <br />

In the boys Under17 event Emyr Evans won the event without dropping a single game and <br />

beating Joe Cornwall in the final, Liam Jones and George Thomas were beaten semi finalists in <br />

this event.


In the girls Under19 event there were 4 players with playing each other in a round robin group, <br />

three players were tied for 1 st in Elin Harlow, Fiona Murphy and Jenny Haley; on points count <br />

back Elin Harlow came out as the Champion. In the boys Under19 event Joel Makin won the <br />

event without dropping a game beating Owain Taylor in the final that lasted over 40 minutes. <br />

After the match Joel Makin said “Thank <br />

you to the club, the sponsors and <br />

tournament staff for all the hard work <br />

all weekend, the players and of course <br />

parents for coming to North <strong>Wales</strong> <br />

from wherever you live. Also I would <br />

like to take the opportunity for us to <br />

stop and think about Harry Faulkner <br />

and his family after Harry tragically <br />

died playing squash on Thursday <br />

evening, there are charities out there <br />

that offer screening to young adults <br />

and it is worth looking at” <br />

squash, over 400 viewers came online to <br />

view the squash from North <strong>Wales</strong>, we <br />

hope you managed to watch some of <br />

the streaming of you were not lucky <br />

enough to be at the club. <br />

runners up. <br />
