Lamp Information<br />
Throughout the catalogue, lamp boxes provide guidance on lighting performance. Beam angles quoted are usually for either a lamp and reflector combination or a reflector type lamp. Note that beam angles<br />
quoted are at 50% of the peak intensity.<br />
In the case of the lamp plus a reflector, the beam angle quoted will indicate the designed performance. However, in the case of the reflector lamp the quoted beam angle will be the ‘bare-lamp’ performance for<br />
that recommended lamp. The actual performance for a reflector lamp, within a luminaire, will be indicated by a polar curve for the particular lamp/luminaire combination - usually shown on the same page. There<br />
will sometimes be a small variation between luminaire performance and the lamp in ‘bare-lamp’ configuration.<br />

Lamp warm-up - Ceramic metal halide lamps require approximately 5-12 minutes warm up time to reach full output. Several colour changes are often experienced as part of the<br />
warm up process.<br />
Hot Re-strike - Hot lamps must cool down sufficiently until the gear can re-ignite them. Length of time this takes will depend upon the ambient and lamp temperature.<br />
Timed ignition - Gear will shut down to protect itself when lamps are damaged and at end of lamp life. Constant attempts to strike such lamps would result in a reduction in gear life.<br />
Once the lamp has been replaced and the gear reset (by switching the unit off at the mains) the gear will operate as normal.<br />
Thermal protection - Gear will shut down to protect itself when high ambient and internal temperatures are reached that would substantially decrease gear life. Such occurrences may occur in areas with poor<br />
ventilation or sometimes at the end of lamp life. Once the temperature has reduced to a safe level the gear will automatically re-set itself and operate normally.<br />

Emergency Lighting<br />
Emergency lighting is a vital and necessary safety requirement for most building types. The safety it provides for occupants is<br />
paramount and not negociable.<br />
Product Safety<br />
• All Concord fixtures carry the CE mark. This is a legal requirement<br />
which indicates that it is designed and tested to conform to BS EN<br />
60.598 2-22 and is manufactured in accordance<br />
with the quality system BS EN ISO 9001:2000 under certificate number<br />
FM01687.<br />
• Any emergency lighting fixture conversion other than by Concord to a<br />
CE marked fixture invalidates this CE marking and its associated<br />
legal protection.<br />
Emergency Lighting Equipment<br />
This comprises an inverter plus a set of batteries, which conform to BS EN<br />
60.598 2-22 and may be mounted:<br />
• Integral within the fixture (self contained – integral).<br />
• Remote from, but within 1 metre of, the fixture (self contained remote).<br />
Non-maintained Operation<br />
In this mode of operation the emergency lighting lamps are not normally<br />
energized. An automatic monitoring and switching system is provided to<br />
switch on the emergency lighting if the normal supply is interupted.<br />
Maintained Operation<br />
• A single lamp is used for both general and emergency modes.<br />
• In multi-lamp fixtures only one lamp will be used for the provision of<br />
emergency illumination.<br />
• Emergency lighting is provided for at least 3 hours.<br />
(1 hour duration available to special order).<br />
Maintained Remote Emergency Control<br />
The majority of Concord maintained emergency fixtures are supplied with<br />
integral emergency control gear. Where the housing design precludes<br />
integral gear a remote control box is provided complete with connection<br />
cables.<br />
420 TECHNICAL<br />
Product Combined Operation (also known as Sustained)<br />
• Separate lamps provide general and emergency illumination.<br />
• Emergency lighting is provided for at least 3 hours. (1 hour duration<br />
available to special order).<br />
Self-testing<br />

System Design<br />
This guide should be read in conjunction with current standars.<br />
Legislation Changes & Requirements<br />
The British Standard BS5266 has been revised to conform with the<br />
European Standard EN1838 (issued in the UK under reference BS EN1838/<br />
BS5266 Part 7) which specifies luminous requirements for emergency<br />
systems installed in premises. It also now calls up the luminaire product<br />
standard BS EN60598-2-22: 1999.<br />
Emergency lighting is provided for use when the supply to the normal<br />
lighting fails and is therefore powered from a source independent of that<br />
supplying the normal lighting. For the purposes of this standard<br />
emergency lighting is regarded as a generic term of which there are a<br />
number of forms.<br />
Definitions<br />
EMERGENCY EXIT<br />
A way out that is intended to be used in an emergency.<br />
ESCAPE ROUTE<br />
A route designated for escape in the event of an emergency.<br />
EMERGENCY ESCAPE LIGHTING<br />
That part of emergency lighting that provides illumination for the safety of<br />
people leaving a location or attempting to terminate a potentially<br />
dangerous process before doing so.<br />
ESCAPE ROUTE LIGHTING<br />
That part of emergency escape lighting provided to ensure that the means<br />
of escape can be effectively identified and safely used when the location<br />
is occupied.<br />
421 TECHNICAL<br />
OPEN AREA LIGHTING<br />
In some countries this is known as anti-panic lighting. This relates to that<br />
part of emergency escape lighting provided to avoid panic and provide<br />
illumination, allowing people to reach a place where an escape route can<br />
be identified.<br />
HIGH RISK TASK AREA LIGHTING<br />
That part of emergency escape lighting that provides illumination for the<br />
safety of people involved in a potentially dangerous process or situation<br />
and to enable proper shut down procedures for the safety of the operator<br />
and other occupants of the premises.<br />
Areas Covered/Levels of Illumination<br />
DEFINED ESCAPE ROUTE<br />
Based on 2m wide on the horizontal plane, preferably 1 lux<br />
but not less than 0.2 lux on the centre line. The lighting provided should<br />
operate within 5 seconds of the failure of<br />
the normal supply.<br />
OPEN AREA (Sometimes referred to as ‘anti-panic’ lighting)<br />
Not less than 0.5 lux at floor level of the open space. The ratio of max to<br />
min illuminance should be greater than 40:1.<br />

to fully comply with the many elements of the various<br />
applicable standards, a full and thorough assessment must<br />
be made.

All lighting fixtures produced by Concord:marlin are designed,<br />
manufactured and tested under a quality assurance system in accordance<br />
with BS EN ISO 9001:2000, and are designed to comply with EN 60.598<br />
under certificate number FM 01687.<br />
Also, the company employs an environmental management system under<br />
certificate number EMS 39002 that complies<br />
with BS EN ISO 14001:1996.<br />
Compliance<br />
The European Norm Electromechanical Certification<br />
(ENEC) has been adopted as a common mark of conformity<br />
with European Standards. A mark issued by any single national<br />
approbation bodies implies compliance with all seventeen international<br />
bodies. The ENEC mark now replaces the national test house symbol, and<br />
is appended by a number indicating from which test house the<br />
approbation originated.<br />

Performance cones indicate beam spread, ie. a narrow, medium or broad<br />
beam of light. The illuminance values given (lux/Klm) are the maximum values<br />
within the beam for horizontal planes at various distances below the<br />
luminaire. The beam diameter, ie. the approximate size of the light coverage,<br />
is also given. The cone widths are calculated for an illuminance at the edge of<br />
the cone of 50% of the maximum. By spacing luminaires at the beam<br />
diameter for the appropriate height, the combined effect of adjacent cones is<br />

Ballast lumen factor BLF (%)<br />
Refers to the ratio of light output from the lamp on emergency operation<br />
to the nominal light output.<br />
Candela (cd)<br />
The unit of luminous intensity<br />
Colour rendering index Ra (%)<br />
A measure of the degree to which the colour rendition of a light source<br />
differs on average from that of the lamp. At Ra(8) the illuminant<br />
(perceived) colour shift of eight reference colours is measured to give one<br />
number. Values of 100 - 90 are very good, 90 - 80 good and lamps with<br />
Ra’s below 80 should not be used where people are working continuously.<br />
Colour temperature T(K)<br />
Black bodies (like most others) when heated to sufficiently high<br />
temperatures emit red light, when the temperature is increased further the<br />
emitted light becomes white.<br />
The colour co-ordinates derived from this heated black body (a full<br />
spectral, or perfect radiator) when plotted on a diagram lie on a smooth<br />
curve known as the full radiator locus, and are shown on the CIE<br />
Chromacity Diagram.<br />
The colour appearance of a given light source can be compared to a<br />
position on the full radiator locus by reference to its colour temperature,<br />
and is generally quoted in degrees Kelvin.<br />
Glare<br />
Glare is the discomfort caused by high luminances in the field of vision.<br />
Light<br />
Electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength between 380 - 720nm.<br />
Ultraviolet light has a wavelength of less than 380nm whilst infrared<br />
light’s is greater than 720nm.<br />
Lighting level<br />
The incidence of light flux on a surface per unit of area, measured in lux.<br />
There is a difference between the vertical and horizontal lighting level.<br />
Light output ratio (LOR)<br />
The ratio of the luminaire light output to lamp light output. The efficiency<br />
of the luminaire.<br />
Lumen (lm)<br />
Unit of luminous flux used to describe a quantity of light emitted by a<br />
source or received by a surface.<br />
Luminaire efficiency<br />
How well a luminaire uses the luminous flux of the lamp(s) employed. This<br />
ratio is calculated by dividing the total luminaire lumens by the total circuit<br />
watts.<br />
Luminance<br />
The measure of brightness with which the eye perceives an illuminated<br />
surface from a certain direction. The luminous intensity per unit of visible<br />
surface of a light source (direct) or<br />
an illuminated surface (reflection). Luminance is indicated in candelas per<br />
square metre (cd/m2).<br />
Luminous efficacy (lm/w)<br />
Indicates how efficiently a lamp converts electrical energy to light.<br />
Luminous flux (lm)<br />
The total light output of a lamp measured in lumen.<br />
Luminous intensity (cd)<br />
The power of a source or illuminated surface to emit light in a particular<br />
direction, measured in candela.<br />
Lux (lux)<br />
The unit of illuminance, equal to one lumen per square metre (lm/m2).<br />

Maintenance factor<br />
Lighting levels decrease in time due to soiling and lamp deterioration.<br />
Mean values are 0.7 or 0.8 for a normal interior, depending on cleaning<br />
cycles.<br />
Performance cone<br />
Shows whether the luminaire emits a narrow or wide beam of light and<br />
indicates the lighting level measured at the centre of the beam. The beam<br />
diameter and angle indicate where half the light is measured in relation to<br />
the centre of the beam. It gives only a rough guide of the size of beams<br />
narrower than 40°.<br />
Polar curve<br />
The graphic representation of the luminous intensity in different directions.<br />
If two curves are plotted, the distributions are in two vertical planes. The<br />
value is indicated in candelas per 1000 lumen (cd/klm) and therefore must<br />
be multiplied by the nominal luminous flux of the lamp(s) used. The polar<br />
curve graph also indicates luminaire efficiency.<br />
Room index K<br />
An index relating to the dimensions of a room influencing the amount of<br />
light emitted from the fitting onto the working surface.<br />
(See page 391).<br />

Shielding angle (º)<br />
The horizontally measured angle from which the lamp or reflection from it<br />
in the reflector is no longer visible. It is an important measure of glare and,<br />
therefore, light comfort.<br />
Spacing to height ratio (SHR)<br />
Used to determine the maximum distance between luminaires. The ratio of<br />
the distance between adjacent luminaires to the the distance between the<br />
luminaire plane and the horizontal working plane.<br />

Uniformity ratio of illuminance<br />
This indicates the degree of evenness of the light on the<br />
working surface and is shown as a ratio of the minimum to the mean<br />
lighting level on a surface. The lower the number the more disturbing the<br />
light.<br />
Utilisation factor<br />
The ratio of the light flux which the reference surface receives<br />
to the totalled luminous fluxes of the installation lamps. This is influenced<br />
by the shape of the room and selected luminaire and is expressed in the<br />
form of UF tables.<br />
Downward Flux Fraction (DFF)<br />
The factor of the total LOR, which is downward, taking the combined<br />
ULOR and DLOR as 100%. Using Cassini as an example, the DLOR is 37%<br />
and the ULOR is 15% so the combined is 52%. If this is taken as 100%<br />
LOR, 72% is downward (37% divided by 53%).
