Hi there MS15er!
We hope you’ve been enjoying your summer! With warm weather, fun festivals, and stunning beaches, summer is
finally and officially in full swing here in Chicago! Now that it’s July, Orientation is just around the corner, and we
are very much looking forward to your joining us at Pritzker soon. We sent out a general Orientation schedule in the
previous mailing, and you have most likely noticed that the first few days of the weekend will be really busy. We
encourage you to find time in the last few weeks of July to take care of last minute errands (i.e. housing issues,
banking, health insurance, shopping, financial aid, etc.) and maximize your relaxation time (i.e. napping and
lounging at the pool)! At Orientation, you will meet many wonderful Pritzker staff and faculty members, get to
know your classmates and other Pritzker students, and learn much more about the wonders to come over the next
four years. Orientation will officially begin at 8:00 AM on Thursday, August 4 th , in the BSLC lobby (924 E.
57 th St., Chicago, IL 60637).
In addition, you should receive information about creating your UC CNet ID within the next week. This ID will
serve as your University of Chicago email address and will be the username and password with which you will log
on to UofC websites, including Chalk (online site for your classes), cMore (online site for accessing grades, billing
info, and other administrative info), the wireless network, and more. Once you have claimed your CNET ID, you
will be able to set up your University of Chicago email account and get access these sites.
Last but not least, in this third and final mailing is the following:
• Bios from our 2011-2012 Pritzker Chiefs
• A letter from our Basic Life Support (BLS) group leaders about your BLS training
• A flyer from our Pritzker Societies Orientation Committee describing our Pritzker societies and our
Societies Field Day
• A letter introducing the library resources available at the University of Chicago
• Information on student health insurance
• A letter outlining the process for acquiring medical equipment
• Flyers from several Pritzker student organizations – This is just a sampling of our MANY student
organizations. You can find a more complete list of Pritzker student groups, including career interest
groups, free clinics, community outreach groups, etc., at
http://pritzker.uchicago.edu/current/students/organizations/index.shtml. Don’t worry about joining any
groups just yet. You will be learning much more about these student organizations during Orientation. For
now, this is just a taste of some of the extracurricular opportunities awaiting you.
As this is the last mailing before Orientation, your mailboxes will no longer be stuffed with Pritzker envelopes! We
wish you one last congratulations and hope that you enjoy your last few weeks of summer. Orientation will arrive
before you know it! As we have mentioned time and again, the Pritzker community is thrilled to welcome you to
the family. And as always, please email us with any questions, comments, or concerns. Ciao for now from Hyde
Park, and see you soon!
We are incredibly excited to be your 2011-2012 Pritzker Chiefs, and we are looking forward to working
with all of you during this upcoming year. While we hope to get to know all of you better throughout
the year, here is a quick note about the three of us…
Geoff Stetson
Welcome to Pritzker! My name is Geoff and I am from Columbus, OH (Go Bucks!). I
graduated with an AB in Biology from Brown University in 2007. I then promptly left
the United States to work for a non-profit organization in Nicaragua called Manna
Project International. There I worked on multiple health projects with a community
in Managua’s trash dump, and I taught English and Math to youth in rural
communities. After Nicaragua, I came to UofC to try my hand at this medicine thing
and have loved every minute. I now live in Hyde Park and have stayed very active
outside of medical school with friends, food, fun, and fitness (alliteration)!
Community service has also been a big part of my time here, helping to run the Pritzker Community
Service Fellowship, volunteering at a free clinic, and working with South Side youth on community
service projects through the Summer Service Partnership. I have also continued my love of travel by
going to the Dominican Republic with the Infectious Disease Department and to Haiti after the
earthquake. I am very excited for you all to join us here at Pritzker. You’re gonna love it!
Grace Lee
Hello and welcome to the Pritzker family! My name is Grace and I am one of the
Pritzker Chiefs for this coming year. We are very much looking forward to
meeting you soon! I am originally from the north ‘burbs of Chicago but my family
and I moved to Omaha, NE and that is now home. I went to the University of
Pennsylvania and majored in Psychology and Biology. I graduated in 2008 and
came straight through to medical school where I’ve had a blast getting to know
all the amazing people around me (and, of course, learning a thing or two about
medicine ). Since my time here, I’ve volunteered at free clinics, worked on
several research projects, learned to jog, tried my hand at club gymnastics, and
am still exploring all that the city of Chicago has to offer! Pritzker is a very special
place and I am certain you will find a way to expand your horizons and have fun while you’re at it.
Manny Diaz
Welcome to Pritzker and to the University of Chicago! My name is Manny and I
am from Elgin, IL. I earned an Evans Scholarship to Northwestern University and
graduated from there in 2005 with a BA in Comparative Religions. After that I
worked in a pharmacy, completed a post bac, and taught test-prep before coming
here to Pritzker. During my time here I’ve taken advantage of many of the great
opportunities afforded to Pritzker students such as traveling on a medical mission
to Peru, participating in service projects on the South Side, and becoming
involved in programs such as the Student Wellness Committee. Besides that I
love running and biking along the lakefront, wandering through our many museums, exploring the city’s
many interesting neighborhoods, going to concerts, and rooting for the Bears! I look forward to meeting
all of you in a few short weeks!
If you have any questions at any time, feel free to contact any of us at pritzkerchiefs@bsd.uchicago.edu.
Dear Pritzker Class of 2015,
On behalf of the members of the Pritzker Basic Life Support (BLS) Program, we would
like to congratulate you on your acceptance to the University of Chicago! We are excited
you have chosen to attend Pritzker. At the University of Chicago, we place great
importance on teamwork and patient safety. The Pritzker BLS Program is committed to
teaching medical students and all hospital staff the basic resuscitation skills that will be
necessary to serve as a team member during an emergency. These skills will prove
invaluable as you spend more time in the hospital and as a citizen in your everyday lives.
As a medical student, you are required to have BLS certification. You will be trained
and tested in basic life support skills during first-year orientation on August 5 th and
6 th . This is a required training experience, regardless of any current level of certification
or prior experience. However, please feel free to notify us via email at
PritzkerBLS@yahoo.com if you are currently BLS certified or if you are currently a BLS
instructor, for the purposes of planning the training experience during orientation. Upon
demonstrating an adequate level of proficiency in BLS at the end of the training
experience, you will receive an American Heart Association Basic Life Support
certification card, which will be valid for two years. After 2 years, you will be able to
recertify with Pritzker BLS.
All materials necessary for this training experience will be provided for you and most
students find the information they receive during our training course to be sufficient.
However, there is also a supplemental text available, which you can purchase from us or
check out from the University of Chicago Library. It is the American Heart Association
Basic Life Support textbook, and it is on reserve at Crerar Library (call number
YM70647).
The BLS Program represents a wonderful example of student initiative here at Pritzker.
The students, with the support of the Pritzker School of Medicine faculty and
administration, maintain the equipment and staff necessary to teach several certification
classes a month for all members of the hospital staff. As a student at Pritzker, you will
have the opportunity to become involved with this endeavor by becoming a certified BLS
instructor. Should you wish to do so, check your e-mail inboxes in the first few weeks of
the quarter for an application and more information on our hiring process. Please don’t
hesitate to contact either of us with questions in the meantime. Again, we are very excited
you have chosen Pritzker and look forward to meeting you.
to attending various events in the city. Each society has
great advisors who look forward to giving you career advice
or just chatting about life. While societies are chosen
year, FIELD DAY. The pride of each
society will be at stake as the four
societies compete against each other
in the various athletic (and not so
athletic) events throughout the
afternoon. As always, the day will end
with an epic tug-of-war.
Dear Member of the Pritzker Class of 2015:
Welcome to the University of Chicago Library, home to a large and rich research
collection. The Library holds more than seven million printed books, and the everexpanding
electronic resources currently include over 1 million e-books, 93,500 e-journals,
and hundreds of databases. The Library consists of six campus libraries, including the new
Mansueto Library, a state-of-the-art high-density underground storage facility topped with
a dramatic Grand Reading Room under the glass dome (pictured below). The John Crerar
Library is the biomedical and physical sciences library, conveniently located across the
street from the Biological Sciences Learning Center, where most of your first year courses
are held.
I am Deb Werner, and as a Biomedical Reference Librarian at the John Crerar Library, I
provide library instruction, orientation, and reference services. My colleague, Christa
Modschiedler, is the selector for biomedical materials and provides reference services.
I can help you navigate the enormous range of Library resources. You may contact me
with questions about the Library, such as:
• How do I find electronic journal (e-journal) articles?
• How can I access e-journals from off-campus?
• What databases are available to find the latest research on a topic?
If you would like an in-person introduction to the Crerar Library, please feel free to contact
me. I would be happy to give you a tour of the library, introduce you to specific resources,
and discuss your research needs.
If you have any questions or concerns this summer, feel free to contact me at
dwerner@uchicago.edu. See you in August!
2011-12 University of Chicago - Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP)
Student Health Insurance Available - Details Enclosed!
Brought to you by The University of Chicago
and UnitedHealthcare StudentResources
2011 - 2012
Welcome University of Chicago Students for
the 2011-2012 Plan Year!
The University of Chicago requires all students to carry adequate
health insurance to cover emergency and non emergency
care received in the Chicago area.
This year the University is partnering with UnitedHealthcare
StudentResources to provide the University Student Health
Insurance Plan (U-SHIP) which is available to all* registered
students at the University. As a registered student, you will be
automatically enrolled in the U-SHIP Basic level of coverage
unless you take action to waive U-SHIP by showing proof of
enrollment in another comparable insurance plan.
For students who register at the University Autumn Quarter 2011, the
deadline to make your insurance enrollment or waiver decision is
October 7, 2011. To make your insurance or waiver decision go to
the website: http://studentinsurance.uchicago.edu which will
be open starting July 1st. On this website you will either confirm your
enrollment in U-SHIP and indicate your desired level of coverage
(Basic or Prescription Advantage) as well as any dependents you
wish to include on your plan, OR you will waive U-SHIP by providing
information about your alternate insurance coverage.
Please note, students who do not make their enrollment or
waiver decision by the deadline will remain enrolled in the U-
SHIP Basic plan and responsible for the premium payment
of $2,466 for the 2011-2012 plan year. Students must
complete this enrollment/waiver process each year.
Please read this Pamphlet carefully. It contains a description
of the Basic and Prescription Advantage levels of U-SHIP,
as well as the additional benefits you receive by being
enrolled in U-SHIP such as dental and vision discounts,
worldwide coverage if you study or travel abroad, and more.
Detailed information about the U-SHIP plan, including the
complete Plan Brochure, is also available at
http://studenthealth.uchicago.edu/studentinsurance/
and at www.UHCSR.com/uchicago
Whether this is your first time enrolling in an insurance plan
or you already know a lot about the topic, you may find that
you have questions about the University Student Health
Insurance Plan or about the University’s health policies. You
may email your questions to healthaffairs@uchicago.edu, or
you may call the on-campus student insurance coordinators
at 773-834-4543 (Press option number 2).
Why
Is a Student Health Insurance Plan Important?
Compare U-SHIP with other choices for health insurance coverage
Health care costs can be very high, so having insurance coverage
for emergency and non emergency medical services in the
area where you will attend school is very important. Carefully
compare U-SHIP benefits and provider network (Choice Plus
Network) with the benefits and provider network of any alternate
plan you may be considering.
●
●
●
If you’re covered under your parents’ plan, coverage
may end while you are still a student. Many health
plans have age restrictions that limit coverage for dependent
children. With U-SHIP, you are covered for as long as
you are registered as a student at the University of
Chicago.
Do you have coverage while away from home or
abroad? Many Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
plans only allow for emergency care while you are away
from home. When you travel in the U.S. or study abroad, it’s
good to know you’re covered were you to need health care.
U-SHIP gives you that assurance.
Pre-existing condition. Does the plan you are considering
provide benefits for an ongoing medical condition? U-
SHIP covers your pre-existing conditions.
When considering which insurance plan to purchase, carefully
consider your current medical needs, the benefits highlighted in
this pamphlet, and the specific benefits of U-SHIP by going
online at www.UHCSR.com/uchicago. Consider the CoPay,
coinsurance, out of pocket maximum, prescription drug coverage
and provider network, among other benefits.
Best wishes for a successful and a healthy academic year!
Sincerely,
When
Where
Do I Enroll or Waive Enrollment in U-SHIP?
Student Health Insurance Requirement
Each year, all students must confirm enrollment in the Basic
Plan, upgrade to the Prescription Advantage Plan, enroll
dependents in the Basic Plan, or waive U-SHIP by providing
proof of adequate coverage under a comparable health insurance
plan.
To enroll or waive U-SHIP enrollment go to
http://studentinsurance.uchicago.edu and follow the online
instructions. The enrollment/waiver deadline is October 7, 2011, or
the second Friday of the winter, spring or summer quarters, if you
register at the University for the first time in a quarter other than the
autumn quarter.
If you do not make a selection by the enrollment deadline, or if
your application to waive coverage is not approved, you will
remain enrolled in the Basic Plan for the 2011-2012 Plan Year
and will be charged the annual premium.
Coverage Periods
Annual 9/1/11 - 8/31/12
Do I Go To Get Medical Care?
Whether you remain enrolled in U-SHIP or waive with an alternate
plan, when you need medical care, you should first go to
Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS). As a registered
student,* you automatically have access to these services
at the University. SHCS can provide the immediate attention
you need and address your routine health care needs. The
physicians and psychiatrists on staff at SHCS are faculty members
of the University of Chicago Medical Center.
If you are enrolled in U-SHIP and need care that can’t be provided
Englewood on the South Side of Chicago.
The Maria Shelter Clinic is a free weekly clinic
that operates in concert with the aims of the
Shelter. The clinic provides a valuable resource to
an underserved community whose regular care
might otherwise be interrupted by homelessness,
unemployment, or lack of insurance.
The Clinic is managed by a team of first year
medical students and relies on the services of
volunteer University physicians.
INTERESTED IN
VOLUNTEERING?
practice physical exam skills, and present cases to
the attending physician. No experience is necessary
to volunteer.
We see about 3-10 women and children patients
each week. Residents make use of the Clinic for
Calling all…
Shower singers! A cappella aficionados!
Blast-the-radio-and-belt-it-out-in-the-car
singers! Former Choir Members! …And all
others who like to sing in some capacity not
mentioned here!
We want YOU!
…to join Pritzker’s very own all-medical co-ed
A Cappella group,
Say Ahh!!!
We’re an informal, fun-loving, joke-making group that sings
sometimes too. We practice once a week around our busy med
school schedules. We perform at various Pritzker events such
as holiday parties, talent shows, and typically have one full
concert each year.
Any and all singers are welcome to come check us out! We will
have an info session toward the beginning of the year and hold
low-stress-low-key auditions. ABSOLUTELY consider
auditioning if you haven’t sung in years, don’t really consider
yourself a “singer” but enjoy singing or something along those
lines.
For more information and to be kept in
the loop, please email Michelle Desjardins,
