READY FOR TAKE OFF
Ready for Takeoff. Airports are generally deemed hectic
processing machines, but this prejudice does not apply
to Madrid’s Barajas Airport! Barajas Airport's new
Terminal, T4, is like a brightly colored butterfl y fi t
with roofs that give the building “wings.” Adding to this
vibrant effect are the roofs’ colored columns, which,
like dancing acrobats, catch the attention of airline
passengers and passersby alike, who will spend their
wait lost in astonishment and reverie over this bold
structure.
This concrete edifi ce sweeps 20 m into the air,
encompassing a total of three storeys – a feat large
enough to make Terminal 4 one of the most courageous
in the world.
METALLIC LANDSCAPES.
A monumental statement in architecture, Munich's BMW
World is one in a new generation of 21st-century
communication structures. Like a chunk of open city
under one roof, it houses both a showroom and an
events center. It also serves as the central delivery point
for people from all over the world to pick up their new
BMWs in person. A tangible link between car and
architecture and material and creativity, BMW World
represents the harmonious union between state-of-theart
technology and optimum use of resources.
A Superlative Building. Its mighty roof boasts an
impressive total area of 16,500 sqm, comprising an
innovative steel structure in the form of a double cone
and - although it is about ten times as big as the
Acropolis - just eleven additional articulated columns.
Its edifice is composed of 55,000 cbm of concrete,
15,000 sqm of glass frontage and 1,154 rooms. The
structure’s double cone is a true symbol of the changed
architectural debate, its archaic dictate of beams and
supports replaced by free forms, creating fantastic
spatial landscapes. It is in every respect a superlative
structure - even in terms of its sanitary zones, which
span diverse areas such as lounges, restaurants, shops
and showrooms. Each of these unique spaces reflects the
language of modern design through the implementation
of Duravit sanitaryware.
A TOWER WITH A DIFFERENCE
A superb tower is currently being built in the United
Arab Emirates: Burj Dubai. Built by Emaar Properties,
the tower already is the tallest building in the world and
will stand over 700 metres high when completed. The
tower will feature the “barrel” that is made by German
manufacturer, Duravit. In the last 20 years, this
bathroom manufacturer with headquarters in Hornberg
in the Black Forest has successfully pursued an explicit
design strategy and, in collaboration with high-profile
names such as Philippe Starck, Sieger Design and Lord
Norman Foster, has developed bathroom and wellness
products that stand out not only on the strength of their
unusual design but also their good value for money. “We
offer everything in bathroom design, ranging from jeans
to dinner jacket”, says Franz Kook, Management Board
Chairman of Duravit. The “barrel” is a vanity unit
designed for Duravit by Philippe Starck in 1994. He was
inspired by primitive forms, such as the washing bowl,
bucket, hand pump and nail. Over the years, the “Starck
barrel” has become Duravit’s best-selling item of
bathroom furniture and it is now moving into the luxury
skyscraper. Duravit will deliver more than 1,000 barrels
to Dubai, as well as almost 4,000 WCs and bidets and
more than 1,600 baths and whirltubs. This very pleasing
contract is worth millions. A complete service that will
doubtlessly open more doors and perhaps also a few
more towers for the German bathroom manufacturer.
GREEN BUILDING.
The German Stock Exchange was the first high-rise
building in Germany to be awarded platinum
certification under the LEED standard. The office
building received this award not only for the sustainable
design, but also for the high level of user-friendliness.
State-of-the-art technology such as an in-house biogas
cogeneration system and a water-layer heat accumulator
cover the technical requirements. The employees, on
the other hand, cherish the bright, friendly atmosphere:
floor to ceiling glass panels guarantee maximum
daylight. Bridges, stairs and walkways traverse the 80meter
high atrium in the center. They allow
communication, movement and a variety of views.
A CITY IN BALANCE
"Better City, Better Life" was the theme of EXPO 2010.
Under the title "Balancity", the German Pavilion is
dedicated to a city in balance between renewal and
preservation, innovation and tradition, urbanity and
nature... It is designed as an accessible sculpture that is
an interplay of interior and exterior spaces, the
surrounding landscape and public area. A terraced
landscape extends from the ground fl oor to the third
upper fl oor of the pavilion. Four shimmering exhibition
structures appear to be suspended above it - each
seemingly poised in precarious balance, yet stable when
working in combination with one another. They form a
large roof over the cityscape and offer shade as well as
protection from the rain. The visitor follows the
designated route through a labyrinth with light and
shade, confi nement and expanse, squares and tunnels.
He passes through various scenarios such as the harbour,
underwater room, garden, factory – a room in constant
motion –, park, atelier and town square, until he arrives
at the heart of the complex: the conical energy center.
Here, the visitors are the source of energy and they can
move an illuminated ball with their voice. The pavilion is
covered with a transparent membrane. Depending on the
incidence of light, this membrane transforms the
permeable structure into a silvery crystal or a glowing
light sculpture after nightfall.
DIE WEIT LEUCHTENDE ARCHITEKTUR
Not only are the giants of the sea exhibited here and the
underwater worlds of the Baltic and the North Sea
simulated in the largest aquariums in Germany, but the
building itself also sets impressive standards. Despite its
complex function as an aquarium, the building’s
ingenious structural engineering allows it to conserve
energy.
The architecture can be seen from afar and cuts into
the sky like a white sail in the wind; it is so carefully
positioned against the backdrop of one of Germany’s
most attractive Baltic cities that it poses no threat
whatsoever to any ambitions as a world heritage site. On
the contrary – it is an impressive example of how to add
modern elements to a medieval city. In this notable
structure, Duravit products look after the welfare of
guests in the washroom and toilet areas. And the
products certainly have to withstand quite a lot: the
tremendous rush of visitors to the museum!
COLOUR AND LIGHT
The Brandhorst Collection is an architectural jewel that
adds a further highlight to Munich’s museums. The shell
made of coloured ceramic rods serves as a striking
orientation point in the line of buildings along the road.
Colourful on the outside, discreet on the inside: with its
understated materials, light-grey walls and light wood,
the architecture takes a step back, allowing the art to
take centre stage. A well-devised system consisting of
skylights and light defl ection ensure that practically all
of the exhibition rooms are provided with daylight – and
it is not only the Andy Warholes that show themselves in
their true colours.
