WELCOME TO MEMORIAL HOSPITAL’S 2006 REPORT
TO OUR COMMUNITY! The theme for this year’s report,
“Facing a Healthy Future,” could not be more fitting. We
experienced significant growth over the past year in key service
areas and finished the year with a healthy bottom line. We
believe our continued success is due in large part to our
associates, physicians and volunteers — they are the faces of
Memorial.
Our niche in the marketplace is providing quality care with a
personal touch. We have found that our focus on personal
attention enhances the healing process and makes our patients
feel truly at home.
It is gratifying as the CEO to receive letters from patients and
their families on a weekly basis thanking Memorial associates
and physicians for the one-on-one attention they received. We
recognize that no one enjoys coming to the Hospital, but we
can make the experience a little less stressful by showing we
genuinely care.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our associates,
physicians and volunteers for making Memorial the health care
provider of choice for a growing number of York Countians.
It’s because of their smiling faces that our future looks bright.
Sarah Thompson and her two daughters,
Lora and Lana, have worked at Memorial
for a combined 68 years.
Sally J. Dixon
President and CEO
Sincerely,
LittleThingsMakea
THIS YEAR, MEMORIAL FORMED AN AMENITIES
COMMITTEE that was charged with developing and
implementing a plan to offer extras to patients that will
transform what they consider a good stay at our Hospital into
a great stay.
The committee — comprised of representatives from
departments throughout the Hospital — received their
inspiration from an unlikely source, the hotel industry.
Memorial looked at what hotels were offering to make their
guests more comfortable.
In the first year, the committee has implemented many
amenities, including Candlelight Meals for two for families
celebrating their new addition, new beds and pillows, daily
newspapers, back rubs for patients, robes, pajama bottoms, an
evening snack of cookies and milk, ear buds, internet access in
common areas and notepads for patients to write down
questions for their caregivers.
Our newest amenity that started last fall is a concierge service
located by the Outpatient entrance of the Hospital. Concierges
greet patients and visitors, direct them to their destinations and
provide answers to questions. “Patients and visitors are often
apprehensive when they are coming to the Hospital and a
smiling face to greet them and help them get to their
destination has proven to be very popular,” said Josette Myers,
director of Community Relations and Development.
After all, at Memorial Hospital, we know little things
make a big difference.
ABestPlacetoWork…
FiveYearsinaRow
A LOT HAS CHANGED FOR CHERYL ITURMENDI, a
licensed practical nurse in the Industrial Resource Center, since
she first joined the staff of Memorial Hospital. At that time she
and her husband, Pedro (who recently retired from Memorial),
had three small children, and they were just beginning their
lives together. She said time has gone by fast…at home and at
work. Now her children are grown and are raising their own
families, and she recently celebrated her 30th anniversary at
Memorial Hospital.
It comes as no surprise to Cheryl that Memorial was recently
named one of the Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania for the
fifth year in a row. “I love it here,” she said. “I will be here
until I retire!”
“We really take the time to care for our patients at Memorial.
Our patients are our priority,” Cheryl added.
On a personal note, Cheryl enjoys working with her co-workers
and feels appreciated for the work she does. “I have made
lifelong friends at Memorial. This is not just where I work —
this place is like a second home to me,” she added.
Cheryl is one of nearly 100 Memorial associates who
have worked at the Hospital for 25 or more years. A
full list of these associates is in the back of this report.

CustomerService
REGULAR CHECK-UPS ARE IMPORTANT…and no one
knows that better than Memorial Hospital. To check the pulse
of our customer service program, Memorial participates in
Press Ganey, the nation’s leading health care satisfaction firm.
Over the past twelve months, our Press Ganey scores for
inpatients have made continuous and dramatic improvements,
with Memorial Hospital reaching the 82nd percentile in our
peer group.
“The scores and surveys are important to our mission,” said
Sue Gordon, vice president of Patient Services. “This year
we formed customer service committees on the nursing
units to review the scores and recommend areas for
improvement.” Some of the new initiatives include
providing ear buds to reduce patient noise, giving thank
you cards to patients upon discharge, enhancing meal
delivery and providing incentives to staff for meeting or
exceeding goals. “The improvements involved teamwork
and raising awareness,” said Deb Quackenbos, nurse
manager of the Critical Care Unit. “The nursing staff is
very conscious of what they are doing.”
“When we focus on our patients’ comfort and safety, it
encourages them to participate in their care, and that
focus creates a win-win situation for the patient and the
hospital,” said Sue.
SupportingMemorial
MeansGivingthe
CommunityaChoice
JIM ZARFOSS FIRST GOT INVOLVED WITH
MEMORIAL HOSPITAL in the 1980’s when he was the
managing broker for the company that insured Memorial. “I
didn’t know a lot about Memorial,” Jim remembered. “But I
was intrigued that the Hospital was so committed to giving
York County a choice for quality health care.”
In 1992, Jim joined the board and was the chairman from
1994 to 1998. He currently is the Board chair of Memorial
Health Systems and the Surgical Center of York and is a
member of the Memorial Hospital Board.
Jim not only gives his time to Memorial, but his resources as
well. He and his wife, Jane, make a generous annual gift to
Memorial through the York County Community Foundation,
and they are also members of the Elmwood Society, which was
started last year to recognize donors who have remembered
Memorial in their wills or estate plans.
Why do they choose to support Memorial? “We think it is
important to offer our community a choice for their health care.
Competition promotes quality and manages costs,” Jim said.
In addition, as patients they enjoy the culture at Memorial. “I
love the family feeling,” said Jane. “The staff wants to get to
know you personally. Their caring is compassionate.”
“The other reason we support Memorial is because Memorial
supports the community with their volunteer and financial
resources,” Jim added.
ExceedingPatient
Expectations
FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS, Memorial’s Emergency
Department (ED) has experienced significant growth in the
number of patients seeking care. Five years ago, the ED was
treating 23,000 patients and this year that number grew to
more than 33,000.
To handle this increasing demand for emergency services,
Memorial’s associates look for innovative ways to move
patients efficiently through the department. FastER, now in its
third year, has definitely been a successful service because it
treats patients with less severe emergencies more quickly,
which in turn frees up space in the ED for more serious
emergencies. “The key to our success with FastER is that the
patients do not have to decide if they have a minor or major
emergency,” said Marcia Feehan, manager of Memorial
Hospital’s ED. “All patients come to the same Emergency
Department door and at triage, we decide if they can be seen
in FastER.”
Other ED initiatives that have helped to enhance
patient flow, include:
• Patient Flow Technicians — These certified EMT’s are
assigned to a physician to enhance communication and
workflow in the ED. This gives physicians more time to
spend with patients. And, with the new capability to sign
patient records electronically, physicians are more flexible
and accessible.
• Vascular Access Technicians — VATS are responsible for
drawing blood and starting IV access while the ED nurse is
gathering the medication, which helps to speed up specimen
turn-around times.
• Crisis Manager — Patients and their families facing crisis
issues such as death, domestic violence and mental health
now have the services of a social worker available to them
in the ED.
“At Memorial, the patients come first,” said Marcia. “We
are constantly striving to exceed their expectations!”
ReinvestingintheLatest
Technology
DELIVERING FASTER AND MORE EFFICIENT PATIENT
CARE is at the core of Memorial Hospital’s state-of-the-art
Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS). This
advanced computer-based technology is able to digitize x-rays
and scans, generate instant images that are clearer and easier
for radiologists to enhance, and store the information for
physicians and caregivers to view anytime through a secure
Internet network.
“The images are immediately available to me,” said Dr. Terry
York, chairman of Memorial Hospital’s Radiology Department.
“We have voice activation software integrated with PACS, which
allows us to dictate a report and self-edit. For referring
physicians it is great because they are getting the information
more quickly, and it allows for faster treatment for the patient.”
Memorial has invested more than $2 million in the PACS
system. Savings from eliminating traditional film and film
management costs coupled with improved accuracy and
workflow has Dr. York excited about the impact of PACS on
future patient care. “In the near future, Memorial Hospital will
be able to install this software in physicians’ offices so they can
access their own patient records online. It will save time and
reduce costs.”
A Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) is
an example of Memorial’s commitment to reinvest in the
latest technology. In the past year, Memorial invested
$7.5 million in technology.
CommitmenttoQuality
TO PROVIDE PREMIER CARE, Memorial Hospital is
continually looking for ways to enhance our delivery of quality
services. Our participation this year in the 100,000 Lives
Campaign, sponsored by the Institute for Healthcare
Improvement (IHI), is a fine example. The campaign
encouraged health care organizations across the country to
implement a number of best practices that are proven to reduce
mortality and strengthen patient safety.
Memorial chose to address five issues: rapid response teams,
surgical site infection, central line infection, acute myocardial
infarction care and ventilator-associated pneumonia. In all
areas, we have realized remarkable improvement, such as
a nearly 60 percent decrease in cardiac code blues and a
68 percent drop in central line infections. “The initiatives
we worked on were focused on preventing errors,” said
Susan Nelson, vice president of Quality.
Memorial also was the only hospital in York County and
one of only 11 hospitals in the state to receive a $48,000
software technology grant from the Pennsylvania Health
Care Cost Containment Council and the Highmark
Foundation. The new software will free our infection
control staff from manual laboratory data collection
and allow them to focus better on finding and
preventing the causes of hospital-acquired infections.
“Currently, the process is very labor intensive, but this
software moves us away from that,” said Susan. “This
is a huge step forward.”

HealthyCommunity
MEMORIAL HOSPITAL BELIEVES TO HAVE A
HEALTHY COMMUNITY we need to provide the best quality
health care available, but we also have to do more. Rooted
deep in Memorial’s mission is our commitment to make health
care available to all, regardless of a person’s ability to pay. In
the past year, Memorial has provided care to more than 11,000
uninsured and underinsured children and adults.
But there is still more we can do. Memorial is committed to
contributing time and resources to nonprofits that are making
York County a healthy place to live, work and play. One way
we show our commitment is through volunteering. Memorial
Hospital associates serve on various nonprofit boards and
committees throughout the community and in the past year,
donated more than 7,000 hours of volunteer time. In addition,
the Hospital donated $100,000 to various community projects
that benefit the health and well-being of York residents. This
idea of giving back continues to spread — Memorial associates
organized a number of fundraisers in the past year to benefit
the United Way, American Red Cross, American Diabetes
Association, American Cancer Society, American Heart
Association and many others.
Memorial is also committed to the financial health of our
community. That is why in 2005 we spent more than $7
million at local businesses.
Barb Forry reads to children at the Jewish Community Center.
She was part of a group of Memorial associates who
participated in the United Way’s Day of Caring.
“We believe it is important for Memorial to take a lead role in
making sure York County is a healthy community. I am proud
of our associates and the Hospital for making a difference in so
many peoples’ lives,” said Sally Dixon, president and CEO.

MemorialGoesTobacco-
Free
MORE THAN A YEAR AGO, Memorial contacted the other
major health care organizations in our community to ask them
if they would like to join us in a tobacco-free campus
initiative. The group agreed and worked together to launch a
joint initiative that went into effect on November 16, 2006.
The policy prohibits tobacco use at all Memorial locations.
Our primary objective is to create a safer, healthier and more
pleasant environment for everyone. As a health care provider,
Memorial knows the risks of second-hand smoke and wants to
be proactive about providing a healthy place for all of our
patients to recover.
“This policy was not designed to make anyone quit smoking.
To comply, patients, visitors and associates cannot use tobacco
products while they are on our campus. Memorial has
provided complementary nicotine replacement to help anyone
who is experiencing discomfort,” said Tobacco Cessation
Educator Renata Tate.
We have received a lot of positive feedback from patients,
visitors and associates and have been contacted by local
businesses that would like to mirror our initiative and
eliminate tobacco use at their companies.
“It was the right thing to do,” said Michael Hady, vice president
of Business Development. “As a leading health care
organization in York County, it is our responsibility to have an
active role in this public health issue.”
Memorial Hospital partnered with Hanover
Hospital, HealthSouth and WellSpan Health to
implement a tobacco-free initiative at all of
our locations.
