BARGAIN
HUNTER
STEPHEN STONES
AT’s new ‘Bargain Hunter’ columnist
This week Steve Ringer caught his pb carp weighing 19lb
4oz from on a Method feeder set-up. It’s an approach that
shouldn’t be ignored in spring, which is why I’ve been on
the look-out for top-quality feeder rods at bargain prices…
RANGE OFFERS
‘GREAT VALUE’
Incredible sub-£40 price
tag on new set of rods
There’s not a hint of
guide rotation when the
Abyss X is put to the test
on sizeable carp.
INTERVIEW
Maver boss Phil Briscoe
gives his opinion on
what makes the Abyss rods
so special:
“I believe there are a number
of factors behind the
unmitigated success of the
Abyss X rod series. With the
current economic climate the
way it is, anglers are looking
for value for money as
arguably the ‘deal clincher’
when it comes to buying
tackle.
“Not only does the range
provide affordable products
with prices that range from
£29.99 to £39.99, but also the
depth of choice means that no
matter what type or length of
rod an angler is looking for the
Abyss X range has it covered.”

CRIBE
WWW.GOFISHING.CO.UK
BY MARK SAWYER
mark.sawyer@bauermedia.co.uk
If ‘value’ is the watchword for your
tackle purchases this summer then
Maver’s budget-priced Abyss X
rods should be on your radar.
Just like Garbolino’s Knock-Out
10ft waggler, the Abyss rods defy the
adage that you only get what you pay
for, and with a sub-£40 price tag they
offer a fantastic bargain.
I had been waiting for the warmer
weather to arrive to trial them ever
since I first saw the range at a Maver
trade show late last year.
And with temperatures approaching
20ºC, it was finally time to head
for Aitkin’s Water – a venue run by
Cambridgeshire club Waterbeach and
full of big, hard-fighting fish.
I must admit to having some
reservations about how the rods would
react to being put under pressure
because very often inexpensive blanks
can have a nasty habit of twisting
when stressed, causing the guides to
rotate outwards away from the spine.
That can make the playing of a big fish
an altogether uneasy experience. I
needn’t have worried.
As soon as I started putting the rods
together I was reminded that on the
looks front they have it all, sporting
smart graphics on a slim carbon blank,
and with a build quality that would
match most flagship models.
I teamed the 12ft two-piece Feeder
rod with 6lb reel line and a small 15g
Method feeder which it punched out
beautifully straight, and I had no
problems dropping it tight up against
a feature. At a push I reckon it could
have coped with chucking a 30g feeder
up to 50 metres.
My first bite saw the blank wrap
around into a full fighting arc – this was
the moment that I had been waiting
for. The curve revealed that the action
was clearly progressive along the
top section, with plenty of grunt
available from the butt for dealing
with bigger lumps.
There wasn’t so much as a hint of
the dreaded guide rotation along the
blank, and as an all-round commercial
feeder rod it is everything and more
that it needs to be for the asking price.
On the day I had matched the rod
with a rear drag Maver Powerlite
reel, and although rear drags can be
sometimes be a bit ‘clutch-sticky’,
this one proved to be perfect and
would make an ideal companion for
the Abyss X.
I also had the two-piece Abyss X
12ft Match rod set up, and although
the fish wouldn’t quite come up and
play ball, I did take the opportunity to
use several different weights of floats
with it. I can report that it is very well
suited to pellet wagglers ranging from
6g right up to 25g.
stamp and bigger.
THE WEEKLY LOOK AT TACKLE INNOVATIONS FOR 2011
BEASTMASTER 850 MARGIN POLE LTD ED
Shimano’s new limited edition
Beastmaster 850 Margin pole is
built like the proverbial brick
outhouse from a Bio-powered
advanced carbon matrix
system for durability.
Everything about this pole is
geared toward providing
added clout. Even the ends of
the section joints have been
extra wrapped with safety zone
strengthening so that a huge
amount of power can be
applied to big fish without the
Drennan’s superb new
Polemaster Super Slick Bungee
Bushes are pure white PTFE
bushes. The reason they have
not been colour-coded to match
elastic denominations, as the
original models were, is that the
dyes used tended to inhibit the
bushes’ naturally slippery
characteristics, slowing the
elastic’s speed of travel.
The Super Slick Bungee
Bushes are available in an
external fitting with sizes to
accommodate elastics from
6-12, 10-16, 14-25 and 18-25 as
SLIM WITH BACKBONES OF STEEL
Daiwa’s two new short rods, the
10ft TDM Pellet Waggler and
TDQ Bomb/Light, are built on
ultra-slim high modulus carbon
blanks featuring classy eye
catching cosmetics, superlightweight
aluminium oxide
guides, and a distinctive reel
seat with lock-down EVA hood.
Although crisp and light in
action, both pack impressive
amounts of power
risk of section crushing.
The top section has an extra
wide internal area. This not
only saves vital inches if and
when you need to trim it back,
but it will also allow for the
fitting of the largest PTFE
bush. The wall strength on the
top sections is easily man
enough to cope with a solid size
20-plus elastic or the thickest
of hollow elastics.
And with rubbers of that
grade in place, the
well as four
internal
that range
from 2mm
up to a huge
4.1mm.
Drennan
has kept the
internal measurements
the same as for its original
Polemaster bushes. The
exaggerated length of PTFE
imparts an added freedom of
movement to the elastic,
stopping it rubbing against the
DAIWA TDM & TDQ 10FT RODS
and are more than capable of
dealing with very large fish.
The pencil-thin profile of the
blanks belies their toughness,
and these newcomers have that
unmistakable steely backbone
we have come to associate with
all Daiwa rods.
The fish-playing action of the
rods could best be described as
being very quickly progressive,
the top section adopting a light
curve with very little
encouragement, but
