If ‘value’ is the watchword for your
tackle purchases this summer then
Maver’s budget-priced Abyss X
rods should be on your radar.
Just like Garbolino’s Knock-Out
10ft waggler, the Abyss rods defy the
adage that you only get what you pay
for, and with a sub-£40 price tag they
offer a fantastic bargain.
I had been waiting for the warmer
weather to arrive to trial them ever
since I first saw the range at a Maver
trade show late last year.
And with temperatures approaching
20ºC, it was finally time to head
for Aitkin’s Water – a venue run by
Cambridgeshire club Waterbeach and
full of big, hard-fighting fish.
I must admit to having some
reservations about how the rods would
react to being put under pressure
because very often inexpensive blanks
can have a nasty habit of twisting
when stressed, causing the guides to
rotate outwards away from the spine.
That can make the playing of a big fish
an altogether uneasy experience. I
needn’t have worried.
As soon as I started putting the rods
together I was reminded that on the
looks front they have it all, sporting
smart graphics on a slim carbon blank,
and with a build quality that would
match most flagship models.
I teamed the 12ft two-piece Feeder
rod with 6lb reel line and a small 15g
Method feeder which it punched out
beautifully straight, and I had no
problems dropping it tight up against
a feature. At a push I reckon it could
have coped with chucking a 30g feeder
up to 50 metres.
My first bite saw the blank wrap
around into a full fighting arc – this was
the moment that I had been waiting
for. The curve revealed that the action
was clearly progressive along the
top section, with plenty of grunt
available from the butt for dealing
with bigger lumps.
There wasn’t so much as a hint of
the dreaded guide rotation along the
blank, and as an all-round commercial
feeder rod it is everything and more
that it needs to be for the asking price.
On the day I had matched the rod
with a rear drag Maver Powerlite
reel, and although rear drags can be
sometimes be a bit ‘clutch-sticky’,
this one proved to be perfect and
would make an ideal companion for
the Abyss X.
I also had the two-piece Abyss X
12ft Match rod set up, and although
the fish wouldn’t quite come up and
play ball, I did take the opportunity to
use several different weights of floats
with it. I can report that it is very well
suited to pellet wagglers ranging from
6g right up to 25g.
