Director of Culture, Mr Matt Cocking While the year feels so young when you look closely at statistics and dates for some of our activities it is close to over. I am a strong believer that you get out what you put in and I feel proud to see our Terrace Gentlemen strive to achieve and feel their passion for their activity when we speak. This week we honoured our debaters with a Spirit Assembly and handing out Debating badges to our Senior A team. The lunchtime entertainment was a hit last week with the 360 AllStars performing their Street Circus in the Primary Quad and this week will see the first of our Terrex Radio lunchtime concerts. Friday’s concert will feature ‘DJ Lacey’ AKA James Lacey Year 12 as he spins his decks playing original and covers music. We hope to see this grow with special guests in weeks to come. Terrex Radio will play Friday lunchtime in the Campbell Centre. Farewell to the Gallipoli Choir - It is at this time that the tour for these gentlemen becomes more real as their journey unwraps. On 2 March the Gallipoli Choir will record at Ghost Gum Studios with the Australian Army Band. The recording will be used for play back on ABC TV throughout the Gallipoli campaign. Monday 16 March is the date for the Blessing and Commissioning as we officially farewell these students. This is open to the public and will begin at 6pm in the All Hallows’ Chapel. Friday 20 March is the farewell concert Trivia and Tunes for the College Community in the Primary Quad starting at 7pm. Tables of 8-10 are available through College Events. On7 April the Australian Army Band Brisbane come to Terrace for final rehearsals with our choir before departing for the shores of Turkey on 17 April. Well done to the boys, families and their directors Mrs Bernadette Debattista and Mr Tim Sherlock. Funding for our choirs to represent Australia - It is a great honour for the College to have been chosen out of many community choirs to represent Australia in Gallipoli and this has extended further this year with another tour in August performing at Hagria Irene in Istanbul and Lone Pine at 100-year commemorative ceremonies. To allow more of our families to have this experience Dr Carroll and I have found additional funding which we will be shared across both tours in 2015. In addition to this we now have more positions for the August tour. Please contact the Culture Office for tour information. Years 5 and 6 GPS Debating – the season starts with a workshop in GT125 on Friday 13 March and finishes Term 2. Theatresports – Terms 2 and 3. Limited positions apply. Middle School Production – Performances May 8 and 9. This year’s production will take the form of a musical and we are currently waiting on the rights before we announce the title. Music, Mr Brad Esbensen This Thursday evening, 26 February, we will be holding a Smart Music information evening in the GT 125 Theatre for the Year 5 students and their parents. The evening will commence at 6pm and will be a great opportunity to learn how to use Smart Music and meet the Music staff. Next Thursday evening, 5 March, we will be holding our first Chamber Music Concert for the year. These concerts provide a wonderful opportunities for solo performances for those in the Year 12 Music Extension class, students preparing for AMEB exams as well as those who simply want to perform a piece they may be working on in lessons, as well as some small group performances. Please see your Music teacher if you are interested in performing. The concert will be held in the Edmund Rice Theatre at Waterford Place and will commence at 6pm. On Wednesday 11 March, many of our groups will be performing at the College Open Day. Once the program has been finalised, event memos will be sent out detailing performance times, venues and dress code for the afternoon. It promises to be an exciting afternoon; showcasing many of the wonderful ensembles we have here at Terrace. Congratulations to the Red Concert Band who performed a rousing rendition of Waltzing Matilda arranged by their conductor, Mr Jan Hewerdine, as part of Tuesday’s Assembly. The Red Concert Band is one of a few new ensembles that we have started this year. The group provides performance opportunities in a wind band setting for our young high school and more advanced primary school students. Next week is a Spirit Assembly for Swimming and there will be no featured musical item. Practice tip of the week: Frequent practice throughout the week in short sessions is much more beneficial than trying to fit long practice sessions into a couple of days. When time and opportunities for actual practice on the instrument are limited, try reading through your music, as you would a book, and imagine how it will sound and visualise yourself performing it on the instrument. The Terrace Music web pages are a great source of information.
