Strong first impressions<br />

Dear Members of the Terrace<br />

Family,<br />

As we approach the midway<br />

part of Term 1, I thought it may be<br />

an opportunity, with a new lens, to<br />

briefly reflect on my perceptions of<br />

Terrace based on my five weeks as<br />

Principal of the College. Needless to<br />

say my perceptions are very positive,<br />

however, like any organisations<br />

there are potential areas for growth.<br />

The list below is by no means<br />

exhaustive but rather some selective<br />

perceptions. I have made similar<br />

comments to the staff and students<br />

These are just some of my early<br />

perceptions and as you can note, I<br />

have been very impressed with Terrace<br />

and strongly believe that the Terrace<br />

Family is very real.<br />

The co-curricular programs continue<br />

to gain momentum and this week at<br />

the College Assembly the Captains<br />

of Debating were announced. I<br />

I am confident that these young men<br />

will lead the Debating Program with<br />

distinction.<br />

At the information nights that have<br />

been held over the last few weeks, I<br />

identified six focus areas for the College<br />

Leadership Team for <strong>2015</strong>. I only briefly<br />

spoke of these areas and over the next<br />

4. Mission and Identity<br />

5. Co-curricular<br />

6. College Leadership Team identity.<br />

To begin this week I will detail our CLT<br />

Mission for <strong>2015</strong>. It reads:<br />

Terrace Family to live the College’s<br />

Mission as a Catholic School in the<br />

Edmund Rice Tradition.<br />

Over the following weeks I will detail<br />

each of the six focus areas.<br />

Finally, this week I ask that you keep<br />

in your thoughts and prayers all those<br />

people in the Terrace Family that need<br />

our support. As a family we are there<br />

to support and nurture each other,<br />

particularly in times of need.<br />

College Dean, Mr Chris Ryan<br />

Supporters’ Groups - This evening,<br />

the Chairs of the various Supporters’<br />

Groups of the College will gather for the<br />

first time for the year. The depth of support<br />

that the College enjoys is quite remarkable<br />

and the leadership of these people is<br />

very important to the living culture of the<br />

school. At last count, I believe there are 19<br />

Supporters’ Groups and the wider parental<br />

engagement across this diverse range of<br />

activities is a blessing. In particular, these<br />

gatherings are enhanced by formation<br />

around our identity as a Catholic School<br />

in the Edmund Rice tradition through the<br />

four touchstones of our charter; Liberating<br />

Education, Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive<br />

Community and Solidarity and Justice.<br />

Our Supporters’ Groups animate our<br />

holistic education menu, consolidate our<br />

relationships and provide opportunities for<br />

service, inclusivity and community building.<br />

Tonight’s meeting is an opportunity for us<br />

all to understand one another’s goals and<br />

to work with one another in realizing them<br />

within the context of our culture and identity.<br />

Thank-you to the hundreds of parents who<br />

engage with our groups and give so much<br />

to the experience of Terrace students.<br />

Staff movements - This week, we welcome<br />

back Mr Glenn Brown, our Property and<br />

Services Manager, from a well-earned long<br />

service leave break. Mr Brown is a loyal,<br />

generous and long-serving member of staff<br />

who is the epitome of what our community<br />

is about. I wish to acknowledge Mr Peter<br />

Ford, Mr Peter Eades, Mr Omar Murua,<br />

Mr Mark Pulpett and Mr John McDonald<br />

for their committed work while someone<br />

who knows Terrace inside-out has been<br />

on break. Omar completed his time with us<br />

this week and we wish him every success.<br />

We also welcome Mrs Therese Feagan<br />

to the role of Assistant to the Director<br />

of Communications, Mr David Potter.<br />

Therese joins us while Mrs Alex Ardourel<br />

is on maternity leave. We offer Alex, her<br />

son Auguste Roy who arrived on Monday<br />

morning, and husband Julien, our very best<br />

wishes and congratulations.<br />

Building update - The recent weather<br />

has been challenging our timelines but<br />

the roof repair on the Music and Science<br />

building nearest the bottom car park is now<br />

nearing completion. The big job of replacing<br />

the copper roof on the Centenary Building<br />

(middle building on the Victoria Street side)<br />

is now almost complete. The project team<br />

will now commence the replacement of<br />

the copper roof on the Level 5 staffroom<br />

building - the staff are to be commended<br />

and thanked for their extraordinary patience<br />

as we have worked through this extended<br />

project. There are several other smaller<br />

projects that are still being worked on as<br />

a result of the November storm event on<br />

Level 8 in the GT125 building and in the<br />

Treacy Building in particular. Through good<br />

planning and co-operation with our project<br />

management team, there has been minimal<br />

impact on teaching and learning but we<br />

thank all students and teachers for their<br />

ongoing co-operation. Finally, the scope<br />

of the repair required in the Drama and<br />

Film and Television classrooms has been<br />

completed and this refurbishment will take<br />

until the end of Term 2 to complete. Our goal<br />

is that these two subjects ultimately gain<br />

better classroom spaces and resources as<br />

a result.<br />

Dean of Students, Mr Damien Fall<br />

One aspect of maintaining high<br />

standards in schools involves the<br />

concept of ‘sweating the small stuff’.<br />

This means that, while keeping a close eye<br />

on the big educational, behavioural and<br />

pastoral issues, it also is important to have<br />

high expectations around matters such as<br />

hair and uniform.<br />

This week, I would like to target school<br />

socks as a topic of interest. It is expected<br />

that students wear their socks fully pulled up<br />

at all times, including while travelling to and<br />

from school. The problem is, many boys like<br />

to recycle socks that are too old and small<br />

for them, so keeping them up becomes<br />

impossible. I would ask that parents assist<br />

us by doing an ‘audit’ of school socks and<br />

possibly purchase some new pairs if some<br />

are past their best. Garters also are a<br />

wonderful idea and can be a great help in<br />

this regard – a few pieces of elastic are a<br />

simple solution. I ask for parental support<br />

with this matter as it is important that the<br />

uniform is worn well.<br />

It is not often that the entire round of GPS<br />

sport is cancelled as occurred during last<br />

weekend’s weather event. No doubt, there<br />

were many unhappy boys who missed out<br />

on their weekly fix of competitive sport. As<br />

I enjoyed a more relaxed Saturday than<br />

usual, I reflected on the importance of<br />

young men being kept active and taking<br />

part in healthy, competitive sport. Not only<br />

does it bring physical benefits but there are<br />

great opportunities for personal growth that<br />

come from team competition. As always, I<br />

strongly encourage our young men to be as<br />

widely involved as possible.<br />

Next Friday 6 March, the GPS Swimming<br />

Championships will be held at BAC. To<br />

provide support for our swimmers, we will<br />

be sending students from Years 5, 6 and<br />

7 as spectators after morning Tutor Group<br />

until lunch time. Students from Years 8 and<br />

12 will be leaving the College after lunch to<br />

support our swimmers. Each year level is<br />

expected to attend only one GPS event per<br />

year, and I ask that all of these students are<br />

in attendance. I will write to all families with<br />

further details in the next few days.<br />

As we have hit the mid-term mark, we are<br />

around the time when some students will<br />

again become due for a haircut. It would be<br />

appreciated if parents could be proactive in<br />

this regard and arrange for this to happen<br />

if required. The College guidelines for<br />

haircuts can be found in the student diary.<br />

I hope that our students are well into routine<br />

with homework, assignments and revision.<br />

The term is racing away and good planning<br />

and time management are essential keys to<br />

success. I wish all of our young men well<br />

with their studies and encourage them to<br />

always give their very best.<br />

Dean of Studies, Mrs Julie Quinn<br />

As Week 5 comes to a close, I hope that<br />

all our boys are confident that they are<br />

striving to do their best.<br />

This week is the start of our “accountability”<br />

week with assignments starting to be due.<br />

As such, it is most important that key dates<br />

from assessment calendars are in diaries<br />

and time is being invested into planning and<br />

drafting for these assignments. With much<br />

support offered at Terrace to students,<br />

assignment work should be where we<br />

maximise our outcomes.<br />

One of the key strategies that we have<br />

discussed with students is their requirement<br />

to log their hours in their diary. I use the<br />

analogy of elite sports people who are able<br />

to exactly quote their training schedules<br />

of the number of kilometres swum or run.<br />

They are able to link their outcomes back to<br />

their commitment in their programs.<br />

It is most important that students are also<br />

aware of the time invested in their subjects<br />

and the subsequent outcome from these<br />

subjects. I also would very much<br />

appreciate if parents could continue to sign<br />

the diary on a weekly basis. Your support<br />

and interest is paramount to the best<br />

possible outcomes.<br />

Last week our Senior students completed a<br />

workshop in the rules and formats of genres<br />

for the writing task. These workshops<br />

were followed by an actual attempt at a<br />

writing task paper. We will receive results<br />

from the external markers that will allow<br />

us to shape further directions but the<br />

focus and commitment of our Seniors in<br />

these workshops and practice paper were<br />

exemplary.<br />

I will continue to track and monitor student<br />

usage of laptops with the help of our<br />

IT Department. To date, I am pleased<br />

that the majority of our boys are using<br />

devices for the intended reasons. Our<br />

wonderful tradition of academic excellence,<br />

exemplified at our recent Medal Assembly,<br />

would be at risk if students chose to use<br />

their BYOD unwisely.<br />

Many great stories are told and enacted at<br />

Terrace daily - something that I feel most<br />

privileged to be sharing. When speaking<br />

with a current Year 12 student about his<br />

progress this year compared to last year,<br />

he responded very positively indicating<br />

that he was investing much more time in<br />

his studies and felt that he would produce<br />

much stronger outcomes this year.<br />

When asked why this was happening he<br />

responded by saying that he had shut down<br />

his Facebook account, had a study plan,<br />

was doing homework and regular revision,<br />

was exercising and eating well, was going<br />

to bed at a good hour so he could be fresh<br />

for school the next day which resulted in his<br />

being very focussed in the classroom and<br />

hence understanding work much better.<br />

My next question was: “How and why<br />

did you do this?” His answer: “Over the<br />

holidays I reflected on the times when I<br />

was intending to commit to something and<br />

then didn’t follow through. I don’t want my<br />

life habits to follow this pattern so I have<br />

committed “.<br />

So many of our young men are inspirational.<br />

PREPARATION IS VITAL TO SUCCESS IN EVERYTHING A TERRACE GENTLEMAN<br />

DOES – INCLUDING QCS.<br />

Middle School, Mr Russell Cooper<br />

While listening to the Ash Wednesday<br />

Liturgy message it occurred to me<br />

that parallels can be drawn between that<br />

service and the Scholars Assembly, in which<br />

OP 1 students were commended on their<br />

success. During the Scholars Assembly<br />

a week prior, Dean of Studies Mrs Julie<br />

Quinn relayed some of the strategies that<br />

each boy used in their quest for excellence<br />

and it was apparent that sacrifice was a<br />

common theme.<br />

Sacrificing something for Lent, be it<br />

chocolate or time on the PlayStation 4,<br />

can in the long run teach us to appreciate<br />

those things even more. The same can be<br />

said for study. By sacrificing leisure time<br />

for revision or study, students can reduce<br />

stress and feel well-prepared for a task or<br />

exam. Hopefully this will transfer into better<br />

grades, and to paraphrase 2104 School<br />

Dux, Declan Sela: The hard times are<br />

forgotten but the achievement is not.<br />

That is not to say that leisure time should<br />

be forsaken altogether. Indeed, two of the<br />

OP1 graduates, Lachlan Ho and Thomas<br />

Mulherin, spoke of the need to intersperse<br />

study with relaxation time. Ideally, leisure<br />

time should include family time and also<br />

what *Hodapp and Hodapp (1991) call<br />

incentives. Incentives, need not (and nor<br />

should they not) be simply material reward.<br />

Encourage your son to break up homework<br />

with a run or a swim or even some television<br />

time. Remember, that ultimately, by the<br />

time your son reaches the Senior phase of<br />

his schooling at Terrace, the hope is that he<br />

will be a self-guided, intrinsically motivated<br />

learner and by then, study and homework<br />

are as much a part of his routine as dinner<br />

or breakfast.<br />

Congratulations to all Middle School<br />

Academic medal winners, who no doubt<br />

made many sacrifices to achieve such<br />

outstanding results last year, it is just the<br />

kind of reward of which Declan Sela spoke.<br />

A reminder to all students that not only are<br />

a number of assignments due in over the<br />

next week or two, but a number more will<br />

be distributed. Be sure to keep your study<br />

planner updated and all the best.<br />

Lent is a season of 40 days, not counting Sundays, which begins<br />

on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes<br />

from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means “spring.” The 40<br />

days represent the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring<br />

the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry.<br />

Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming<br />

of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early<br />

church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts to Christianity for<br />

baptism.<br />

Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often<br />

choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of<br />

themselves for others as a sign of wanting to become a better<br />

person and closer to God.<br />

This week our students begin their annual Lenten Appeal to support<br />

their House Friendship Groups. I have been impressed by the<br />

initiatives of our Senior student leaders who are working with their<br />

Houses to raise awareness and funds to assist their Friendship<br />

Group.<br />

Director of Culture, Mr Matt Cocking<br />

While the year feels so young when you<br />

look closely at statistics and dates for<br />

some of our activities it is close to over. I am<br />

a strong believer that you get out what you<br />

put in and I feel proud to see our Terrace<br />

Gentlemen strive to achieve and feel their<br />

passion for their activity when we speak.<br />

This week we honoured our debaters<br />

with a Spirit Assembly and handing out<br />

Debating badges to our Senior A team.<br />

The lunchtime entertainment was a hit last<br />

week with the 360 AllStars performing their<br />

Street Circus in the Primary Quad and this<br />

week will see the first of our Terrex Radio<br />

lunchtime concerts. Friday’s concert will<br />

feature ‘DJ Lacey’ AKA James Lacey Year<br />

12 as he spins his decks playing original<br />

and covers music. We hope to see this<br />

grow with special guests in weeks to come.<br />

Terrex Radio will play Friday lunchtime in<br />

the Campbell Centre.<br />

Farewell to the Gallipoli Choir - It is at this<br />

time that the tour for these gentlemen<br />

becomes more real as their journey<br />

unwraps. On 2 March the Gallipoli Choir<br />

will record at Ghost Gum Studios with<br />

the Australian Army Band. The recording<br />

will be used for play back on ABC TV<br />

throughout the Gallipoli campaign. Monday<br />

16 March is the date for the Blessing and<br />

Commissioning as we officially farewell<br />

these students. This is open to the public<br />

and will begin at 6pm in the All Hallows’<br />

Chapel. Friday 20 March is the farewell<br />

concert Trivia and Tunes for the College<br />

Community in the Primary Quad starting at<br />

7pm. Tables of 8-10 are available through<br />

College Events. On7 April the Australian<br />

Army Band Brisbane come to Terrace<br />

for final rehearsals with our choir before<br />

departing for the shores of Turkey on 17<br />

April. Well done to the boys, families and<br />

their directors Mrs Bernadette Debattista<br />

and Mr Tim Sherlock.<br />

Funding for our choirs to represent<br />

Australia - It is a great honour for the<br />

College to have been chosen out of many<br />

community choirs to represent Australia in<br />

Gallipoli and this has extended further this<br />

year with another tour in August performing<br />

at Hagria Irene in Istanbul and Lone Pine<br />

at 100-year commemorative ceremonies.<br />

To allow more of our families to have this<br />

experience Dr Carroll and I have found<br />

additional funding which we will be shared<br />

across both tours in <strong>2015</strong>. In addition to this<br />

we now have more positions for the August<br />

tour. Please contact the Culture Office for<br />

Music, Mr Brad Esbensen<br />

This Thursday evening, <strong>26</strong> <strong>Feb</strong>ruary,<br />

we will be holding a Smart Music<br />

information evening in the GT 125 Theatre<br />

for the Year 5 students and their parents.<br />

The evening will commence at 6pm and will<br />

be a great opportunity to learn how to use<br />

Smart Music and meet the Music staff.<br />

Next Thursday evening, 5 March, we<br />

will be holding our first Chamber Music<br />

Concert for the year. These concerts<br />

provide a wonderful opportunities for solo<br />

performances for those in the Year 12<br />

Music Extension class, students preparing<br />

for AMEB exams as well as those who<br />

simply want to perform a piece they may<br />

be working on in lessons, as well as some<br />

small group performances. Please see<br />

your Music teacher if you are interested in<br />

performing. The concert will be held in the<br />

Edmund Rice Theatre at Waterford Place<br />

and will commence at 6pm.<br />

On Wednesday 11 March, many of our<br />

groups will be performing at the College<br />

Open Day. Once the program has been<br />

finalised, event memos will be sent out<br />

detailing performance times, venues and<br />

dress code for the afternoon. It promises to<br />

be an exciting afternoon; showcasing many<br />

of the wonderful ensembles we have here<br />

at Terrace.<br />

Congratulations to the Red Concert Band<br />

who performed a rousing rendition<br />

of Waltzing Matilda arranged by their<br />

conductor, Mr Jan Hewerdine, as part of<br />

Tuesday’s Assembly. The Red Concert<br />

Band is one of a few new ensembles that we<br />

have started this year. The group provides<br />

performance opportunities in a wind band<br />

setting for our young high school and more<br />

advanced primary school students. Next<br />

week is a Spirit Assembly for Swimming<br />

and there will be no featured musical item.<br />

Practice tip of the week: Frequent<br />

practice throughout the week in short<br />

sessions is much more beneficial than trying<br />

to fit long practice sessions into a couple<br />

of days. When time and opportunities<br />

for actual practice on the instrument are<br />

limited, try reading through your music, as<br />

you would a book, and imagine how it will<br />

sound and visualise yourself performing it<br />

on the instrument.<br />

Waterford Place, Mr Damien Cuddihy<br />

Last Friday we gathered on the Basketball court at Waterford<br />

Place to watch an educational presentation from Brainstorm<br />

Productions called The Hurting Game. This presentation showed<br />

your sons how ongoing negative relationships at school and online<br />

can affect their self-esteem and their future. I thought the boys<br />

bought into the process exceptionally well and it’s a topic that might<br />

be worth bringing up at the dinner table.<br />

All the students at Waterford are currently very busy in completing a<br />

range of assignments that are due in over the next two weeks. Many<br />

expressed relief that GPS sport was cancelled on the weekend as<br />

it allowed them some extra time to work on assignments. I suspect<br />

this weekend should see a concerted effort in completing drafts.<br />

The way the cohort has embraced the tutoring sessions on offer in<br />

the morning has been most impressive. On a number of mornings<br />

we have had in excess of 40 students looking for assistance with<br />

various subjects. At Friday Roll Call last week we had 52 students<br />

working through the process. With the transition from assignments<br />

to revision commencing over the next fortnight I’m sure these<br />

numbers will continue to build as we approach exams.<br />

Competition is commonly referred to as<br />

an event or contest, in which people<br />

take part in order to establish superiority or<br />

supremacy in a particular area. Our history<br />

as a human race is plagued with countless<br />

examples of great rivalries in all facets<br />

of life. From Roger Federer and Rafael<br />

Nadal’s’ tireless battles to the glorified<br />

encounters between Australia and New<br />

Zealand, a common factor that is evident in<br />

all rivalries is the presence of history. So, it<br />

is no surprise that the pinnacle of schoolboy<br />

competition is that of Terrace v Nudgee.<br />

Now, a quick history lesson. More than 124<br />

years ago, Br Ambrose Treacy stood out in<br />

the distant countryside, trying to find money<br />

for a boarding school in the far reaches of<br />

Brisbane. St Joseph’s College, Gregory<br />

Terrace was to be split into two and St<br />

Joseph’s College, Nudgee was to be born.<br />

And so a historic battle took place in order<br />

to determine the colours of a school. As the<br />

story goes, one school lost that day and<br />

received the mighty ‘red and black’ whilst<br />

the other walked away with the ‘blue and<br />

white’.<br />

On that note, my congratulations to the First<br />

VI which walked away from the Campbell<br />

Centre victorious in our most recent<br />

encounter. However, I was left astounded<br />

at the sheer volume of the Nudgee crowd<br />

despite their numbers being limited. Their<br />

pride and passion was on display for all to<br />

see.<br />

I want that. We want that. Terrace needs<br />

that.<br />

So, this got Reuben, Hugh, Marcel and<br />

I thinking. How can we possibly tap into<br />

the same pride and passion that exists in<br />

each and every single Terracian? But, why<br />

reinvent the wheel? Success leaves clues.<br />

Pride in our school is everything. It’s not<br />

just a switch that you can turn on and off<br />

when needs be. Receiving an education<br />

at this great school does not just stop and<br />

start at the commencement and conclusion<br />

of each day. Similarly, the opportunity to be<br />

a part of the ‘red and black’ is a privilege<br />

founded on a legacy - one which we must<br />

vow to uphold.<br />

It is with this, that we officially unveil the<br />

GT Spirit Generals consisting of Darcy<br />

Moreland, William Beirne, Joe Pozzi,<br />

Matt Kendall, George Greathead and<br />

Jack Beashel.<br />

These men will embody what it truly means<br />

to be a part of this fine College. They will<br />

harness the inner-Terracian present within<br />

all of us. And these men will “bleed the red<br />

and black.”<br />

We are now halfway through the term and approaching a busy month of March starting with<br />

our TLG Meeting on Monday 2 March. Our guest speaker is Kerry Leech – a practising<br />

sports dietician who will give some valuable nutritional advice for parents of adolescent boys.<br />

All parents are welcome to attend and join us for morning tea afterwards in the Founders’ Room.<br />

The Terrace Open Day will be on Wednesday, 11 March from 4-7pm. The TLG will be managing<br />

the hospitality and will require volunteers on this day for one-hour slots. Please email<br />

The Cookbook launch at Tennyson will be on Friday, 27 March. Tickets are now available via the<br />

website on College Events.<br />

The GT140 Gala Ball will be the event of the year on the Terrace calendar. Please keep the date<br />

Performing Arts<br />

The TPA has a number of fundraising events coming up to assist the boys who are travelling to Gallipoli to sing at the<br />

Anzac Day services. The events are open to all families even if your boys do not participate in performing arts.<br />

Welcome Movie afternoon on Sunday 8 March at the Blue Room Cinebar Rosalie.. The heart-warming sequel The<br />

Second Best Marigold Hotel starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Richard Gere and more from 3.30pm.<br />

Tickets are $25 Adults or $22.50 for seniors/students. You can book for this event on Trybooking/com... Marigold Hotel<br />

Movie Club. Please book as soon as possible so we can finalise the booking with the cinema.<br />

Tunes and Trivia night on Friday 20 March. This is a major fundraiser to assist the boys travelling to Gallipoli. We<br />

invite all Terrace families to attend. Bring a table of 8 or 10 or book just for yourself and be allocated to a table.<br />

Come and enjoy the fun.The event is to be held outdoors under the stars, or in the Campbell Centre if the sky is filled by<br />

rain.Tickets are $35 per head and there are some excellent prizes on offer. Our Gallipoli Choir is performing at the start<br />

of this event and that is a true slice of Heaven to hear.<br />
