Enclosed is the packet for the 2010 <strong>Internship</strong> Programme.<br />

The <strong>World</strong> <strong>YWCA</strong> Young Women’s <strong>Internship</strong> Programme is intended to<br />

increase the number of globally experienced and trained leaders who will<br />

return to their associations to share their experiences and learning with as<br />

well as provide leadership for increased and improved understanding of<br />

what the world movement is all about. Young women applicants between<br />

the ages of 22-30 years endorsed by their Member association are invited<br />

to apply.<br />

We are particularly seeking applicants with interest and experience in<br />

advocacy and communications around the key priorities of the <strong>World</strong> <strong>YWCA</strong><br />

including human rights, sexual and reproductive health and HIV&AIDS, and<br />

violence against women. Interns need to have strong organisational skills,<br />

ability to work well in teams and to juggle multiple priorities.<br />

The one-year Programme (January 12 to December 17, 2010) provides a<br />

special opportunity for two young women, to work as part of the <strong>World</strong> <strong>YWCA</strong><br />

staff and volunteer team in Geneva.<br />

There will be strong emphasis on advocacy, communication and young<br />

women’s leadership in 2010. The internship programme will include<br />

coordination of an international young women’s forum; evaluating young<br />

women’s participation in the <strong>YWCA</strong> movement; supporting work to eliminate<br />

violence against women and promotion of women’s security; HIV and AIDS<br />

and sexual reproductive health; supporting <strong>World</strong> <strong>YWCA</strong> representation at the<br />

sessions of United Nations Human Rights Council, CEDAW Committee and<br />

other events.<br />

Short –term/Advocacy <strong>Internship</strong><br />

Up to four young women will be selected to participate at either the UN<br />

Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York, sessions of the<br />

CEDAW Committee and UN Human Rights Council in Geneva or other<br />

international forum.<br />

Responsibilities of Member Associations submitting internship<br />

applications:<br />

1. To recommend and endorse any applications submitted to the <strong>World</strong><br />

<strong>YWCA</strong> for consideration. This should include an individual assessment of<br />

the abilities and experience of the applicant, as well as her potential to<br />

relate her experience to the international level.<br />

2. The Member Association should work with each interested young woman<br />

to ensure that her application is complete and contains all the necessary<br />

information to be fully considered by the <strong>World</strong> Office. It is necessary that<br />

Member associations endorse their applications and forward no more than<br />

four candidates to the <strong>World</strong> Office.<br />

3. If selected, the Member Association will support preparation for the<br />

internship. This includes developing a plan for when she returns to her<br />

association, how she can share her experiences, and how her new skills<br />

and leadership abilities can be productively used for the association. This<br />

preparatory work is invaluable to the success of the internship experience<br />

for all concerned.<br />

4. To pay 20% of the round-trip airfare for the applicant.<br />

5. To assist the selected participant with visa and travel arrangements<br />

6. The <strong>World</strong> <strong>YWCA</strong> especially encourages young women living with HIV to<br />

apply to the <strong>Internship</strong>s Programme.<br />

Responsibilities of the <strong>World</strong> <strong>YWCA</strong>:<br />

The <strong>World</strong> Office is responsible for 80% of the air-ticket (most economical<br />

and most direct route), the living arrangements, stipend and programme<br />

content of <strong>World</strong> <strong>YWCA</strong> internship programme. Interns live independently in a<br />

residence/ hostel and the stipend provided covers basic food and incidentals.<br />

Selection Process and Timeline:<br />

The deadline for receipt of applications by the <strong>World</strong> <strong>YWCA</strong> is August 31,<br />

2009.<br />

Member Associations will be notified by early October 2009 of the decisions<br />

for the one-year internship to begin in January 12, 2010 and Advocacy/ Shortterm<br />

internships.<br />

We encourage you to share this information as widely as possible with young<br />

women in your association. Please note that a description of the internship<br />

programme is included in this application packet and also available on the<br />

<strong>World</strong> <strong>YWCA</strong> website (www.worldywca.org).<br />
