The Inner Necessities of Leadership

the imagination or the intelligence from which it
begins. Our ability to live and thrive in a complex,
changing world as leaders, consultants, coaches or
teachers depends on how well we build the bridge
between what is occurring on the inside and the
actions we must take on t he outside”.

In this workshop David will explore with us “The
Inner Necessities of Leadership”, those internal
faculties and abilities that are the foundations for
all the outward actions we have to take in
positions of responsibility. He will also explore the
way the cultivation of self-knowledge actually
makes us fuller participants in a world from which
we often try to hide.
David will look at such Inner Necessities as:
Relationship With Time - When the internal
shaping of our identity changes it is often a time
to change our outer world accordingly. In a way,
we have to constantly pay attention to know what
season it is in our inner life; what time it is in our
personal and professional lives. What pattern is
coming to maturity? What is about to happen?
Knowing what time it is in the life-cycle of an idea,
a belief, a product, a service or a relationship and
having the ability to cut through surface
entanglements when decisive, appropriate action
must be taken.
Time’s Relationship to Stress - Wallace Stevens
said, “Perhaps the truth depends upon a walk
around a lake”. We will look at the way stress
results from an unhealthy relationship with time,
particularly the very human necessity for an
experience of timelessness. This sense of
timelessness is necessary not only at weekends
and on holiday but in the midst of our endeavours.

Finding radical simplicity amidst complexity - One
of the primary necessities of leadership lies in the
area of pattern recognition - the ability to
recognise new demands on a system, whether
that be new products, or changing attitudes.
Intuition - Sometimes the unwillingness to
recognize an internal intuition or pattern in the
area of our private or professional lives creates an
equivalent blind spot in our strategies in every day
business.
Courage - The necessity of stepping onto a
sometimes narrow piece of ground which lies at a
pivotal center of the pattern rather than being
caught in the safer complications at the outer
edge of the circle. Courage as the willingness to
confront self-deceptions.
Self Knowledge - The necessity of coming to
know, confronting and developing one’s flaws and
abilities and the character to go with it. The need
to understand how others see us and how we
affect the world around us.

Becoming Visible in the World - The necessity of
understanding that visibility in a leadership role
means taking on identities that are larger than our
understanding of ourselves, that many times our
perceived identity in an organisation has a
timeless almost mythological dimension that
sometimes has very little to do with our actual
personality.
Balance/Fully Engaging - Engaging in conversation
within our “Three Marriages” - putting our
relationship with our work into an equal
conversation with our relationships at home and
our relationship with ourselves.
Self-Compassion & Imagination - Cultivating an
imaginative life that has a larger perspective than
the urgencies of work and career. Beyond the
normal business definition of the imagination as
the ability to think up new things there is a deeper
interpretation of the imagination as a much larger
faculty of belonging and creativity in a changing,
complex world.

David Whyte
David is first and foremost a poet; he grew up
among the hills and valleys of Yorkshire and
currently lives with his family in the Pacific
Northwest. He holds a degree in Marine Biology
and has travelled extensively. He is a fellow of the
Said Business School, University of Oxford.
His work has struck a resonant chord within
organisations and the personal and professional
development arenas around the world. He is an
inspiring speaker who, with a poet’s insight,
speaks to our human condition, and to the core of
the challenges individuals and organisations face
today and offers a vision for the way ahead.

The Kindersley Centre, Lambourn, Berkshire.
David was inspired by this venue last year and
asked to return. The participants also loved it as a
perfect setting for the workshop, “an inspirational

The award winning Kindersley Centre is set high
on the beautiful Berkshire Downs.

Fee
£230 + VAT (£270.25)
if paid by 14 th September 2007 or
£280 + VAT (£329.00) if paid thereafter.
Lunch at the Centre’s excellent organic restaurant
and refreshments are included in the fee.
Bursaries
We offer a bursary scheme for not-for-profit
organisations and some private individuals.
Cancellation
There will be a 50% cancellation charge for
cancellations received within 14 days of the
seminar and 100% cancellation charge for
cancellations received within 7 days of the
seminar.
