National health workforce reform agenda<br />

• COAG health reform and NPA (2008)<br />

− Acknowledgment that large scale<br />

workforce reform is necessary with a<br />

particular focus on linking efforts of<br />

health and higher education<br />

sectors.<br />

• $1.1bn new funding over 4 years to:<br />

– Develop a sound evidence base to<br />

inform national reform<br />

– Devise policy and programs that<br />

facilitate workforce reform<br />

– Work across jurisdictions, sectors,<br />

organisations and professions.<br />

• <strong>Health</strong> Workforce Australia established in<br />

July 2009 to lead implementation of NPA<br />

‣ Established as a Commonwealth Statutory Authority<br />

• Board comprises independent Chair (The Hon Jim McGinty),<br />

nominees from jurisdictions (9) and other directors (3).<br />

•part of a modernised curriculum for health profession<br />

degrees (e.g. Dr Kathleen Gray, University of Melbourne)<br />

•developed in skills and delivery of clinical supervision.<br />

•offered in clinical training placements.<br />

Seeking to promote greater use of technology and optimise<br />

workforce capacity and capability to adopt and apply e-<br />

health solutions:<br />

• Develop partnerships with those undertaking e-health<br />

initiatives to consider workforce issues in the<br />

development, implementation and evaluation of<br />

programs.<br />

• Follow the implementation of e-health Initiatives in<br />

Australia to identify areas where there maybe<br />

opportunities for workforce reform.<br />

Requested by key stakeholders to undertake a study of the<br />

health information workforce:<br />

• e-health is generating the requirement for greater<br />

workforce capacity.<br />

• Moves to national activity based hospital funding will<br />

increase workforce demand.<br />

• Current demand for existing education and training is<br />

sub optimal.<br />
