A Remembrance
Richard M. Milanovich
1942–2012
on the cover: Chairman Richard M. Milanovich and (inset) at the summit of Mount San Jacinto.
Chairman Richard M. Milanovich led the Agua
Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians for nearly three
decades and was a good friend to everyone he met.
He was charismatic and you wanted to be around him
because he always saw the good side of everything.
With a smile and a twinkle in his eyes, you could
always count on him being honest with you, even at
those times when he was about to make a decision
that might not be in your favor. He was a dynamic
and effective leader who wore the mantle of that
responsibility well.
I long admired his devotion to the culture and
history of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.
The Chairman would set time aside to stop by the
Museum unannounced to view the latest exhibition
– sometimes staying for hours to read each label.
Those visits reflected a deep interest in knowing more
about his culture, rather than a need to make a public
appearance.
He was the gracious link between Tribal and non-Tribal
members of our desert communities. The Chairman
resolved issues gracefully out of his desire to make
things work for the betterment of all. He loved the land
upon which he grew up, and guided decisions that
would respect the land and keep it as is or improve it.
Agua Caliente Cultural Museum conducted numerous
oral histories with Chairman Milanovich. In 2006,
an interviewer asked him, “…where would you like
to see the Tribe go in terms of its future?” Chairman
Milanovich responded, “…to be willing to stand up
when we see a wrong being done and try to rectify it,
being ones to ensure our Tribal members and those
associated with Tribal members a better lifestyle;
give them a better foothold in their ability to sustain
themselves with high self-esteem, high self-value, selfworth
– give them that sense of accomplishment, that
sense of pride of who they are, who their ancestors
were, and how they’re going to carry on through
their children and how their children should handle
themselves into the future.”
We are all blessed to have known such a man. I know
that the Chairman would have expressed my thoughts
more humbly. His joy came from doing all the good
that he did – knowing in his heart it would make life
better for others.
A Life in Pictures
On the occasion of the 2011 Dinner in the Canyons,
Agua Caliente Cultural Museum honored Chairman
Richard M. Milanovich for his vision, leadership, and
encouragement that has helped establish and position
the Museum as an important and respected cultural and
educational institution.
In honor of Chairman Milanovich, Executive Director
Michael Hammond and Museum Chairwoman Mildred
L. Browne presented to members of the Agua Caliente
Band of Cahuilla Indians a painting commissioned
by the Museum of the first all-woman Tribal Council.
Upon receiving this gift for the Tribe, the Chairman
spoke of the many important accomplishments of
this distinguished group of Tribal leaders, his mother
LaVerne Saubel among them, that will forever guide
and benefit him, the Tribe, and communities of the
Coachella Valley.
“The most important thing you’ve done for the Tribe is the preservation
of the culture…You understand the importance of that – and that’s the
reason you’ve pushed and helped and walked along side of us to get
this [new Museum] project completed and done.”
The Museum is in the planning phase
of a new exhibition that will open
in the fall of 2013 and tell about life
experiences of people on historic
Section 14 – a square-mile parcel
of prime reservation real estate in
downtown Palm Springs owned by the
Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians
and individual Tribal members.
This historic tract of land that extends
from Indian Canyon Drive to Sunrise
Way and from Ramon Road to Alejo
Street was home to a diversity of
culture, race, ethnicity, economic
wealth, and political and social
interests. What life was like on Section
14 will be the subject of this exhibition.
You can be part of creating this exciting
exhibition by attending this planning
event. It will be a unique opportunity
to help tell the story of Section 14.
Bring your photos, articles, and
memorabilia about life on Section 14
to show Museum staff and volunteers.
Share and compare your stories with
friends and acquaintances, and help
us identify historic photographs that
will be on display from the Museum
archives. If you wish, you may talk with
Museum staff about scheduling a time
in the future to record an oral history
about your own Section 14 experiences.
New! In the Beginning
It is said that the Cahuilla Creation
stories are from time immemorial,
taught to the people by their creator,
Mukat. The Museum has selected three
versions recorded in the first half of the
20th century.
The stories differ, but contain the
same moral codes and laws. Telling and
hearing these stories repeatedly over
time reinforced cultural sharing and
behavior for the Cahuilla throughout
their lives.
Western Science Seeks
Cultural Knowledge
Baskets are important not only amongst
the Cahuilla, but for Native peoples
throughout the west and northwest
regions of the United States. It seems
fitting, then, to focus the eyes of
conservators on baskets and other
items made from plant materials in
the collections of the Agua Caliente
Cultural Museum.
This exhibition demonstrates the kinds
of discoveries that UCLA graduate
conservation students made in the
investigation and treatment of cultural
objects in the Museum collections.
