P.O.A President
Barry L. Cook
R
ick McCarroll did a great job as
the POA President for the past
two years and I will attempt to follow
in his footsteps. Also, I am fortunate
to have Peter Henrico and Mason Delafield joining
Mike Starshak, Kathy Vodak, Jack Brennan and
Spencer Everett on the Executive Committee.
The Community Service Center is complete and
fully operational. I hope many of you attended the
Open House held last month and are proud of the
finest facility of its type in South Florida.
Soon, many of us will be headed to our summer
locations. Remember the POA offers seasonal
inspection service while you are away. Inspections
are held weekly and we have the ability, working
with the Maintenance Department, to handle any
problems that may arise. This is good, reasonably
priced insurance against the Florida heat and
humidity.
Comcast continues to be the source of numerous
complaints. We met with their regional executives to
discuss many of our issues and will be expecting an
improved level of service. Comcast agreed to place
two technical support personnel at Quail Ridge,
weekly, to identify areas which need improvement.
This will include testing central nodes, locating and
replacing lines with weak signals and handling
customer service problems. Please refer to the “facts
blast” as well as information posted on Channel 63
regarding this issue.
The whitefly continues to be a problem with the
ficus hedges. At our villa, my wife, “The One Who
Must Be Obeyed,” decided to get rid of our hedges
and replace them with more updated landscaping.
Victor’s crew came in the next week and planted
Robellini and Cat Palms for a reasonable price. I
like the new look and we don’t have spray techs and
hedge trimmers around our now peaceful patio. Try
a new look, I think you’ll like it.
Please let us know of your suggestions for ways to
improve Quail Ridge.
Thanks,
Barry
Club President
Kent Blair
s your new president, I’m proud
A and honored to have the
opportunity to serve you over the
next year. This is Prudy’s and my
13th season at Quail, and we have seen many
changes during that time – the renovation of the
Clubhouse, the construction of the Fitness and
Business Centers and, most recently, the completion
of the Community Services Center.
These projects have allowed Quail to stay
competitive during a very difficult time for privately
-owned golf and country clubs. My guess is that the
next few years will see more changes. The Board is
in the final stages of developing a new long-range
strategic plan based upon the responses from the
recent member survey.
The entire range of amenities offered by our Club
will be reviewed and plans developed to satisfy our
members’ needs. A master planning firm will be
chosen shortly to facilitate this process. The Board
will keep you informed of our findings as they
emerge.
Thank you,
Kent
Before leaving Quail Ridge …
● During the summer months, when you are
not at Quail Ridge, you can place your
service on “Seasonal Hold” by contacting
COMCAST at 1-800-266-2278.
● DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR COMCAST
BOXES OR MODEMS WHEN YOU ARE
NOT HERE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.
During the summer months, Comcast will
download updates to your boxes, if they are
disconnected it will cause a problem when
you reconnect your boxes.
General Manager’s Report
by Donald “Chip” Misch, CCM
General Manager/COO
I
trust you have all received and
viewed the first issue of “Q
Magazine.” We are particularly
pleased with the look and believe it truly captures all
of what makes Quail Ridge so special – our members
and a vibrant and active club culture. This source will
play an active role in our marketing efforts, so please
feel free to stop by realty and ask us to send it to your
friends. The next issue is slated for fall 2013.
NOW is certainly a great time to buy in Quail Ridge,
with plenty to offer, as well as, a nice incentive to
entice prospective buyers to buy. We are seeing
unprecedented numbers to begin the first quarter of
2013 and we fully intend to use the momentum for the
spring months.
The Community Services project continues to progress
and the staff is settling in. I trust you had a chance to
visit the facility at the end of March, but if you missed
the event, I encourage you to stop down for a brief
tour of the facility. As reported, the project is
progressing within schedule and we expect the final
details to be wrapped up around mid-April. Again,
thank you for your patience during the construction
process – especially the residents at Osprey!
There is a host of activities already in the queue for
the summer ahead. We intend to use our first
summer in quite a while without any major projects,
to improve at all levels operationally focused on
seamless and efficient service delivery and
identifying cost savings for the respective budgets
planning process. As in years past – our focus will
center around “expect to get better” at all levels!
Activity wise, the summer appears to be shaping up
nicely – we are seeing considerable interest in our
summer golf program and David Crandell and
Charlie Bowie are lining up another exciting
reciprocal program for all members to enjoy
beginning May 1 – more details will be forthcoming.
Congratulations to Kevin Hammer on winning his
second major event of the winter season as our “Club
Champion!” Congratulations, also, goes out to M.C.
Cloutier for winning our Ladies’ Club Championship
and Sally Jenkins for the 9 Hole Ladies’ Club
Championship.
Enjoy your club in April – there is a lot on the
calendar for everyone to enjoy!
BOARD DECISIONS
In an effort to keep the Community informed of the actions of the POA and Condominium Association
Boards, following are the motions/resolutions from the February 5, 2013 Board meetings.
Property Owners Association (POA):
A MOTION was made by Mr. Brennan and Seconded by Mr. O’Connor that the Quail Ridge Property
Owners Association approve a Sanderling Area material change for a landscape wall per the following
specifications and details. The ruling would apply to Sanderling only, due to the distinct architectural
style of that area.
1. Dimensions cannot exceed more than 59” from the carport/garage side of the unit and 73” from the end
of the home (bedroom/living area) and cannot be more than 48” high.
2. Painted to match local color scheme
3. Declaration of Approval of Alterations and Improvements to be recorded with Palm Beach County
4. Built to Palm Beach County Code.
After thorough discussion on this motion, Mr. Bonanata made a MOTION, Seconded by Mr. Agnello to
amend the proposal, to include the requirement that the Sanderling Board resubmit this proposal with
their endorsement. Amended proposal ADOPTED unanimously.
A MOTION was made by Mr. Figurelli and Seconded by Mr. Bourne that for owners with rental cars:
● A bar code will be issued for 30 days maximum. After 30 days, it will expire and need to be renewed.
● Prior to rental car being returned to the rental company, the member is required to stop at the South
Gate and request Security to remove the bar code. The Security Officer will verify the member’s
information and fill out a temporary bar code removal form.
● If the member fails to have this temporary bar code removed, the member will then be placed back on
the 7 day maximum renewable paper pass program for all future visits.
Motion ADOPTED unanimously.
Condominium Association:
A MOTION was made by Mr. Bonanata and Seconded by Mr. Agnello that the Condominium Association
Board approve the six new members from the January 24, 2013 posting. Motion ADOPTED
unanimously.
Shopping For A Cause
The Habitat ReStores, located in Delray Beach, provide our
affiliate with much needed funding to ensure that we are
successful in our mission to provide safe, decent and affordable
housing to families in need. These stores receive usable, donated
items such as building materials, furniture and household goods
from individuals and businesses. The items are then re-sold at
significantly discounted prices to the buying public. Not only are
the donated items tax deductible, but the resale of these items
keeps more waste out of local landfills. For your convenience, the ReStore offers home or
business pickup service by calling Habitat at 561-455-4441. Thank you for your consideration.
BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE SEASON …
I
t is time to start thinking about what plans need to be made before leaving Quail
Ridge. It is important to have someone check your unit regularly to make sure that
there are no leaks, the air conditioning is working and to make sure that your unit is secured. You
can contact Housekeeping at extension 3352 to make arrangements for this service. If you have
someone watching your unit, please notify security.
any program updates during the summer months, can be downloaded to the boxes.
Turn off the main water valves, and the valves to your water heater and under your sink and
toilet.
Make sure your bike is stored and tagged in your bike barn.
Contact the Post Office to have your mail forwarded.
Contact the Accounting Office to have your Quail Ridge mail forwarded to your northern
Discontinue your newspaper.
Have your phone forwarded.
Do not disconnect your phones if you have an alarm system.
Security Information Director of Security, Eric Price
April 2013
I
would like to start out by saying; it has been another great season here at Quail Ridge.
To our members heading north for the summer, please review the following information:
● There will be many auto transports and moving vans arriving in the weeks to come. Please
remember to instruct the drivers that they must enter the community via the North Gate on
Boynton Beach Blvd. Inform either gatehouse of their arrival dates. It is also imperative that
when hiring a moving van to pickup furniture or boxes, please consider the area in
which you reside. Some of the larger trucks and trailers are unable to drive into the
subdivisions without causing considerable property damage.
● While we generally enforce the community’s rule that limits commercial traffic between the hours
8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, we will, with Advanced Notice, waive that
restriction due to the unpredictable schedules of these out-of-state vendors.
● Members that maintain alarm systems in their homes should NOT have their telephone lines
disconnected. If you disconnect your telephones and an emergency at your home arises, the Security
Department as well as the Central Dispatch Center would fail to receive the alarm signal, since all
alarms are transmitted over the telephone lines.
● I would like to remind everyone to be especially thorough this summer when hiring vendors,
contractors, domestic help, etc. Be sure that they are properly licensed, insured, and bonded.
Legitimate companies will have no problem providing such information, and anyone who seems
reluctant or cannot provide documentation should be considered suspect. Once a contractor begins
work, we recommend that access to your homes be controlled as strictly as possible. Do not give
keys to anyone. When the vendor is placed on your guest list, simply let us know that they will
require a key, and then tell the vendor to sign out the key each day at the South Gatehouse. This
will allow us to track their activities.
● Use of Residence - In your absence, please plan ahead when having guests that will be staying at
your residence. A Use of Residence form must be completed and forwarded by fax to (561) 364-
0238 well in advance of your guest’s arrival. Use of residence forms, are limited to four applications
with club privileges annually. Each application is limited to two weeks. This keeps Security well
informed of who is coming and going, so that they can keep a watchful eye on the community.
● Notify the Security Department of your approximate departure and return dates by contacting Liz
Greene at 737-5100, ext. 3373. The more information you provide, the better we can respond to any
situation that may involve your home.
We would just like to remind everyone that in an effort to keep our roads safe, we continue to monitor our
roads with the unmanned video assistance of the Traffic Hawk.
Please remember that we have an obligation to keep our members and guests safe. We must provide safe
roadways to all that travel within our Community.
Enjoy the summer and above all, please stay safe!
Realty Update
by Ann Jara, Real Estate Director
T
he number one question I am
asked currently? “So, is anything
selling?”
The answer: A resounding, YES, absolutely!
Quail Ridge has had 32 sales since January 1,
(2 custom homes, 9 villas, 8 Garden 3 bedroom, 7
Garden 2 bedroom, 4 Terrace 2 bedroom and 2
townhomes). This is more than DOUBLE the sales as
the same time period last year when we had 14 sales.
The membership incentive program has generated a
lot of interest from buyers and we expect that to
continue along with the great property values
available.
Big Savings Available on Initiation Fees for a
Very Limited Time! The first and second levels
of savings are sold out, and several on the last
level are sold, so the time is now for prospective
members to act and lock in the best savings.
Buyers can save $10,000 on a golf membership
or $5,000 on a social membership.
April is the time when so many of you head “up
north,” so I wish you well in your summer travels.
Think of us often, and please tell your Northern
friends and neighbors what a fabulous, WARM winter
you just had. Would you consider hosting a cocktail
party (at our expense) for prospective members at
your northern club? The club’s and community’s
future success is dependent on having a vibrant,
dynamic membership, so adding new members
continues to be an imperative initiative. These
market visits are a fun, social and very effective way
for us to introduce Quail Ridge to your northern
friends and club members. Please call me or any real
estate committee member for details.
Real Estate Committee
"Jumpin Gee Willikers"! T'is April and all the
"snowbirds" are exercising their wings as they
prepare for the flight home! Between preparation of
Tax Returns (UGH) there is time to get in a few more
rounds of golf and games of tennis on our great
playing fields.
If you have not already done so, now is a very good
time to contact Ann Jara, or anyone on her team, and
get some materials to show your good friends back
home what a great place Quail Ridge Country Club is.
Convince them that they should try a "Stay and Play"
package to get to know our little piece of heaven.
I would expect by now you have received your "coffee
table" edition of "Q" magazine which was mailed
directly to you last month. I have received great
reviews and comments about the publication, and I
hope you all are enjoying it. If you have any
particular comments or ideas for future issues, please
email Ann Jara at the Quail Ridge Real Estate office,
AJara@quailridgecc.com.
Any of you looking for additional accommodations to
house family or friends, should take a look at
purchasing a rental property at Kittiwake … some
super deals can be arranged! We, also, have a great
variety of properties to suit everyone's tastes …
Check out the website for available properties or,
again, contact our Real Estate office for a complete
listing.
I guess all good things must come to an end but am
going to see one of my last great polo matches of the
season … you have to love those magnificent horses! I
wonder if I could convince our new Board to let us
keep a couple of horses on site! Hey, free fertilizer, eh!
Bill McEwen
As always, we invite you to call us at any time to
discuss our services. We are here to assist you in
making a smooth transition, whether moving in …
out … or just across the street in Quail Ridge.
Club Manager’s Report
by David Crandell
F
irst of all,, I would like to
thank you for a great winter
season. You have been supportive,
engaged and positive through our busiest months
and for that we are grateful.
I would, also, like to take the opportunity to thank
my team of managers who continue to work hard to
provide the membership with a Club they can be
proud of. Chef, Adam, Big Dave and Kara as well as
Lyn Robinson and Sally Maple at the front desk,
have done everything in their power to try to exceed
your expectations at every turn. We hope you
enjoyed it.
A big “thank you” goes to Catherine McLoud for her
commitment to Quail Ridge as House Committee
Chairperson this past season. Mrs. McLoud has
been wonderful to work with, employing her many
years of professional hotel management experience
We are committed to constant improvement at all
levels and believe me, we have many opportunities
to get better. I see them every day. We will take the
summer to carefully plan the 2013-2014 season,
seeking to give you a better experience than the
previous year. I would like to ask your help in
suggesting new ideas and concepts that you have
seen at your northern clubs, or any place that you
have ventured in your travels that you would like
to see here at Quail. Again, people are our best
resource, as it is the people that make Quail Ridge
such a special place.
Please travel safely when leaving for the summer.
Caridad Center Needs
As you are preparing to leave Quail Ridge for the
summer, you might find that you have some
canvas bags that you are not using. These can be
donated to the Caridad Center. Also, if you see
any children’s sweatshirts on sale at this time of
year, you might consider purchasing a few for
the children at the Center.
There will be a box in the Ladies’ Locker Room
for collecting these items.
Thank you,
Audubon News
by John Bloom, Chairman
On behalf of the Audubon Committee, I would like
to thank the Garden Club for their most generous
gift to fund the Butterfly Garden which was
recently planted behind the Pergola.
These plants and flowers are ideally suited to
attract various species of native butterflies to this
area.
Michelene Lauzon (L) and Diane Gibson (R) with
their prizes won in the Waxwing Challenge
We also plan to install a bird feeder and a bird bath
to this area. This will add a second dimension to
attract both butterflies and song birds to this newly
established habitat. for the enjoyment of Quail
Ridge members.
I would like to extent my appreciation to Fred
Briese, Chairman of the Landscape Committee,
for his assistance in establishing this habitat.
The Pergola is located on Quail Ridge Drive,
opposite the entrance to Kittiwake.
In the end, our society will be defined not
only by what we created, but what we
refused to destroy.
Audubon Committee Bird of the Month
American Kestrel
I recently saw an American Kestrel perched atop the Purple Martin house at the
tee on #10 North.
The Martins were not in danger as this small falcon (9-12 inches) feeds primarily
on rodents and insects.
The bird is common to the entire US, Canada and Central America.
Please be aware that a large framed photograph, of the "Bird of the Month" is on view in the hallway of the
Clubhouse. Also, this month, "Covey of Quail" was hung opposite the featured bird.
nd the beat goes on...
A Whether it’s dancing your socks off
or strengthening your heart, this season
the Fitness Center has been all about keeping the
beat. In March we hosted our first Dinner Dance. It
was so much fun seeing all of our dancers’ hard work
pay off. Our Zumba girls, line, tap and ballroom
dancers showed us a taste of what they enjoyed
learning this season. Who knew we had so much
talent at Quail Ridge? After the short presentation
the rest of us tried to shake our groove thing with the
dancers … a good time was had by all! If you missed
the fun, do not worry, we plan to make this an annual
event.
Its not too late, come and try one of our many dance
classes. Our hours of operation and class schedule
will continue normally through the month of April.
Keeping your heart healthy is always our goal,
Thursday, April 11, we are offering a two hour CPR
class. Although this class is not a full certification, it
will give you the needed information and confidence
to react in an emergency situation. We will spend two
hours reviewing and practicing basic CPR and
Heimlich maneuver skills for adults and children.
ow that we have "Sprung Forward" with
Daylight Savings Time, we look to begin the
busy time in our Inspection program. You should
have received your updated 2013 Inspection
Contract. If you have not, we will gladly personally
deliver one to your home.
If you need any assistance with our home inspection
program in filing out any paperwork or would like
to have anything clarified, one of our inspection
team members will gladly speak with you at your
home here at Quail Ridge. Our Home Inspection
program is a great way to have very positive
feedback on your home while you are away. Our
inspection team seals off all drains, toilets and any
additional plumbing. Your home is checked weekly
to ensure that it is still secure from weather, insects
or any mechanical issues that may arise.
Our housekeepers are prepared to assist in closing
your homes after your final departure. The
housekeepers will do general cleaning, as well as
check the little things that may be missed. They
will check the washer/dryer to ensure they are
empty and dry, discard perishable items from the
refrigerator, turn off the ice maker and confirm
your home is secure by checking locks on windows.
After they finish, they will close all blinds. They
will, also, bring into your home or garage area any
patio furniture that has been left outside. Upon
their departure, they will turn off your main water
supply and secure your home.
A gentle reminder that you must reapply for the
emergency shutter closing/opening list yearly.
If you have not already coordinated this with the
General Maintenance team, please contact them at
extension 3380.
Golf Update
Straight Down the Middle
by Charlie Bowie, Director of Golf
ow! What a busy March. Hard to
W believe the Club Championships
and Easter, both are now behind us. March was a
blur … a lot of action, right here at Quail Ridge. I
hope you had a chance to be a part of some of the
activities and events.
We are now looking forward to our Men’s and Ladies’
Golf Association closing day events, in the first week
of April. Yes, hard to believe, but I did say closing
day. Also, taking place in the same week will be the
Ladies’ Palm Beach Challenge Cup followed by
Canada Day, on April 5.
On April 16-18, Quail Ridge will play host to the
Florida State Golf Association Senior Amateur
Championship, one of the most prestigious amateur
golf events hosted by the State of Florida. The
practice round is scheduled for Monday and the
Championship will take place Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday on the North Course. Only the South
Course will be available for member play, so make
your plans accordingly. We encourage you to come out
and watch the event.
I would like to thank those members of the Golf
Committee, who are completing their committee
duties at the completion of the season. Thanks to
Patty Chick, Robin Skogman, Catherine McLoud,
David Azoulay, Tony Orlando and Doug Goldsmith.
All of you have provided exceptional leadership and
have played such an important role in helping with
the direction of the golf program at Quail Ridge.
We have had a very busy season with both
tournament and individual golf rounds up this year.
We continue to need your help and cooperation, once
on the course, to make sure your play is in keeping
with the spirit of golf. Play “Ready Golf,” keeping up
with the group ahead of you. Keep in mind, we are set
up to play a round of golf in about four hours. Please,
with our rounds of golf up, keep in mind those behind
you.
Well, that’s about all for now. Remember to:
Congratulations to the winners of the Club Championship, especially overall winner, M.C. Cloutier and to
all those who came out to play. Congratulations, also, to the top ten shootout participants. Great Job Ladies!
What a great season we’ve had celebrating community, camaraderie, competition and contribution. We’ve
enjoyed two Member/Guests, a great Member/Member tournament, an exciting Presidents Cup, the first
Canada/USA Challenge and an outstanding turnout for Rally For The Cure.
Thanks to all those who made these events so memorable, especially golf professional extraordinaire, Pam
Brosnihan. Accolades to outgoing president, Catherine McLoud, whose dedication, efficiency, talent and
humor guided us this year. Thanks, to first vice-president, Marie-Josee St.Jacques; second vice-president,
Patty Sue Grove; secretary, Melinda Breslin; awards chair, Mary Sullivan; and to those whose terms
end this year, treasurer, Judy Carlson and social chair, Jacelyn Pritchard. I want to add my thanks, as
publicity chair, for having the opportunity to work with such a fine group of talented women these past two
years.
Don’t miss our Closing Luncheon on April 2, the final event of the season.
Be sure and check out pictures of all our events and tournament winners on the photo viewer, in the ladies’
Canada/USA Challenge
Team Captains
Canada: Marie-Josee St. Jacques
and Jan McGarry
USA: Eileen Watson
This wonderful event began Tuesday evening (5 March) with wine,
hors d’oeuvres, laughter and hugs as Pam Brosnihan and Jan McGarry
drew partners and opponents. Pam worked tirelessly to assure the success
of this event. On Thursday, March 7, 48 golfers from each country competed
in Match Play. The Canadian team won the Match 14.5-9.5. M.J. St.
Jacques (Canadian Captain) stated, “The real winner is Quail Ridge, as we
strengthened relations, understanding and camaraderie with the women in
our community. After the match, all players adjourned to the Lounge for
libations and appetizers, announcement of the winner, and a wonderful
dinner. MJ entertained us by singing “God Bless America” and “Oh
Canada.” The amusement and merriment continued throughout the
evening with good natured teasing. Eileen Watson, the USA Captain quoted
Yogi Berra and said, “Wait till next year!” See you then.
