Awards<br />
Freddy Cachazo accepts the <strong>2009</strong> Gribov Medal of the European Physical Society.<br />
The <strong>Institute</strong>’s researchers are recipients of many awards and<br />
honours. Highlights from the last year appear below:<br />
• Faculty member Freddy Cachazo was awarded the Gribov Medal from<br />
the European Physical Society (EPS) “for his research with others<br />
that led to significant simplifications in the calculation of scattering<br />
amplitudes in both gauge theories and gravity ones.”<br />
• Associate Faculty members Raymond Laflamme and Cliff Burgess<br />
were inducted as Fellows of the Royal Society, the highest scholarly<br />
accolade awarded in Canada.<br />
• Faculty member Jaume Gomis received a <strong>2009</strong> Early Researcher<br />
Award from the Ministry of Research and Innovation of Ontario.<br />
• Faculty member Lee Smolin was awarded the <strong>2009</strong> Klopsteg Memorial<br />
Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) for<br />
“extraordinary accomplishments in communicating the excitement of<br />
contemporary physics to the general public.”<br />
• Work by Robert Spekkens et al. was selected for inclusion in the<br />
New Journal of Physics’ “Best of 2008” issue.<br />
• Faculty member Fotini Markopoulou won a prize from the Foundational<br />
Questions <strong>Institute</strong> (FQXi) for her essay “Space does not exist,<br />
so time can.”<br />
• Chris Fuchs was elected Chair of the American Physical Society’s<br />
Topical Group on Quantum Information (to begin 2011).<br />
• Postdoctoral fellow Sarah Croke won the 2008 QEP group thesis prize<br />
from the <strong>Institute</strong> of Physics (UK).<br />
