APARTMENT AMENITIESVISITOR HOUSING<strong>Perimeter</strong> maintains a number of apartments for visitors’ use. Most apartments are within walking distance to <strong>Perimeter</strong>.During your stay, we ask that you practice responsible use of the amenities and notify Facilities at help@perimeterinsitute.ca ofany apartment issues that might arise.TELEPHONEEach unit has a telephone for your use. If you are planning on making long distance phone calls, please see Visitor Services orSecurity to purchase a $5 long distance calling card. To hook up your computer connect the Ethernet cord to yourcomputer’s Ethernet jack and ensure that you have your computer confi gured to use DHCP (default behavior). There is no need fora password. Please feel free to use any of the spices, cooking oils, etc. in theapartments. If it is a shared apartment and there is someone staying with you, please check with them fi rst to see if anything is theirown personal item(s).Please note that most stores are open seven days a week, including a Valu-Mart grocery store located across from <strong>Perimeter</strong> inWaterloo Town Square (corner of Erb and Caroline).5


APARTMENT AMENITIESSAFESSafes are located in each of the bedroom closets (excluding Father David Bauer). Please ensure you lock up your valuables andcurrency when leaving the apartments. The instructions for use are inside the safe. If you have any diffi culties, please contact help@perimeterinstitute.ca.To use the safes:1. Press the red button on the back of the door near the hinge, release it and you will hear 2 beeps. The yellow light will be on atthe same time.2. Now enter 3-8 numbers that you wish to use as a combination, and confi rm by pressing the letter “B” within 15 seconds, oryou will have to do it from the beginning.3. Write down your new combination immediately and check whether your new combination has been programmed or not onconditions of the safe door opening. Note: If the red light is on it means the batteries are low. Please don’t use the safe andemail facilities at: help@perimeterinstitute.caMISCELLANEOUS ITEMSIncluded in the apartments are cooking utensils, dishes and glassware, a coffee pot and pots and pans. There is also an iron, hairdryer, and alarm clock. In the bathrooms, we have provided a few essentials in case you have forgotten to pack something, includingtoothpaste, shampoo, etc.MAINTENANCE & REPAIRSFor any ‘emergency repairs’, please contact your building superintendent (see contact info in your apartment details below). Anexample of an emergency repair is: no heat or electricity, toilet overfl owing, etc. For all other issues please contact facilities at: help@perimeterinstitute.ca which will be responded to during regular offi ce hours (Mon. - Fri. 8:30 am-5 pm).Please note: For apartments with no built in air-conditioning (A/C) units, portable A/C units are installed in the apartments by facilitiesduring the summer months. Alternately, apartments are equipped with portable fans all year long.While all units have access to laundry facilities, alternate laundry services are available nearby at Campus Coin Laundry and DryCleaning (150 University Ave. W., Waterloo, 519-886-1759). You can bring in your laundry and staff will wash and fold it for a fee.875 UNIVERSITY AVEAllowing Visitors into the BuildingThis is a self-contained condo with no buzzer code required. Visitors simply ring the doorbell.Garbage and RecyclingGarbage and recycling bins are located in the garage and are to be placed out in the front of the building for scheduled pick up.HeatingThe digital thermostat located in the main entrance and is fully adjustable for both the heating and air-conditioning.Laundry FacilitiesLaundry facilities are located in your apartment.ParkingThis apartment has a private driveway and garage for your use.6

There is a box with the name Ecologic on it. Turn the white knob from 0-5 (5 being the hottest). The rooms arealso heated with in-fl oor heating. Individual rooms can be adjusted (the knobs are labeled). Turn the knobs to the right to turn off,and vertically to turn on. Contact the superintendent if you require help.Laundry FacilitiesLaundry facilities are located in your apartment.ParkingYou may park on the street beside or behind the building.9


LOCATION31 Caroline Street North<strong>Perimeter</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s main building is a four-story facility located at 31 Caroline Street North, Waterloo. The fi rst fl oor is dedicated tocommon areas such as the Bistro, fi tness areas, library, and lecture theatre. The Visitor Program offi ce is found here as well. Thesecond fl oor houses administrative offi ces on the south side, and research offi ces on the north side. The third fl oor is similar, withthe addition of a seminar room, boardroom and kitchen on the south side. The fourth fl oor is dedicated to research offi ces and otherseminar rooms.ParkingParking is available at 31 Caroline Street North. You must have a current parking permit to park in the <strong>Perimeter</strong> lot. Permits shouldbe displayed on your rear-view mirrors. Please see reception or security if you require a parking permit. There is also free two-hourparking in the designated spots at the Museum Lot across the railway tracks. FACILITIES AT 31 CAROLINE ST.KITCHEN FACILITIESFull kitchen facilities are provided on the south side of the third fl oor. Fridges are provided for your use and store milk and creamfor coffee. A soft drink machine, pool table, table tennis (ping pong), and seating are all ready to make your day more comfortable.THE BLACK HOLE BISTROThe Bistro is open on weekdays for breakfast in the mornings starting at 8:00 am, and lunch from 12-2 pm. Dinner service is typicallyavailable from 5-8 pm (except Fridays). Pub Night is hosted on most Thursday evenings and Friday Social takes place from 3:45-5 pm.The Bistro is open to <strong>Perimeter</strong> residents and their guests. Members of the general public are occasionally permitted to enjoy the fi nefood and atmosphere in conjunction with ticketed events.There are magazines located at the Bistro bar and newspapers at reception available for your perusal. Please return the magazinesand newspapers after you use them.COLLABORATION SPACESComfortable seating, wood-burning fi re places, and blackboards make the collaboration spaces scattered throughout the buildinga meeting place for discussion and debate. Please make yourself at home, being mindful that others will appreciate you tidying thespace after you leave.FIREPLACESThere are wood-burning fi replaces throughout the building. The fi replaces are a wonderful and safe feature of the <strong>Institute</strong>, but dorequire monitoring when in use. Please do not place any items, even paper, inside the fi replaces. Fires will be started by buildingmaintenance; please contact Reception or Security at ext. 7777 should you wish to use a fi replace.12


FITNESS ROOMOn the fi rst fl oor, on the north side of the building behind the Refl ecting Lounge, you will fi nd an exercise room, squash court,basketball hoop and change rooms complete with saunas. For your own safety, before accessing these rooms, you will need a brieftraining session, which can be found online at: http://my.pi.local/ under Recreation.Important note: This facility is not supervised. Use of the equipment is the responsibility of the guest.Children under the age of 16 are not permitted to use the fi tness equipment.CHANGE ROOMS & LOCKERSThere are change rooms and lockers located beside the squash court for day use only. Please ensure that when you are done usingthe change rooms that you take all your personal belongings with you. If you require a locker for storage of your fi tness clothes,please see Reception or Security for a locker key.SMOKINGRegional by-laws prohibit smoking inside <strong>Perimeter</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, as well as inside all public places in the Region of Waterloo. Smokingis permitted outside the building and ashtrays in the form of large grey pylons have been provided.Important note: Smoking is not permitted in any of <strong>Perimeter</strong>’s apartments.MUSIC PRACTICE ROOMThere is currently a piano for your use in the Green Room. To use the piano you will have to see Security at the front desk.Important note: During special events, the Green Room Piano will not be available for use.UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO LIBRARYLonger term visitors and <strong>Perimeter</strong> residents have access (book loans and e-journals) to the University of Waterloo (UW) librarysystem. You must activate your access by registering at the UW Davis Library. The University of Waterloo is within walking distancethrough Waterloo Park. Note: For more information about obtaining a WatCard, please see the <strong>Perimeter</strong> Librarian.To access the University of Waterloo library remotely, please visit: http://login.proxy.lib.uwaterloo.ca/login. You’ll need to supplyyour last name and the barcode number from the front of your UW library card.13


GEORGE LEIBBRANDT LIBRARYA variety of books, electronic journals, and leisure magazines can be found in the library at 31 Caroline Street North.The main collections are housed on the fi rst fl oor; the second fl oor is assigned as offi ce space.The collection is arranged using the Library of Congress classifi cation system, an alpha-numeric identifi er. Most of <strong>Perimeter</strong>’s books are:Q (general science), QA (mathematics), QB (astronomy & cosmology), and QC (physics), although some other categories arerepresented.Some of our services• 24/7 access. The Librarian’s offi ce hours are M-F 8:30 am-4:30 pm. Off-hours you will need your access card to enter.• Web-ready computers are located on the East wall of the Library.• A self-checkout system is located near the entrance; follow the posted instructions.• The online catalogue and e-journals are available on your desktop through PI-Net at https://intra.pi.local, using your networkusername and password. There is also a stand-alone PC in the library which hosts the catalogue.• Courtesy notices, Notifi cation of availability of requested materials, Overdue accounts, Recalled items, Reminders to returnbooks before departure.• Other traditional services: inter-library loans, copyright information, intranet pages (links to ArXiv, UW e-resources, IOPScienceextra database, other catalogues, etc.).Quiet environment: The library encourages quiet conversation and collaboration to foster academic work. Please refrain from loudor disruptive conversations or other noisy behaviors. Conversation is not permitted in designated quiet study areas. Personal audiodevices with earphones are permitted provided volumes are kept low. No cell phones or Skype use are permitted in the library.Re-shelving: Do not reshelf library materials. Used materials should be left out on tables or in designated areas.Offsite access: Please talk to the IT helpdesk (help@perimeterinstitute.ca) and they will assist you to confi gure your computer forremote access to the <strong>Perimeter</strong> network.Food and beverages: These are allowed in all public spaces in the library, except at computer workstations. Please consume foodin a responsible manner and dispose of trash in the waste and recycling containers provided. Remember to bring your dirty dishesto the Bistro. Your <strong>Perimeter</strong> Access Card has been set up to function as a library cardwith the self-checkout station located near the fi rst fl oor entrance. Your loan period for books is 3 months, periodicals is 7 days.1. You must return any item that is RECALLED as soon as possible, no longer than 24 hours.2. All items must be returned if you are travelling 7 or more days.3. YOUR OFFICEOffice SuppliesThe supply cabinet is located on the second fl oor in the administrative side of the building, underneath the staircase across fromRoom 211. You are welcome to help yourself to any necessary supplies. If you are unable to fi nd what you are looking for, pleasesubmit your request to help@perimeterinstitute.ca for assistance in obtaining/ordering the supplies you need.Office Cleaning & MaintenanceAll offi ces are scheduled for cleaning by the <strong>Perimeter</strong> cleaning staff on a regular basis. Exceptions to regular cleaning are the offi ceblackboards and dish removal. To have your blackboard thoroughly cleaned, please submit your request to help@perimeterinstitute.ca. For dirty dishes, we ask that you place them in one of the three designated coffee stations (Feynman lounge, 4th fl oor kitchenette,and Bistro) within the building for cleaning.Computers<strong>Perimeter</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> currently provides support for Linux, MS-Windows and Mac based computers. If you have any questions, pleasesubmit a help request to help@perimeterinstitute.ca or contact the help desk at ext. 8888.PrintersThere are printers located on each wing of levels two, three, and four. All of these printers are black and white units with duplexcapabilities.As well, there are two colour photocopiers which have higher quality printing capabilities located on the second fl oor of all three wings.Please contact the IT department at extension 8888 for assistance with setting up the necessary printer drivers.Photocopying<strong>Perimeter</strong> has two ColorQube 9201 machines. One is located across from Room 211 on the second fl oor, south wing, near thesupply cabinet; the second is located in room 270 in the East wing.This user-friendly machine has many copying capabilities including the ability to enlarge/reduce, duplex, and staple. A wide varietyof output media (including transparencies) can be used.ScanningThe ColorQube machines can also be used to scan documents to a number of formats (.tiff, .pdf) and will email the resulting documentto whomever you specify. If you are scanning transparencies, please scan them in the landscape orientation to prevent jamming.FaxingThe machines are capable of faxing documents. Currently, we have not implemented long distance codes for this service (weencourage you to use the scan to email functionality instead). Instructions are posted at these machines.Telephone UseEach offi ce is equipped with a telephone and extension number.The main switchboard line is 519.569.7600.Outgoing CallsDial 9 to access an outgoing telephone line.Local CallsDial 9 + 519 + phone number.Long Distance (Canada & US)Dial * + LD Code + 9 + 1 + area code + phone numberTo dial long distance you will require a long distance code.
