WHO ARE WE?
Welcome to Gracepoint – a church for people who have given up on church but haven't
given up on God. Or, to put it more simply, a church for people who don't like church.
Don't get us wrong – personally, we love church. We are the Church – the body of Christ.
But let's face it – sometimes "church," with all its religiosity, legalism and sheer irrelevance,
can leave people with a bad taste in their mouths. We want to change that by introducing
them to church as it was meant to be: Grace-filled. Authentic. Transforming. Externallyfocused.
These are our core values and what we work toward becoming every day
with the help of God and each other.
BILL HOGG
bill@gracepoint.ca
Ex. 208
I was born in Scotland and enjoyed a transatlantic
boyhood because of my Dad’s work. I have been a
construction worker, movie extra, talk show host,
evangelist and adjunct professor. I have picked up
Bachelors degrees in Industrial Engineering and
Theology, and a Masters in Evangelism Studies. I
hope to finish my doctorate in 2010. (So much
packed into such a young life!) I am navigating my
fourth culture and loving life in beautiful B.C.
It is a great joy to be part of Gracepoint and to lead
the staff team. I am excited about what God has in
store for us as we journey together with Jesus.
I am passionate about us becoming and being a
church for those who have given up on church and
connecting with those farthest from Christ. I want
to see those who are “found” experiencing Jesus in
the fullness of His grace, power and healing and
being equipped and released as agents of
transformation. I love preaching the gospel and
expounding the Scriptures.
I enjoy strong Starbucks coffee, movies, browsing
in bookstores, watching Manchester United,
barbecues and dabbling in the kitchen on vacation.
GET READY FOR A GREAT RIDE!
I must confess that I love
amusement parks. I also
confess that I am a Disney Freak
– I have had the privilege of
visiting both Disneyland in
California and Disneyworld in
the Sunshine State.
I just love the Magic Kingdom.
Maybe because it gives me a
chance to re-live my childhood.
Maybe it’s because of the
Electric Light Parade, the
fireworks and light displays at
night. Mostly, I think it’s
because of the cool rides. There
is the Tower of Terror where
you plunge thirteen stories;
there is the Aerosmith ride
where you are whisked into a
corkscrew rollercoaster while
rock music is pounded into your
ears; and Splash Mountain gives
you the opportunity to get
soaked in the company of Brer
Rabbit, Brer Bear and Brer Fox.
Space Mountain jettisons thrill
seekers into outer space in a
rocket shaped vehicle, reaching
a peak height of 180 feet and a
maximum speed of 28 miles per
hour (it seems so much faster in
the dark!).
Whatever the ride is, the Disney
staffer gives you safety
instructions. If you are one of
the space travellers ready to
travel the galaxy on Space
Mountain you will hear the
following as you wait in line:
"Welcome, space travelers.
Space Mountain is a thrilling,
high speed, turbulent rollercoaster
type ride in the dark
that includes sharp turns,
sudden drops & stops. Before
you embark on your
adventure, please place all
hats, glasses, and loose
possessions inside the
storage pouches located
directly in front of you. To
prepare for launch, pull the
lap bar toward you. You
are now ready for your
intergalactic adventure,
thank you and have a great
flight."
Once inside your rocket you
will be instructed:
"Space Shuttle, for your
safety, remain seated with
your hands, arms, feet, and
legs inside the rocket and
watch your children. You
are cleared for launch."
When I think about what God
has in store for Gracepoint, it
makes me want to echo the
Disney staff and shout out,
“fasten your seat belts, pull
the lap bar towards you and
keep your arms, hands, and
legs inside the vehicle at all
times.” We are most
definitely headed into a new
chapter in God’s story for
Gracepoint. Jesus has given us
our marching orders. Our
assignment from God is to:
“Mentor, multiply and move
people to follow Jesus Christ
for His mission.” As we heed
Jesus’ marching orders, that
means new things must be
brewing at Gracepoint .
First, there are new ministries
being launched at Gracepoint.
Jeremy Pue is our brand new
Pastor of College and Career
Ministries. Jeremy is
developing a ministry to
mentor, multiply and move
young adults to follow Jesus
Christ for his mission. As I
type this, the launch
(Continued on page 9)
(Continued from page 8)
gathering for Ascent Ministries has already taken
place at the Rodeo Wired Monk (that’s on Hwy 10
just off of 152 nd ). If you want to find out Jeremy’s
heart and vision you can contact him at
jeremy@gracepoint.ca and you can keep up to
speed on ministry amongst Gracepoint young
adults by checking out the ministry’s Facebook
page : http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/
pages/Ascent-Ministries/138422942845814?
ref=ts
Second, you will know by now that Gregg Baker
has come on board to bring interim leadership to
the Worship Arts ministries while Matt Unruh
enjoys the benefits of parental leave as he and
Cristina and the girls enjoy their new arrival, baby
Silas Murray Thomas Unruh. Gregg is our Creative
Programming Director and you can read what he’s
up to and enjoy his enthusiasm by checking out
his article in this edition of Connection Point. You
will also note that Gregg is Bell Campus Music
pastor. This is a small yet very significant step as
we make the intentional move to multi-site
ministry. This will give the Bell Campus consistent
leadership as we seek to cultivate cohesive
community through each Campus. In a similar
way, Jeremy Pue will be serving our Surrey South
Campus as Music pastor, in addition to providing
great leadership to our Young Adults Ministries.
Third, I am delighted to share the addition of
another new member to our ministry team, Phil
Wagler. Phil will be coming on board as Senior
Associate Pastor. I look forward with great
anticipation to Phil’s arrival. He will be joining our
staff in September and I would like to encourage
you to pray for Phil and his family as they prepare
to move across the country. Please pray that they
will be prepared for what God wants to do in
them and through them and pray too for logistical
plain sailing! Phil has described himself as, “Son
of two. Husband of one. Father of five. Student of
many. Servant to hundreds. Dear to a King.” Phil
is married to Jen and their children are Caleb
(who will be 13 in August), Benjamin (age 10),
Jessie (age 7), Sadie (age4) and Micah, who is
just 8 months old.
Phil has a passion for seeing the kingdom expand
and the next generation of leaders developed.
Phil’s role will be catalytic in Gracepoint becoming
a multiplying movement. For the past seven
years, he has served as Lead Pastor of Kingsfield
in Zurich, Ontario. His ministry involved leading
the church to become a multiplying movement in
rural south-western Ontario. Phil is the author of
Kingdom Culture: Growing The Missional Church.
He also writes regularly for both “Seven” – the
Promise Keepers Canada magazine, and he has a
regular column –“Out of the Box”- for Canadian
Mennonite magazine. Phil is a graduate of
Emmanuel Bible College in Kitchener, Ontario,
earned his Masters through Tyndale Seminary,
and is also a graduate of the Arrow Leadership
Program. Phil is an ambidextrous sports
aficionado claiming to love both the beautiful
game and hockey. I look forward to Phil joining
our staff team.
Finally, during these long balmy summer nights,
foundations are being put in place for a
transformational men’s ministry. I am meeting
weekly with a core team in preparation for an
October launch. Men’s ministry is strategic for
the health and vitality of the church. “We are
launching a men’s ministry that will have
discipleship, mentoring, transformation and
accountability in its DNA. We will be investing in
ways to mentor, multiply and move men to
follow Jesus Christ for His mission.” In most
churches, men are either absent or disengaged;
we want to be a glorious contradiction and invite,
encourage and challenge guys to live lives fully
devoted to Jesus.
I trust that your summer is restful and refreshing.
May God bless you richly and
make you a blessing to others.
Yours with warm Christian love,
Bill Hogg, Lead Pastor
Page 9

LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Some of you have asked who the
Leadership team members are,
what their role at Gracepoint is,
and how they are chosen. Gregg
Baker our long time member of
our church, but only recently
added to our full time staff has
taken on the responsibility of
editorial content and artistic
direction for the Connection Point.
He has challenged me to submit
articles from time to time in this
paper. Thus this article, and
thanks Gregg for your effort to
improve the Connection Point.
Let me begin by naming the
current members of the
Leadership Team at Gracepoint:
they are Ron Marshall, Cecil Rast,
Bryan Jakeman, Doug Stuart, Sam
Rowland, Lisa Carpenter, Bill Hogg,
and Ernie & Marie Isaac. Phil
Wagler, who has just been hired as
the Senior Associate Pastor of our
church will be added to this team
when he joins our staff in
September.
As I believe, most of you are aware
that our church is a staff led
church. What that means is that
the day to day operations of our
church are handled by the staff.
As a Leadership team we do not
feel that that this is an area that
we should be involved with or
interfere with. We believe the
staff at Gracepoint are gifted and
called to carry out the ministry
that is required of them.
However, we as a Leadership
Team are responsible for the
overall direction of our church—
including hiring the staff that will
lead us. In addition, as elders, we
need to be concerned for the
health of our church body, and the
expansion of God’s Kingdom
through our church. The Bible gives
some clear direction as to what
some of these qualities and
functions are. I will elaborate
some of these in a future article—
suffice it to say that passages like I
Peter 5:1-4 and I Timothy 3:1-7
give us some clarity on that.
How are individuals selected to be
on the Leadership Team? I do not
mean to be trite, but I would say,
‘prayerfully and carefully.’ First of
all, anyone who is selected to be
on the Leadership Team should
already be operating as an elder
(exemplary leader) in our church.
Our elder document states that
there should be 8 to 12 members
on our team. When we sense that
we need to add a new member we
try to discern who in our
congregation is already functioning
like an elder. Then we spend
considerable time praying about
who we should invite to join us.
After consensus is reached about a
certain individual, he or she is
approached and asked to pray
about this. Then they are asked to
attend an LT meeting at which time
it can be further confirmed
whether the chemistry between
that person and the rest of the
team is a good fit. Then after
further prayer and discussion, if it
is felt that this person would be the
right person to join the LT they
would be asked to be part
of this team.
Please pray for our elders,
and for those in the future
who should be added to
this team. We feel our
responsibility keenly. We
are but under shepherds of
the Great Shepherd, the
Lord Jesus Christ. We
want to lead as He would
lead. We are excited about
the future of Gracepoint
Community Church, and
believe God has great
things in store for all of us.
I trust you share that
optimism.
If you are interested in attending please RSVP to maxine@gracepoint.ca
Here at Gracepoint we love to meet new people all the time! We especially love it if those people have
questions about Gracepoint, questions about God and faith, questions about how to get connected,
questions about almost everything. Also, truth be told, we love any excuse to eat dessert! So, the
creative minds here thought why not put meeting new people at Gracepoint together with eating
dessert? Sounds like a great combo to us. If you are new here, or even if you have been attending for
awhile, please accept our warmest invitation to attend the next Newcomers’ Dessert .
On Sunday, July 18th, we announced that Phil Wagler will be joining the staff
team at Gracepoint as our Senior Associate Pastor.
Phil and his family hope to arrive here in BC (from Ontario) in time for their
kids to start school in the Fall.
Please pray for the Waglers as they make this transition and for the sale of
their house.
We think they may need to rent before buying anything here in the lower
mainland, so if you have a rental property or know of a possible home to rent
(for 5 kids and 2 parents) please let us know ASAP.
Gracepoint Worship Arts: Calling all Artists and Artisans
I am excited! I am very excited! I don’t know if it’s even
possible to begin to tell you how excited I am! Someone pinch me
right now so I know that this is not a dream. All I can say is, “God
is good!” He is currently recharging and igniting passions deep
within my soul that have been in an incubation stage for way too
long.
CREATIVE PROGRAMMING
DIRECTOR/MUSIC PASTOR
(BELL CAMPUS)
Gregg Baker
gregg@gracepoint.ca
Ex. 214
In case you haven’t heard, or perhaps you are new to
Gracepoint, our music pastor Matt Unruh is on what I like to call
“Matt leave” for the next nine months or so as he and Cristina and their girls spend time
welcoming baby Silas into their family. Congratulations to Matt and Cristina and the entire
Unruh family! In the interim, I have been called and have accepted the awesome privilege of
serving as your Creative Programming Director and Music Pastor at the Bell campus. Believe it
or not, this means that I have just resigned from a full-time job that I have held for twenty
years for what may be nothing more than an amazing nine-month contract followed by
unemployment. When I first spoke of this opportunity with my wife Tracy, the first thing she
said to me was, “you have to do this!” God has been faithful to us throughout our lives and we
firmly believe that He will continue to be so for all eternity, so we are stepping out of the box
in faith and we are excited to wait and see where all of this may lead!
Secondly, I am excited that Jeremy Pue has accepted the call to be Gracepoint’s
Young Adults’ Pastor and Music Pastor for the Surrey South Campus. At the time of
this writing, Jeremy has only been on staff for a couple of weeks and already he has launched a
brand new ministry called “Ascent” which will see young adults converging at the Wired Monk
Rodeo on a weekly basis for some hang time, some teaching, and some seriously good music. You
can check out Ascent Ministries on Facebook and Twitter and I would highly recommend and
encourage any college and early career types to meet Jeremy, come to the Wired Monk on a
regular basis, and invite some friends along for great evenings of conversation with
substance and depth. To everyone at the Surrey South Campus, I think you are going to love
having Jeremy as your Music Pastor in the Fall as we attempt to finalise music ministry’s drift
toward site specificity, which has been gradually taking shape over the last year or so.
Finally, I am uber excited to announce the launch of what we are calling the “Creative
Design Team” (or CDT) at Gracepoint. We held our first meeting of creative minds on July 19,
2010 at the home of our senior pastor and artist in residence, Bill Hogg. The CDT is made up of a
number of people from Gracepoint who have a serious love for various art forms combined with a
clear vision and passion for how the arts might be used to give fuller expression to our love
for God and our depth of gratitude for the gifts and talents that He has lavished on us. The
possibilities for the Creative Design Team are virtually limitless and that excites me!
To give you just a taste of what this team is all about and where you might play a role,
here is a brief summary of our first CDT meeting:
First, we spent a little time connecting and getting to know each other over munchies and
beverages (do you want to join us already?). Next, Bill and I spent some time vision casting
for the group. I began by sharing my feeling that for too long worship or “worship arts” has
been all about music—people often ask the question, “How was worship today?”—as if the word
“worship” were synonymous with “music.” I believe the definition of worship is so much broader
than that, even moving beyond the arts and postures of worship altogether, but that is another
article for another time. Anyway, next I shared my excitement about the big idea of bringing
GRACEPOINT WORSHIP ARTS
(Continued on page 14)
Page 13

(Continued from page 13)
more and more art forms under the umbrella of Gracepoint Worship Arts (GpWA) and the
possibilities of a creative marriage between the arts and the teaching of God’s Word. I
believe that the potential and purpose of the CDT is to give fuller expression to our love
for God and to provide more ways for the unchurched (people searching for God in
different ways) and de-churched (wounded saints) to (re)connect with God.
When it was Bill’s turn to share (we take turns at CDT meetings), he expressed his
desire to create multisensory experiences throughout our worship services. Bill
recalled an instance of preaching on Jeremiah, the “Potter’s House,” and how cool it would
have been to have an actual potter on stage with him creating shapes by moulding and
reworking the clay on a pottery wheel throughout the entire sermon. As Bill put it, “we
want to expand as we expound on the WORD—it could be aromatic, it could involve lighting,
we could have constructed sets.” Next, Bill talked about how we want to elevate the
importance of Story and that preachers need to be artists as well. As an example, Bill
reminded us of the story that Nathan told David in order to break through David’s defences
and get to the heart of the matter. As a team, we want to use all these elements to shake
things up a bit, to be surprising to the complacent, the cynical, and the unsuspecting.
Finally, Bill shared that the CDT holds out the promise to be a catalyst for the creation
of an artistic community within Gracepoint that will reach out to artists who are often
left on the sidelines in mainstream churches throughout North America.
Following our vision casting, we played a little game of trading cards that I like
to call, “Got ‘em, Got ‘em, Need ‘em, Want ‘em, Got ‘em.” As it stands, we have volunteer
leaders in place for: Music, Movement, Graphic Design, Drama and Spoken Word, as well as
Video Production. In the Need ‘em category, we would love to ‘prayerfully and carefully’
discern potential team leaders for: Set Design and Props, Fine Arts (including
painting, sculpting, installation art, and don’t forget pottery), Creative Writing
(including poetry, plays, and stories), and Creative Research and Excavation of
existing, historical art works to inform our contemporary dialogue and understandings.
As a sidebar, it should be noted that none of these categories are set in stone and there
may be many new categories added as God brings us more talented artists in areas that we
never could have asked or imagined. After all, God is creative and our creativity is but a
mere reflection of the Greatest Creator of all! Whoa, suddenly I had an image of a
chainsaw sculptor up on stage with Bill. I’d love to see how our creative sound techs would
deal with that one!
Anyway, if any of what I have written excites you in any way, please contact us with
your creative ideas (bill@gracepoint.ca or gregg@gracepoint.ca). During the month of
August you will probably see some ideas from the CDT begin to emerge into our weekend
services, but I’m not going to tell you what they are because I don’t want to spoil the
surprise. So, stay tuned and expect the unexpected! In the meantime, I’d like to close
with Eugene Peterson’s creative rendering of Romans 5@1-2:
By entering through faith into what God has always wanted to do for us—set us right with him, make us fit for him—we
have it all together with God because of our Master Jesus. And that's not all: We throw open our doors to God and discover
at the same moment that he has already thrown open his door to us. We find ourselves standing where we always hoped
we might stand—out in the wide open spaces of God's grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise!
We serve an awesome, creative God who wants to pour into us as we open our doors to Him, so
that each one of us might stand tall in the wide open spaces of God’s grace and glory and
shout His praise in a way that He has uniquely shaped us to do. I am excited. I am very
excited! I hope you are too.
In Jesus’ glorious name,
Calling all Tech Heads who like to
play with electronic toys
Pastor Randy in his element
Here at Gracepoint, we have a longstanding tradition of excellence in Audio, Video, Lighting, and
Multimedia presentation. Currently, we have a great small team of dedicated technicians led by our
Pastor of Technical Arts, Randy Plett, and we are looking forward to expanding this team to include
many more talented, technically gifted people out there who would deeply enjoy being a part of this
ministry. Randy and his crew are constantly called upon to make things happen at a moment’s notice
so that those who attend our weekend services and special events at Gracepoint would rarely suspect
that things are not going exactly as planned well in advance. Some might call it learning to fly by the
seat of your pants, others might call it crazy, and still others might be
excited and invigorated by just such an environment.
So, if you love to play with technical toys, if you feel that you are gifted
or just incredibly inspired to learn more about audio engineering,
recording, video production (shooting and editing), and/or photography,
then we would love to hear from you! We are always looking to add to
our team of creative, God honouring technicians.
PRACTICAL IDEAS FOR NURTURING CHILDREN’S FAITH
Help Kids Grow Their Friendships
This month's topic is friendship and social interaction. Friends are vital to children's emotional and social development. With a
new school year approaching, children will face reunions with old friends, introductions to new friends, and probably a few relationship
conflicts, as well. This month's newsletter offers ideas for helping children show love to one another and resolve any
problems that arise.
Highlights of this month's issue include:
Biblical advice about how we should treat and interact with one another.
Age-level insights about how friendships grow along with children.
Easy ways to reinforce the importance of friends and fairness.
Discussion questions that will get children talking about their own relationships.
Information and discussion questions about the new movie Nanny McPhee Returns and the new album from Christian singer
Natalie Grant.
With The Parent Link, you always get practical ideas for nurturing children's faith.
POWER SOURCE
ASK GOD
1. To help your children make
positive, lasting friendships.
2. To give your children the
confidence to speak up about
bullying.
3. To show your family members
how to befriend one another.
PARENTING INSIGHTS
These developmental tips from
Children’s Ministry Magazine show how
friendships grow along with children:
Ages 2 to 4
Young children depend on others to help
them develop social skills. Use praise to
reinforce good behavior, such as sharing.
Help children refine their negotiation
skills to resolve conflicts. Give them
ideas of what to say.
Ages 5 to 8
Kids this age are learning to choose their
friends. Their self-image is strongly
related to others’ opinions of them. To
help a bully, emphasize respect and
model how to handle conflict without
anger.
Ages 9 to 12
Parental authority diminishes, and kids
want to be with their friends more.
Discuss the qualities of a good friend and
the down side of cliques and gangs
HELP KIDS GROW THEIR FRIENDSHIPS
Friends are vital to children’s emotional and social development. Through
friendships, kids learn to share, set boundaries, make decisions, and respect
others. Having friends also makes children feel supported, which boosts their
self-esteem.
With a new school year right around the
corner, many children are thinking about
reuniting with classmates and friends.
But fears about bullies may also exist. No
child is immune to mistreatment by
peers. Here are some ways to help kids
develop love, respect, and kindness
toward one another while maintaining a
healthy sense of self:
Love each other. Help children make the connection between how Jesus loves
and cares for us and how he wants us to love and care for one another. Make
the Golden Rule a top priority in your home (“Do to others whatever you
would like them to do to you,” Matthew 7:12).
Agree to disagree. Children need to hear and learn that it’s okay to disagree
with others because God made us all different. But it’s never okay to hurt
someone with our words or actions.
Everyone’s important. Help children find the acceptance and recognition they
seek by focusing on activities and behavior standards that are positive, fun,
and rewarding. Guiding kids toward loving themselves is key to helping them
love other people.
WHEN SOCIAL INTERACTION GOES AWRY
A staggering 160,000 children miss school each day because they’re
afraid of attack, intimidation, or bullying.
(NEA)
33% of special-needs kids have been targets of bullying.
aboutourkids.org)
Children whose parents share ideas and talk often with them are 40%
less likely to bully other kids, compared to children of parents who don’t
do those things regularly.
(health.com)
56% of mothers say they’ve ended a friendship because they thought
someone’s child was a bad influence.
OPEN THE BOOK
“There is no greater love than to lay
down one’s life for one’s friends.
You are my friends if you do
what I command.” John 15:13-14
Jesus, our ultimate Friend, sacrificed
his life for us. We can follow his
example by showing love and devotion
to our friends and family members.
TEACHABLE MOMENTS
1. Stick With Love—Buy some stickers
that have messages about
friendship, and let children pass
them out to friends. Read 2 John 5-
6 and talk about what it means to
love our friends.
“So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to
these words of mine. Tie them to your hands
and wear them on your forehead as
reminders. Teach them to your children. Talk
about them when you are at home and when
you are ON THE ROAD, when you are going to
bed and when you are getting up.”
Deuteronomy 11:18-19, NLT
Learn more about children’s experiences with friendship
by asking these discussion starters:
What are the most important qualities in a friend, and why?
How good of a friend do you think you are? How might you be able to
be a better friend to someone?
How do you handle conflicts with your friends? What role does
forgiveness play in friendships?
When you’re being bullied or see someone else being bullied, what’s
the best way to handle the situation?
FAMILY EXPERIENCE: Friends First
Discover the meaning of true friendship with these activities from
Group’s Hands-On Bible:
• After You—Challenge family members to put other people first for
a whole day. Say: “See what it’s like to open doors for others, let
everyone go in front of you in line, let others be served first, let
others choose what to watch or play, and so on.”
2. Everyone’s Invited—When children
feel left out or are excluded from a
party, talk about how life isn’t
always fair or equal. Read Luke
14:7-14 together and discuss ways
to include people and not
discriminate.
3. Time to Reflect—Let babies and
toddlers see themselves and their
playmates in mirrors. Say names
aloud as children see the reflections
so they can begin to attach names
to other people.
4. Keep in Touch—During summer,
help children send postcards to
their friends. Even if postcards
aren’t from a trip, correspondence
will teach kids about nurturing their
special relationships.
At the end of the day, give each family member a piece of paper
and a pencil. Say: “Draw a giant number one. Inside it, write what it
was like to be last at things.” Read aloud Mark 9:35b. Ask: “What
happens when we put others first? Why do you think Jesus wants
us to act that way?” Say: “Living like this may have felt a little
weird, but that’s what Jesus did for us!” Pray together, and have
each person pray for someone else in the family.
• Tied Together—As a family, make
friendship bracelets.
(Easy instructions are available on the
Internet.) During the craft time, talk
about your friends and what you would
or wouldn’t do for them. Read Ruth 1:16
and discuss the friendship between
Naomi and Ruth, her daughter-in-law. Ask: “How do you think Naomi
felt about Ruth’s loyalty? How can we be loyal to our friends and each
other?”
Say: “Knots can remind us of bonds that can’t be broken, like the bond
between Ruth and Naomi. Give away your bracelet to thank a friend
for always being there for you.” Hang an extra bracelet on a doorknob
at home as a reminder that family members are good friends, too.
METAMORPHOSIS
Metamorphosis: it’s a really big word, but your kids know what it means. At some point
during grade school, they will trek across the playground in hot pursuit of a very hungry
caterpillar, they will capture the unsuspecting bug, and they will keep it in a tank, eagerly
feeding it a staple diet of leaves and fruit. They will anxiously watch the caterpillar cocoon
itself, and then they will wait. No matter how many wiggles are inside of a child, he or she
will sit perfectly still when the cocoon moves for the first time, hoping to see a colorful
butterfly spring forth. They know that metamorphosis means change!
What your kids don’t know is that metamorphosis comes from the Greek words “meta,”
meaning “change,” and “morphe,” or “form.”
Metamorphosis is a total and complete change in
shape; caterpillars could not be more different from
butterflies if they tried! Early Christians embraced
the metaphor of a butterfly undergoing
metamorphosis to communicate the changes made
when we accept Christ into our lives. 2 Corinthians
5:17 tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a
new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”
We become new creations in Christ – the caterpillar is
gone and we can soar with colorful wings! In his
book, Soul Cravings, Erwin McManus says this about
metamorphosis:
[It] describes a change that literally moves us from crawling to flying. It is a necessary
change if we are going to journey to the future we were created to live, to experience,
to enjoy… Once you have lift, once you have takeoff, it just might hit you – on its worst
day, a butterfly flies better than a caterpillar on its best day.
I love serving as Bell Campus Small Group Coordinator in Kids Unlimited because I get to
witness metamorphosis every week. As Christ is at work in the lives of your children, I see
the changes. I see the bursts of new life as your kids begin to test their wings and break
through their cocoons. Some kids grow into their wings very quickly; from a young age,
they know who they are and who God wants them to be. Others timidly try their wings,
taking their time to find their feet. And a few linger in their cocoons, fearful or
apprehensive about venturing forth. My team and I have the privilege of walking with your
kids on their faith journeys, at every stage of their metamorphosis. The best part of my
week is when I see your kids make the decision to stop crawling; to embrace all God has for
them, and to spread their wings. It is a joy, an encouragement, and a privilege to witness!
Wonderfaire 2010: Tales from the High Seas
By Admiral Tracy Baker (Wonderfaire Director)
Greetings fellow travellers! Well, Wonderfaire 2010 is done for the
year! I say that with mixed emotions because even though I’m glad to
have some summer rest with my family and to return to my regular
schedule of work and being a mom to 3 children and a wife to a
wonderful husband who has supported me throughout this entire
process, I am sad that the week has gone by so fast and I already miss
being with the kids and volunteers who came to Wonderfaire every day—it’s kind of like going
through a mega people withdrawal.
This was my fourth year directing Wonderfaire and I have to admit it had its
share of stormy seas, but those rough moments were well made up for by many joy
-filled rewarding moments. God is faithful and He carried me through the entire
process, even when I was exhausted before our busy week started! God constantly
put people in my path to cheer me on and remind me of why I am doing this. I
wouldn’t say that I am one who has many clear visions from God; but one that
comes to me every year that I’ve directed Wonderfaire is that of a puzzle that is
being put together. In January, I lay out all the pieces and then one by one they all come together,
with God’s hand in all of it! I always know that God is with me in all of the planning that happens
and that He provides me with a team of WONDERful Area Leaders and
volunteers that pour so much of their time, love and energy into making this
the best week of summer!
Also, in case you haven’t heard, Wonderfaire just celebrated its 20th year
anniversary!! Isn’t that amazing? I just get so excited thinking about all the
changed lives and the seeds that were planted in all those kids that came
throughout the years! And there are always so many stories that I get to hear
about transformed lives during Wonderfaire, not only does this happen in a
child’s life but also within some of the volunteers’ lives as well! God is so good!
Well, we had a fabulous week with about 225 kids showing up (thanks to the Gracepoint kids and
families for being invitational and inviting friends to come to Wonderfaire) and we also had over
150 volunteers helping out, some were on site during the week and many worked behind the scenes
WONDERFAIRE 2010

We had such beautiful weather and there were happy faces, lots of
laughter, a lot of water games, awesome crafts, yummy snacks,
inspiring music, wonderful bible teaching moments and overall a really
fun filled week for the kids and the volunteers!
Many Group Leaders come back every year, and some have been volunteering way longer than I
have been directing. Now that’s what I call committed volunteers, don’t
you think? I had a couple of volunteers at the end of the week who
wanted to sign up again already for next year and I also had a couple of
new volunteers tell me how easy they thought it was to lead a group of
kids. One volunteer even said to me: “it was so easy, I’m spreading the
word around for next year that all you need to do is to Love children
and Love Jesus” It really is that easy! So if your heart is stirring as you
read this (and I’m praying that it is), please don’t hesitate to volunteer
next year, there are so many opportunities to get involved. Volunteering
for Wonderfaire really is a joyful and rewarding experience! And A TON of fun too!!
There are so many people to thank and I would love to list each one of them, but I would need a
lot more room than this. So, if you were involved in Wonderfaire in any way, please know that I
am so grateful to you and I appreciate all that you have done to share God’s love to the children
in our surrounding community who came to hear the Good News of Jesus. Without your servant
heart, Wonderfaire just wouldn’t be the same!
Thank you for bringing Glory to God through Wonderfaire!
In His Love,
We think student ministry should be fun, engaging, encouraging and uplifting.
But more than that, we believe when teens get to hang out with leaders who take
time to listen and build solid friendship around the truth of Jesus, they gain purpose,
hope and begin to thrive in life. At Gracepoint you get the best of both worlds –
fun, engaging programs and staff and volunteer leaders who are committed to
encouraging students to pursue a personal, passionate and real relationship with Jesus Christ.
SOAR MONTREAL
MONDAY, JULY 26th, 2010
God speaking
A team of 14 youth led by our Youth Pastor, Kevin Snyder,
are currently on a missions trip into the heart of Montreal.
What follows is an excerpt from their blog:
Today we had the great privlege of visiting our host church for the week, Centre Chretien
Metropolitian ( www.egliseccm.org ). We attended the service (that they translated for us) and one of
the pastors, Yves took us on a tour of the church building. It is a renovated theatre that was built in
the 1930's. At the end of the tour he took us to the roof top that had a great vantage point of the city.
We were alos able to have some downtime in the afternoon. Some went shopping and others slept (it
was a good Sabbath).
The preacher was very vivid and communicated the scriptures passionately. One thing he mentioned
was the story in Luke 22. Jesus has just told his disciples that he was gpoing to suffer and die. Jesus
announces the biggest event in history that will eventually lead to his death (vs. 20 - 22). Then what
do the disciples do immediately after Jesus announces this? - they start quarrelling about who will be
the greatest among them (v. 24). He Jesus is talking about laying down his life and the disciples are
disputing about who is the BEST! It is a good lesson in humility. Jump to Sunday night's worship time.
We looked at what it meant to be a team. The teaching was on John 13:1-17. Here again Jesus
announces his death, then "show them the full extent of his love" (v. 1). When is should have been
about Jesus, He makes it about his team and how he loves them and wants to serve them, even the
betrayer - Judas. Do you think God is speaking to our team? Do you think he wants to communicate
something to us? So we washed each others feet - literally. It was real powerful experience. Once a
person would wash someone's feet that person would pray for the other person. It was an amazing
lesson and experience in humility - the kind that brings life.
In the park with a freeze and a handful of Love
Yesterday was a significant step out of many of our team's comfort zones as we took to Parc
Fontaine in the heart of Montreal. Everyone here at SOAR has either a bright orange or blue
t-shirt and our first objective was to do a prolonged freeze. It's basically a time where everyone
Page 34
SOAR MONTREAL

(Continued from page 34)
involved freezes in a position while the world continues on around them. We first spent our time
walking around the park, praying for those that we may come in contact ith. Walking, claiming,
praising, and interceding for the people of Montreal. The whole group gathered (125 of us) and we
froze ourselves along a main path and a bridge. Kevin chose poorly as his freeze position was bent
over catching the football that was just thrown to him. For four (4) minutes we didn't move. People
came to look, some stared, some tried to talk to us, and some even touched us to see what was
going on. All 125 of our group did not move. At the end we all shouted Jesu a dit, je suis la lumiere
du monde, which means, Jesus said, I am the Light of the world. Some watchers clapped while
others just stared like we were crazy and Kevin just was thankful
he could stand up again.
The second part of the park was to give out roses and water
bottles to people in the park with the simple message that it was
a free gift because they were important and Jesus loved them.
The response was to say the least, incredible. People exclaimed
out loud to their friends and family that they were important just
because we said so, others actively hunted us down to hear why we giving out these things. We met
a ex-Mormon woman named Angela, who claimed to not realize she was an important person and
was astounded that Christians thought she was. The simple love of Christ impacted her and she
encouraged us to continue with this simplicity since many people here in Montreal had been hurt by
the church. Two other groups met women just finished their cancer treatments, who claimed that
these roses were delivered by angels, that they were just what they needed. BY the time the group
was finished it seemed that everyone we passed either has a rose, or was looking for someone to get
one from. God truly blessed and answered our prayers. Please continue to pray for Oscar, his story is
broken and desperate need of repair. He is Colombian and spent a significant time with Kevin and
Emily, giving them a rather interesting tour of their trip to the Park. He wants something deeper and
seems to be looking for relationships that mean something.
The team is strong and loving each other and seems to be gaining an intercessory heart for the city.
Please pray for us that our hearts and minds would be tuned to the plans God has for us in the city,
that the will of God would be alive and bursting from us. Thank you for all your love and support
both in prayer and in thoughts.
Community Dinner
We want to raise awareness of our Sunday
Night Community Dinner (SNCD) program in the
Connection Point.
Just a little history for those of you who are new
to Gracepoint and SNCD, this program has been
running for over 15 years. It was the vision of
one of our members, Dorothea Bergen to
provide an opportunity for the less fortunate in
our community to have a good nutritious meal in
a pleasant environment. Those dinners have
grown from a handful of guests and volunteers
to a dinner that now feeds 150 plus people
every week. Ten teams work in rotation to
prepare a variety of excellent meals, a different
menu each week. These teams are fuelled by
dozens of volunteers.
I have had the privilege of leading the kitchen
aspect of this ministry for 5 years. I consider it a
blessing to work with so many wonderful folks.
The dinners are financed mainly through
donations from individuals and charitable
groups, with the church picking up the shortfall
when necessary. We also receive food
donations from various sources from time to
time. Besides the volunteers from within
Gracepoint, we also get volunteer help from
other churches in the area as well as Boy Scouts,
Rotarians, and others in our community.
Although the food part of the SNCD is the
essential ingredient that brings the needy folks
into our facility, we attempt to feed both the
physical and spiritual body. Kevin Snyder
heads up the spiritual ministry that begins in
the auditorium as soon as the guests arrive.
There are folks who greet them, visit with
them and are there to make them feel
welcome. The dinner
'I tell you the truth,
whatever you did for
one of the least of
these brothers of
mine, you did for me.'
Matthew 25:40 NIV
is followed by a short
devotional, a time of
singing and prayer.
Many of the guests
avail themselves of the
opportunity to have
someone pray for
them. The dinner
program is seen as their church for many
who come.
Stay tuned for testimonies from both the
volunteers and the guests.
Summer often brings a shortage of
volunteers as many take their summer
vacation. So if you are looking for a fun
experience consider offering your services
over the summer. Contact Marie at
CREATIVE
MEMORIES
“There are memories in your life worth keeping and sharing. Photos, stories, thoughts, mementos.....
Things that make you feel happy, feel blessed, feel reflective, feel something. The photos and stories
let us know you’ve lived. The feelings let you know you’re alive.
It is my opinion that these are things worth sharing, celebrating and saving - forever. And it’s Creative
Memories’ position that those celebrations should be simple to capture.”
