<strong>INTERNAL</strong> <strong>REGULATION</strong> <strong>OF</strong> <strong>THE</strong> <strong>LIBRARY</strong><br />

<strong>1.</strong> <strong>General</strong> <strong>aspects</strong><br />

<strong>1.</strong><strong>1.</strong> The Library is normally open from 1st September to 31 July of each year and in August<br />

depending on staff availability. It is closed on bank holidays according to the academic calendar.<br />

The opening hours are published every year.<br />

<strong>1.</strong>2. Information services offered by the Library to users are:<br />

- Consultation of documents stored in the Library;<br />

- Loans of books stored in the Library;<br />

- Bibliographic searches.<br />

<strong>1.</strong>3. Further services offered by the Library to institutional users (defined at<br />

point 2.1) are:<br />

- purchase of books and subscription to periodicals on Library funds;<br />

- purchase of books on individual funds of professors;<br />

- cataloguing and storage of books, periodicals and other documents (reports, balance sheets…)<br />

<strong>1.</strong>4. The regulation of the Central Library of Politecnico di Milano applies for<br />

norms not specified in this regulation.<br />

2. Access to Library services<br />

2.<strong>1.</strong>Services are provided for professors, researchers, PhD students and academic staff included in<br />

the staff list of the Department.<br />

2.2. Students researching under the supervision of a faculty member are also admitted to the<br />

Library showing their official card.<br />

2.3. Users from other institutions can access the Library showing the badge, issued by the<br />

Secretariat of the Library after approval by a supervisor.<br />

2.4. Users not fulfilling the present regulation may be sospended from the Library services.<br />

3. Consultation<br />

3.<strong>1.</strong> Professors, researchers, PhD students and academic staff included in the staff list of the<br />

Department enjoy free access to consultation of documents stored in the Library.


3.2. Users defined at points 2.2. e 2.3. can consult documents in the Library:<br />

- filling the appropriate form;<br />

- showing the badge;<br />

- leaving a valid ID card.<br />

3.3. Users can ask the loan of a book, according to rules in section 4, by<br />

filling the appropriate form.<br />

3.4. Loans of journals, periodicals, reports, dictionaries and enciclopedias are<br />

generally not allowed.<br />

4. Loans<br />

4.<strong>1.</strong> Institutional users can borrow maximum 10 volumes at the same time for a maximum period<br />

of 3 months.<br />

4.2. Other users can borrow maximum 5 volumes at the same time for a maximum period of 1<br />

month.<br />

4.3. The Library can always ask the immediate return of one or more volumes even before the date<br />

of expiration of the loan.<br />

4.4. Users have to inform the Library staff about the bad conditions of a book when borrowing it.<br />

4.5. Any damage to books will result in the suspension from the loan service and in an appropriate<br />

charge, according to the regulation of the Central Library of Politecnico di Milano.<br />

4.6. Any delay in returning borrowed volumes will result in the suspension from the loan service.<br />

4.7. In case of loss of a borrowed book, the responsible user will be charged of an adequate<br />

amount, according to the regulation of the Central Library of Politecnico di Milano.<br />

5. Copies of documents<br />

5.<strong>1.</strong> Copies of books stored in the Library are not allowed.<br />

5.2. Copies of other documents may be allowed.<br />

6. Acquiring documents<br />

6.<strong>1.</strong> Documents acquired by the Library with personal funds must meet requirements of high<br />

scientific quality and coherence with themes of the Department. Besides, any document must be,<br />

at least potentially, interesting for several researchers within the Department.


6.2. All institutional users can submit a request for acquiring books. Specifying the price of the<br />

book will allow to purchase the book more quickly.<br />

6.3. All institutional users can submit a request for subscription to journals or periodicals with<br />

Library funds through the appropriate form. Requests submitted after 31 July of each year will be<br />

considered for the following year.<br />

6.4. The Library has the right to select the books to be acquired considering the available funds,<br />

the level of interest of the documents, their cost and the balanced allocation of funds among the<br />

several disciplinary areas.<br />

6.5. The Library will be in charge of acquiring the books requested by the individual professors,<br />

who have to specify the fund to be used.<br />

6.6. All books purchased autonomously by individual professors on their own funds must be sent<br />

to the Library for cataloguing and storage.
