Demystifying
Estate Planning
Five Common Myths Debunked
You don’t need a last name like
Rockefeller, Morgan or Vanderbilt to
require an estate plan. Generally,
anyone who has children or owns
assets such as property should have
a proper estate plan in place.
An estate plan is an important
part of an overall financial plan.
A well-crafted estate plan spells out
the manner in which you want your
property managed and distributed.
Below are five common myths that we
debunk to help make sure your assets
are protected.
1. Estate planning is for the elderly.
It is wise to have a well-crafted estate plan
during every life stage. Estate planning
can help you distribute property in a
manner consistent with your wishes, help
care for loved ones, and save money on
taxes and fees.
2. If I am not married and don’t
have children, I don’t need an
estate plan.
Even if you are single and have no children,
an estate plan can help:
• Plan for possible incapacity
• Provide for relatives
• Help your business
3. I created a will years ago,
so I am covered.
Making sure your will AND your
beneficiary designations are current helps
ensure your assets pass on to heirs in the
manner you choose. An out-of-date or
improperly drafted will can cause your
estate to be distributed under the laws of
intestate, which vary by state. Your will
should be reviewed and updated
periodically with the assistance of a
competent estate-planning attorney.
Also, certain assets, such as IRAs, life
insurance, and annuities, move separately
based solely on the beneficiary forms
completed when you established these
accounts—despite what a will may say!
4. My will is safely stored in my
safe deposit box.
Safe deposit boxes are usually sealed at
death and made inaccessible. Make sure
your executor has the authority and the key
to access the box. Alternatively, experts
recommend keeping a conformed copy,
which is a duplicate of the original with
essential legal features—such as signature
and seal—typed or indicated in writing, at
home. The original should remain with the
attorney who prepared the document.
5. I update my will by hand,
so it’s current.
One of the speediest ways to invalidate
a will is to make a handwritten change
on the document. Even if you initial it,
hand-written changes, called interlineation,
are not usually accepted by a court.
The judge may disregard the handwriting
and keep the original terms, but it is
possible that the will may be deemed
invalid in its entirety.
Enlist the services of a professional
Working with a trusted estate-planning
attorney is an effective way to create a wellrounded
estate plan that helps your loved
ones avoid financial chaos. To get started,
visit www.mystatewill.com to see what it may
cost your heirs if you die without a will.
member spotlight
Editor’s Note: In this edition of Member Spotlight, we highlight an article that two
business members—Sameer Kumar and Mike Agugliaro of Amazing Business Amazing Life—
submitted. It provides tips on helping get everything done.
Believe it or not, you can get “stuff” done while you sleep.
It’s called outsourcing, and now anyone can benefit from it.
Business-owners are the biggest outsourcers. They make more money, kill overhead,
and reduce stress by outsourcing. Companies have call-answering services, delivery
services, and outside organizations that handle payroll. Individuals do it, too, for
returning phone calls, writing checks, organizing calendars and researching vacation deals.
SHOULD I OR SHOULDN’T I?
The simplest way to determine if something should be outsourced is to run it
through a Decision-Making/Implementation Process. By doing this, you’ll accomplish
two things. First, you’ll know which tasks should get done and those that can be
eliminated. This can slash your to-do list by as much as 20%.
The Decision-Making portion of the formula helps you determine if the task:
• Makes you money
• Saves time
• Increases your sanity
• Improves quality of life
• Provides a long-term benefit
If the task fits at least two of these criteria, then the Implementation part of the
formula guides you as to whether you should do it yourself or outsource it.
Among the questions answered by the Implementation process are:
• Do I enjoy it?
• Do I do it best?
• Is there a tangible or intangible benefit?
• Is it an obligation?
• Can I outsource it without losing the benefits?
Get It
Done
While
You
Sleep!
How Outsourcing
Can Help With Your
To-Do List
OUTSOURCING STRATEGIES
Two of the best outsourcing strategies
are concierge services and virtual
assistants. Both are simple and
inexpensive ways of getting your feet
wet with outsourcing.
Concierge services can help with
travel reservations, car rentals, finding
hotels, booking flights, and making
restaurant reservations. Some less
common ways to use concierge services
are locating bakeries with allergy-free
baked goods for children’s birthdays,
providing a list of the best software for
your business, and helping coordinate
seminars or events.
VIRTUAL ASSISTANTS (VAs)
Simply, Virtual Assistants can take care
of everything that does not require
physical presence. They’re similar to
concierge services, but a VA can be
anywhere, as long as he or she has a
reliable Internet connection and phone.
So, what’s your role in working with a
VA? You’re responsible for being very
detailed and organized in the delegation
of your tasks. Identify what needs to be
done, deadlines, how the VA should
contact you with questions, and how
the final delivery should look.
A sampling of VA tasks includes
answering calls, maintaining your
calendar, arranging appointments,
organizing travel and reservations, and
following up with clients or prospects.
They can even have flowers—complete
with a card—delivered to your spouse.
A good VA will cost anywhere from $2
to $100 an hour, depending on the
complexity of what you need done and
the location of the VA. They can be
hired by the hour or on a project basis.
You can learn more about VAs by
visiting www.ivaa.org, the website of
the International Virtual Assistants
Association (IVAA).
An Easy, Money-Saving Tip for 2011: Refinance Your Auto Loan
Resolutions are as much a part of New Year’s as
singing Auld Lang Syne. If you’re like most Americans,
making a resolution isn’t the hard part. Keeping it is.
Statistics say only 10% of us follow through on our
resolutions for the entire year.
If saving money is one of your goals for 2011, today’s low interest rates offer
a great opportunity. And we’re not simply talking about refinancing your
mortgage. Take a look at your auto loan. You may be able to save hundreds
of dollars and lower your monthly payment.
Saving Money is Easy
Refinancing your auto loan is simple. The application only takes about 5–10
minutes to complete. Time well spent, considering how much you can save.
A common interest rate two years ago was 7.00% APR. Current rates are about
5.00% APR 1 . By refinancing at today’s lower rates, you can save considerable
money over the life of the loan, as you can see from the chart below.
(married couples
Interest Rate (APR) Monthly Payment filing Total jointly) Loan Cost
7.00% $463.15 $16,673.40
4.99% $449.49 $16,181.64
Note: Based on $15,000 remaining on a loan for 36 months.
Low Fees
Auto refinancing does not require much in terms of out-of-pocket expenses.
You will have to pay a lien-holder fee, which varies by state but should be
less than $100. Another potential cost is a pre-payment penalty for your
existing loan, though Affinity members do not have to worry
about this fee if their original loan is with Affinity.
Jump-Start the Process
It’s best to refinance within the first two years of the loan.
If you wait longer, your car’s value may not be enough
collateral for the loan.
There’s another advantage, according to Johana Gomera,
Consumer Loan Manager. “Interest on a car loan is frontloaded.
It’s better to refinance early on, because that’s when
you’re paying the most interest,” said Johana.
The best way to get started is to talk to an experienced loan
advisor at Affinity. They can steer you in the right direction
so you save money in the year ahead. Call 800.325.0808,
ext. 3888, or visit affinityfcu.org/autoloan to learn more.
SHOULD YOU REFINANCE
YOUR AUTO LOAN?
Consider these three factors when
determining if you should refinance:
1. IS YOUR LOAN UPSIDE-DOWN? If your car
is worth less than what you owe, refinancing
may be the only way to make it right-side up.
A lower interest rate may help reduce the
“loan value” to a level close to or equal that of
the car’s actual value.
2. DOES YOUR LOAN HAVE A HIGH
INTEREST RATE? Compare your rate with
those now available. If it’s higher by 1% or
more, you should refinance.
3. IS THE MONTHLY PAYMENT TOO HIGH?
Refinancing at a lower rate will reduce your
monthly payment. Avoid the temptation of
lowering it further by extending the term or
you may wind up with an upside-down loan.
Affinity: The Right Place to Park Your Auto Loan
Affinity can help refinance your existing auto loan, as well as find a
new car for you. Members benefit from a rate as low as 4.99% APR 2 .
Affinity charges the same rate, regardless of whether you are
buying a new or used vehicle. We don’t change the rate based on
loan length or amount.
Affinity also offers auto loan discounts that can be combined for
increased savings! You can save through our Green Auto Loan, Auto
Loyalty Program, and Extended Warranty Coverage Discount.
College students and recent graduates who finance an auto
by Affinity through our Auto Graduate Loan program.
Moving from Me,LLC
You might know your intended’s
shoe size, and favorite food and film.
You may even know some family
secrets. You communicate, trust
and care for each other.
But do you know your soul mate’s
credit score, spending habits and
attitudes toward saving money?
Do you know your prospective
spouse’s financial goals and dreams?
If the answer is “no,” don’t be alarmed.
While many couples share some of
their most intimate thoughts, and dot all
the i’s and cross the t’s when it comes
to wedding details, many fail to
communicate about one of the most
important topics that can make or break
any loving relationship: FINANCES.
Financial Harmony Leads to Marital Bliss
“It may not sound very romantic, but worry
and confusion about money can strain any
relationship. By tackling money matters
before walking down the aisle, you will have
taken a significant step on your journey
toward financial and family harmony,” said
Diane Boyer, Budget & Credit Team Leader,
Affinity Federal Credit Union.
While there is no “one-size-fits-all” system
that works, one thing is certain: communication
is the key. Money can be an emotional
issue. When discussing finances with your
partner, it’s extremely important to be
nonjudgmental and honest. And that means
being honest with yourself, as well.
Here are four tips to help you move from
Me, LLC to We, Inc.
Step ONE: Let the Numbers Do the Talking
Exchanging copies of important documents
can provide a springboard for discussions
about saving and managing money. Some of
the documents Diane suggests are:
• Credit Reports — disclose an accurate
history of triumphs, mistakes and habits.
• Tax Returns — disclose income.
• Statements of Net Worth — a snapshot
of the value of your financial holdings that
can be created by listing all your assets
and subtracting your liabilities.
Need a copy of your credit report or help
calculating your net worth?
ONLINE RESOURCES MAKE IT EASY.
You can obtain one free credit report every
12 months from each of the three major credit
services—Equifax.com, Transunion.com or
Experian.com. All three can be accessed very
easily by visiting AnnualCreditReport.com.
You can calculate your net worth online at
http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/networth/
networth.html.
Step ONE Talking Points:
• What income is coming in? How will
you manage any differences in income?
(For example, if one person is the sole
bread winner or makes considerably more
than the other, will he/she have the final
say in financial decisions or will you
decide together?)
• Are there outstanding debts that need to be
cleaned up? How will that be accomplished?
• Will you commingle your finances or
keep them separate?
• Will one or both of you tackle the chores
of paying bills and managing finances?
• Should you have separate credit cards or joint?
• If it’s a second marriage, or if there
are substantial assets, is a prenuptial
agreement necessary?
toWe,Inc.
Talking Money Matters
Before the Wedding
Step TWO: Discuss Goals and Dreams
Once you know the numbers, dig a little
deeper. Explore each other’s “financial
personality” by revealing your goals and
dreams. One way to get the conversation
started is to discuss how your parents
handled money matters, and express your
likes and dislikes about their system.
Step TWO Talking Points:
• Do you consider yourself a spender
or a saver?
• What are your financial expectations,
goals and dreams? Do you seek
financial security? Do you want to own
a home? Retire early? Save for a future
child’s education?
• Will you require a budget to prioritize
and reach certain goals?
• What are your attitudes toward debt?
Step THREE: Consider Technology
Fortunately, today’s couples have a resource
their parents never had: technology. Online
banking, automatic bill pay and money
management systems such as Affinity’s
FinanceWorks(See related article on page12)
take much of the mystery and drudgery out
of financial chores. Use these tools together to
help you decide on a plan and stick to it.
Step FOUR: Communicate Regularly
Of course, technology won’t replace the
initial conversation and the many future
talks that will follow during life’s twists and
turns. Communicating openly and regularly
can put you on track toward effective money
management, as well as make your relationship
much richer in many other ways.
anch spotlight: New Providence
From Business Advice to Consumer Loans,
the New Providence Branch Does It All
It’s not unusual for an Affinity member to stop by the
New Providence branch just to say hello. On Saturdays,
they might even bring bagels.
“It’s that kind of a family feeling that we evoke,” said
Shindora Knox, Affinity Member Experience Officer. “A lot of
companies say they are into relationship building, but at
Affinity, we live it on a daily basis.”
That’s why it didn’t surprise the staff when a member
stopped in on her way to a job interview. “She had been out
of work for a while,” said Shindora, “and was excited to have
the interview. She came in to ask us how she looked.”
However, when the member returned to her car, it wouldn’t
start. She returned to the lobby to ask for help. That’s when
the Affinity team jumped into action.
Explains Shindora, “We called AAA but they require you to
wait by the car with your information. We didn’t want her to
miss the interview, so one of our team members drove her to
the interview while another stayed
with her car. By the time
she returned, the car
was fixed.”
“As it turns out, she got the job.
When she was ready to replace
that car, she financed her new one
through us.”
With You Every Step of the Way
That kind of happy ending is not
the only unique aspect of Affinity.
Shindora notes how Affinity offers
products and services that meet
the changing needs of members
as they reach life milestones.
“We have a member who has
been with us since his teenage
years, when he opened his
savings account,” said Shindora.
“He became a barber, and for the last 20 years has been
working with his mentor. Now, his mentor is retiring and
he wants to buy the business. We’re helping him with
the financing and we’ll continue to advise him in this
new venture.”
Member businesses often showcase themselves in the lobby,
and the branch sponsors quarterly business networking
events where members can share best practices.
Warm Atmosphere…and Cocoa
For business and consumer members alike, the
New Providence branch offers a warm atmosphere, complete
with complimentary coffee, tea and cocoa.
Community service is a priority at Affinity, as well as at
the New Providence branch. This year alone, the staff has
volunteered in more than 30 activities.
Shindora Knox,
Affinity Member Experience Officer.
“Everyone who works here has this innate desire to
serve,” said Shindora. “After all, that’s what Affinity
is all about.”
The 5-MinuteIRA Primer
Your Biggest Tax Mistake in 2011? Not Funding Your IRA for 2010!
There’s Still Time to Contribute...
Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are probably one of the
most misunderstood and underutilized financial tools available.
A 2008 AARP study revealed that 44% of Americans don’t
understand how an IRA works. If you haven’t opened an IRA,
it’s a good idea to do so. IRAs offer amazing tax benefits that allow your
savings to compound much faster than if held in an ordinary taxable account.
Renée Vanek, President of Affinity Investment Services, gave Affinity Connections a
five-minute review of IRAs so you can make the most of the tax advantages these plans offer.
Remember, even if you have a retirement plan at work such as a 401(k), you can still contribute to an IRA!
IRA TYPES: TRADITIONAL AND ROTH
Traditional
In a Traditional IRA, you make contributions
with money you can typically deduct on your
income tax return. Even if you don’t qualify for
the income tax deduction, your money will still
grow, tax-deferred, until withdrawn for
retirement (after age 59 1/2, but no later than
age 70 1/2) at which time it is taxed.
Roth
With a Roth IRA, you make contributions with
money on which you’ve already paid taxes,
so your money grows tax-free. You can withdraw
your original contributions (but not earnings)
for any reason without penalty or taxes.
After contributing for at least five years and once
you have turned the age of 59 1/2, you can
withdraw as much as you want—100% tax free
and penalty free!
WHO CAN CONTRIBUTE TO AN IRA?
Anyone under the age of 70 1/2 who has earned
income* from employment may contribute.
The maximum contribution for tax year 2010 is
$5,000 or 100% of employment compensation,
whichever is less. Anyone age 50 or older may
make an additional contribution of $1,000.
WHAT IS THE CONTRIBUTION DEADLINE?
You have until April 15, 2011 to make your
2010 contribution. Contributions for 2011 may
be made at any time during the year up until tax
time next year.
TAX LAW CHANGE EXPANDS ROTH IRA CONVERSION ELIGIBILITY
A new tax law that went into effect in 2010 has removed the income limit for Roth IRA conversion eligibility, allowing anyone to switch a Traditional
IRA to a Roth IRA. Prior to last year, Roth IRA conversions were only possible if your modified adjusted gross income was under $100,000.
There is one important rule to know before converting—you need to pay federal income taxes on any portion of the conversion that you haven’t yet
paid taxes on. But, if you convert in the 2010 tax year, you can spread the payments over two years to lessen the impact.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IRAS BEFORE FILING YOUR TAXES
There is still time to open a new IRA or contribute to an existing account—and you may be able to deduct it on your 2010 income tax return!
Meet with an Affinity Financial Advisor to discuss:
Traditional/Roth IRAs—which is best for you?
Rolling over your 401(k) to an IRA—are you changing jobs, retiring or leaving a job? If so, it may be a great time to consolidate your investments
into a rollover IRA, which can also offer you a much broader range of investment choices.
For advice and information on IRAs, call an Affinity Financial Advisor at 888.734.1300 or visit affinityfcu.org/ira.
Online Banking: Managing Your Finances Made Easy
Online banking may have been a novelty in 1995 when it first
came into existence, but today millions of people consider it
a necessity. According to Fiserv Inc., a provider of financial
services technologies, four out of five U.S. households with
Internet access—nearly 68 million homes—use online banking
and bill payment services.*
Online banking is especially useful for individuals pressed for
time and/or who seek more control over their money.
To find out exactly what online banking has to offer, Affinity
Connections spoke with John Vitug, Electronic Services
Supervisor at Affinity.
Affinity Connections (AC):
What are some of the
advantages of online banking?
John Vitug (JV): Online
banking gives you the ability
to manage finances quickly,
easily and securely. It takes
almost everything you can
physically do at a branch
office or through the mail
and allows you to do it
virtually, including making
deposits. It is also environmentally
friendly, as it can
significantly reduce the
amount of paper used for
financial transactions.
AC: How safe is online banking?
JV: Some people unnecessarily
shy away because they think
online banking is not secure.
In my opinion, it is safer than
traditional mail because
online banking requires
many security layers. In fact,
online banking has taken
major strides in this area,
such as requiring stronger
passwords and more security
questions. Affinity also uses
the highest level of encryption
to ensure secure connections.
AC: Can I pay bills through
Affinity’s Online Banking?
JV: Members can use Online
Bill Pay to pay utility bills,
credit cards, and any other
bills. With Online Bill Pay,
you can also receive your bills
online, which is a “greener”
alternative to paper bills,
and are more efficient
because you don’t have to
wait for a bill to arrive in the
mail. Instead, you receive an
email notification letting you
know when a bill is available
for review. You simply login,
view your bill, then make an
online payment. You can also
set up automatic bill pay in
response to an Ebill.
AC: How can I make deposits via
online banking?
JV: Using a typical flatbed
scanner, Affinity’s Online
Deposit by Scan service
allows members to scan and
deposit checks into their
Affinity accounts anytime.
It eliminates trips to the
branch or ATM. Funds from
checks deposited by 4:00pm
are available the same business
day. And businesses that use
our Online Deposit Pro
service can save up to $600 1
in fees per year compared to
competing services who
charge for check scanning!
AC: How can online
banking help me manage
my personal finances?
JV: Affinity offers
FinanceWorks, a personal
financial management tool
that allows members to
completely manage their
finances and put their entire
financial picture in
perspective. You can track
spending habits, set goals,
and make projections of
income and expenses. It’ll tell
you if you are overspending,
based on your income and
other expenses, and it even
allows you to collect and
print out valuable
tax information.
AC: How about transactions
over a mobile phone?
JV: Affinity’s Mobile Banking
website allows members who
have cell phones with mobile
browsers to make basic
banking transactions from
their phone, including
viewing account information,
paying bills and transferring
funds. Affinity also offers text
message banking, so members
can receive account balance
alerts on their phones.
AC: What’s the easiest way
to sign up for Online Banking
at Affinity?
JV: Just go to affinityfcu.org/
firstlogin. From there, follow
the steps to access your
account. Please note that you
must have an AUDREY
telephone banking PIN before
you can access your account
online. For more information,
TIPS ON
TIDYINGUP
It may be hard to believe as you unbundle from your hat, scarf, and winter coat,
Your Finances
but spring is right around the corner. Along with the warmer weather, blooming flowers, and tax day is the ritual of spring cleaning.
One task to add to your annual routine is to organize your finances. It’s more than tossing out old paperwork, though. You should
conduct regular maintenance to get the most out of every dollar. Below are tips that can help build wealth all year round.
1 Polish Your Credit
Credit reports are being used for everything from setting insurance rates to evaluating job
candidates. Get a free copy of your report at AnnualCreditReport.com. Make sure your
report is accurate including your credit limits. Also beyond your credit report, you should
review your interest rates and rewards programs associated with your credit cards. Compare
them with other cards to make sure you are getting the best deal. Also, speak to a
credit card coach to help keep you on the right track toward improving your credit.
2 Go Paperless
Receive financial statements and bills electronically.
Just be sure to back up your computer regularly.
Set up email alerts for your bills to make sure you
don’t miss a payment and get hit with a late fee.
Affinity offers Online Banking services that can help
get you started at affinityfcu.org/onlinebanking.
Tear-out chart for handy reference
3 Clean Up Your W-4
The average tax return last year was $3,036. 1 If you received a large
refund, it may mean your W-4 form does not list all your withholdings.
Visit www.irs.gov and use the withholding calculator to see if you can get
more out of your paycheck.
5 Invest in DIY Projects
Maintenance is key to protecting your most important asset—
your home. Spring is the perfect season to clean gutters and
inspect your roof. These simple tasks can help eliminate trapped
moisture that can cause major home damage.
7 Dust Off Your Portfolio
Chances are you will gather investment forms to do
your taxes. Take the opportunity to review them with
an Affinity Financial Advisor and make sure you are
progressing towards your goals.
9 Organize Your Passwords
Tired of keeping track of all your passwords? Clean up your work area with
programs such as 1Password (www.agilewebsolutions.com) or Passwords Plus
(www.dataviz.com). Both let you store passwords and other important data
directly in a secure file.
6 Off-season Projects
If your roof does need fixing, the early spring is when the work should be
done. Roofing companies charge a premium in the summer and many will
offer a better deal in the early spring. Patios and walkways are other projects
that usually cost less in the early spring compared to the summer.
8 Consolidate Investments
Renée Vanek, President of Affinity Investment Services, has another tip when reviewing your
portfolio. “Our Financial Advisors can help organize and consolidate your investments to fit
