UNIVERSIDAD CARLOS III DE MADRID

The Applied
Artificial Intelligence Group
The Applied Artificial Intelligence Group (GIAA) at the Carlos III University of Madrid has members with PhD
and Bachelor's degrees in Computer Science, Physics and Telecommunications Engineering. GIAA is a leader
group of Professors, Senior Lecturers, Lecturers, associates and PhD students known for their ability to solve
engineering problems with the newest Artificial Intelligence techniques: Machine Learning, Evolutionary Computation,
Data Mining, Multi-Objective Optimization, Fuzzy Systems and Intelligent Agents.
GIAA has a great deal of experience as engineering consultant group and as technical developers of customised
solutions in problems of data analysis and prediction, optimisation, data fusion, signal and image processing,
particularly in the air traffic domain.
We co-operate with our clients throughout the process of transferring and introducing our solutions and we provide
them with the tools and knowledge required for their tuning and maintenance.

READY FOR CHANGE?
Incorporating technological changes can be a daunting challenge requiring a high level of specialisation and
the adequate means. Our Group offers a highly-qualified human team and the most advanced technical backup
posible for:
• Optimising processes: We use powerful prediction and optimisation techniques based on several criteria
that were successfully applied to signal-processing problems and system configuration and adjustment to
attain performance requirements. Some of our past particular domains of applications are:
- Optimisation of traffic flow management, applied to roads, airport surface operations, etc.
- Designing of surveillance systems for tracking mobiles with different sensors (video, radar, mini-radar
networks, etc.)
- Tuning of video-based identification for vehicles.
• Extracting implicit behaviours from intelligent data analysis: We have a great deal of expertise in
predicting relationships between different types of variables, extracting trends and building useful models,
through automated techniques of intelligent data analysis. We have applied these techniques to the following
cases:
- Implementation of systems for automatic data acquisition and analysis. Starting from the analysis of
input-output relationships for a given (manual) system, we provide an automatic system with the same
functionality (it produces the same outputs as the corresponding inputs in the original system).
- Extraction of rules for data association in complex tracking systems (video and high-resolution radar).
- Extraction of rules to detect and classify situations, for instance conflicts on airpor surface.
- Classification of vehicles (according to the size, type, technical features, etc.), analysing video images
or surface radar data.

• Automation of dynamic processes of scheduling and decision-making with Machine Learning, Searching
Algorithms and Software Agents. Machine Learning allows us to automate scheduling tasks and decisionmaking
processes that can be critical for business. Computer systems become then adaptive to sudden changes
of requirements and user profiles. We have implemented software solutions to co-operate in the management
of air traffic flow: extracting rules of air controllers’ behaviour, in order to optimise some repetitive tasks: clustering,
conflict detection, operations scheduling, etc.
• Design of data mining tools using techniques for intelligent recovery of data. We have a great deal of
experience in last-generation software solutions to data mining problems. We use techniques of semantic analysis
of data, decision trees, neural networks and genetic algorithms that multiply the performance of the commonly
used tools of data mining.
• Improving Electronic Commerce services with Intelligent Agents We have expertise in the introduction
of intelligent agents into electronic commerce applications. Intelligent agents improve the profiling of buyers
and sellers in Internet, take proactive decisions, and help them co-operate with each other. Particularly we have
contributed with trust management through a distributed reputation system used for automatic negotiations and
search of partners and clients/providers.
• Applying Artificial Intelligence and Simulation techniques to engineering problems. We use these
techniques to improve the performance and abilities of systems that are difficult to tune and adapt. We provide
an engineering consulting service and technical viability studies to companies who are looking for the potential
contribution of Artificial Intelligence to the simulation of communications, physics and business models.
OUR EXPERIENCE
We are providing support and engineering consulting services to several companies, giving customised training
courses and co-operating in national and international research and development projects. Some of these
companies are INDRA, AENA, ISDEFE, GENASYS II SPAIN, THOMSON AYRSYS, BAE SYSTEMS, PARK
AYR SYSTEMS
Furthermore, the Data Processing and Simulation Group, at the Telecommunication Faculty of Universidad
Politécnica de Madrid, acts as our partner in most of the ongoing projects, and we collaborate with the
Technology Dissemination Centre (CEDITEC).
INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS
Some of our projects have produced pioneering tools and systems adapted to the requirements of our clients:
• Surveillance System based on Video-Cameras, to monitor and identify surface traffic in airports (planes,
trucks and buses) with a network of video cameras.
• Airport Data Fusion System, to process data from surface radar and fuse with other sensors, following the
A-SMGCS paradigm for automatic traffic management on airport surface (Advanced Surface Movement
Guidance and Control Systems)
• Recommending System with Intelligent Agents, to provide customised suggestions to the final clients
according to similarities, past activities and explicit likes in distributed decisions, based on subjective preferences
such as movies, music and books.
• Optimisation, Prediction and Data Analysis, oriented to Computer Science companies interested in the
integration of these novel techniques to their existing products.
