Third Quarter 2006
Business Booming But Beware of Boomer Bow Out
During the third quarter
we experienced global
upheaval with the
Israel and Hezbollah
war, a thwarted terrorist
attempt against the
United States and
nuclear testing in North
Ray Pekowski
Korea. Thankfully these
global events seemed to have little long-term
effect on our economy or our industry.
I don’t know if it is because we are getting
accustomed to the thought that we will be
attacked or that our industry is just resilient to
global events. Reported corporate earnings
are at record highs, and most, if not all, of us
operate in a global environment.
inflation in 2007. And that could have an
impact on what exhibitors spend with respect
to booth space and sponsorships. With
record profits, I am not sure just how much
that will impact us.
Long term, I do think there is one thing that
will impact us: the “Boomer” exit from the
workforce. It is forecasted that we are headed
into the worst labor shortage in the history of
our country. Moreover I think it will be safe
to say that attendance at shows will begin
to decline. This will no longer be a good
measurement to track unless you know the
universe and use weighted averages.
On the other hand, education will be at a
premium and what better way to get this than
by attending an educational conference and
trade show!
While we are just in the beginning stages of
the “exit,” the numbers don’t lie. Boomer
exit: 70 million. Replacements: 30 million.
Shortage: 40 million. Depending on your
viewpoint, the shortage is forecasted to come
from the blue-collar workers. The executives
will be there but we will be searching for
the staffers. Of course developments in
the immigration laws will have an impact
In fact, corporations are accumulating
treasure chests of cash and many are either
acquiring companies -- which is not good
for our industry because there eventually will
be fewer companies to exhibit and attend --
or repurchasing their own stock. Call it the
“Enron effect” if you will, but one good thing
is our federal deficit is declining at a much
faster pace as a result.
Business Booming
on this crisis. It is certainly a Catch-22.
One thing that you can count on is the old
supply and demand rule. With a 40 million
person shortage you can count on paying
much higher wages.
Technology and automation will help. But
retention of employees will be challenging to
every employer. Think of the major league
sports teams and the impact they felt when
free agency was invoked. Economies of scale
will be paramount in order to survive, and
Single Source ® is just the beginning.
How the workforce shortage plays out within
our industry remains to be seen. For me, I
always love a challenge. It will be fun to see
how creative everyone becomes managing
their businesses. Of course, I am one of the
Boomers, so eventually I will be watching and
reading about this from my house in Tahiti!
All kidding aside, I want to leave the industry
in good shape for many generations to come.
This industry has been fun to work in, and it
has been good to me and my family. One
of the ways to do that is to begin now. The
Exhibition Services & Contractors Association
(ESCA) has the responsibility to first educate
our customers about the problem and then
provide a plan to the show organizers on how
we plan to meet this challenge.
Most of us are familiar with Jim Collins, the
author of several business including the most
recognized: “Good to Great.” Jim was the
keynote speaker at the recent ASAE & The
Center annual conference. While the book is
really a study of the differences of companies
in the past, the principles he outlines do apply
to the future. A few of those principles that
stuck with me after Jim’s address:
“Greatness is never-ending. It is cumulative,
not a single moment in time. It is a practice,
not luck. It is about organizational excellence,
not individual achievement.”
Good, on the other hand, is the enemy of
great. Being good breeds eventual death of
a company. Just look at the auto and airline
industries for examples of some very good
companies that are either dead or dying a
slow death. Key to being great is preserving
the core values, stimulating progress or
change, and having the discipline to keep
them in balance. Being a great company
takes at least three times the effort of a good
company. And its leaders are driven not by
money but by passion to be the best.
Here is some interesting data on two great
companies: It took Starbucks 13 years to
open its fifth store, now it opens five per day!
Ace Hardware is opening a store every 48
hours. We are very proud to be part of such a
great company as Ace!
ASAE & The Center, with the help of Jim
Collins, went on to write their own book on
what comprises a great association versus a
good one. I would love to hear from anyone
who reads it!
John Shrieves to be
General Manager, San Jose
President and CEO Ray
Pekowski is pleased to
announce Controller
John Shrieves has
accepted the position of
General Manager, San
Jose. John will move to
San Jose around the first
John Shrieves
of the new year. He will
continue at the Dallas Headquarters with his
regular responsibilities until then, in addition
to training a new controller.
As General Manager in San Jose, John will
oversee all office administration, project
management and customer service functions.
He will liaise with our clients in California
and be the in-office contact for the corporate
headquarters and other satellite offices.
“I am excited about the move and the chance
to work with Phil Lindecker and help out
the San Jose Office,” John says. “I am very
proud of my new role as General Manager
and hope to live up to the title and the needs
of the company. I have some training to do
before I can leave in areas of the company
where I have not previously been involved.”
Yellow Ribbon
Manager Kevin Davis recently reported for
active duty. Employees
said goodbye at a
you. We expect you to
return safely.

Celebrate Service
The Expo Group recently celebrated national
Customer Service Week, Oct. 2-8. Since
we are the premier service company in the
tradeshow industry, we wanted to honor
the occasion with treats for employees
throughout the week. On Wednesday
everyone -- including remote office workers
and those at showsite -- received a goody
bag with a new T-shirt.
The back of the shirts sums it all up:
This week was for all employees, not just the
customer service department, since we are
ALL involved in making The Expo Group No.1
in service. We did just a little something each
day, and it really helped reduce the stress we
sometimes feel during this busy tradeshow
season.
METALCON Makes a Difference
The Expo Group has been a proud partner
of METALCON International and PSMJ
Resources for 16 years, but the most recent
show in particular stands out. METALCON
show management coordinated with Homes
for Our Troops to donate a student-built
steel-framed home to U.S. Army Staff Sgt.
Paul Russell Marek, who is recovering from
injuries sustained in a bomb explosion
in Iraq.
The donation is the latest in a string of many.
“I was looking for something different when
I heard about Homes for Our Troops,” says
Vice President of Tradeshows Claire Kilcoyne.
Director of Customer Account Management
Dianne Bailey, center, honors Team Leaders John
Cantu and Erica Deapen Anderson.
Graphics Designer Jayme Goff shows off her new
T-shirt recognizing all TEG employees during
national Customer Service Week.
“At first, HFOT did not have any candidates
in the Tampa area, but three weeks before
the show we found Russ Marek, who needed
a home built to ADA specifications.”
The team at METALCON enlisted help, which
was quick in coming. Kilcoyne credits her
relationships with exhibitors, 37 of which
have been with the show from the beginning.
Long-term suppliers also made donations.
Roadway Express took responsibility for
transporting the steel framing to Marek’s
hometown in Southern Florida.
honoree, joined the exhibitors and attendees
for a dedication ceremony on the show’s
opening day. The ceremony began with a
color guard march into the hall, and then the
national anthem was played. Everyone was
inspired by Marek’s determination to stand
for the national anthem.
“There was not a dry eye in the house,”
Kilcoyne says. “It was such an emotional
start to the show. Russ touched every single
person. You felt strong just looking at him.
This resulted in a show unlike every other
show we’ve had. Everyone was in a great
place, and it was our biggest yet. We are all
judged on numbers, but I think we have our
own class of tradeshow.”
Keenan, Geist Join National Sales Team
Two new sales people have joined The
Expo Group as we continue to reach more
show organizers with the benefits of Single
Source ® . Terry Keenan has been named
Executive Vice President, National Sales after
20 years in the hotel industry, mostly with
Fairmont Hotels and Loews Hotels. Doug
Geist is Vice President, National Sales; he
was most recently in charge of the George
E. Fern Co.’s St. Louis office.
“I am very impressed with The Expo Group’s
Who Do You Trust?
Dana Doody
Who do you trust with
your house key? Who
do you trust with your
children, in your will?
Who do you trust
with your life? Who
do you trust with your
livelihood?
Sometimes we make decisions to trust in an
instant. I recently met the anesthesiologist
prepping my son for ear surgery and in an
instant he exuded such confidence I trusted
him to do whatever he wanted. Sometimes
we base decisions of trust on traditional
societal determinations – we trust the EMT
who comes when we call 911 because we
are ingrained to put faith in this profession.
Other times, we make people earn our trust.
It’s funny that this is more often in business
than in our personal lives. Why should we be
seemingly more protective of our livelihood
than of our life and the lives of our loved
ones? Perhaps in making business decisions
to trust we have more time to learn and
Terry Keenan
Doug Geist
cater to every exhibitor,” Geist says. “I am
looking forward to bringing my experience
to an organization dedicated to being the
premier service company in the industry.”
analyze before placing. It’s interesting to note
that trust is one of the least analytical things
in business. CEOs don’t advertise decisions
made based on their feelings, yet it was Jack
Welch who said, “You know it when you feel
it.” He placed his trust in those who inspired
confidence, not suspicion.
Ray Pekowski has a popular saying about the
sales process – first they have to know you,
then they have to like you, then they have to
trust you. Of course, if you want to trust our
sales team immediately, please be my guest. I
know they deserve it; but if you’re withholding
judgment, we’ll earn it.
Trust is essential in a service company like
ours. As our world shrinks, trust becomes
more and more vital in every facet of every
industry. Trust is an economic driver. Once
a client trusts you, the speed of business
accelerates. Contracts and projects are
created and completed with greater efficiency
based on the trust between client partners.
Think about it. You trust the local grocery store
“We are pleased to have these two join our
team as we continue to disrupt the tradeshow
industry, bringing forth positive change for show
managers and exhibitors with an unbeatable
customer service model, ” says President & CEO
Ray Pekowski.
The Expo Group has some of the best people
in the industry, Keenan says. “The belief
system, the commitment to customer service,
is shared from the top down and from the
bottom up. The Expo Group’s Single Source
Solution ® actually fulfills its promise.”
By Dana Freker Doody,
Director of Corporate Communications
to have all their pricing entered correctly so
that you are charged the right amount. This
enables you to check out in five minutes or
less. If you did not trust the store, you would
need to audit your receipt before paying.
I recently participated in a seminar of Stephen
M. R. Covey – the son of Mr. Seven Habits
-- who just wrote a book called “The SPEED
of Trust.” He explained trust directly affects
speed and cost. In a high-trust environment,
the speed of business increases and the cost
of doing business decreases.
Obviously this is why it is important to trust
your partners and vendors. Heck, that’s
why it’s important for vendors to trust their
own customers. As Covey said, “You can do
amazing things with trust.”
Certainly The Expo Group is working to earn
and keep your trust. It starts with our hiring
process, continues in training and is amplified
in our core values. What are you doing to
inspire the trust of your own customers? And
how can we help?

New Faces
To: Ray Pekowski
I wanted to share my appreciation and
thanks for the outstanding job your team
did at our recent Annual Conference in
Boston. I firmly believe that people are
the key to any success, and the team of
Jason Miller and Jason Ellenbecker are
great. After working with Susan Smith
for several conferences, we were slightly
anxious about the transition to a new
person. The anxiety has disappeared
and we look forward to working with
team Jason in the future. As far as we
are concerned, they are part of the
extended ASHE family. Please share
my thanks and appreciation.
Kate Wickham, ASHE
To: Barbara Fett
I would like to extend my deepest
appreciation to you and your staff at
The Expo Group for the outstanding
level of service your organization
provided to BICSI at our Link Workshops
in Chicago. Your commitment to
excellence and top-notch customer
service is reflected in the numerous
favorable comments received from our
attendees, exhibitors and staff. You and
your staff have made my job as Director
of Conferences & Meetings a very
enjoyable experience.
The success of any business venture
depends on strong leadership and
a committed workforce. It is evident
exemplifies this professional approach
and commitment to customer service.
We appreciate all that you have done
to make this year’s technology pavilion
a success. We certainly would not
have a pavilion this year if it had not
been for all of your hard work and
diligence in the selling department.
With the pavilion being new and many
of these companies being unfamiliar
with ASTRO, I recognize that it was not
an easy sell! We definitely want this
year’s pavilion to be a success and are
certainly hoping for a greater turn-out
in 2007. Thanks again for all of your
TEG Exhibits International Spotlight
Dresser Wayne recently wowed the National Association of Convenience Stores
with this exhibit created by TEG Exhibits International. The exhibit featured a twostory
structure at its center that was used for meeting space. Our exhibits division
harnesses the full power of The Expo Group to create innovative exhibits with
maximum efficiency. Find out what they can do for you, or tell your friends
and colleagues. Call 972-580-9000.
Great Customer Service All in the Family
Mark Crook, 47, son of TEG Exhibits
International’s Joy Ruddle, recently was
honored at a formal dinner celebrating 25
years of service at Neiman Marcus, North
Park. Mark has gone far beyond anyone’s
expectations for him, Joy says.
Despite his learning disabilities, Mark has
consistently provided great customer service
to Neiman Marcus customers for a quarter
of a decade – and counting. But is there a
career change in Mark’s future?
“We just enjoyed a weeklong cruise, and
Mark sang in the karaoke competition,”
Joy says. “They recorded a CD and now
all I hear is how he wants to become a rock
star. I tactfully suggested that he keep his day
job. He is truly a delight and a son any
mother would be so proud to call her own.”
Tom Hale…EXPOsed
By Dana Freker Doody,
Director of Corporate Communications
Anniversaries
Tom Hale, Brenner Warehouse Manager
Tom, you’ve been with The Expo
Group more than eight years.
Have you always managed
the Brenner Warehouse?
I worked in the industry for almost 18 years
before joining The Expo Group. I started
talking with Chuck Heck, who needed a
manager for Brenner, which was without fulltime
supervision. I finally decided to come
on full time. What I like over here is that it
is normally eight hours a day, five days a
week. Sure, we work some overtime and
Saturdays but that’s rare if it is not Ace Pallet
Alley time.
You play a big role in the Ace
Hardware shows. What do you
handle for that biannual show?
The Ace vendors ship their products here to
be prepared for featured deals at the show. I
organize the storage according departments
outlined by Ace, such as Department 7 is
all Lawn and Garden. The Ace team comes
to the warehouse before the show to check
through every deal. Once all the items
are displayed at the show, Ace Hardware
exhibition attendees -- the store owners and
buyers -- can order the product for direct
shipment to their store(s). It takes a lot of
logistical planning for all the materials to be
loaded onto trucks in the right order to make
for easy unloading. Then we start again on
the next season’s show.
Do you travel?
I don’t travel as much as I used to. I don’t
mind some travel, and I enjoy doing the
Ace shows. The travel in this profession can
be hard on you if you’re not careful. I used
to travel to shows across Texas and around
the country. I have lived in Dallas all my life.
For fun, we used to just get in the pickup
and drive – to the West, to the South. I still
would like to see Wyoming, Montana and
the Dakotas.
What else do you enjoy in
your free time?
I love reading. I read mysteries and detective
thrillers, watch movies and spend time
with friends. I used to be the barroom
Jim Thorpe, but when you get to be my
age that stops. I did own a bar once, The
Operations Gets Automated
Logistics employees across The Expo Group
enterprise are trading in their notebooks and
pencils for a keyboard and mouse. Operations
has undergone a major automation with
several new online tools designed to allow
The Expo Group to better serve you, our
customers.
To support inventory, a complete electronic
tracking module is under development. The
first stages of inventory tracking already are in
place with electronic inbound and outbound
manifests. Barcode/radio frequency is
supporting the tracking of each container into
and out of the warehouse.
When it comes to freight, tracking modules
have been implemented to allow internal
Roundtable. That is a 24-7 job,
very stressful.
What else takes up your time here
at the Brenner Warhouse?
Alfredo Hernandez and the carpet crew
work here, and they are always busy. We
also store some exhibits for the TEG Exhibits
International clients, plus our furniture
inventory. I keep the place clean and in
good shape, taking care of any maintenance
problems. I also fill in at the headquarters
if needed and on local shows as a
production supervisor.
A lot of the work we do now is
automated, even in operations.
How was that transition for you?
I’m a dinosaur. They dragged me kicking
and screaming into the 21st century. I went
to computer classes years ago, and I’m still
learning. Since The Expo Group is a Single
Source Solution ® , the computer automation
is just going to increase and improve.
Things just keep running smoother.
customers the ability to request pickups and
deliveries online while providing better alerts
for operations personnel.
In addition, automation has come to the
company’s internal purchase order and
invoice tracking processes. Online features
will soon improve the work order process
by creating a centralized system with robust
monitoring features.
All of these computer support programs
have one goal in mind: improving customer
service, both internally and externally. This
is just the beginning of automated solutions
being developed to allow our operations
departments to work more effectively and
efficiently.
