Introduction 

There is fantastic food and drink in Wirral, and this guide provides you with an 

introduction to some of the best places to eat and drink on the Peninsula. In recent 

years Wirral’s food and drink industry has gone from strength to strength. There 

have been many successes, to name a few: 

Michelin-star Restaurant Fraiche in Oxton was declared as having the best 

wine list of any UK restaurant by the ‘Which Good Food Guide’ and named one of 

the 20 best UK restaurants. The Good Food Guide also recognised Italian restaurant 

Da Piero in Irby two years on the run and Peninsula Dining Room in New Brighton 

as ‘Reader’s Favourite’. Richard Fox, Head Chef at The Leverhulme, Port Sunlight was 

named Wirral ‘Chef of the Year’ on his first time in the competition. 

Claremont Farm in Bebington is among many quality Wirral producers and 

its farmer - Andrew Pimbley was named ‘Wirral Food Champion’ for his passion in 

farming and promoting local produce. 

Gorge’Us Coffee Shop in Bebington has won ‘Best Cake’ in the Fine Food 

North West Awards for its Victoria Sponge, also winner of the Food North West Gold 

Heart Award along with the Raspberry and Almond Tart. Awards won by Roses Tea 

Rooms in Ness Gardens include the prestigious Taste of England award and it was 

named one of the top 8 places to eat in England by The Times. 

The Wro Lounge, Bar & Loft in West Kirby has not only won ‘Best Bar in 

Merseyside’ twice but also ‘Most Professional Bar Team’ in Wirral. 

There will be food and drink events throughout the year, culminating in the

Wirral’s geography and micro climate means that the fresh food produced is of the 

highest possible quality. The region is especially known for the excellent asparagus 

and watercress grown here. 

Local farmers and food producers have taken their passion and commitment 

for excellent fresh food and created new innovative ways for everyone to experience 

delicious produce. Enjoy an afternoon out at Church Farm Organics in Thurstaston 

with all the family (winner of Wirral’s ‘Family Friendly Business’ tourism award for 

two years running), or spend the day learning how to cook at Claremont Farm’s 

kitchen and at The Vegi-Table in Bebington. Claremont Farm also plays host to the 

Wirral Food and Drink Festival, which draws thousands every year over the August 

Bank Holiday. 

Wirral features markets selling a wide range of quality produce; both locals and 

visitors enjoy Birkenhead Market and the Wirral Farmers’ Market time and time again. 

Boosting the drinks industry in Wirral are microbreweries such as Brimstage 

Brewery and Peerless Brewery who produce a range of popular beers sold locally.

Fresh organic produce and a fun family 

attraction can be found at the 60-acre 

Church Farm. Minutes from the beautiful 

Wirral Country Park, Church Farm 

Organics is ideal for a family day out. 

Church Farm grows organic produce 

that is among the best in the UK. Extra 

special is the award-winning asparagus 

(winner of Best Fruit or Vegetable at the 

North West Fine Food Awards). 

Church Farm is home to one of the 

only organic asparagus fields in the UK. 

Farmed every morning during the short 

season (May-June), the asparagus can be 

found in the shop later that day. Grower, 

Jonny Bentley, was highly commended in 

the Wirral Food Champion category at 

the Wirral Tourism Awards, for growing 

the crops and teaching visitors about 

organic farming. 

The shop champions other local and 

organic suppliers and stocks a wide 

variety of organic, luxury and unusual 

groceries. A trained butcher is on site 

every Friday and Saturday, and Munch 

coffee shop serves light meals and coffees 

throughout the day. 

Church Farm runs family events 

throughout the year, such as the Easter 

Egg Hunt and Santa Experience, whilst 

the chilling Scareshow is a must-see for 

adults and children alike at Halloween. 

As winner of the Wirral Tourism 

Family Friendly Award two years running, 

Church Farm has a lot to offer families. 

Weekend activities include tractor rides, 

goat feeding and guinea pig cuddling. 

Other attractions include the pedal go-kart 

track, adventure playground, animal trail 

and plank maze. Parties and school visits 

are catered for and are extremely popular.

The award-winning Wirral Farmers’ 

Market in New Ferry attracts locals and 

visitors who are impressed by the local 

produce available and the excellent value 

for money. 

The market continually offers new 

produce; from traditional produce of 

meats (such as Welsh black beef, free 

range chicken, and ostrich), fruit, 

vegetables and seafood to farm shop 

produce such as smoked meat and fish, 

speciality sausages, Lancashire and 

Cheshire cheeses, olive oil, Wirral honey 

and preserves. There are locally prepared 

foods, including a range of international 

home-baked meals, fresh pasta, local 

beers, cakes, handmade puddings and 

artisan chocolates. 

This impressive market of over 30 

stalls is run by volunteers who are 

passionate about quality produce while 

giving to local charities and groups. 

The café and hog roast stall offers a 

shopping break to meet up with friends.

Birkenhead Market, set in the heart of the 

town, is one of the UK’s premier markets 

and boasts over 300 stalls, including two 

nationally acclaimed fishmongers. 

There has been a market in Birkenhead 

since 1835. In 1974, fire at the market 

marked the end of an era, but the clock was 

saved, now taking pride of place in the main 

entrance at the new market. Offering the best 

of both worlds, Birkenhead Market has both 

a modern and spacious indoor market as well 

as a friendly, traditional outdoor market. 

Niche trades with local goods and 

produce ensures a truly Wirral 

experience and one that is as diverse and 

popular as ever. A collectors centre, dance 

shop, martial arts equipment, reiki 

specialist and chinese herbalist are a few 

of the many stalls woven into the fabric 

of food, household and clothing shops, 

providing a unique shopping experience 

that other shopping centres cannot match.

Based at Claremont Kitchen is The Vegi- 

Table, a cookery school which celebrates 

vegetarian and vegan cooking. Claremont 

Kitchen is the perfect home for The Vegi- 

Table, as it overlooks 250 acres of 

farmland devoted to cereals, vegetables 

and fruit, ideal for Mo and Sarah to share 

their passion for healthy cooking. 

The Vegi-Table courses are excellent 

for vegetarians, but meat-eaters will learn 

how to make vegetables exciting, learn 

about healthy cooking, how to make 

delicious meals and accompaniments. 

The courses are informal and fun 

providing a variety of cookery techniques, 

and using many different ingredients. 

There are practical workshops based 

around techniques like ‘Slicing and 

Dicing’, where you not only learn how to 

use your knife correctly but also to make 

dishes like hearty Tuscan bean soup. 

Other workshops include Pizza Pasta 

Pesto and Just Bread, where you learn the 

art of making bread from basic dough to 

Turkish flat bread. 

Alternatively, opt for the ‘mix and 

match’ courses which combine being 

hands-on in the kitchen with 

demonstrations. The most popular 

courses are the Taste of Summer Veg or 

the Taste of Winter Veg. In the summer 

find out how to make the most of the 

summer produce; from courgette cake 

and super-stuffed tomatoes, to courgette 

and feta fritters. During the winter 

experiment with recipes for traditional 

British winter vegetables. You will be 

shown side dishes such as cauliflower a la 

Greque, celeriac soup, red cabbage and 

pomegranate, as well as how to make a 

perfect parsnip tarte tartin, and delicious 

carrot and cashew pate.

Farmed by the Pimbley family for four 

generations, Claremont Farm is home to 

innovative fresh food and experiences. It 

is home to Wirral’s Food Champion, 

Andrew Pimbley, who is passionate about 

quality Wirral produce and welcoming 

visitors to the farm. 

Visit the farm shop to sample 

Claremont’s home-grown delights such 

as their famous asparagus (especially 

May-June), potatoes, strawberries, 

brassicas and seasonal berries. The shop 

also sells meat, poultry, fish, game, 

cheeses and fresh puddings. 

Bank Holiday August sees the Wirral 

Food and Drink Festival - a two day food 

and drink celebration. Growing in strength 

every year, the festival has the finest food 

producers in England and North Wales 

exhibiting. The main demonstration 

stage hosts local chefs preparing food and 

culinary theatre. Visit the large beer and 

cider tent for brews from Wirral’s 

microbreweries, live music, an international 

food court and family entertainment. 

Claremont Farm is home to ‘Claremont 

Kitchen’ hosting cookery courses using 

produce from the field. Wirral’s own 

Masterchef winner, Claire Lara, will be 

running a range of courses and ‘The Vegi- 

Table’ provides unique vegetarian courses. 

Other events include asparagus evenings, 

chocolate, cheese and sausage making 

courses. Free Welly Walks are offered to 

schools or social groups, which include 

harvesting produce and wildlife spotting.

Wirral Watercress, in Childer Thornton, 

produces tender stem watercress that can 

be picked and appear on your plate within 

a few hours. It is supplied to chefs, farm 

shops, retail outlets and food festivals 

across Wirral and the wider region. 

Other crops, including rocket and 

microsalads, are also available. 

Peter Jones is a third generation 

market gardener, and is passionate about 

quality produce and experimenting with 

new crops. Peter has also run small scale 

trials for local chefs looking for ‘that 

something different’. 

Both the watercress and the 

peashoots have been highly commended 

in the North West Fine Foods Awards 

and Wirral Watercress has received the 

prestigious Merseyside Producer of the

Ward’s Fish has retailed the finest, freshest

Gorge ‘Us excels in simple, delicious

5.30am every morning and using locally

Treat yourself to Ceri’s light and fluffy 

Victoria sponge, filled with fruit jam and 

cream - winner of ‘Best Cake’ in the Fine 

Food North West Awards, or choose from 

the delectable carrot cake, award-winning 

raspberry and almond tart, coffee and 

walnut cake, chocolate cake or flapjacks. Ceri 

ensures that there is at least one gluten-free 

cake, often a buttercream cupcake. Why not 

accompany that cake with a cappuccino or 

a pot of traditional English Tea? For the 

ultimate treat, traditional afternoon tea is 

served on a tiered stand, with linen

Breakfasts and lunches are prepared
