History

In the 1960s Carnaby became the 

epicentre of what is famously known as 

‘Swinging London’. 

No shopping street in the world can 

boast such a real connection with music 

and popular culture quite like Carnaby 

Street. Music and fashion have walked 

hand in hand ever since the young 

entrepreneur John Stephen opened his 

first boutique here in 1958. It became 

a mecca for the new Mods, into their 

sharp threads. John Lennon, The Who, 

The Kinks, Mick Jagger and Jimi Hendrix 

were all regular visitors. Now that’s 

rock ‘n’ roll, and we like it. 

Carnaby was not only a place where 

musicians came to shop, they came to hang 

out and play in clubs like The Roaring 

Twenties (now Ben Sherman) and The 

Bag O Nails (where Paul McCartney met 

Linda Eastman). In the 1980s, Carnaby 

saw legendary club nights Mud Club and 

Batcave alongside the HQs of iconic 

music magazines NME and Smash Hits, 

with Boy George working in a shop in the 

Newburgh Quarter. 

No wonder Liam Gallagher chose Carnaby 

Street as the flagship location for his 

Pretty Green brand, alongside other 

music focused brands Dr Martens, Fred 

Perry, Converse, Puma and The Great 

Frog who makes jewellery for the likes of 

Iron Maiden, Lady Gaga and The Arctic 

Monkeys. 

Music is simply built into the very 

fabric of the area. 2013 will celebrate 

Carnaby’s music connections with a series 

of events.
