University as well as being the Director of Emerging Technologies in Kelley’s
executive education.
Dave White manages the Technology Assisted Lifelong Learning unit at the
University of Oxford. He has worked on many projects funded by the Joint
Information’s Systems Committee (JISC) assessing how individuals and groups
engage with new forms of technology. This led to the development of the
‘Visitors and Residents’ typology of online engagement (White and Le Cornu,
2011). He was Principal Investigator for the Open Habitat project which
explored small groups’ use of online virtual worlds such as Second Life . The
project generated the theory of ‘Eventedness’ (White and Le Cornu, 2010),
which details the compelling nature of presence in immersive online environments
and how this relates to notions of belonging. He has also undertaken
research into the World of Warcraft massively multiplayer online game with a
particular focus on how the game’s social architecture draws individuals into
ever more demanding roles, ultimately encouraging the formation of communities
and a ‘professional’ attitude towards the game.
Peter Whitton has worked in UK Higher Education since 2001. Over this
period he has had various roles supporting the use of technology for teaching
and learning including time spent in design and development, project management,
and academic development. Before working in HE, Peter spent 12 years
as a commercial designer working for clients in the retail and financial services
sectors. Peter’s research interests include the use of multimedia for teaching,
collaborative learning, and the potential of game spaces as learning environments.
He is currently a Learning Technology Adviser at the University of
Salford.
