CISM Education Associates, LLC is a private
company dedicated to the prevention and mitigation
of disabling stress by providing education, training,
and resource services to emergency service
personnel and mental health providers; and provides
consultation in the establishment of crisis and disaster
response teams for various organizations and
communities. Our associates conduct educational
and training programs in critical incident stress
management and crisis intervention techniques. All
CISM courses are recognized by the International
Critical Incident Stress Foundation, Inc. Other related
crisis intervention/ trauma courses are be conducted
by this company. The courses are interactive allowing
the participants to discuss their experiences as they
relate to the training. Our instructors, who represent
the various emergency service professions and
mental health, blend real-life experiences into their
teaching to give the participants a better understanding
of the effects of traumatic events on
emergency service providers and other victims.
The Associates have responded to such events as
the World Trade Center terrorist attacks of 1993 and
2001, the crash of Flight 800, the Texas gas line
explosion in Edison, Hurricane Katrina, and many

of NJ) is a not-for-profit corporation established to
assist emergency service personnel who have been
involved in a critical incident by providing at no cost
crisis intervention and stress management services
including psycho-education, support, and information
in an effort to return the person(s) to their pre-incident
level of functioning. The member teams are available

What is Critical Incident Stress (CIS)?
Critical Incident Stress occurs when a person or
group of people experience an event that causes
unusually strong emotional reactions that have the
potential to interfere with a person’s ability to function
at the scene of an emergency or in their daily routine.
It can last for days, weeks, or even months after the
event. Critical incident stress is a normal reaction by
normal people to an abnormal event.
Course Description and Objectives
The Basic Group Crisis Intervention course is
designed to present the core elements of a
comprehensive, systematic and multi-component
crisis intervention curriculum. The two-day course
prepares participants to understand a wide range of
crisis intervention services including pre-/postincident
crisis education, on-scene support services,
crisis intervention for individuals, CMB’s and
demobilizations after large scale traumatic incidents,
and small group defusings and debriefings (CISD).
The need for appropriate follow-up services and
referrals is also described. Considerable evidence
gathered to date strongly supports the multicomponent
crisis intervention strategy which is
described in this course.
The Basic CISM course is designed to specifically
teach crisis intervention and emergency mental health
skills such as demobilizations, defusings, and CISD.
At the completion of this course, participants will be
able to: understand stress reactions, recognize some
signs and symptoms of stress, CIS, and PTSD; list
the ten basic interventions of CISM; and to describe
in detail the CISM group processes of
demobilizations, defusings, debriefings.
Your Instructors:
Raymond F. Hanbury, Ph.D., A.B.P.P., a partner in
CISM Education Associates, LLC, is a licensed
psychologist with a private practice in Manasquan,
N.J. He is the state clinical director and Board
member of the NJ Crisis Intervention Response
Network, Inc.; and a consultant to the N.J. Division of
Mental Health. Dr. Hanbury is a Fellow, Diplomate,
and Board Certified with the American Academy of
Experts in Traumatic Stress and is a police
psychologist. He is on the faculty of Mt. Sinai School
of Medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson School 0f
Medicine. An ICISF instructor, Dr. Hanbury has
authored and co-authored numerous articles in this
field and has presented nationally.
Eric S. Rice, B.A., the Managing Partner of CISM
Education Associates, LLC, is a detective with the
Howell Township Police Department and is Executive
Director of the NJ Crisis Intervention Response
Network, Inc. Det. Rice is a N.J. Police Training
Commission certified instructor and is the EMS
Training Coordinator at the Monmouth County Police
Academy. His experience includes more than 39
years as a volunteer EMS provider, firefighter, and an
EMT instructor. Det. Rice is an FBI trained
Crisis/Hostage Negotiator, is the chief negotiator for
the Monmouth County Emergency Response Team,
and is an ICISF instructor.
James C. Schatzle, B.S., a partner in CISM
Education Associates, LLC, is a paramedic, and
President of T.E.A.M. LIFE, an EMS training,
education, and management company. Mr. Schatzle’s
experience includes more than 25 years as a
volunteer firefighter and EMS provider. He is an EMT
instructor; an ICISF instructor; and is Chairman of the
Board of the NJ Crisis Intervention Response
Network, Inc. Mr. Schatzle is also on the faculty of
the Seton Hall University Graduate School of Medical
Education. He has published several articles on

emergency medical services and has presented at
the World Congress on Critical Incident Stress.
