Drinking water pipeline for Services Industriels de
Genève in Geneva, Switzerland
Client:
Services Industriels de Genève, Geneva and KFS Service de Canalisation SA, Payerne
Year of construction:
2013
Type of construction measure:
Renewal of a DN 500 drinking water pipeline in Cologny in Switzerland, along Lake Geneva
Our services:
• Delivery of a flexible high-pressure pipeline Primus Line ® and the Primus Line connector
• Installation of the Primus Line ® system
Situation:
The pipeline DN 500 to be renewed lies in the municipality of Cologny, which is connected with Geneva. The
pipeline is laid along Lake Geneva, and lies parallel to the Quai de Cologny road in Geneva or Cologny in the
grass verge along the promenade. The pipeline sections to be renewed were determined by the client as l = 32
+ 238 + 25 + 245 + 245 + 260 + 20 + 120 + 320 and 210 m. The aim of the measure was to execute construction
work whilst intervening as little as possible with the promenade and the tree population. The aim was also
to connect the DN 500 pipeline to the network again after the shortest possible construction period. Due to these
requirements, Services Industriels de Genève decided on space-saving and fast pipeline renewal using the
Primus Line ® system. In accordance with the order, Primus Line ® had to permit an operating pressure of 16 bar
in the drinking water pipeline. In order to guarantee this operating pressure, a single layer
Primus Line DN 500 high-pressure hose was pulled into all pipeline sections.

Technical Details:
PN 16 bar
Primus Line ® System:
Flexible high-pressure pipeline DN 500 PN 16 bar (single layer)
Total Length:
1,715 m
Number of Construction Sections: 10 installation sections with l = 32 + 238 + 25 + 245 + 245 + 260 +
20 + 120 + 320 and 210 m
Installation Time:
Installation of the Primus Line ® system in a total of 10 working days
Rehabilitation System:
Services Industriels de Genève, Geneva (Switzerland) decided on the installation of the
Primus Line ® system by Rädlinger. Primus Line ® is a flexible high-pressure pipeline which is coated with plastics,
and can be manufactured at Primus Line‘s own plant to seamless lengths of up to 4500 m. The available
test certificates according to the DVGW W270 (German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water)
and the KTW (Plastics in Potable Water) regulations also permit application of the system for the renewal
of drinking water pipelines.
The Primus Line DN 500 high-pressure hose for drinking water with a single layer construction, which is
installed in the pipeline, is able to withstand pipeline operating pressures of up to 16 bar.
Project Description:
The DN 500 pipeline was blocked off and disconnected from the drinking water network. In preparation for the
pipeline renewal, construction pits were created by KFS Service de Canalisation, the DN 500 pipes and fittings
were removed from the pits and the entire pipeline was subjected to a TV inspection. Existing incrustations and
deposits in the host pipe were removed with water by KFS Service de Canalisation using ultra-high pressure
cleaning equipment. The Primus Line DN 500 PN 16 hose was prefolded at the company headquarters in
Cham, and coiled in accordance with the individual renewal sections onto drums of l = 2.40 m and l = 4.00 m,
delivered on trucks to the construction site and pulled into the existing DN 50 pipe.
Due to the folding technology used and the related reduction of insertion forces for Primus Line ® , the DN 500
hoses could be pulled into the renewal sections from l = 20 m to l = 320 m with a maximum tensile force of
17 kN. The permitted insertion forces for the Primus Line DN 500 high-pressure hose total 100 kN.
After assembly of the Primus Line connector and the installation of the adapter pieces in the construction
pits, the renewed pipeline area was subjected to a leak test supervised by KFS in accordance with the Swiss
standards.
Renewal of the pipeline was successfully completed with the disinfection, a flushing procedure and then the
connection of the Primus Line ® pipeline to the existing network.
Due to the selected form of renewal, it was possible to restore the supply security with drinking water within a
very short construction period and without major interventions to the promenade.
