FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY...
Maryland Elections
As you read this newsletter, the November election
is one month away. I’m not going to use this article to
tell you how to vote, but I did want you to be aware
that there are important questions on the ballot -
aside from choosing to re-elect President Obama or
elect Mitt Romney.
In the state of Maryland there will be 7 questions on the ballot - 3
of which are controversial. We will be asked to support legislation
already passed to allow same sex marriages, to support building a
casino at the National Harbor in Prince George’s County, and to allow
children of undocumented immigrants (those children who have
been raised and educated in our public schools) to pay in-state tuition
at Maryland public colleges and universities. All of these questions
are quite controversial and they require a lot of background
study and soul searching.
Each of these questions reflects Jewish concepts as well. Jewish
tradition has a lot to say about homosexuality, about welcoming the
stranger and about gambling. The question is, do we vote according
to our Jewish conscience or do we vote according to what’s best for
Maryland? We all have different ideas about what’s good for Maryland,
and we could also have different ideas about what Judaism has
to say on these issues. The question is which values are more important
in answering these ballot questions? Do we vote based on
our religion, or do we vote based on our citizenship?
A popular example of this dilemma is a presidential candidate’s
position vis a vis Israel. I know people who will vote solely on that
issue - if the candidate is strong on Israel then the candidate will get
that person’s vote. I think that’s wrong. Though it is important to
support Israel - don’t get me wrong! - we live in America. We should
choose a president based on our opinion on how education, the
economy, health care, and a host of other issues are supported.
Those should be the determining factors.
But regarding these ballot questions, the issue is different. We are
not being asked to support a candidate; we are being asked to support
an issue. Now it is more complex because we are Jews and we
are Marylanders. We want what is in our best interest for the State,
yet what we want is based on our value system. Our value system -
our identity - should be comprised of Jewish and civic ethical and
moral ideas. In these ballot questions those appropriately overlap
and we can make our decision based on that combination.
To help us better understand the Jewish perspective on these ballot
questions, I’ll be devoting my first Taste of Judaism program on
Shabbat morning October 27 from 11-Noon on these issues. See the
flyer on page 8 in this Shofar for all the dates of the Taste of Judaism
programs.
FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK
As you read this, the High Holiday season of Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur will have ended. I am
hoping each and every one of you is blessed with a
happy and healthy year to come. But not to worry,
we have several most enjoyable simchas and historic
holidays on the Shaare Tefila calendar for us
all to enjoy together this coming month.
First, on the evening of October 1 we welcome the holiday of
Sukkot. This is one of my favorite holidays when we get to simulate
a camping experience in a temporary tent-like structure. It is
a very social holiday as we enjoy prayer, discussion, and good
food with many guests and friends beyond our own family.
During the coming weeks we will also celebrate with Stephanie
and Perry Buckberg, and Ann-Joy and Stan Lieberman, as their
sons Jonas Buckberg (Oct. 13) and Joshua Lieberman (Oct. 20)
each become a Bar Mitzvah. They are all most valued members of
our congregation so please join me in wishing them a hearty
mazel tov on these milestones.
But the holiday that I most want to call your attention to is Simchat
Torah. On Simchat Torah it is our tradition at Shaare Tefila to
honor two special members of our congregation to whom we owe
considerable debt and gratitude. This year our honorees are Past
President Bess Teller and long-time Board Member and Officer
Judy Bresler.
Bess served the last four years as our President, guiding us
through the “diaspora” from Lockwood Drive to our new homeland.
Without her leadership and tireless commitment we would
not be in the place we find ourselves today.
Judy has been a Board member for many years and now serves
as our Recording Secretary. Her counsel and guidance as an attorney
have enabled us to make many quality decisions over the last
many years. And it was Judy’s childhood house, and old office of
Dr. Arthur Bresler, where we called home for over 5 years while
we were in the wilderness after selling our Lockwood Drive building.
Join us as we celebrate with our Torahs, and honor our devoted
congregants, Bess Teller and Judy Bresler.
David Ronis
YOUTH GROUP NEWS FLASH!
We are so excited to have held our first two
successful programs for the Bonim and Machar
youth groups, on September 9 and September
23. Our kickoff program was a pizza party, ice
breaker games, and ice-cream sundaes, ending with a parent
information and registration session. On September 23,
following Tashlich, we held our youth programs for Bonim
and Machar at Lake Needwood. Both programs were well
attended and much enjoyed by the participants.
We are off to a great start and I look forward to watching
both groups grow strong over the year ahead. Bonim
(Building) and Machar (Tomorrow) youth groups provide a
warm and nurturing environment where children of similar
age groups can get together for programs and activities that
focus on fun, socializing, and developing lasting friendships
within our synagogue community.
The leadership of Bonim and Machar Youth Groups is a
partnership between our Youth Commission Chair, Stefanie
Levy; our Family, Youth and Special Programs Coordinator,
Lisa Arber; our youth group parents; and our youth. We
thank Bryan Goodman for being the parental support for our
Bonim group and Elaine Silver for being the parental support
for our Machar group. We are also pleased that Melissa
Felzenberg, from the Membership Committee, will be
able to help support our youth groups this year. Activities
and programs will take place either on-site at Shaare Tefila
Congregation or off-site at designated locations in the Maryland
suburban community and/or DC.
Most activities for both groups will take place on Sunday
afternoons from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm. Some activities
may take place on Saturday evenings. Membership in the
Bonim and Machar youth groups requires that you fill out a
Membership Form and Medical Information/Release Form
and that you pay a $25.00 membership fee per child. This
fee will be used to offset administrative costs, help with upkeep
of our Youth Lounge, provide snacks at youth programs,
and, as available, lower the costs related to certain
activities throughout the year.
Being part of a Jewish youth group, from a young age,
helps to provide a strong sense of Jewish identity. . Youth
group members will have the opportunity to continue their
youth group involvement, beyond Machar, by joining Kadima
and USY in their preteen and teen years. In Kadima and
USY our youth further strengthen their Jewish identity and
develop important leadership skills essential to their continued
involvement in the Jewish community. I am looking forward
to a great year for our youth groups and also looking
forward to our first Family Program on Sunday, October
21st at Larriland Farm, in Howard County, where we will go
on a family hayride and have a community campfire. Look
for more information in the Daf, List-serv messages, fliers
and group e-mails. Please contact the following individuals
if you have questions about our Bonim and Machar youth
programs.
My Dear Shaare Tefila family,
The holidays are almost over and so it is time
not just to think about our resolutions, but to put
them into action! We will try new things, we
will implement the revised family chore list, we
will stop procrastinating, we will make time for ourselves,
we will get to the gym, and we will be open to having new
experiences! Nothing will stop us! Not even ourselves! So,
in this time of renewal and rededication, I have decided to
change the direction of my Shofar articles. Much of the time
my articles have been about something holiday related.
This year my goal will be to educate and inspire all of our
community to LOVE Jewish music and prayer of ALL
kinds! So, I will be alternating between “These Are a Few of
My Favorite Prayers,” “Ask the Cantor,” and “Cantor Wendi’s
Top 10.”
In “These Are a Few of My Favorite Prayers,” I will
tell you all about the journey of the prayer I’ve chosen
for the month. We will learn the whole story of its birth,
its travels, the different times and styles of music the
prayer lived through, and finally, where we can find the
prayer now.
In “Ask the Cantor,” I will invite you all to write in
and pose any question you have been dying to ask about
chazzanot, prayer, Jewish music, Hebrew, chanting our
holy texts, or anything else of that nature.
In “Cantor Wendi’s Top 10,” I will be exposing you
to Jewish music from all over the world and a variety of
genres. Within this column I will recommend different
groups, singers, musicians, and the like to listen to and
expand your Jewish music world. Anything from Jewish
rock, Yiddish music, Klezmer, Yemenite, classical,
chazzanut and more will be highlighted. I will also include
sound bites and suggestions for recordings to listen
to online.
So, stay tuned for my first column in November! In the
meantime, enjoy the rest of your holidays and go out there
and try something new… Make this a year to remember!
FROM SISTERHOOD-
Welcome to the New Year. Sisterhood
sends you our hearty wishes for a contented
healthy Yom Tov filled October. It's a
tradition for us to reflect on our past
months. This certainly is a great way to
usher in the New Year.
Think about last year, when we were all sitting together at
our first Friday night dinner, lovingly and efficiently cooked
and catered by our Sisterhood ( thanks also to a few spouses).
Now zoom in to our first of many Simchas of the year -
celebrating with gusto the 90th birthday of our very dear May
Savage and the B'nai Mitzvah of the Winkler siblings, Eli and
Leah. Again, we all celebrated together over a delightfully filling,
gorgeous looking kiddush. Now we are fully established in
our well stocked kitchen, with a cadre of excellent hard working
kiddush captains and congregation helpers. Remember,
when Florence Lipsky calls to let you know it will be your
week to assist in the kitchen, please say yes immediately. Be
on time (9:30) and plan to stay until the end of the kiddush
which means through cleanup.
But that is not all Sisterhood does. By now you've no doubt
received the mailing that we sent to you last month. If you still
need one, please contact Ethel Levine to have it sent to you.
Our Paid Up Membership Dinner is slated for October
22. Our topic will be The Mitzvah of Organ Donation. Thanks
to Bernice Goldstein for coming up with the program. Bernice's
sister-in-law, Nancy Ginsburg, Rabbi Layman, Stefanie
Levy and Lee Ronis will all be giving their personal perspective
on this vital topic. Our committee is chaired by Karen
Gross and Susan Hysen and they would welcome your volunteer
help with the evening so please contact them and let them
know how you would like to assist with this fabulous evening.
Now that we have your attention, take the time this minute
to send your membership dues and reservation to Elaine
Stein. We look forward to having you join us.
When shopping for your holiday needs, please remember to
use scrip. The proceeds are given to the shul so the more you
buy, the more we can give. It is a painless way to help with
financially supporting our shul.
It is a tradition to make a toast to welcome in the New Year,
complete with hopes, aspirations, and wishes for good health
and peace in Israel and contentment here. Consider this your
L'Chaim and Shana Tova from us to all of you and yours.
I have had a strong request to reinstate the Humor Column, a
page of jokes and stories provided by congregants and their
friends. Would you be willing to see a page, or a column, of humorous
items, somewhat similar to what was offered under one of
our former editors, Susan Goldsamt?
Thanks to All of You,
There were several wonderful folks who brought food to
our house during my shivah for my mother, of blessed
memory. I was not able to determine who all the bearers of
you to tell you how much it meant to me and my family.
Please understand and accept my apology for not acknowledging
your support individually by letter. This community
is so warm and consoling I cannot express it adequately.
GATES OF DISCOVERY-
ROSE AND GEORGE TELLER PRESCHOOL:
“THE BENEFITS OF MULTI-AGE CLASSROOMS”
This year, we have decided to organize our students
into multi-age classes rather than the more traditional
age-based classes. Multi-age education is the purposeful
placing of children of different ages (and abilities) in the same
classroom. This practice has been shown to assist the overall development
of the child within a family-like community of learners.
Multi-age education is rooted in the philosophy that every child has
the right to learn at his or her own pace, that learning is a continuum
rather than a series of steps and that students learn from each
other, not just from the adults in their lives. Goodlad and Anderson,
who introduced the modern notion of the non-graded elementary
school in 1959, raised our awareness of the fact that age is a crude
indicator of what learning experiences children are ready for.
By including different age groups, students naturally become
more accepting of one another’s differences. There is an atmosphere
of nurturing and support rather than of pressure to fit within
an arbitrary norm. Lillian Katz, one of the leading early childhood
educators of our time, shows that children in multi-age classrooms
often have a greater sense of belonging and more positive social
relationships and attitudes toward school than children in sameage
classrooms. Children of varying ages and developmental capabilities
work and play alongside one another. They interact with
similar materials in different ways. Both younger and older children
are able to benefit through these interactions.
Multi-age grouping resembles family structures. In a family,
younger members are given the opportunity to observe, emulate,
and imitate a wide range of skills. Older family members have the
opportunity to offer leadership and assume responsibility for the
less mature and less knowledgeable members. Multi-age grouping
differs from the family in that it offers the opportunity to assume
each of these roles in different activities. Given that most children
vary in competency across skills, this approach affords each child
an opportunity to interact with peers and materials at an appropriate
developmental level in all areas of development. Sometimes
another child can word a concept in a way that an adult can't, facilitating
better understanding for both children involved.
In the classroom family, children can practice and develop leadership
skills without the competitiveness sometimes found in sameage
groups. Because of the diversity of social knowledge in the
multi-age classroom, cooperation and other forms of positive social
behavior marked by caring rather than competitiveness are often
fostered. Older children are encouraged to aid others in their learning
and remind younger children of rules. Research by Joan
Gaustad shows that these behaviors enhance the self-regulation of
the older children. They may also create opportunities for more
complex pretend play on the part of the younger children.
Multi-age classrooms also allow children to excel. With higher
level materials on hand, and an infrastructure already in place to
differentiate the instruction, higher functioning students can work at
their own pace with no limitations.
Overall, mixed age classrooms foster a caring and cooperative
environment where children are encouraged to grow at their own
developmental pace. Students in multi-age classrooms show increased
self-esteem, more cooperative behavior, better attitudes
toward school in general, increased pro-social (caring, tolerant,
patient, supportive) behavior, enriched personal responsibility, and
a decline in discipline problems.
and philosophy, please visit:
CHAVAYA:
At Chavaya this year we are advancing in several
areas. We are implementing a new tefila program.
We will pray together as a school on Sunday
mornings. Classes will rotate leading different
prayers, giving the younger students an opportunity to practice
in a supportive environment. Older students will develop
mastery and confidence as they work their way through the
Siddur. Tefila will begin with a spirited Havdalah service. Additionally,
teachers will rotate presenting a Weekly Jewish
Fact. This may be a closer look at one part of a prayer,
something in the sanctuary, or a moment in Jewish History.
Be sure to ask your children about this when you pick them
up at 12:00.
We will now be using the main sanctuary as our prayer
space. While this may seem obvious to some (why wouldn’t
you pray in the sanctuary?), using that space has tradeoffs.
As you already know, our classrooms are located downstairs
in the Education Wing of the building. In order to pray in the
sanctuary we have to walk upstairs every week, using precious
minutes of our limited time together. Taking a broader
view, however, we see that one of our goals at Chavaya is
that our children feel at home in the synagogue, whether for
Shabbat, holiday, or weekday services. The most beautiful
space in our building can also be a place to learn about prayer,
to become well versed in the Torah traditions, indeed a
place to grow up in. I fully expect our Chavaya students to
act with maturity and respect while in a Makom Tefila (a
place of prayer). Religious School is a conduit to inspire our
students through knowledge, passion, belief and actions.
Entrusting the holiest space in our building to our children for
prayer and Jewish learning demonstrates to them our expectations
that they will be the Jewish leaders of the future.
Meet Our Bar Mitzvah - Jonas Buckberg
Jonas Buckberg will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on October 13 at Shaare Tefila.
Jonas is in the 8 th grade at Rosa Parks Middle School where he excels. He enjoys cars, sports,
hard rock music and traveling. Jonas has taken voice and guitar lessons at different times and
earned his Purple Belt in Tae Kwon Do. Jonas is a serious Redskins fan.
He likes spending time with his extended family who live nearby (and some far) and is very excited
to see many friends and family who will be coming from near and far to celebrate with him.
Meet our Bar Mitzvah, Joshua Lieberman
Joshua will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on October 20, 2010 at Shaare Tefila.
Joshua is an 8th grade student at Rosa Parks Middle School. He enjoys playing sports such as football and golf, and
spending time with his family. Joshua began studying martial arts at the age of 5 and currently holds a 1 st degree black
belt.
When Joshua was in 6 th grade, he began playing the French horn. As a 7 th grader, he was selected from a competitive
tryout to play for the Strathmore Young Artists Orchestra.
For his Bar Mitzvah project, Joshua will perform a concert playing his French horn to raise money for the Homeward
Trails Rescue Shelter from where the first family dog, Bailey, was rescued. Having a close relationship with his family is
important to Joshua. He is especially close with his sister, Lianna, and his cousins, Adam and Mandi. With family and
friends coming from New York, Florida, Chicago, and California, Joshua is excited to share this milestone of his journey as a Jewish adult.
of Song evenings this coming year with two of these special
evenings being hosted by Shaare Tefila Congregation.
Dear Shofar Readers
This is to tell our congregation about a wonderful experience
our marvelous Sisterhood members presented last month.
Our very own Betty Balin and Vivienne Auerbach are to be
congratulated on their arts and crafts program. They shlepped
an ironing board and iron, paints, and trays among other items
for this class.
As their students we benefited by taking home lovely items that
beautify our Jewish homes. I thank them for their lessons and
the good time well spent. I look forward to being their student
again.
Did you Know…?
SO, what did you do this summer?
Al Kliman's granddaughter Shoshie graduated
from high school up in Newton, MA. this past
June and is now getting ready to go to UMD, where she will
be enrolled in the engineering program.
The Buckbergs, Stephanie, Perry,et al, went to Israel,
and had a marvelous time. Ask them about their trip.
We are delighted that Florence Gersug Lipsky is out of the
hospital and back with us. We saw her at the September Friday
Night Back-to-Shul dinner and she looked wonderful.
Way to go Florence!
Check out our October Bar Mitzvahs (found elsewhere in
this issue). It is delightful to observe these young people and
we look forward to their taking on leadership roles in our
congregation in the future.
Ethel and Ira Levine are planning another tour of duty in
SAR-EL, the Israeli Volunteer Corps, which relieves an Israeli
reservist from having to perform support work .
My column is short this month as I have received very few
news flashes from you all. Hopefully, I will hear from you
after the Holy Days.
YOUR MEMBERSHIP IS THE CORNERSTONE OF OUR
EFFORTS
MEMBERSHIP in MERCAZ is important to support Conservative
[Masorti] congregations in Israel and around the Jewish
world. Right now, the only religious institutions which
were and still are recognized and funded by the Israeli government
are Orthodox institutions. If it can grow stronger membership
numbers, MERCAZ will have stronger voting clout in
the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency for Israel,
which can then translate into significant Jewish communal
funding for our Conservative/Masorti congregations in Israel
and worldwide.
YOU can join MERCAZ by using your congregation’s MER-
CAZ check-off membership mechanism.
