The annual VM & Display Show<br />

creative. We explore the key<br />

trends driving growth in this<br />

highly competitive sec<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

Beauty retailing is flourishing.<br />

Despite the global economic gloom,<br />

the sec<strong>to</strong>r remains resilient as<br />

consumers throughout the world<br />

continue <strong>to</strong> invest in health and<br />

beauty products. Drawn by the<br />

relative buoyancy of the market,<br />

competition is high, with new brands<br />

entering the market at an as<strong>to</strong>unding<br />

pace and players within the grocery<br />

market seeking <strong>to</strong> claim further share<br />

of spend.<br />

As brands and retailers battle <strong>to</strong><br />

stand out in-s<strong>to</strong>re, the beauty<br />

retailing landscape has become a<br />

rich source of design innovation.<br />

Workshop in London and Beauty<br />

Bazaar by Harvey Nichols perfectly<br />

illustrate this evolution from product<br />

display <strong>to</strong> product interaction. While<br />

at concession level, the Clinique<br />

Experience Bar comes complete with<br />

product sound effects,<br />

demonstrating how this level of<br />

consumer engagement can be<br />

encouraged even at small scale.<br />

02 Beauty Edit<br />

Choice editing and guidance are also<br />

key areas of design innovation;<br />

appealing <strong>to</strong> consumers who are<br />

often overwhelmed by choice and<br />

pushed for time.<br />

The BeautyMart concept in Harvey<br />

Nichols, along with M&S Your<br />

Beauty, are both key indica<strong>to</strong>rs of this<br />

shift <strong>to</strong>wards a more considered and<br />

curated product offer, purposefully<br />

designed <strong>to</strong> demystify and aid<br />

product choice. NewBeauty at Fred<br />

Segal in Los Angles also presents<br />

products in an edited way, offering a<br />

broad range of handpicked products<br />

that are ‘tried-and-true favourites -<br />

curated by the edi<strong>to</strong>rs and staff at<br />

NewBeauty’.<br />

03 Beauty on-the-run<br />

With many beauty products bought<br />

as a simple repeat purchase, the<br />

emphasis on speed and efficiency is<br />

high. Brands such as Clinique with<br />

their ‘Grab & Go’ format are leading<br />

the way, demonstrating how simple<br />

messaging, signage and intuitive<br />

product display/merchandising can<br />

guide consumers <strong>to</strong> a purchase with<br />

ease.<br />

Beyond the s<strong>to</strong>re, brands and<br />

retailers are experimenting with new<br />

ways of reaching out <strong>to</strong> the<br />

consumer; enabling them <strong>to</strong> shop<br />

anytime, anywhere. Harnessing the<br />

latest advances in digital technology,<br />

the Hamburg drugs<strong>to</strong>re<br />

Budnikowsky launched virtual<br />

shopping posters in several German<br />

cities <strong>to</strong> mark the launch of its first<br />

Aliqua natural cosmetics online<br />

shop. The Quick Response posters<br />

displaying virtual shelves piled high<br />

with natural cosmetics products were<br />

placed in key locations, including<br />

underground and urban railway<br />

stations, enabling consumers <strong>to</strong> use<br />

the QR code <strong>to</strong> order products via<br />

their smartphone.<br />

Beauty Futures<br />

Looking ahead <strong>to</strong> the future of beauty<br />

retailing, many of these trends will<br />

continue <strong>to</strong> evolve as brands and<br />

retailers seek ever more innovative<br />

and original ways of capturing the<br />

consumers’ attention.<br />

Amalio Martinez, the senior<br />

manufacturing foreman at Ormis<strong>to</strong>n<br />

Wire, has retired after an impressive<br />

47 years of service. However,<br />

Amalio will continue <strong>to</strong> work onsite<br />

part-time as a fac<strong>to</strong>ry foreman,<br />

employing the wealth of experience<br />

he has clocked up since joining the<br />

company in 1966.<br />

Grants for EuroShop 2014 increased <strong>to</strong> £1,500<br />

The Government wants us<br />

<strong>to</strong> export and they are<br />

prepared <strong>to</strong> help members<br />

<strong>to</strong> do just that with grants of<br />

£1,500 <strong>to</strong>wards the cost of a<br />

stand at EuroShop. The<br />

advertisement below is an<br />

example of how UKTI will be<br />

promoting its services over<br />

the next few months.<br />

For those of you who are<br />

new <strong>to</strong> our industry,<br />

EuroShop is the largest,<br />

most exciting and best retail<br />

exhibition on the planet.<br />

Here are a few facts. It’s<br />

held every three years in<br />

Düsseldorf, Germany. At<br />

the last event, in 2011, over<br />

2,000 exhibi<strong>to</strong>rs from 53<br />

countries saw 107,000<br />

visi<strong>to</strong>rs, 60% of whom were<br />

from outside Germany. The<br />

next event is in February<br />

2014 and over 1,000<br />

companies have already<br />
