Saturday & Sunday • November 5 & 6, 2011 Cognitive and Perceptual Evaluation: A Function Based Approach & Adult Onset Apraxia and Unilateral Neglect Syndromes: An Overview Course Description This two day course is designed for occupational therapy practitioners and others who provide services to clients who have cognitive-perceptual impairments that impact their ability to perform meaningful activities. Day one will focus on assessments that use relevant occupations to identify underlying impairments that impact task performance. This course is designed for practitioners in multiple practice areas (neuro-rehabilitation, pediatrics, mental health, etc.). Multiple videotape examples will be used for group problem solving. Day two will provide a comprehensive overview of adult-onset apraxia (with a focus on ideational and ideomotor / motor apraxia) and neglect syndromes (with a focus on body and spatial dysfunction). Lecture, discussion, slides, and videotape analysis will be used as teaching strategies. Questions will be entertained throughout the presentation. Specific concepts to be discussed include: applied neuro-anatomy & neurophysiology, neurologic processing models to aid in clinical reasoning, signs and symptoms, differentiating between impairments (ex. primary visual deficits versus neglect; ideational versus motor apraxia; comprehension deficits versus ideational apraxia, etc.), a review of standardized and non-standardized assessments, and a comprehensive review of evidence-based intervention strategies. Educational Objectives At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to: 1. Compare, contrast, and critique the use of pen and paper assessments versus performance-based cognitive-perceptual assessments. 2. Begin to identify the impact of specific impairments (neglect, apraxia, body scheme disorders, spatial dysfunction, agnosia, etc.) while observing daily living skills. 3. Choose and have working knowledge of several standardized assessments including: the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, Assessment of Motor and Process Skills, A-ONE, Behavioral Inattention Test, Kitchen Task Assessment, Executive Function Performance Test, The Kettle Test, Catherine Bergego Scale, etc. 4. Use clinical reasoning skills to interpret errors that occur during ADL and mobility and categorize them according to impairment. 5. Critique present means of assessment. 6. Describe the direct impact of apraxia and neglect on meaningful activities. 7. Utilize diagnostic reasoning strategies based on understanding neurologic processing models. 8. Discuss at least three standardized assessments that can be utilized with those living with apraxia or neglect. 9. Implement evidence based intervention strategies to improve the overall functioning of those living with apraxia or neglect. At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be asked to self-assess the achievement of these educational objectives. . Course Instructor Glen Gillen, EdD, OTR, FAOTA is currently a member of the full-time faculty at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has authored over 50 publications including textbooks, chapters, and peer-reviewed research. Glen is best known in the neuro-rehabilitation community for his contribution to the literature, the textbook Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach now in its third edition and published by Elsevier Science/Mosby. His new book, Cognitive and Perceptual Rehabilitation: Optimizing Function has also recently been published by Elsevier. Glen’s experience spans the continuum of care from acute to long term care. A past recipient of AOTF’s Award for Clinical Excellence in Rehabilitation and AOTA’s Recognition of Achievement Award, Glen lectures extensively on the local, state, national, international, and university level regarding multiple topics related to neuro-rehabilitation. He maintains a clinical caseload working in the areas of acute care and inpatient rehabilitation. He serves on several editorial boards for journals related to physical medicine and rehabilitation.
