MEET CHRISS GOLDEN
TKA VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Temple Kol Ami is fortunate
this year to be able to honor
a woman who has quietly
given of herself time and
again: Chriss Golden.
Chriss has been a member
of TKA for 26 years. Both
her sons, Justin and
Mason, attended and
graduated from our
Religious School. All three
became B’nai Mitzvah at
Kol Ami—Chriss in 1991
and her sons in 1993.
Chriss has served as a Trustee on the General Board
during two separate terms and has been a member of
our Usher Corps at various times. She is currently a
member of the Shiva Corps and TKA Sisterhood. She
wishes she could be more active in Sisterhood, but
rarely gets a chance to participate due to her job as a
Counselor at Walled Lake Northern High School.
Chriss has also sung in our choir for many years—
more than she can recall. Most recently, she has
assumed the role of Choir Director, spending
countless hours preparing the choir to sing for both
High Holidays and Shabbat services.
Thank you, Chriss, for your spirit, your energy, your
dedication, and your skills.
Please join us in honoring Chriss, all of our volunteers and
the new Executive Officers and Board of Trustees on
Friday, June 1st. RSVP for dinner is requested.
SNAP/Food Stamp Challenge
A FOOD STAMP BUDGET FOR 6 DAYS?
JOIN US…AND TAKE THE CHALLENGE
JULY 7-13, 2012
DID YOU KNOW…
• Millions of low-income Americans live on Food Stamps/
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)?
• In 2011, 1 of every 5 people in Michigan received food
stamps?
• The average food stamp benefit in Michigan is $4.50
per day.
• This makes it difficult to avoid hunger, afford nutritious
foods, and stay healthy
Members of Congress, URJ leaders, and
celebrities have embraced the challenge.
Please join Temple Kol Ami members*
and Take the Challenge:
Eat on $4.50/day per person for 6 days
Living Below the Line Challenge Guidelines
1. Join us during the week of July 7 th to July 13 th from
Havdalah until Erev Shabbat. If that week is not
convenient for you, please pick another 6 days. (We
purposely excluded Shabbat)
2. Spend a total of $27 per person for all food and
beverages during the Challenge period. Be sure to
include any fast food or dining out in your budget.
3. During the Challenge, only eat food that you purchase
for the project. Refrain from eating food that you
already own (this does not include spices and
condiments).
4. Avoid accepting free food from friends, family, or at
work, including at receptions, briefings, or other events
where food is served.
5. Keep track of receipts on food spending and take note
of your experiences that week.
6. Invite others to join you, including co-workers,
reporters, chefs, or other elected officials.
The Rest of the deal
Calculate the money that you did not spend on food and
beverage for the week and contribute it to a fund at Temple
that will be donated to a hunger remediation organization
as well as a portion to Nothing But Nets, which has been
our ongoing Tikkun Olam project for the last several years.
You will be able to join the Challenge on line as well as
blog about the experience through a portal on the TKA
Website. The blog will also be our group support and
information exchange for the project. More information can
be found at
http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5118/p/salsa/web/
common/public/content?content_item_KEY=10037
While living on a food stamp budget for just a week cannot
come close to the struggles encountered by low-income
families week after week and month after month, those who
take the Challenge gain a new perspective of what it
means to be hungry. We hope you choose to learn with us
and share your experience with others.
Sisterhood & Such
Sisterhood
E very month for the past four years I have had a short article in The Voice as President of TKA
Sisterhood. It has been an honor and my privilege to be the President. During my tenure, we have
encountered both smooth and rough patches, but we have all come out on top each time. I couldn’t have
accomplished what I have without the help of my Executive and General Board, Temple’s clergy and the
office staff over the past four years. I want to wish a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you!
Ashley's Mitzvah Project was working with her 4-H club,
