President’s Message
Before starting to write this message, I reviewed the two messages that I wrote for the Kibitzer in June 2002 and
August 2003. My first message started with an optimistic goal oriented viewpoint that I drew from my previous
experience. With every other position I’ve held, my approach was framed by asking what I could do to improve bridge
and its administration within the scope of my responsibilities. This was sometimes surprisingly easy.
In my first position (in 1984) as assistant tournament chair for the Edmonton Unit, my tenure started a week before a
sectional. Upon my arrival at the sectional, Phil Wood pointed out that we had insufficient paper supplies to hold the
events scheduled. When he asked whether we could locate any more pickup slips, I asked him, “What’s a pickup slip?”
After the tournament’s completion, I immediately set to work ensuring that we had a five-year supply of everything
we needed. A box for each upcoming sectional was packed with that tournament’s requirements. To my consternation,
in the last sectional before I left Edmonton in 1990, things had turned full circle. The new tournament chair had the
same problem!
This highlights what is an important factor in the success of any volunteer organization: volunteers who ensure that
the necessary tasks are done combined with a collective organizational “memory” that ensures that such tasks
continue to be remembered (and policies are applied consistently).
Since becoming president, I’ve determined that there is another side to having a successful organization and I found
that this was often a difficult role to fill. In my career as an auditor, (and this has been reinforced by all the recent
scandals in the corporate world) its been pointed our repeatedly that an auditor must be aware of how their work is
important to various “stakeholders”; the shareholders, management, employees, customers and perhaps a dozen other
interested parties. The importance of this was often forgotten in recent years.
The same situation exists, in microcosm, within the local bridge community. The interests of new players verses the
more experienced, club owners verses tournament organizers, social bridge verses highly competitive, all stain the
cohesiveness of the association. Effectively handling the conflict between the interests of various groups is an
important part of the president’s responsibility and it often results in none of the interested parties being truly
satisfied.
My term has been punctuated by long, difficult debates of the board in its attempts to reconcile conflicting interests
or find appropriate policies to resolve problems. I have found this role draining and frustrating at times. My time was
taken up with these issues rather than the types of things that I wanted to do. I need a break from this and am
looking forward to becoming past president. In this role, I will still be a member of the board but I plan to work
towards important but less contentious issues.
Two such contentious issues are outstanding as this is being written and it is my intention to attempt to resolve them
before my term is up. The first involves allegations of unethical behaviour and how these are dealt with. The other is
the CBF’s determination to hold a “no frills” fund raising regional in Calgary next winter.
I have become aware and increasingly concerned about comments being made by members about the ethics of other
players. Making such comments is an extremely serious breach of the rules of bridge and can result in severe
penalties. Not addressing this can have a corrosive effect and result in people leaving the game. If people have
concerns about unethical behaviour, the ACBL has procedures in place to deal with these concerns. The Board wants to
inform all members about their options and responsibilities in such situations and it is our plan to do this by the
summer.
The CBF regional is a concern for both the clubs, who stand to lose considerable revenue, and our regional organizing
committee that is concerned with how a “no frills” regional might hurt our hard earned reputation. A meeting on April
21 heard their concerns.
My time on the board has been an excellent experience and I hope to see as many of you as possible at the Annual
General Meeting on Saturday May 22.

Rick’s Bridge Classes
Read the Lead Against Suit Contract by Rick Tewari
(1) An ace is led, followed by a small card.
Assume: It is a Doubleton.
(2) The King of a suit is led.
Assume: The leader has either the Ace or the Queen of the suit.
(3) The Queen of a suit is led.
Assume: The leader has the Jack of that suit.
(4) Ace, King and Queen of a suit is missing. The leader does not lead any of the honors.
Assume: The leader does not have AK, KQ or QJ combination of the suit. Most probably the
declarer may have AQ of that suit.
(5) A pre-emptor leads another suit.
Assume: The lead is a singleton.
(6) The leader leads a short suit (high then low spot).
Assume: The leader has one of the high trump honors.
(7) You are declaring in your second suit and a trump is led.
Assume: The first suit is not breaking well.
(8) The person on lead did not lead his partner’s suit.
Assume:
(a) He does not have any card in that suit.
(b) He posses the Ace of that suit. He is expecting to capture an honor from the declarer.
(c) He is ready to have his face re-arranged.
(9) A low card of a suit that is not trump is lead.
Assume: The person on lead has an honor card in that suit.
(10) If a lead is made after a great deal of agony or deliberation.
Assume: The leader does not have a safe lead. He has honors everywhere.
Defence Against Finesse by Rick Tewari
(1) The defence against a finesse is based on the principle of PROMOTION.
(2) You should cover an honor with an honor, only if it will promote a lower card in your hand or in partner’s
hand.
(3) Do not cover if there is nothing to promote.
(4) Cover the second of touching honors.
(5) With a doubleton honor like K10 cover immediately.
(6) If your honor cannot be captured, do not cover.
(7) Do not cover if the bidding tells you that your partner may have one card in the suit or is void in that suit.
(8) Play smoothly. Hesitations are giveaways, that is, very informative to opponent.
(9) Do NOT hesitate if you do not hold the card declarer is looking for.

Unit 390 Volunteer Barbeque

This year our Unit will host the 4 th Annual Volunteer bridge game
and barbeque. The board members are very thankful for the
number of volunteers we have every year to help with tournaments,
the Kibitzer and other odd jobs throughout the year. To show our
gratitude, volunteers will be sent an invitation to attend this fun
filled day! An individual movement bridge game is played, prizes
are awarded then a fabulous feast of hamburgers, hot dogs, potato
salad and cake is served.
We don’t want to miss inviting anyone that has helped us out in the
last couple of years so please, if you haven’t received an invitation
by June 15, or you would like to become a volunteer, contact a Unit
member.

DISTRICT FINAL
This will be held commencing friday May 14 at 7:30 p.m. through May 16. The site is the Best Western (Village
Park Inn) in Motel Village at Crowchild Trail and 16th Avenue N.W. This event is in Calgary for the first time
after a number of years in Great Falls, Montana.
Worldwide Bridge Contest @ The Martinique

The Worldwide Bridge Contest allows matchpointing across the world. The Friday and Saturday games will be
separate events and will feature worldwide across-the-field scoring. ACBL will award masterpoint at sectional open
pair rating, ½ Red and ½ Black. The WBF will award prizes based on the world matchpointing. The two top District
winners by percentage receive bonus awards. Analyses by expert Eric Kokish.

Someone has reported problems accessing the Unit site by following http://www.calgarybridge.com/. They found that
by adding index.htm at the end it resolved the problem http://www.calgarybridge.com/index.htm. Hotmail users
should check their "Trash Can" folder or "Junk Email" folder. Apparently your Unit newsletters could be getting
diverted into it.
I would like to create a list of people's nicknames when they play bridge on the net. I find it really frustrating
especially on Bridge Base when I know that a lot of Edmonton players are online but have no idea who they
are. I have e-mailed Edmonton about making a list. If you want to be included send me your name and nicknames for
all places that you play online. Maybe some new partnerships can develop.
Answers to Rick’s Quiz
(1) Cover the second honor. If declarer is missing 10 and your partner has it, it will be promoted.
(2) Cover the first time. You may promote a card in your partner’s hand.
(3) Do not cover. If the declarer has KJ10 and you do not cover he may go up with the Ace and finesse the other
way. Now you will get your Queen.
(4) Definitely cover. If you do not cover, declarer will get 3 tricks.
(5) Do not cover the first time. If your partner has the King, declarer will lose another trick to your Nine.
Better Bridge by Frank Ayer

The single most important skill for card play is counting. Counting to 13 is not difficult but keeping track of 4
suits in 4 hands can be challenging. I want to let you in a little secret that will help. Instead of counting the actual
cards use the suit distributions.
By this I mean when you have 4 trumps in dummy and 5 in your hand instead of drawing a round and counting
“4” for the trick + “3” left in dummy +”4” in your hand, getting “11”, and then subtracting from “13” to get “2” still out,
and doing that for all 4 suits; try the following: with 5-4 the remaining cards are 4-0, 3-1, or 2-2 so the possible
distributions are 5-4-4-0, 5-4-3-1, or 5-4-2-2. If you draw a round of trump and everyone follows then 5-4-4-0 is
impossible and the distribution in the trump suit is either 5-4-3-1 or 5-4-2-2. When RHO fails to follow to a second
round of trump then the distribution in the trump suit is 5-4-3-1 with LHO having 3 – and you didn’t have to “count”
anything! Notice that since there are 13 cards in a suit and also 13 cards in each hand (and four suits and 4 hands) you
have started counting the opponents hands! Say you ended in 4S after LHO opened a weak 2H in first seat then his
distribution is 3-6-x-x where he is either 4-0, 3-1, or 2-2 in the minors and playing some minor-suit winners should
clarify that. Once one opponent’s hand is counted you know the whole distribution and finesses and endplays become,
if not sure things, then much more probable.
This method does not require you to remember how many times each opponent followed to every trick of every
suit, you merely have to remember the distributions of each suit and of one of the opposing hands. Instead of
counting sheep as you struggle to fall asleep at night try going through all possible distributions (13-0-0-0, 12-1-0-0,
down to 4-3-3-3) until you have them all memorized. Then the next time you are in a 6-2 trump fit the numbers 6-2-5-
0, 6-2-4-1, 6-2-3-2 will instantly pop into your head. While I am on the subject of counting you also have to count the
opponent’s High Card Points and the opponent’s tricks and you have to do these both as declarer and on defense but
try to perfect counting distributions first.
Spotlight on Teachers - Freda Nychkalo by Frank Ayer
At lunch time in classroom 10 on the second floor of Ranchlands Elementary School Freda Nychkalo prepares a
fifteen-minute lesson for nine students in grades 5 and 6. The lesson is bidding and hand evaluation. That’s right, it’s
about bridge. While the six boys and three girls settle down and start eating their lunches Freda has them go over
their homework. How many tricks could you get from A K x opposite Q x x? When one student is asked about 4 3 2
opposite 9 8 7 6 5 he replies “zero, one, or two; depending on the distribution”. Now there is a kid with promise at
this game. These kids are ten and eleven years old.
It takes about fifteen minutes to play each of the two lesson hands but Freda and her assistant Lorraine
Weller patiently sort out the partnerships, make the students answer their own questions, and encourage thinking and
fair play. I ask a couple of students why they are learning bridge – “Something new to do” and “My parents play” seem
to be the common answers although not many of the parents play bridge. Two of the girls think things are going too
slowly and want to leave the class but they are persuaded that it will get more exciting and decide to stay. At one
o’clock the students pack up their books and Freda, Lorraine, and I go for lunch.
Freda explains that bridge teaches sportsmanship and patience as well as arithmetic and logic. This is her
first year teaching; she and Lorraine took the Teacher Accreditation Program (TAP) last year in Pencticton and
started classes last fall. Lorraine plans to start her own classes next year at a nearby school. This will allow a yearend
tournament between the two schools. Freda is a retired teacher and looked for a way to combine her love of
teaching, kids, and bridge. She would like to get more programs going in schools and says that there is ample support
from the ACBL and BridgeBase. BridgeBase provides Mini-Bridge which trains trick-taking abilities -- the students
get to see dummy, decide how many tricks they can take, and then declare the contract; and Bridge-it where the
students have forms to fill out High Card Points and distribution points to practice bidding. The ACBL provides books
– The ACBL School Series, Audrey Grant’s Bidding, and Teach Me to Play by Jude Goodwin and Don Ellison. The ACBL
also provides Easy-Deal cards and financial reimbursement when there are sixteen classes and eight or more students.
There is a year-end tournament planned for year-end and I am invited to come back and see how well the
students have learned the game. I’m excited and that is an offer I can’t refuse.
