YOUTH SUCCESS<br />
Greetings!<br />
Because of the ongoing support of a dedicated donor community,<br />
<strong>Colorado</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> at <strong>Risk</strong> (<strong>CYAR</strong>) is prepared to launch into next<br />
year with a wealth of new resources. Our supporters’ generous<br />
contributions of time, talent, and treasure have made a<br />
tremendous difference in the lives of a growing number of youth.<br />
Last year, our mentors spent over 40,000 hours of time<br />
passionately transforming the lives of a record number of<br />
youth. In May we celebrated the graduation of youth from<br />
Manual High School and Aurora Central High School. And in<br />
April and October we launched new mentor/youth communities<br />
at Aurora Central and George Washington High Schools from<br />
our four-day Launch Course in Buena Vista, <strong>Colorado</strong>.<br />
Last year, our volunteers showcased an unprecedented depth<br />
and breadth of talent supporting our vision, our mission, and<br />
our programs. As an agency built on a committed, efficient<br />
staff, we cultivate and rely on a bench of raving fan volunteers<br />
who deliver truly remarkable results. These volunteers not only<br />
earn the feeling of heartfelt pride when the youth triumph, they<br />
also find a supportive community of other volunteers dedicated<br />
to everyone’s success.<br />
Last year, our donors contributed treasure that showed,<br />
more than ever, their trust, faith, and conviction in how<br />
we have positively changed youth and their communities<br />
since 1993. When our former Executive Director (one of<br />
our founders) Patti Bennett announced that her family was<br />
relocating outside of <strong>Colorado</strong>, our donors responded with<br />
an outpouring of love and support for our youth, firmly<br />
backing the programs that allow our youth to fulfill their<br />
plans for short-term and long-term success. The financial<br />
support enabled <strong>CYAR</strong> to confidently start a transition in<br />
leadership that will serve to build capacity and enhance<br />
our services.<br />
As a volunteer since 2007, a mentor since 2008, and a<br />
board member since 2009, I have seen, and continue to<br />
see, <strong>CYAR</strong> through many lenses. I am proud to introduce<br />
this Annual Report with the assurance that your investment<br />
in our youth and our communities will continue to be<br />
stewarded with the utmost care. On behalf of our talented<br />
board, our tireless staff, our fervent volunteers, and our<br />
incomparable youth, we appreciate you and cherish your<br />
invaluable gifts of time, talent, and treasure.<br />

Student Impact<br />
<strong>CYAR</strong> Programs<br />
Steps Ahead for <strong>Youth</strong><br />
The Steps Ahead for <strong>Youth</strong> program is conducted<br />
in partnership with several Denver Public Schools<br />
and Aurora Public Schools. It is a one-year<br />
intensive dropout prevention program for 9thand<br />
10th-grade students.<br />
The program sets itself apart from other mentoring<br />
organizations by delivering the following:<br />
Both community and one-on-one mentoring<br />
Four-day launch course retreat in the mountains<br />
High ropes course experience<br />
A 12-month series of community<br />
workshop sessions for<br />
mentors and youth<br />
Individualized coaching<br />
Touchstone<br />
The Touchstone program is a 2-3 year follow-up<br />
program to Steps Ahead designed to support<br />
students all the way through graduation.<br />
Touchstone is offered only to graduates of<br />
Steps Ahead and focuses on the following:<br />
Continued one-on-one mentoring<br />
Continued monthly community workshops<br />
Specialized training in relationships,<br />
leadership, and life beyond high school<br />
Support with college, scholarships,<br />
careers, etc.<br />
<strong>CYAR</strong> served 358 youth in <strong>2011</strong>, a record<br />
number for our agency.<br />
<strong>CYAR</strong> served an additional 600 students through<br />
the Taking on Possibility program, creating an<br />
empowering shift in student relationships with<br />
their school, future, and each other.<br />
<strong>CYAR</strong> continued to strengthen our programs by<br />
upgrading our evaluation measures.<br />
<strong>CYAR</strong> deepened the partnership with Manual<br />
High School by joining the Community Partner<br />
Program and providing a coalition of support for<br />
students and parents.<br />
<strong>CYAR</strong> continued to provide mentor training for<br />
the <strong>Youth</strong> Mentoring Collaborative.<br />
<strong>CYAR</strong> hosted the first annual Possibility 5K<br />
showcasing the powerful <strong>CYAR</strong> relationships.<br />
Upcoming Year Goals<br />
Next year, <strong>CYAR</strong> will plan to serve even more youth<br />
through our expanded programs.<br />
In addition, <strong>CYAR</strong> will serve 60 additional youth in<br />
the Manual Enrichment Project, providing intensive<br />
training and support to students as part of the<br />
school curricula.<br />
To continue our growth, we are always looking for<br />
new mentors. Help us spread the word!<br />

Notable Stats<br />
Of the 358 youth served, 95% of <strong>CYAR</strong> students<br />
stayed in school and 84% of seniors graduated.<br />
60% of Steps Ahead <strong>Youth</strong> improved their grade<br />
point average and attendance.<br />
TIME<br />
Last year 305 mentors volunteered an average<br />
of 133 hours each, resulting in an annual<br />
in-kind donation of $894,407. This is the<br />
equivalent of 18 full-time employees.<br />
TALENT<br />
Volunteers support our agency through<br />
involvement with fundraising events,<br />
administrative activities, IT support, web<br />
design, event management, and as donors.<br />
TREASURE<br />
Last year <strong>CYAR</strong> received $933,740 in<br />
in-kind contributions and donated services.<br />
I joined <strong>Colorado</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> at <strong>Risk</strong> because I wanted<br />
a mentor. I wanted someone to look up to when I<br />
had questions – somebody who wasn’t a parent,<br />
but knew as much as a parent did. My experience<br />
with <strong>CYAR</strong> helped me make a complete turnaround.<br />
I know it had everything to do with the one-on-one<br />
mentorship program, as well as the commitment<br />
I made to stay in the program. My freshman year<br />
GPA was 0.56 and now I’ve been on the honor roll<br />
for two years and had an internship.<br />
<strong>CYAR</strong> was my first step in getting involved at<br />
school. The program showed me that it could be<br />
fun to participate, and so I did. I joined speech,<br />
debate, student council, and cheerleading. Even my<br />
relationships with my teachers got better. I recently<br />
graduated from high school and will start college<br />
in Georgia in the fall! <strong>CYAR</strong> nominated me for the<br />
Daniels Fund Scholarship and because of that I’m<br />
able to go to the college of my choice. <strong>CYAR</strong> has<br />
improved my character and made me realize<br />
my potential.<br />
I could have been in the position that a lot of my<br />
friends are, not being able to afford school or not<br />
having the option of attending my college of choice.<br />
I know that if I was the person I was four years ago,<br />
I would still have wanted to go<br />
to college, but my ambitions<br />
related to college have changed.<br />
I reached for it. I probably wouldn’t have<br />
gone out of state or tried as hard as I did if I<br />
wasn’t in the program. My current motivation<br />
has so much to do with who I am now, not<br />
the person I was before <strong>CYAR</strong>.<br />
I’ve had two different mentors, Whitney and<br />
Judy, and I feel that each came at the right<br />
time for me and I learned a lot from both of<br />
them. They helped me keep my grades up<br />
and stay on top of things without nagging me.<br />
We had a lot of fun together and at the same<br />
time they made sure I was doing my work<br />
and college applications on time. Now I’ve<br />
graduated and am ready to go to college.<br />

93% of Touchstone youth graduate high school.<br />
100% of Touchstone graduates leave the<br />
program with a post graduation plan in place.<br />
TIME<br />
423 volunteers, including 305 mentors, were<br />
active during the past year, representing<br />
43,408 hours, not including board hours.<br />
TALENT<br />
Each year <strong>CYAR</strong> brings in a wide range of<br />
working professionals that mentees can<br />
interview to learn what it is like to work in<br />
their profession and how they can prepare<br />
for a future in that profession.<br />
TREASURE<br />
Tony Grampsas <strong>Youth</strong> Services funded two<br />
of the three <strong>CYAR</strong> Launch Courses last year,<br />
sending 80 youth and mentors to the four-day<br />
mountain retreat, which is the foundation of<br />
the mentoring community.<br />
I joined <strong>CYAR</strong> my 9th grade year because I was<br />
having trouble at home. My life felt really hectic<br />
and I was arguing a lot with family and friends and<br />
getting into trouble. I knew I was starting to make<br />
bad friends and heading down the wrong path.<br />
I thought a mentor would help me with the family<br />
issues and questions I had. What I didn’t know was<br />
that <strong>Colorado</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> at <strong>Risk</strong> would be a life changer<br />
for me. <strong>CYAR</strong> made me see things I didn’t see before;<br />
it made me open minded in my relationships and<br />
about my future.<br />
Before <strong>CYAR</strong> I didn’t think I’d be able to go to<br />
college. I thought that I’d start working after I<br />
graduated. Instead, <strong>CYAR</strong> helped me become<br />
more comfortable talking in public and I’ve<br />
seen myself grow academically and personally.<br />
I’m no longer shy. I talk more than I used to,<br />
and I try to get to know others. I even took<br />
the initiative to get involved in other programs.<br />
Also, my attitude toward school changed and I<br />
realized that in order to be successful I would<br />
need a college degree.<br />
I feel so grateful for all the help I’ve received<br />
from my mentor and <strong>CYAR</strong> during these four<br />
years of high school. My mentor helped<br />
me so much with college and<br />
scholarship applications. I found<br />
myself persevering even through the<br />
hard work of applications. I didn’t<br />
give up. I know I wouldn’t be where<br />
I am now, graduated and seeking a<br />
post-secondary education, without<br />
<strong>CYAR</strong>. I am so thankful for all the<br />
relationships and friendships I’ve<br />
made through this program.<br />
The first annual Possibility 5K was a huge<br />
success with nearly $20,000 raised!<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> Demographics<br />
<strong>CYAR</strong>’s participants live in neighborhoods with<br />
high rates of violent crime and poverty. The<br />
<strong>CYAR</strong> approach takes these challenges into<br />
account so youth stay on track for graduation.<br />
In addition, <strong>CYAR</strong> mentoring helps to foster<br />
greater mental and emotional health so students<br />
perform better in school and are more likely to<br />
maximize their academic potential. Sometimes<br />
all a student needs is guidance from a caring<br />
adult to have the confidence needed to succeed.<br />
