The Festival of the Conversion of Paul
The Ordinand
Glyn Webster was born in 1951 and was brought up in the small former mill
town of Darwen in Lancashire. On leaving school he went to work at Blackburn
Royal Infirmary, in the first instance for a mere six weeks, which turned out to be
five years. He trained as a nurse.
He studied and prepared for ordination at Cranmer Hall, St John’s College,
Durham. He was ordained Deacon in 1977 and Priest in 1978 in York Minster,
serving his Title as Assistant Curate in the Parish of All Saints, Huntington.
Glyn’s previous experience of having working in hospital was duly noted by the
Right Reverend Morris Maddocks, the then Bishop of Selby. Accordingly, he was
sent to work as a very part-time Chaplain in the York District Hospital. In January
1981, Glyn was appointed Vicar of the Parish of St Luke’s, York and Senior
Chaplain, York District Hospital. He served in this join capacity until September
1992 when he was appointed Senior Chaplain to the York Health Services Trust.
He was appointed Canon of York and Prebendary of Dunnington in 1994.
In January 1999, Glyn moved to the Minster full time as a Canon Residentiary –
serving successively as Treasurer, Pastor and Chancellor, with two spells as Acting
Dean (2003–2004 and during the most recent decanal vacancy in 2012). He was
elected as a member of the General Synod in 1995 and has served as Prolocutor
of the Lower House of the Convocation of York since 2000. For the last five
years he has been a member of the Crown Nominations Commission.
This service, at which Glyn is ordained and consecrated Bishop in the Church of
God, sees Glyn lay aside his current responsibilities in order to devote himself to a
new sphere of ministry.
Hymn
1
Of the Father’s heart begotten
ere the world from chaos rose,
He is Alpha: from that fountain
all that is and hath been flows;
he is Omega, of all things
yet to come the mystic close,
evermore and evermore.
2
By his word was all created;
he commanded and ’twas done;
earth and sky and boundless ocean,
universe of three in one,
all that sees the moon’s soft radiance,
all that breathes beneath the sun,
evermore and evermore.
3
He assumed this mortal body,
frail and feeble, doomed to die,
that the race from dust created
might not perish utterly,
which the dreadful law had sentenced
in the depths of hell to lie,
evermore and evermore.
4
O how blest that wondrous birthday,
when the maid the curse retrieved,
brought to birth mankind’s salvation,
by the Holy Ghost conceived;
and the Babe, the world’s Redeemer,
in her loving arms received,
evermore and evermore.
5
This is he, whom seer and sibyl
sang in ages long gone by;
this is he of old revealed
in the page of prophecy;
Lo! he comes, the promised Saviour;
let the world his praises cry!
evermore and evermore.
6
Sing, ye heights of heav’n, his praises;
angels and archangels, sing!
Whereso’er ye be, ye faithful,
let your joyous anthems ring,
ev’ry tongue his name confessing,
countless voices answering,
evermore and evermore.
The Greeting
The Archbishop greets the people
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.
There is one body and one spirit.
There is one hope to which we were called;
One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all.
Peace be with you
and also with you.
The Archbishop introduces the service
God calls his people to follow Christ, and forms us into a royal priesthood, a holy
nation, to declare the wonderful deeds of him who has called us out of darkness
into his marvellous light.
The Church is the Body of Christ, the people of God and the dwelling-place of the
Holy Spirit. In baptism the whole Church is summoned to witness to God's love
and to work for the coming of his kingdom.
To serve this royal priesthood, God has given particular ministries. Bishops are
ordained to be shepherds of Christ's flock and guardians of the faith of the
apostles, proclaiming the gospel of God's kingdom and leading his people in
mission. Obedient to the call of Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit, they
are to gather God's people and celebrate with them the sacraments of the new
covenant. Thus formed into a single communion of faith and love, the Church in
each place and time is united with the Church in every place and time.
Prayers of Penitence
As we stand together before God, and trusting in his grace alone,
let us join with Glyn in confessing our sins.
Lord Jesus, in your love you invite us to be your friends:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord Jesus, in your joy you chose us to go out and bear fruit:
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
7
Lord Jesus, in your power you send us to be your faithful witnesses:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
May the Father of all mercies
cleanse you from your sins,
and restore you in his image
to the praise and glory of his name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Please sit.
The Presentation
The Most Reverend and Right Honourable Lord Hope of Thornes and the Right Reverend
Nigel McCulloch say
Reverend Father in God, Glyn has been chosen to be Bishop of Beverley. We
present him to be ordained and consecrated to the office of bishop in the Church
of God.
The Archbishop asks
Do you believe him to be of godly life and sound learning?
Those presenting respond
We do.
Do you believe him to be duly called to serve God in this ministry?
We do.
The Archbishop turns to the ordinand and says
Do you believe that God is calling you to this ministry?
The ordinand responds
I do so believe.
The Archbishop says
Let the authority for the ordination be read.
The Principal Registrar of the Province of York reads the Royal Mandates.
The Archbishop says
Glyn, you have taken the oath of allegiance to the Sovereign and the oath of due
obedience. You are now required to make the Declaration of Assent.
8
The Archbishop reads the Preface to the Declaration of Assent
The Church of England is part of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church,
worshipping the one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith
uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds,
which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led
by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic
formularies, the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer and
the Ordering of Bishops, Priests and Deacons. In the declaration you are about
to make, will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration
and guidance under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this
generation and making him known to those in your care?
The ordinand responds
I Glyn Hamilton Webster, do so affirm, and accordingly declare my belief in the
faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds
and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and
in public prayer and administration of the sacraments, I will use only the forms of
service which are authorized or allowed by Canon.
The Archbishop says
Let us stand to pray for Glyn and for the ministry of the whole people of God.
Please stand.
Silence is kept.
God our Father, Lord of all the world,
through your Son you have called us into the fellowship
of your universal Church:
hear our prayer for your faithful people
that in their vocation and ministry each may be an instrument of your love,
and give to your servant Glyn now to be ordained
the needful gifts of grace;
through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
The Liturgy of the Word
Old Testament Reading
Giles Longstaff, York Minster Chorister, reads
A reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah.
Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, ‘Before I formed you in the womb
I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a
prophet to the nations.’ Then I said, ‘Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to
speak, for I am only a boy.’
But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, “I am only a boy”; for you shall go to all to
whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you.
Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.’
Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me,
‘Now I have put my words in your mouth.
See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms.’
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Jeremiah 1.4-10
Please remain seated.
Psalm
The choir sings
1 God be merciful unto us, and bless us :
and shew us the light of his countenance, and be merciful unto us:
2 That thy way may be known upon earth : thy saving health among all nations.
3 Let the people praise thee, O God : yea, let all the people praise thee.
4 O let the nations rejoice and be glad :
for thou shalt judge the folk righteously, and govern the nations upon earth.
5 Let the people praise thee, O God : let all the people praise thee.
6 Then shall the earth bring forth her increase :
and God, even our own God, shall give us his blessing.
7 God shall bless us : and all the ends of the world shall fear him.
Psalm 67
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be : world without end.
Amen.
New Testament Reading
The Very Reverend Vivienne Faull, Dean of York, reads
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to
the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if
he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them
bound to Jerusalem. Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus,
suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a
voice saying to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’ He asked, ‘Who are
you, Lord?’ The reply came, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But get up and
enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.’ The men who were
travelling with him stood speechless because they heard the voice but saw no one.
Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see
nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. For three
days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.
Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a
vision, ‘Ananias.’ He answered, ‘Here I am, Lord.’ The Lord said to him, ‘Get up
and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of
Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man
named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.’
But Ananias answered, ‘Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much
evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem; and here he has authority from the
chief priests to bind all who invoke your name.’ But the Lord said to him, ‘Go, for
he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and
kings and before the people of Israel; I myself will show him how much he must
suffer for the sake of my name.’ So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid
his hands on Saul and said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on
your way here, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with
the Holy Spirit.’ And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and his
sight was restored. Then he got up and was baptized, and after taking some food,
he regained his strength. For several days he was with the disciples in Damascus,
and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, ‘He is the
Son of God.’ All who heard him were amazed and said, ‘Is not this the man who
made havoc in Jerusalem among those who invoked this name? And has he not
come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?’ Saul
became increasingly more powerful and confounded the Jews who lived in
Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Messiah.
Acts 9.1-22
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Gradual Hymn
1
We sing the glorious conquest
before Damascus’ gate,
when Saul, the Church’s spoiler,
came breathing threats and hate;
the ravening wolf rushed forward
full early to the prey;
but lo! the Shepherd met him,
and bound him fast to-day!
2
O glory most excelling
that smote across his path!
O light that pierced and blinded
the zealot in his wrath!
O voice that spake within him
the calm reproving word!
O love that sought and held him,
the bondman of his Lord.
3
O Wisdom, ordering all things
in order strong and sweet,
what nobler spoil was ever
cast at the Victor’s feet?
What wiser master-builder
e’er wrought at thine employ,
than he, till now so furious
thy building to destroy?
4
Lord, teach thy Church the lesson,
still in her darkest hour
of weakness and of danger,
to trust thy hidden power:
thy grace by ways mysterious
the wrath of man can bind,
and in thy boldest foeman
thy chosen saint can find.
Gospel Reading
The Deacon, The Reverend Christine Peel, says
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
Peter said to Jesus: ‘Look, we have left everything and followed you. What then
will we have?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things,
when the Son of Man is seated on the throne of his glory, you who have followed
me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And
everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or
children or fields, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit
eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
The Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
14
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
The Liturgy of Ordination
The Declarations
The ordinand stands before the Archbishop, who addresses the congregation
Bishops are called to serve and care for the flock of Christ. Mindful of the Good
Shepherd, who laid down his life for his sheep, they are to love and pray for those
committed to their charge, knowing their people and being known by them. As
principal ministers of word and sacrament, stewards of the mysteries of God, they
are to preside at the Lord’s table and to lead the offering of prayer and praise.
They are to feed God’s pilgrim people, and so build up the Body of Christ.
They are to baptize and confirm, nurturing God’s people in the life of the Spirit
and leading them in the way of holiness. They are to discern and foster the gifts of
the Spirit in all who follow Christ, commissioning them to minister in his name.
They are to preside over the ordination of deacons and priests, and join together
in the ordination of bishops.
As chief pastors, it is their duty to share with their fellow presbyters the oversight
of the Church, speaking in the name of God and expounding the gospel of
salvation. With the Shepherd’s love, they are to be merciful, but with firmness; to
minister discipline, but with compassion. They are to have a special care for the
poor, the outcast and those who are in need. They are to seek out those who are
lost and lead them home with rejoicing, declaring the absolution and forgiveness
of sins to those who turn to Christ.
Following the example of the prophets and the teaching of the apostles, they are
to proclaim the gospel boldly, confront injustice and work for righteousness and
peace in all the world.
The Archbishop addresses the ordinand directly
Glyn, we trust that you have weighed and pondered all this, and that you are now
fully determined to devote yourself to this ministry to which God has called you.
We pray that you may offer to him your best powers of mind and spirit, so that as
you follow the rule and teaching of our Lord you may grow up into his likeness,
and sanctify the lives of all with whom you have to do.
And now, in order that we may know your mind and purpose, you must make the
declarations we put to you.
Do you accept the Holy Scriptures as revealing all things necessary for eternal
salvation through faith in Jesus Christ?
The ordinand responds
I do so accept them.
The ordinand turns to face the congregation.
17
The Archbishop says
Brothers and sisters, you have heard how great is the charge that Glyn is ready to
undertake, and you have heard his declarations. Is it now your will that he should
be ordained?
It is.
Will you continually pray for him?
We will.
Will you uphold and encourage him in his ministry?
We will.
The ordinand turns to face the Archbishop, who continues
Glyn, remember always with thanksgiving that God has entrusted to your care
Christ’s beloved bride, his own flock, bought by the shedding of his blood on the
cross.
You are to govern Christ's people in truth, lead them out to proclaim the good
news of the kingdom, and prepare them to stand before him when at last he
comes in glory.
You cannot bear the weight of this calling in your own strength, but only by the
grace and power of God. Pray therefore that you may be conformed more and
more to the image of God's Son, so that through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit
your life and ministry may be made holy and acceptable to God.
Pray earnestly for the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Please kneel.
Silence is kept.
Veni Creator
18
1
Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,
and lighten with celestial fire;
thou the anointing Spirit art,
who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.
2
Thy blessed unction from above
is comfort, life and fire of love;
enable with perpetual light
the dullness of our blinded sight.
3
Anoint and cheer our soilèd face
with the abundance of thy grace;
keep far our foes, give peace at home;
where thou art guide no ill can come.
4
Teach us to know the Father, Son,
and thee, of both, to be but one;
that through the ages all along
this may be our endless song:
Praise to thy eternal merit,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
Words: Latin, paraphrased by John Cosin 1594-1672
Tune: Veni creator, mode viii
The Litany
In the power of the Spirit, and in union with Christ,
For the peace of the whole world,
for the welfare of the Holy Church of God, and for the unity of all,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
19
For all the members of the Church in their vocation and ministry,
that they may serve him in truth and love,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For Sentamu our Archbishop, and for all bishops, presbyters and deacons,
that they may hunger for truth and thirst after righteousness,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For Glyn, called to be a bishop in the Church,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the mission of the Church,
that in faithful witness we may proclaim the gospel of reconciliation
to the ends of the earth,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the unity of the Church, that there may be one flock and one Shepherd,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For those who are lost and for those who have strayed,
that they may return to the way of Christ,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the sick and suffering, for the aged and infirm,
for the lonely and neglected,
and for all who remember and care for them,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For Elizabeth our Queen,
for the leaders of the nations, and for all in authority,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
20
For ourselves,
for grace to repent and amend our lives,
that we may be pardoned and absolved from all our sins,
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
Remembering the Blessed Virgin Mary, Paul the Apostle,
and all who have gone before us in faith,
and in communion with all the saints,
we commit ourselves, one another,
The Ordination Prayer
The congregation remains kneeling.
The ordinand continues to kneel before the Archbishop, who stands to pray
We praise and glorify you, almighty Father,
because in your infinite love you have formed throughout the world
a holy people for your own possession,
a royal priesthood, a universal Church.
We praise and glorify you because you sent your only Son Jesus Christ,
the image of your eternal and invisible glory,
the firstborn of all creation and head of the Church.
We praise and glorify you that by his death he has overcome death;
and that, having ascended into heaven,
he poured out your Holy Spirit upon his disciples,
to give them power to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth
and to build up your people in love.
And now we give you thanks
that you have called this your servant, whom we ordain in your name,
to share as a bishop in the ministry of the gospel of Christ,
the Apostle and High Priest of our faith and the Shepherd of our souls.
Therefore, Father, through Christ our Lord we pray:
21
Here the Archbishop and other bishops lay their hands on the head of the ordinand, and the
Archbishop says
Send down the Holy Spirit on your servant Glyn
for the office and work of a bishop in your Church.
The Archbishop continues
Through your Spirit, heavenly Father,
fill this your servant with the grace and power which you gave to your apostles,
that as a true shepherd he may feed and govern your flock,
and lead them in proclaiming the gospel of your salvation in the world.
Make him steadfast as a guardian of the faith and sacraments,
wise as a teacher, and faithful in presiding at the worship of your people.
Through him, with his fellow servants in Christ,
increase your Church and renew its ministry,
uniting its members in a holy fellowship of truth and love.
Give him humility, that he may use his authority to heal,
not to hurt; to build up, not to destroy.
Defend him from all evil, that he may, as a faithful steward,
be presented blameless with all your household
and, at the last, enter your eternal joy,
through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and your Holy Spirit,
belong glory and honour, worship and praise, now and for ever.
Amen.
Please sit.
The Giving of the Bible
The newly ordained Bishop stands and the Archbishop gives him a Bible, saying
Receive this book,
as a sign of the authority given you this day
to build up Christ’s Church in truth.
Here are words of eternal life.
Take them for your guide and declare them to the world.
The Anointing
The newly ordained Bishop kneels and the Archbishop anoints their heads, saying
I anoint you with this oil of gladness.
22
May God,
who anointed the Christ with the Holy Spirit at his baptism,
anoint and empower you to bring good news to the poor,
to proclaim release to the captives,
to set free those who are oppressed
and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.
May the Lord keep you in the joy,
simplicity and compassion of his Holy Gospel. Amen.
Please stand.
The Welcome
The newly ordained Bishop faces the people, and the Bishop of Newcastle says to him
Glyn, guard the truth that has been entrusted to you
by the Holy Spirit who lives in us.
We welcome you as a shepherd of Christ's flock.
Build up the Church in unity and love, that the world may believe.
The Liturgy of the Eucharist
The Peace
The Archbishop says
Let the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus.
The peace of the Lord be always with you
and also with you.
cf Philippians 4.7
The Deacon says
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.
Preparation of the Table
During the following hymn the bread and wine are placed on the holy table, and the
offerings of the people are collected and presented.
Hymn
1
Jerusalem the golden,
with milk and honey blest,
beneath thy contemplation
sink heart and voice opprest.
I know not, O I know not,
what social joys are there,
what radiancy of glory,
what light beyond compare.
2
They stand, those halls of Sion,
conjubilant with song,
and bright with many an angel,
and all the martyr throng;
the Prince is ever in them,
the daylight is serene,
the pastures of the blessed
are decked in glorious sheen.
3
There is the throne of David,
and there, from care released,
the song of them that triumph,
the shout of them that feast;
and they who, with their leader,
have conquered in the fight,
for ever and for ever
are clad in robes of white.
4
O sweet and blessed country,
shall I ever see thy face?
O sweet and blessed country,
shall I ever win thy grace?
Exult, O dust and ashes!
The Lord shall be thy part:
his only, his for ever,
thou shalt be, and thou art!
The Eucharistic Prayer
The Lord be with you
and also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
It is truly right and just,
our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Christ is the Good Shepherd of the whole flock,
for which the Holy Spirit ordains bishops
to govern the Church bought by the blood of the eternal covenant.
In this joyful community of faith,
your people, filled with the gifts of the Spirit,
assemble together in one communion of love.
Here the gospel is set forth
and fulfilled in the Supper of the Lord
to make your Church a sign of love and unity for all.
Therefore with angels and archangels,
and with all the company of heaven,
we proclaim your great and glorious name,
for ever praising you and singing:
The Choir sings
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus,
Dominus Deus Sabaoth,
pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis.
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;
grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit,
and according to your holy will,
these gifts of bread and wine
may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed,
took bread and gave you thanks;
he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:
25
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.
In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks;
he gave it to them, saying:
Drink this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
The deacon says
Great is the mystery of faith.
Christ has died:
Christ is risen:
Christ will come again.
And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross,
his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world;
rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,
and looking for his coming in glory,
we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.
As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving,
we bring before you this bread and this cup
and we thank you for counting us worthy
to stand in your presence and serve you.
Send the Holy Spirit on your people
and gather into one in your kingdom
all who share this one bread and one cup,
so that we, in the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Peter the Apostle, William of York and all the saints,
may praise and glorify you for ever,
through Jesus Christ our Lord;
by whom, and with whom,
and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory be yours,
almighty Father, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Please kneel.
Silence is kept.
26
The Lord’s Prayer
As our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion
Draw near with faith.
Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ
which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you.
Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you,
and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.
We do not presume
to come to this thy table, O merciful Lord,
trusting in our own righteousness,
but in thy manifold and great mercies.
We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs
under thy table.
But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy.
Grant us therefore, gracious Lord,
so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood,
that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body
and our souls washed through his most precious blood,
and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.
27
Communicant members of all Christian Churches are invited to receive Communion.
Any member of the congregation may come to receive a blessing. Please carry this
service book as an indication to the ministers. Communion is administered at a number
of places. You will be guided by the Stewards.
The practice at York Minster is for you to receive the wafer into your hand; please don’t
try to dip your wafer into the wine. If you don’t wish to drink from the common cup,
please take the wafer only.
If you require a gluten-free wafer please receive Communion at the point nearest the
pulpit (the north side) and indicate to the priest administering.
Authorised words of distribution are used, and the communicant replies Amen.
Music during Communion
The congregation sings
1
Soul of my Saviour, sanctify my breast,
body of Christ, be thou my saving guest,
blood of my Saviour, bathe me in thy tide,
wash me with water flowing from thy side.
2
Strength and protection may thy passion be,
O blessed Jesu, hear and answer me;
deep in thy wounds, Lord, hide and shelter me,
so shall I never, never part from thee.
3
Guard and defend me from the foe malign,
in death’s dread moments make me only thine;
call me and bid me come to thee on high
where I may praise thee with thy saints for ay.
Words: Latin, 14 th cent, tr Anon
Tune: Anima Chrisi, William Maher 1823-77
The choir sings
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata
mundi, miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata
mundi, miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata
mundi, dona nobis pacem.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy upon us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy upon us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
grant us peace.
and
1
Victim divine, thy grace we claim,
While thus thy precious death we show;
Once offered up, a spotless lamb,
In thy great temple here below,
Thou didst for all mankind atone,
And standest now before the throne.
2
Thou standest in the holiest place,
As now for guilty sinners slain;
Thy blood of sprinkling speaks, and prays,
All-prevalent for helpless man;
Thy blood is still our ransom found,
And spreads salvation all around.
3
We need not now go up to heaven,
To bring the long-sought Saviour down;
Thou art to all already given,
Thou dost ev'n now thy banquet crown:
To every faithful soul appear,
And show thy real presence here!
Words: Charles Wesley 1707-88
Music: Peter Moger 1964-
29
The congregation sings
1
There’s a wideness in God’s mercy,
like the wideness of the sea;
there’s a kindness in his justice,
which is more than liberty.
There is no place where earth’s sorrows
are more felt than up in heaven;
there is no place where earth’s failings
have such kindly judgement given.
3
There is plentiful redemption
in the blood that has been shed;
there is joy for all the members
in the sorrows of the head.
There is grace enough for thousands
of new worlds as great as this;
there is room for fresh creations
in that upper home of bliss.
4 (2 nd half of tune)
If our love were but more simple,
we should take him at his word;
and our lives would be all gladness
in the joy of Christ our Lord.
2
For the love of God is broader
than the measure of man’s mind;
and the heart of the eternal
is most wonderfully kind.
But we make his love too narrow
by false limits of our own;
and we magnify his strictness
with a zeal he will not own.
Prayer after Communion
Almighty God,
who on the day of Pentecost
with the wind from heaven and in tongues of flame,
filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel:
by the power of the same Spirit
strengthen us to witness to your truth
and to draw everyone to the fire of your love;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
We thank you, gracious Father,
for welcoming your children to feast in your kingdom;
by your love unite us and with your Spirit send us,
in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Sending Out
The Blessing
The Archbishop says
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who has made heaven and earth.
Blessed be the name of the Lord,
now and for ever. Amen.
May Christ, who called Paul to his service,
and to preach the good news to the world,
strengthen you to witness to his grace and love,
and the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always.
Amen.
31
The Giving of the Pastoral Staff
The Archbishop gives the newly ordained Bishop a pastoral staff, saying
Keep watch over the whole flock
in which the Holy Spirit has appointed you shepherd.
Encourage the faithful, restore the lost, build up the Body of Christ.
The Dismissal
The Deacon says
Go in the peace of Christ.
Thanks be to God.
Recessional Hymn
1
How shall I sing that Majesty
which angels do admire?
Let dust in dust and silence lie;
sing, sing, ye heavenly choir.
Thousands of thousands stand around
thy throne, O God most high;
ten thousand times ten thousand sound
thy praise; but who am I?
2
Thy brightness unto them appears,
whilst I thy footsteps trace;
a sound of God comes to my ears;
but they behold thy face:
they sing because thou art their sun:
Lord, send a beam on me;
for where heaven is but once begun,
there alleluias be.
32
3
Enlighten with faith's light my heart,
inflame it with love's fire;
then shall I sing and bear a part
with that celestial choir.
I shall, I fear, be dark and cold,
with all my fire and light;
yet when thou dost accept their gold,
Lord, treasure up my mite.
4
How great a being Lord, is thine,
which doth all beings keep!
Thy knowledge is the only line
to sound so vast a deep:
thou art a sea without a shore,
a sun without a sphere;
thy time is now and evermore,
thy place is everywhere.
Words: John Mason c.1645-94
Tune: Coe Fen, Kenneth Naylor 1931-91
As the Minster Choir leaves, Psalm 150 is sung
O praise God in his holiness:
praise him in the firmament of his power.
Praise him in his noble acts:
praise him according to his excellent greatness.
Praise him in the sound of the trumpet:
praise him upon the lute and harp.
Praise him in the cymbals and dances:
praise him upon the strings and pipe.
Praise him upon the well-tuned cymbals:
praise him upon the loud cymbals.
Let every thing that hath breath: praise the Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
world without end. Amen.
