The Nor-Wester
by Ron Theroux, President
We are hearing news of several Morgans having minor
restorations done on them over the winter, and others
undergoing a complete frame-up rebuild. This kind of
enthusiasm should prompt the rest of us to roll the dust
covers off, and check the battery? Well, at least I
should? I expect the rest of you have been taking
advantage of this extended winter. After the mandatory
car wash on the first warm day, oil & filter change,
chassis lube, wheel cleaning and now for that new and
improved special formula super polish that Santa put in
your stocking. Ah, the great smells of Spring to a
Morgan owner! If you call, I’ll be out in the garage.
Your officers will be holding a Quarterly meeting in April. There will be several items on our agenda
that should be noted here. I regret we were unable to put together the Name Tags in time for distribution
with the Roster. It is hoped they will be ready later this year. As well, we will be discussing the three
regional ABFMs and plans for post functions.
However the biggest (my opinion) undertaking we have is the review (critique) of our Annual Banquet.
It was the overall comment of the members attending in Feb. “this was much better than our combined
regional Christmas Party” and “a good time of year for a party”. A function like your Port Ludlow
banquet does not happen on a last minute whim. Location, accommodation, dining facilities and
attendance estimates must be planned and booked well in advance. That’s why this year’s Officers must
put the ball in motion, with the expectation and hope it will meet with the approval and enthusiasm of
the membership. As well, we have to insure this will be a format/venue the new Club Officers in 2003
will be able to embrace. What we offer will be a reflection of the wishes of the membership.
So pleased to report of the growing number of Morgans in Idaho; last count should make it twelve?
While not all are members (yet), it’s good to have “Morgan Bob” on the job, carrying the MOG NW
flag! Could next year be a revisit to SPUD MOG? Was it only 10 years ago, some of us were just kids?
Great high country, excellent roads, super hospitality and scenery that will knock your socks off (Mike
Powley’s favorite Mountain Home?) This alone should draw members from all of the vast regions of
MOG NW.
Midlanders Report
from Dave Wellington
I was out of town and missed the March breakfast at the Roanoke Inn. Hopefully there was a good turnout.
(Editor’s insert – Jones in his FlatRad, Runions in his Plus 4, Button, Weiskind x 2, Ozuna x 2, VanHook, Colby
x 2, Dow and Pollock in his Trike! So of course we experts all talked cars, boats, planes and trains! No mention
of women! I guess we’re not experts.)
Don't forget that our April ‘meeting’ will be the Daffodil-Tulip Rallye on Sat. the 13th. If you haven't yet
registered, don't worry. Just show up at the Cascade Mall in Burlington a little before 9:30am. Take Exit 230
(Hwy 20) off I-5, head East and quickly South. Don't forget to bring 12 bucks for the registration fee, some
canned food for NW Harvest donation, and a picnic lunch for the end of the Rallye (around 2:00pm.) We'll park
our Mogs together at the end point and our Club will, of course, graciously accept the 1st place competition
award! Let's make a "Morgan statement" this year with a large member turnout. It should be great fun!
Add another important date to your calendars! On Sat, August 10 th , we are planning a Morgan run to Whidbey
Island, a visit to a local resident's car collection, and a grand finale (Editor’s note – “as yet undetermined.”) More
on this in future issues as we firm up the details but it promises to be a great driving outing. Mark your calendars
now!
I'll see you Sat. the 13th when MOGNW 'tip toes thru the tulips!'
The Irish Lament
by Rod Lafond
At eight o’clock Saturday morning, the snow had stopped coming down but there were a couple of inches of the
white stuff on the lawn and, more importantly, on the road too. The Irish Lament included a planned run through
some fairly twisty hills in the Fraser Valley and, snow removal being what it is in this part of the country, things
were not looking good. The early morning phone calls lead to the only sensible decision; bring the Detroit Iron.
Now, it’s just before eleven and Ann and I are at the Clayburn Store, the designated starting point, when we
realize that the luck of the Irish has suddenly kicked in. The sun is out, the snow has melted off the roads and the
first arrival is a stalwart soul in a blue Morgan. Dave Collis is on the scene, top down, snow be damned! Before
long, Ted and Judy Carew-Gibson show up with their Morgan too. Meanwhile, the rest of us just feel shown-up.
After a quick sit down for tea and scones, our five-car convoy (40% Morgan) heads for the hills. Ken and Pat
Miles, Ron and Yvonne Theroux, and Les and June Burkholder in the daily drivers, round out the pack.
An hour later, at the Yorkshire Rose in Abbotsford, everyone wishes they had brought their Morgan and there is
talk of doing it all again on a more auspicious day. We were joined for lunch by Al and Helen Allison, Steve and
Celia Hutchens and Stuart and Marilyn Rulka. Good friends, beer at just below room temperature, roast beef and
Yorkshire pudding, fish and chips, treacle sponge for dessert and lots of talk about our favorite topic…does it get
any better than this? Oh, and tea and scones too! Does it get any more British than this?
Northern Pod Island Cell
from Woody Thomson
The March “Noggin & Natter” meeting of The Island Cell of the Northern Pod (organised by Roland & Pat
Gilbert, and hosted by Rocky Rochfort) was well attended by 11 Morgan enthusiasts, 2 of whom arrived on a very
cold evening in their Mogs, Lars Junker in his green/black ’68 +4 (roof down!) and Ron Acres in his BRG ’63 +4.
Also at the Yacht Club bar were Jim & Mavis Bayer, Hal Irwin, and Woody & Carmel Thomson.
Lively conversation (and tipping) all around the table. Jim Walters (owner of Bristol Motors) whose rebuild of a
’68 4/4 is regularly being ‘bumped’ by restorations and rebuilds of everything from Lagondas to Aston Martins,
indicated he would be happy to share with our group (at the BBQ if it rains?) his copy of a video, made of the
“Around the World in 80 Days” Car Rally which was held by The Classic Rally Association of GB in May, 2000,
to mark the millennium. I’ve seen version # 1 of the rally video (3 hours!), but I believe Jim has version #2,
edited to 2 hrs. I myself shot video of our winning (Vintage class) Canadian team, concentrating on Jim and his
cousin Len’s 1936 Packard, as it passed through Kamloops, B.C.
Re: The “Father’s Day Picnic” weekend in Victoria – no organised tour this year, as we understand many of
you are doing the ‘Barkerville or Bust’ Tour starting right after the (Sunday, June 16 th ) English Car Picnic in
Beacon Hill Park, Victoria. But as last year, Carmel & I will throw the Lake property where we live open all day
Saturday, June 15 th , for camping, swimming, boating, hiking, drinking OR short, Mog-challenging drives to
wherever anyone feels like going. We traditionally gather for an early Saturday afternoon old-style BBQ over a
huge campfire (no gas, charcoal nonsense, just wood) and enjoy the great outdoors. Bring a tent and camp-out,
there is a big porch if necessary.
Re: Saturday (15 th ) night; we have rustic accommodation at the big cottage for 4 or 5 couples, but this must be
pre-arranged with me as early as possible (250 479-7743). Victoria of course has lots of Motels, Hotels, and
B&B’s – not usually full at that time of year. I’ll help if I can. Area map faxed or e-mailed on request.
