<strong>in</strong>terventions to patients at the Kansas City Veterans Adm<strong>in</strong>istration Medical Center. Worked<br />

full-time dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer <strong>and</strong> fall at the V.A., at first help<strong>in</strong>g them develop their<br />

vocational rehabilitation program, then turn<strong>in</strong>g my attention to try<strong>in</strong>g to underst<strong>and</strong> how the<br />

veterans ga<strong>in</strong> entry <strong>in</strong>to the VR system <strong>and</strong> utilize vocational resources. I saw patients from<br />

<strong>in</strong>patient psychiatry wards, medical <strong>and</strong> surgical wards, <strong>and</strong> the outpatient mental health<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ic, but spent most <strong>of</strong> my time with patients be<strong>in</strong>g treated for substance abuse. I <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

workshops on vocational services to the staff, <strong>and</strong> consulted with medical <strong>and</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istrative<br />

staff on specific patients as well as on the services available. Before the end <strong>of</strong> the sabbatical<br />

period, I secured fund<strong>in</strong>g at about $50,000 per year for four doctoral students <strong>in</strong> Counsel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Psychology</strong> to provide services at the VA under my supervision. This arrangement lasted<br />

through 1999 with over $300,000 <strong>in</strong> grants to KU <strong>and</strong> generous fund<strong>in</strong>g for 14 different<br />

students.<br />
