Invitation
to the international meeting „Technology development and –transfer in the iron Age“ in
Hallstatt (Austria), the 10 th to 13 th September 2009.
A great part of archaeological work is dedicated to technical and technological aspects. One of the
reasons for this is that these subjects stand on solid ground - more than subjects like religion or
cultural contact. In addition to the reconstruction of technical processes the 26 papers will deal with
the concentration of technological development in space and time, with mechanisms of diffusion
and the integration of certain social groups into these processes. Among regional studies there will
be discussed the general transfer mechanisms of material groups like ceramics, metall, textiles,
stones, fossile materials and glass.
M e e t i n g p l a c e
The meeting takes place in the Centre of Culture and Congresses in Hallstatt. The congress office
will be also there. In the attachment you will find a map of Hallstatt. You can arrive Hallstatt by car
and by train (incl. ship tour crossing the Hallstatt lake); the next airports are Salzburg, Linz, Vienna
(all Austria) and Munich (Germany).
E x c u r s i o n s
Two excursions will be offered:
Excursion A/B: Museum Hallstatt, archaeological-historical guided walk through the village,
“Hochtal” with cemetry and prehistoric salt mine. This excursion will be
undertaken half-days at the 11 th and 12 th September, in two groups by the team of
the NHM Vienna.
Excursion C: Day-trip to Hallein, guided tour of the topography of the Dürrnberg and the Museum
Hallein. Organisation by the team of the Upper Austrian Museum Linz and the
Austrian Research Centre Dürrnberg.
