A named investigator in an Arts and Humanities Research Council [AHRC] grant for £90,136 plus two PhD
bursaries (awarded to Emily Twitchett and Manuela Angioi), awarded in 2006. The study aimed to investigate the
daily demands of rehearsals for classical ballet dancers and to study the affects of short term low magnitude, high
frequency mechanical signals on bone mineral density and muscle power output in professional ballet dancers.
“Science”, “British Medical Journal” and numerous other magazine articles (General Practioner, Fitness
magazine, Elle), as well as in most national and local newspapers. I have also been interviewed on
Royal Air Force, and Royal Navy) nutrition and feeding policy, within military training establishments, UKbased
units (in barracks), and on UK overseas operations. The evidence gathering involves:
i. Examination of policy guidance and doctrine informing current provision, and the efficacy of the
current feeding model;
ii. Measurement of food provision (in dining facilities and from ration packs), and actual energy (dietary)
intakes of trainees and Service personnel;
iii. Measurement of estimated energy expenditures (during military physical training and on operations);
iv. Evaluation of MoD nutritional education provision and the understanding and awareness of nutrition by
Service personnel.
PUBLICATIONS
Fully refereed papers (201), those highlighted in bold are generally regarded the leading international journals
in my field. Note that three of these papers (#8, #19 and #34) are “citation classics”, having been cited over
100 times as identified from the Medline/ISI data bases, in the case of #34 over 300 times. I have also
included my contributions to edited works, book chapters, refereed abstracts and conference proceedings, letters
to the editor (including editorials), commissioned reports and invited review articles
