STUCK IN THE MIDDLE
Michael Sholly
By anyone’s standards it wasn’t a great week in sport
with the Ben Cousins drug issues coming to light in his
documentary, the allegations of match fixing against
the Pakistan cricket team involving up to a staggering
82 matches over the past two and a half years, and
disappointingly for the VAFA the postponement of the two
Under 19 Premier semi final matches.
We were fortunate that the Division 1 semi finals were able
to be re-located to Monash by late on Thursday afternoon
to ensure all of the senior finals were kept on track. Heavy
overnight rain on Tuesday and Wednesday proved costly as
the ground was not able to recover.
Similar issues are occurring as I write this column
(Tuesday) and we have declared Central Reserve unfit
for play for the rest of the finals series and Scammell this
week. Consequently we have to re-schedule matches to
accommodate these changes. It is in the Association’s best
interests to play matches where a gate can be taken but in
these times it is more important to get the matches played
with financial consideration taking a back seat.
It is important to realise that we are working through these
issues as they arise and all clubs should be on notice that
matches will be played on the weekend that the fixture is
scheduled. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee a Saturday
or a Sunday (apart from Sportscover) until all results are
known on a Sunday night. We endeavour to play matches
at the best possible facilities, providing all club officials
and supporters with the maximum opportunity to attend
matches.
We fully understand the need for coaches and administrators
to plan ahead, however we are working with limited
resources and consideration needs to be given to the
competition as a whole.
In spite of the issues, sixteen teams have already booked a
grand final berth, with five senior teams gaining promotion
for 2011. Going into the games last weekend, many
would have thought that some of these were clear cut. But
this is never the case in finals with some of the leading
fancies having a scare before eventually reigning supreme.
Werribee was down at half time, marginally ahead at
three quarter and headed in the final quarter, making for a
thrilling final fifteen minutes. The Tigers gritted their teeth
and responded as a good team does and for the first time
will be in Premier C in 2011.
Banyule was deemed the other good thing of the round as
it faced off against Glen Eira at Coburg City Oval. This
is a wonderful ground that I hope it is saved rather than
becoming inner city housing. It provided a magnificent
surface, equal to that of Sportscover Arena, for three
matches. Banyule began nervously and went into the first
break a couple of goals down. Whilst they gained the
ascendency in the second and third quarter they couldn’t
shrug off the well coached Glen Eira. Banyule’s ability did
prevail in the end and I am sure there were many relieved
people after the match.
Caulfield Grammarians were disappointed in their straight
sets departure last year and after securing a finals berth
very early on had their eyes firmly fixed on this fixture.
Steve Lawrence has done a terrific job and after a close first
half, the fields were able to edge away in the second to win
by four goals. So it’s back to Premier B with a bullet, but
before that a premiership battle awaits. I seem to remember
a team coming from C through to Premier just a couple of
seasons ago and picking up a pennant each year.
La Trobe and St John’s have been the standout teams in
Division 3 with little separating them. In this match, only
a couple of points split them at three quarter time before
a three goal to one final quarter by La Trobe gave them
promotion for the second consecutive year.
Monash Gryphons and Mt Lilydale were separated by only
percentage at the end of the home and away season but
recent form suggested that the Gryphons would prevail.
Three goals in front at quarter time and increasing this
by a goal each quarter saw them untroubled. There are
many positive reports emanating from East Caulfield about
the outstanding performance of Richard Osborne as he
prepares his charges for their first ever premiership, seniors
or reserves, in their twentieth VAFA season.
Another six teams will be promoted this weekend. Premier
Section action hots up with the loser of the Collegians
v Xavs match having to face a fired up De La in the
Preliminary Final. After kicking ten goals in the third term
and careering away to win by that margin, you can be rest
assured the winner will blow a sigh of relief.
Old Carey is on a stage where it has never been before –
Premier B finals at Sportscover Arena. Its match against
Old Haileybury is sure to test them as the Bloods are filled
with players who have had finals experience and will not
be fazed one bit by the occasion.
Is there a better way to celebrate Fathers’ Day than a
weekend of VAFA football?
DRIVEN DE LA DESTROY BATTERED BLUES
Michael Fitzgerald
It began well enough for the Varsity, but when it
missed some gettable shots, turned the ball over
in defence and key backman Al Austin limped
from the field, the signs were not good. Still,
Blues led at the first change and though their
other key defender Mark McLeod could barely
move, were still well in it at the half, though
seasoned watchers were wondering how that
could have been.
Early in the third team, De La blew it out to
31 points with some quick goals. Game over.
We thought so, anyway, until Blues suddenly
found their mojo. Immediately, their fumbling
and fiddling disappeared and they mustered the
confidence to play the corridor. Before anyone
realised it, the margin was back to six points.
Sensing trouble, De La lifted it another notch,
eliminating its own errors. For a while, the teams
went blow for blow, but then the Blue and Golds
blitzed them. We looked at the scoreboard as the
third quarter siren sounded. It showed a sixteen
goal scorefest, ten of them to the Dees, enough
to see them through. Uni Blues did their utmost
early in the last to disprove that, but the De La
forward line – Matt Moore, Josh Oakley, Sam
Pickett, Mick Duggan, Luke Semmel and best on
ground Nick Roberts (Leigh Harrison optional
extra) – pulled out the party tricks and the Dees
ran away. On the day, they had a staggering
fourteen goal scorers, and with the long kicking
of David Lowe and Michael Collins, everybody
had a chance to get in to the act.
It was a sad way for the Varsity to end its season,
but it was an unsettled line-up that they put on the
park. Blues needed to be at their best to stay with
the hard-running De La, and despite some great
efforts from Mark Paterson, Ben McConnell and
Paul Butko around the ball, they lacked a big gun
around the sticks. Jack Watts, Paddy Smith, Ed
Clark and Andrew Lowcock looked dangerous at
times, but none of them could muster the superhuman
game that would bring home the bacon.
DLS has been fine-tuning for a month now,
worried more about which of their in-form
players would miss selection. It will take a very
good team to beat them next week or in the end
game, but then again, there are two very good
teams standing in their way.
Sunday: Collegians arrive in the second semifinal
after just two losses, neither of which was to
Old Xaverians, whom it beat on Opening Day at
the Trott and again at Toorak Park in R12. The
big question is whether they can pull the hat-trick
and beat them at Sportscover, not quite the home
of the Red ‘n’ Blacks, but for a decade and a half,
their very own holiday resort.
While both teams are highly capable of shutting
down the opposition on a smaller field, the
attacking phase of each is suited to the spaces.
However, the expanse is one thing and the
conditions entirely another. We’ve all witnessed
games played almost entirely on the outer wing,
with the westerly serving as virtual prison walls
and forays into the corridor as rare as successful
jail breaks. In this circumstance, it’s about making
those shots at goal, when they come, count to the
maximum. Both clubs have topped the ton on six
occasions. Fergus Watts can be a big force here.
He rarely misses when in range and that ability
extends beyond the arc. Balancing this, Matthew
Handley and Dan Rush can score from distance
too. Perhaps it comes down to which team’s tall
forwards get more of it. Both defences are solid.
The Lions conceded a hundred just twice, and
over twenty per cent of their season points against
in just two mid-season defeats. Xavs are tighter
still, conceding the ton just once, to, you guessed
it, these Purples in R1, who also held the Xavs to
their season low offense in the return bout.
Xaverians should win in the ruck and their midfielders
should enjoy first use, but then they must
2 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010
steer their way through or around James Jorgensen
and Nick Stone, bogeymen that regularly haunt
them. Collegians’ speedsters will see plenty of
ball too, but penetrating the Xavs’ back six will
be like chipping away at granite.
Don’t expect the fireworks of last Sunday’s
encounter. This will be a more dour, conservative
affair. Collegians have lost just two games in
twenty-five and their success has been built on
discipline. They are an imposing bunch, with
plenty of top flighters including Trent Zimbachs,
Daniel Strahan, Shura Taft, the brothers Bull
and their great skipper Chris Blumfield. Xavs
have plenty of star power themselves, with Jon
Mercuri, skipper Matty Ball, Ryan Colbert and
Josh Agius, plenty of goalkickers and a rear guard
that boasts Damian Lynch, Nick Wynne and Dan
Noonan, all big, solid types who can also play
forward, as well as Andy Biddlecombe, one of
the strongest and finest players in the VAFA.
Choosing anyone over Xavs on the Plain is risky
business, but last time they met here, Collegians
won the day comfortably, turning it on in attack
while holding the Red ‘n’ Blacks. I sense a very
tough, tight tussle in less than optimum weather
and I can see a purple haze in my crystal ball. No
other team has consistently given Xavs as much
trouble as these Lions. Of course, all things must
pass.
NO-GO HOES! STUDENTS DELIVER THE LESSON
Fraser Cameron
As the new fibres on Blacks’ skipper Mark
Bolton’s troublesome hamstring continue to knit
neatly into position, he can thank his lucky stars
his team-mates attacked last weekend’s 1 st semifinal
against Old Ivanhoe with such tenacity as to
set the fancied Old Ivanhoe back on its heels from
the outset, ultimately a position from which the
Hoers never recovered.
Following solemnly in the footsteps of Luke
Mahoney, upon arrival at the front of the canteen
queue @ 1.10pm Neil Weatherson greeted me
warmly and I gleefully invested in my first ‘Wick
Burger for the season (a keenly anticipated delight
after the intense furore in R7 when Ormond’s home
game at Sportscover Arena was an apoplectic ‘Wick
burger-less affair). The good oil from my sources -
Chris McLennan, father of gun forward coach Pat
and the Godfather of Catholic football, John “I’ve
sired more Ammo games than most” Mount - was
that the Fruit Tingles had been jumped early by the
Krushers, but Dan Mahoney and Tim Duggan had
righted the ship by half time, and everything was in
order on SKOB Hill.
Still, true to script here were more than a few
scares in the SKOB camp in the final term when
the Krushers dragged themselves back from a 40
point deficit to within three goals before screwing
up two brilliant chances to narrow the gap further.
Paul O’Brien was great in mopping up a kick
behind play and delivering calmly by foot to
enable SKOB to wrest back control and finish off
with a comfortable win with goals to Tim Trewin
and Sam Ryan.
As we all waited for the main fixture there were
furtive glances upstairs as the Inner FM lads
heard whispers of a late change for Old Ivanhoe
(Sutherland for Meikeljohn). Dr Harry Costello
kindly gave me a quick tutorial on the Blacks’ fleet
of University six footers, and said he was quietly
confident they could out-run the tall timber from
Pine Lodge. I started to think maybe they had
planned things perfectly (save for that untimely
twang), as I’d earlier had a peep out the back
and noticed the Hoers were somewhat top-heavy.
Further Scott Curatolo was in deep discussion with
his coach, sporting a hip to ankle white leg-stocking.
Such is Curatolo’s value to the Pine-people, he was
to take the field despite being below his physical
best, as his leadership and footy-smarts would add
plenty to his young team.
The match itself started as a dour affair, with both
sides’ half back-lines clearing regularly, but then
failing to deliver effectively to their own forwards.
A few chances to the Hoers, particularly to Owen
Weatherly, weren’t capitalised upon, and after 12
minute the Blacks pounced and started to pile on
the pressure. After Josh Gaylor opened scoreboard
proceedings, BOG Charlie Richardson kicked the
first of his 4 goals, followed by a couple more as
the Blacks established the 4 goal lead they would
hold for the balance of the day. It was clear that
they were keen to move the ball swiftly by foot and
try to keep things simple as Jordan Foster proved
a useful target, despite close attention. What he
didn’t mark fell to their classy crumbing forwards
in Lacey and Drysdale, and they happily finished
off when required. The Hoers pegged a couple
back through Baldwin and Delmonte, but they still
trailed and weren’t able to bridge the gap.
For the Students, Nick Dubois did a terrific job
switching between centre-half-back and the ruck,
shading Butler and Bolzan in the process. Hamish
Guthrie, ostensibly supporting Walsh, proved
an inspired promotion to the senior side only the
previous week after 17 straight curtain-raisers!
However, the key area where the Blacks won
was the tireless running of the back-flankers and
wingmen such as Weekley, Batten and Torney.
Their defensive pressure was great, and their
offensive rebound even better. For the Hoers,
Stuart Low wouldn’t lie down and Ben Tremellen
was an effective target up forward. Otherwise, they
were comprehensively outplayed and now lick
their wounds until April 2011 arrives.
THIS WEEK: Now we turn our attention to the
quest for promotion, and another week off before
the Big Dance. It’s almost everyone’s flag favourite
in Old Carey seemingly with one hand on the cup
4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010
against Lappa’s wildcards from Badlands. David
Lappage should be commended for moulding his
group together as a blend of the obligatory ex-
AFL guns with plenty of refreshingly home-grown
talent coming from the school. Spencer Roberts
and Matthew Douglas have added plenty this
season, whilst Hamish and Jarrod McLauchlan
have relished another season together. Up front,
no-one could possibly deny the enduring quality of
Tony Brown and Brett Voss, and it is for this reason
the Bloods are in with a genuine show today.
The opponents are probably a little more even in
their output, and boast a miserly defence led by
Luke Crozier, Lachie McQueen-Miscamble and
the likely G. T. Moore medallist Grant Baldwin.
Julien Rowe has been brilliant this season, and
combined with Brendan Huf, Glen Parker and
particularly Jarrod Reid the forward-line boasts
enough firepower to seriously trouble the Bloods
defenders. The game will be won by the side that
can get plenty out of their support cast, and it is
for this reason I’m leaning towards Old Carey.
They may not have the out-and-out guns of Old
Haileybury, but the Panthers ‘bat deeper’ with
the experience of Parton, Josephs, Kent (!) and
Tommy Evans to call upon in trying times. For this
reason, in the immortal words of Norm Nugent......I
select......
Old Carey by 16 points.
For those keen to get down early, watch out for
SKOB in the Thirds and Bernies in the Reserves,
with Andrew Smith to grab BOG honours.
PREMIER C
THEN THERE WERE THREE, UMPIRES ARE HUMAN TOO
Di Langton
So much love between Premier C and the
Umpires last week. During both semi finals at
Trevor Barker there was a lot of discussion all
around the sunny seaside oval; maybe it was the
euphoria of finals footy, the salty sea air, or the
fact that there seemed to be umpires everywhere.
There were three of them running around on the
field, and plenty sprinkled throughout the crowd;
those unlucky to score a final showed up to watch
their mates. Surely they’re not so different from
the rest of us? Dan Lawlor (correctly and bravely
) reversed a free to Old Camberwell right in front
of their bench. Both games saw some highly
controversial decisions that were received with
understandable passion and parochialism. At
the VAFAUA annual dinner on Monday night,
umpires were honoured with numerous awards,
just as coveted and revered amongst their
number as any footy club gong. Winner of this
year’s Golden Whistle award, Dave Anselmi,
is enjoying the heady heights of Premier and
Representative footy these days, but he talked
with terrific passion about his time in C Grade,
the quality of football and the great interaction he
enjoyed with our clubs.
Second Semi Review
Beaumaris and Caulfield Grammarians got down
to an arm-wrestle from the first bounce. Dean
Scheetz’s strength across the Caulfield backline
and the versatile Gav Winter’s clearing kicks
from half back flank and through the middle
were particularly punishing. For the Sharks,
Chris Langdon’s second and third efforts were
impressive and Luke McNicholas (3) was a focus
up forward in only his fourth senior game this
year. The half time margin was ten points and the
crowd was on tenterhooks. Dougie Ensor’s big
heart continues to underpin the Beauy backline,
while Sean Coote brings an impact at both ends
of the ground, but it was Tom Dean who kicked
two of his three goals to get the Sharks within
4 points in an inspiring display after teammate
Atkins was red-carded midway through the
third. The Field’s Justin Perkins answered the
challenge with a monster on the run from fifty,
and Brett Sinclair nailed two in quick succession
then hobbled off just before three quarter time. At
the huddle Jason Mifsud dismissed any minor
premier smugness, “it’s performance you get
measured by,” he said.
That’s something Steve Lawrence knows all
about following Caulfield’s disappointment last
year. He may well have echoed Mifsud’s exact
same words at the Caulfield huddle, their 21
point lead handy but not comfortable enough.
Beaumaris came out determined and unrelenting,
scoring the first goal and refusing to lie down.
The pivotal moment came from Widjaja on
centre wing at around the 17 minute mark. With
silky skills he got the ball over to Hyland who
handballed to Slevison running through to nail
his fourth goal and a twenty point buffer. It
was a thing of beauty; the teamwork, class and
instinctive play admired by every supporter.
Beauy didn’t stop though, they fought on to the
end, a four goal loss.
First Semi Review
Much less an arm-wrestle and more a shot-to-thearm
for AJAX in their 66-point destruction of Old
Camberwell who bow out in a respectable fourth
finish for the year. Still without spearhead David
Fayman, Ajax certainly didn’t lack scoring
options with reliable youngster Jake Lew, highflying
Jason Seidl and the enigmatic Eugeni
Routman breaking the lines and providing the
impetus with his long ranging kicks into the
forward line. Ben Hart and Phil Bennett were
very good but the Weller midfield was literally
swamped by the ferocious Jacka tackling, their
backline a fortress with evergreen Danny
‘Wisey’ Weislitzer superb, as was Warren
6 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010
Steinberg’s precision disposal. Camberwell was
sorely missing the spark they normally get from
Hough, while Craven and Wilson were also
out. The Wellers offer no excuses, Killer very
clear the game was a “stepping stone, a learning
curve” for his younger players in their first taste
of senior finals.
Preliminary Final Preview
Beaumaris is a proud club and will have
nothing short of a grand final berth as its focus,
its players will lay their hearts and guts out to
get there. Against Caulfield it seemed apparent
their difference in height was a factor across the
ground. AJAX can certainly match the Sharks for
ferocity and endeavour, they were awesome last
Sunday and I think their bigger bodies will again
be the difference. Yet if players like Petering and
Fayman (if he plays) rise to the occasion, finesse
will play a larger role, particularly at the scoring
ends. But if the AJAX team that shows up today
is the disciplined, skilful and relentless side we
saw last weekend, Beauy won’t withstand them.
BEES BOOK A BERTH IN THE BIG DANCE
Rees Quilford
Werribee secured promotion to Premier C but
more importantly claimed a spot in the big dance
when they held off a determined and straight
kicking Monash outfit. On the other side of town,
North Old Boys/St Pat’s secured a hard-fought
14-point victory over Peninsula and will face
off against the Blues in the Preliminary final this
weekend.
In a much improved showing from the previous
week, the Blues took it right up to the minor
premiers for the entirety of their match at St
Bernard’s. The game opened with a nine goal
shootout and established a number of trends that
continued throughout much of the day. Most
obvious difference was the in the accuracy of the
two sides, the Bees squandered some gettable
opportunities to record 4.5 while their opposition
had the kicking boots on from the outset. 5.2 for
the term delivered the Blues a three-point lead
at quarter time. The second term continued in
much the same vein, Tommy Craven and Tim
McKenzie were repeatedly setting up play for
the Blues and, despite getting plenty of attention,
Stef Callea was the Bees everywhere man. Three
goals to two saw Monash take a six point lead
into the main change.
With the likes of McCutcheon, Morrish and
Tedeso winning plenty of it for the Bees and with
Smyth, Young and Frater doing likewise for the
Blues, the floodgates opened for both sides in
the third term. The willingness of the Werribee
forwards to put head over the ball saw them
rewarded with a number of free kicks close to
goal while Monash continued to convert their
opportunities and apply scoreboard pressure.
Eleven majors for the term had spectators
enthralled and put the contest on a knife edge
at the final change. An entertaining finish had
momentum swings, desperation and flair. Both
sides kicked five majors but it was the number
of opportunities generated by the Bees that got
them over the line in end. The ten point margin
was testament to the closeness of the contest.
Both sides had a good spread of goal kickers, Lee
and Panayi were the most damaging for the Bees
with four apiece while Gareth Smyth and Tommy
Craven kicked three each for Monash. Collins,
Parsons, Cunnington and Hickey also bobbed up
as multiple goal kickers for the Blues.
The result sends Monash into a sudden death
Preliminary final with NOBs but if they manage
to secure a Grand Final berth they will go in
confident in their ability to match the Bees.
Sunday’s 1 st Semi Final had North Old Boys/St
Pats taking on the Peninsula Pirates at Frearson
Reserve. The game opened as a relatively even
affair; with both sides diving headlong into every
contest scoring was difficult. On the back of
the repeated and polished efforts from the likes
of Matt Keown and Chris Horsley, NOBs led
by a kick at the first change. The second term
was played in a similar fashion, the physicality
of both sides made space difficult to find. Cade
Bannister and Nick Fisher were again rock solid
down back for the Pirates but Todd Patterson
also looked dangerous up forward for NOBs.
Both sides missed several gettable chances on
goal throughout the term but once again NOBs
slightly shaded their opponents on the scoreboard
and took a 13-point lead into the main break.
While the opening half delivered just six majors,
it had been an enthralling tussle and set the scene
for an epic second half.
The pressure didn’t relent thereafter but the game
did open up somewhat in the third term. As he
has done all year skipper Shaun Payze led the
charge for the Pirates, attacking every contest
8 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010
like his life depended on it. He found ample
support from Ben Southam who was particularly
damaging. Four goals for the term saw the Pirates
work their way back into the contest. They didn’t
have it all their own way, equal measures of
desperation and polish from the likes of Gillett
and Thomson as well as an economical return of
3.1 for the term meant NOBs limited the damage
of the Pirate resurgence. With just eight points
separating the two sides at the final change, the
game was up for grabs.
The respective midfields went at it like starving
pigeons fighting over a half eaten sandwich
but it was the boys from Brunswick’s ability to
capitalise on opportunities that told in the end.
Three final term majors sealed a hard-fought 14
point win and left the Pirates to lament a wasteful
final term return of 1.5.
The victory secures North Old Boys/St Pat’s
a Preliminary final berth at St Bernard’s. With
the 2010 ledger between the NOBs and Monash
standing at 1-1 and a margin of just eight points
having separated the sides in encounters, it is a
game that shapes as a cracker.
DIVISION 2
DA BEARS AND DAVE BOUNDY
James Coyne
Banyule will be in Division One next season
after narrowly defeating an inspired Glen Eira
unit by 11 points. The boys from Banyule were
very lucky to get away with Saturday’s win.
Glen Eira jumped them and was three goals up
at quarter time. The Bears responded and got
back to playing great flowing footy in the second
quarter by kicking six goals to one. At half time
Banyule led by 15 points and were looking to
build on that in the second half.
However Glen Eira came out after the long break
and played the same intense style that they had
played in the first quarter. Glen Eira dominated
the mid-field but due but the backline of Banyule
stood up and were well on top, limiting the
Saints ability to score. This was thanks largely
to Michael Christian, David Drapac and Luke
French. Banyule outscored Glen Eira by a goal
to go in with a very handy 21 point lead. And
when the Bears kicked the first goal to lead by
27 points, the writing was beginning to be appear
on the wall for the Saints. To their credit, Glen
Eira continued to fight and put Banyule under a
heap of pressure. But with three minutes to go,
Glen Eira got to within 11 points and would
ultimately fall short by that margin, much to the
relief of the Bears. As predicted, Ash Brown was
the difference booting eight majors. Glen Eira
should be commended and especially Stefan
Krull, Andrew Spink and Michael Kohout.
Scott Diamond was efficient booting three goals.
Glen Eira will look to meet the Bears again, but
first must face a high flying Old Paradians.
An eight goal haul from Dave Boundy ended
Old Westbourne’s tilt at the premiership, Old
Paradians winning the ticket by 38 points. The
game started promisingly for both sides and just
seven points separated them at the end of the first
quarter to the Raiders advantage. Unfortunately
for the Warriors, Old Paradians went on to extend
that margin to 29 points at the long change. With
Boundy doing as he pleased, the Warriors lacked
one of their own to take a grip of the game,
though they had plenty who tried to do so. Chris
Hudson, Damien Lockwood, and Paul Hudson
fought bravely for Westbourne, but the margin
at three quarter time blew out to 34 points. The
last quarter was Westbourne’s best, but only the
inaccuracy of the Raiders allowed the winning
margin to stay underneath fifty points. Brent
Richardson and Daniel Mahony were key
contributors towards winning the opportunity to
face Glen Eira for a Grand Final spot.
Reserves: Banyule defeated Bentleigh by 12
points. In a classic game between the two best
teams in D2 reserves, it was the Bears that took
the grand final spot, six goals to none second
quarter. Bentleigh rallied in the last to boot five
goals to one but ultimately paid the price for
their slow start. The best for Banyule was Scott
Playfair, Matt Eifermann and Mark Smith.
While for Bentleigh, Mick McCullagh and Rex
Coles stood up as did Bobby Bennett. Meeting
Bentleigh for a Grand Final spot against Banyule
will be Old Paradians after the Raiders took
apart Old Westbourne to the tune of 56 points.
The Warriors couldn’t find a way to goal as
Paradians sealed the game in the second half.
Anthony Posterino and David Salvatico were
the best for Old Paradians while for Josh Lawn
was terrific for Westbourne.
THIS WEEK: Fighting for spots in the D2 Grand
Final will be Glen Eira and Old Paradians.
And after the performances the two sides put on
show last, it will be a hotly fought contest. Again,
David Boundy and Chris Kandilakis were be
the measuring stick on how far the Raiders will
go. For Glen Eira, they will need to play at the
same intensity to get over the line against a very
talented team. Stefan Krull, Andrew Spink,
10 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010
Mick Kohout and Tom Paterson will all need
big games to book a place in the 2010 Grand
Final. I’m tipping Old Paradians by a kick.
Moving onto the Reserves, Bentleigh will want
to avoid going out in straight sets. While for the
Raiders, they will go into the match confident of
achieving a boil over. Worryingly for Bentleigh,
their best player, Elliot Box, had a quiet afternoon
but I doubt we will so again. Old Paradians will
need to bring the same defensive pressure that
got them over the line against the Warriors for
them to knock over Bentleigh. Mark Ryan, Ben
Vincent and David Daniele again will need to
fire. Bentleigh’s hope of a berth remains on three
men; Aaron Clough, Clinton Montabobo and
Timothy Dale. Bentleigh by 31 points.
DIVISION 3
PARADISE LOST AND FOUND
Jonathan Hibbert
You meet some interesting folk on the Pakenham
line. They breed them considerate in that neck
of the woods. The garden variety stab-firstask-for-money-later
addict that I’m used to on
the Craigeburn line would’ve been out of his
depth chatting to ‘Robert,’ my companion from
Richmond to Huntingdale stations at the weekend:
“Scuse me sir, got a coupla bucks please?” “Nah,
sorry mate.” “Oh, that’s ok sir.” After retreating
and enquiring as to the financial state of the rest of
the carriage, Robert sidled up to me and attempted
to strike up a conversation about my iPod: “Go on
mate, give us a look, eh.” “Nah mate, don’t think
so.” “Go on, eh.” “Nah mate.” After some further
to-ing and fro-ing re my portable music machine,
as his hands shook with methadone withdrawal, a
most unexpected profession spurted from Robert’s
spittle covered lips. As his bloodshot eyes bored
into my skull he gave a knowing chuckle: “You
read Paradise Lost mate? Satan’s my favourite
character.” Slightly shocked, I looked at Robert’s
yellow grin and told him that I hadn’t read Milton’s
epic poem on love, betrayal, good and evil. Yes, it
was that sort of train ride.
The walk from Huntingdale station to
W.A.Scammell Reserve is short, ten maybe fifteen
minutes. The exhaust rises off North Road, but
all of a sudden, turning off the main road, among
the gums and council pines sits Scammell, home
of the Krushers. It’s green, moist, got a fence, and
the smell of dimmies and pies wafts gently from
the clubrooms all the way to the opposite side.
To Power House, who had hardly trained on their
own ground due to council restrictions, this was a
Garden of Eden.
Other matches had been moved there from
Central Reserve, so by game-time Saturday, two
curtainraisers had already been played, and the
middle was a glue pit. Immediately after the first
ball-up, the ball was greasy and clagged, and the
play reflected this: tight, physical, muddy and ugly.
Frequent fumbles and mishandlings dominated as
play see-sawed, neither side taking advantage, until
the Pikemen slotted two majors, and the Falcons
were left goalless for the term.
The second stanza saw the ‘House break ahead by
a few more straight kicks. Saraw simply teleported
to every clearance, rushing forward, as Matt Taylor
dropped a few marks, missed a few shots, and
finally kicked straight. As ‘House forward thrusts
broke upon the Falcon backline, Albert Park
dominated possession in the quarter’s midsection.
Constantly probing down the eastern wing saw
Murnane take a grab, deep in the pocket. Lining up
beneath the shadows of the gums, he drove home
a fantastic goal, and the blue and red stripes were
invigorated, if still behind by four goals going into
half time.
Pike strode menacingly from the rooms, sun
glinting off the imposing scalp, moments before
his charges turned up the volume in the rooms,
and came out frightening, covered in mud, like
vengeful renegades from Apocalypse Now. In
contrast, Albert Park ran from the race looking
unfortunately cowed, a portent of things to come.
A quick goal to Matt Treeby was shortly followed
by a Leske long bomb, Power House’s older and
bigger bodies prevailing around the frequent and
tight hard ball gets. Though Nathan Wheeler and
Will McIndoe provided moments of inspiration,
Albert Park were hamstrung as their backline
allowed ‘House players to run wild. The quarter’s
highlight was David Burnside’s magnificent run
down the western wing, delivering to Taylor, where
another conversion stimulated horns to blast from
the southern end and Power House consolidated an
almost unbeatable position.
A vast huddle surrounded Pike’s final address,
contrasting with a markedly disparate few peppered
around Coach Dallas’ three quarter time address,
while McIndoe urged the Falcons to respond: “No
point holding back now boys, take the game on,
take it on.”
The final term was a mere formality, Power
House holding off any futile Albert Park charges
with aplomb. Mr. Pavlou, the ‘House’s president
remarked with pride upon the proliferation of
12 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010
supporters for his mob, pointing out the numerous
onlookers: “Old boy, old boy, life member, life
member, life member.” Well he should be proud
as well, for Power House ascend to a preliminary,
clutching at premiership glory.
The second semi yielded the most intense game
I’ve seen this season, as the two premier sides faced
off in a battle for definite promotion, and a grand
final berth. A long line of St Johns’ jackets graced
the clubhouse wing, and witnessed their boys get
out to a short lead, clean play stifled by the filthy,
smelly quagmire that comprised the centre square.
Brendan Wood’s ruckwork paid dividends for
the Students, as he consistently thumped the pill
goalwards, where Terry Ludeman lined up on the
boundary, 45 out. A magnificent kick provoked
screams of joy from female spectators, as La
Trobe yapped at the JOC’s heels. Spurred on, Matt
Clark, managed to find space through the middle
somehow, delivering to Cachia, who summarily
converted. As Giddy Up Ganino lept around La
Trobe’s forward line, Danger Patten managed to
snag two, one a gift in the goal square, courtesy
of a free kick.
A noteworthy effort on the south-eastern flank
distinguished Ganino as he harassed St John’s
providing second, third and fourth efforts not
typical of a forward. Meanwhile, an early McMeel
goal put the wind up St John’s who might just have
felt a little nervous, as the Brewers crept to 22
point lead. Though two clearances in two minutes
to Rohan Scott allowed St John’s to quickly nail
a few, and after some impressive handballing in
close, a Gary Roberts snap cut the gap to just three
points at the final break.
Ludemans words were subsumed by eager Students:
“Desire, ferocity, intensity. This is our chance!”
East wing flair from Xavier Shiels, and inspired
play from the flowing red locks of Dillon Farrell,
combined with Joe Mclean’s all round brilliance
engendered a Dunstall-like one-hander from Tom
‘Cliff’ Harding deep in La Trobe’s forward line.
Down but not out, St John’s still managed to get
plenty of the ball, consistently having a loose man
behind and to the sides of packs. However, they
were caught out tactically, playing to the flanks in
forward pushes, cast adrift by the central mudpit.
A fantastic running goal to Phillip Ward sparked
hope, but the intensity of La Trobe’s prolonged
attacks took their toll, the JOCs succumbing by
only 14 points, a margin that even then does not
befit the intensity and closeness of the contest.
This Week: St John’s will be like a bear backed
into a corner; dangerous and scary, while Power
House look to gain a premiership berth for the
first time in a while. If it’s wet and muddy, and not
conducive to running play, the Pikemen should get
up in a close contest. If St John’s can run and carry,
they will stand and deliver, so I’ll say a win to the
JOC’s, the ‘House an outside chance.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010 13
DIVISION 4
BACK TO THE FUTURE
Jim Sutton
Monash Gryphons have repeated the deeds of so
many D3 demotees before them by making their
stay in the bottom grade a short one, and will return
from whence they came in 2011. Meanwhile South
Mornington’s season came to an end after a topsy
turvy clash against Manningham.
Second Semi – Monash Gryphons vs Mt
Lilydale
Mt Lilydale gave Manningham a four goal start the
previous week in the Qualifying Final, and clearly
didn’t learn their lesson as they again struggled to
get out of second gear early in their clash with the
Gryphons. The margin remained at a manageable
level after a tighter second term, before the
Gryphons switched on the afterburners early in the
third and got out to an almost ten goal lead. The
Rams bunkered down and took a big chunk out of
the deficit by the last change, but were unable to
maintain the momentum in the last as the Gryphons
steadied and ran out to a comfortable victory. Mt
Lilydale racked up more inside 50’s for the day
but couldn’t hit their targets up forward, and their
turnovers were punished by the Gryphons who
played clean skilful football up the ground on the
rebound resulting in many scoring opportunities.
Mick Malloy (5 goals) had a day out at half
forward for the Gryphons, Lee Wells and Luke
Wilson were terrific turning defence into attack,
and Chris Leeton was strong in the ruck, but will
be anxiously awaiting the outcome of a tribunal
appearance this week. For the Rams, Michael
Rhodes played his best game for the season in
a ruck roving role, Mark Gower was solid in
defence all day, and Al Stuart in the midfield and
Haydn Moyes on a wing both provided plenty of
run.
First Semi – Manningham Cobras vs South
Mornington
Great conditions for the Sunday game which was
played at a very fast pace from the outset. The
Cobras had the best of the early going before
South Mornington hit back late in the quarter to
take a narrow lead at the first change. In the second
quarter it was all South Mornington, who were full
of run and cleaner with the footy, taking a four
goal advantage into half time. The Cobras had to
re-group and with some key positional moves,
Manningham quickly clawed back the lead in the
third taking a slight advantage into the final break.
The last quarter was a tense close battle, with both
sides missing some crucial shots on goal and the
Cobras finally coming away with the 11 point
victory. Great season for the Tigers, who started
0-3 but in the end took a step up from last year, and
with another season under their belts the young
club will be anticipating a big 2011.
For the Cobras, Stevie Sheales second half, and
in particular his run was superb. Big Terry Young
was outstanding all day, and Andrew Coonan also
provided excellent run. Sam Wright and Kyle
Gascoigne both completed great finals series for
South, while Jacob Riordan and Matt Killen
were others to perform well on the day.
This week:
Preliminary Final – Mt Lilydale vs Manningham
Cobras
Third meeting in the last five weeks for this pair,
who by 5pm on Saturday will probably be sick of
the sight of each other. Of course with a 0-3 record
against the Rams this year, the Cobras may already
be feeling a little queasy. Preliminary finals are
often the most tense matches of the year with the
last promotion spot up for grabs, with the loser
going unrewarded for a season of sweat and toil
while the winner gets a big prize regardless of the
result the following week. Hard to ignore the form
line of Mt Lilydale who have only lost twice this
season and if they can turn around their slow starts
of the last two weeks, they should be too good
and advance to a Grand Final showdown with the
Gryphons.
In the reserves North Brunswick came close to
toppling the Gryphons last week and will be keen
to get the job done against Swinburne Uni and set
up a rematch next week.
RISING STAR
VAFA RISING STAR 2010 – THE FINAL FIVE
Tim Allan – Ormond
Performed with distinction in the U19 rep game against
the VCFL, Tim’s exceptional form continued throughout
the season leading to his Round 13 nomination.
Remarkably, Tim has been named Ormond’s best
player on 6 occasions in 2010 and been in their best 12
times from 17 matches and must be close to a certainty
for their Best and Fairest award this season.
Tom Campbell – Old Scotch
A shining light at Old Scotch this season, Tom
was nominated in Round 17 after a string of top
performances for both his club and the VAFA at U19
and U23 level. A ruckman with a big future, many
AFL clubs have cast their eye over his work and we
could see his name in lights over the summer. Tom was
named in Old Scotch’s best 11 times from 16 matches
which shows both his quality and consistency.
Daniel Nicholson – Uni Blues
Nominated in Round 9 and touted as a possible draft
selection at the end of this season, Daniel has lived up
to the hype in 2010 despite some close checking by
opposition players. Named in the best for the VAFA’s
SHARPSHOOTERS
TOP OF THE CHARTS
U19 and U23 representative matches this season,
Dan had been named in the best for Uni Blues on 7
occasions.
Daniel Noonan – Old Xaverians
Nominated in Round 2, Dan’s exceptional early form
continued throughout the season and he will be a big
part of Old Xaverians’ finals ambitions. Named one of
the best for the VAFA U19 side against the VCFL in
June, Dan has been named in the Xavs’ best 12 times
this season.
Callum Pohl – Old Trinity
Nominated in Round 3, Callum demonstrated his
talent very early in his first season in the VAFA by
being named in Old Trinity’s best in 7 of their first 8
matches. An excellent contributor to the VAFA U19
sides win over the VCFL, Callum finished the season
off well, being in the best in 3 of the last 5 matches and
is certain to feature prominently in the end of season
club awards.
The winner of the 2010 Club Warehouse Rising Star
Award will be announced at the VAFA’s Big Night
ED NOTE: Opening paragraph may offend some
readers. Please look away.
I’m back. I hope I was missed as much as I enjoyed a
ten day hiatus in sunny Fiji relaxing, tanning myself,
imbibing in the fine local beers and swimming in the
customary “budgie smugglers”, a sight to behold for
sure.
ED NOTE: It’s safe to look now.
Bit of a culture shock to come back to a freezing cold
wet and windy Melbourne, but the game we play
is a winter sport so we must adapt and play to the
prevailing conditions.
Rounds 16, 17 and 18 came and went in my absence as
finals positions were settled with all the clubs priming
themselves for the big dance that is September.
All the celebrities who had graced the playing fields
through the months of April to August seem to have
disappeared as all the sides settled down for the run
home with genuine dew kickers striving to achieve
the ultimate success.
As all my fellow scribes are in the process of selecting
their Team of the Year, down here something different
will happen as we will name the Celebrity Team of
the Year. So if you have any celebrities at your club
please nominate them by sending details to me at the
address below.
And so to the football. Almost perennial grand
finalists Old Xaverians made an unexpected early
exit from the Premier Reserve race when they were
comprehensively beaten by a very impressive Old
Melburnians unit. Obviously missed the firepower of
Dangerous Dan up forward.
St Kevin’s made up for the disappointment of their
senior comrades by having a good win over a gallant
Oakleigh and advancing to the Preliminary Final.
Caulfield Grammarians set the tone of their day by
overpowering Ormond and advancing to the Grand
Finale. Mazenod were too strong for the Oggers and
live to fight another day in their quest to go back to
back.
Monash Blues were first to the last game of the year
in Division 1 and they can now sit back and relax and
wait to see whether it will be Whitefriars again or
NOBS who will join them.
In Division 2 Banyule also made it a double for
the club by just getting over Bentleigh, while a
pretty impressive Old Paradians unit had no trouble
overwhelming a disappointing Old Westbourne.
UHSVU advanced to the big dance in Division 3 and
look forward to the challenge of facing either Yarra
Valley or Powerhouse in a fortnight’s time.
Out at Vermont, Division 4 produced the game of the
week, with Monash Gryphons and North Brunswick
playing a belter. Scores level when the final bell tolled.
But the Gryphs inspired by the efforts of perhaps their
best ever seconds player Vaughan Coffey managed to
regain lost momentum and come home with a nine
point victory, against a very gallant North Brunswick,
who must now beat Swinburne Uni to earn the right
for another crack at the boys from East Caulfield.
Finals pressure made individual high scores a little
harder to come by with Roderick Matthews and
Shane Hamilton topping the list with five.
Cameron Raine, Nick O’Hare, Peter Shepherd, Mark
Smith Ben Seeger and Thomas Kennedy all had the
twin calicos raised 4 times, with Hamish Turner,
Hamish Townsend, Dean Spanos, Joss Holdsworth,
Scott Niewand, Scott Playfair, Shaun McKenzie,
Brandon Hunt, Brett Dintinosante, Michael Patena,
Robert Mundy, and Joshua Carroll all scoring hat
tricks.
This week’s Selections; University Blues, University
Blacks, Mazenod, NOBS, Old Paradians, Powerhouse
and North Brunswick.
THIRDS
BLACKS AND DARK BLUES GO THROUGH
Richard Hummerston
Sportscover Arena was the main stage for both
games this week as the curtain fell on the seasons
of Uni Blues and St Bernard’s.
The clash between Uni Blacks and St Bernard’s
kicked off the first ever finals series for Thirds
Football. Before the bounce, Uni Blacks were
clear favourites as they had triumphed over
Bernies in the two prior meetings, one of them by
more than 100 points. What unfolded surprised
even the most optimistic Snow Dog fan, but in
the end, there was disappointment.
With the first bounce just marginally after dawn,
it took 15 minutes and some magic from Thomas
Whale until the goals started flowing. Going into
the first break with a two goal buffer and stifling
the dangerous David Kavanagh, many thought
the last three quarters would be a mere formality
for Uni Blacks.
That was until James Mount and Andrew
Cianter developed a severe case of leather
poisioning and the Bernies went into the rooms
down by only a kick.
Leading by three goals at the last break, victory
looked certain for the Blacks. However a speech
better than Al Pacino’s ‘inches speech’ fired the St
Bernard’s boys up and had them slotting the first
two of the last quarter. Alas for the brave dogs,
usual suspects Paul Kelly and Jeremy Nettlefold
ensured that the Blacks were victorious, thus
sending them to the preliminary final to face the
loser of next weeks 2 nd semi-final.
Old Melburnians comfortably accounted for
Uni Blues, owing to an incredible seven goal
third quarter. Ed Hughes earned best afield
honours while Dave Marshall did his best for
the vanquished.
This week in the second semi finals, I’m selecting
Old Xavs to defeat De La Salle to advance to
another Grand Final, while Banyule will be
victorious over St Kevin’s.
In the C Section preliminary final Caulfield
Grammarians missed opportunities (0.5) in the first
quarter while Oakleigh scored 3.1 to take the honours
early. Five goals each in the second term showed the
evenness of the two teams. There were plenty of goals
in a high standard third quarter but Oakleigh took a 20
point lead into the last and although the Grammarians
never gave up, it was Oakleigh who proceeded into
the grand final, 20.6 to 16.9. Best – Lamb, S Doherty,
Bromley (7), T Doherty, J Rutter, Barrand (Oakleigh)
and T Sundberg, Widjaja, Slevison (7), Colosimo,
Parsons, Noblett (Caulfield).
In D1 Section prelim Fitzroy led Werribee from go
to whoa and ran out winners 13.8 to 7.6 in a game
that was scrappy early but saw a better standard in
the second half. Best – MacKay, Atherton, Meighen,
Cahill, Clark, Dullard (Fitzroy) and Antonello,
McCutcheon, Addamo, Dean, Palmington, Lee
(Werribee).
5 Years Ago – 2005
In D2 Rupertswood deservedly won their way into
the Grand Final with a resounding win over Peninsula
Old Boys, courtesy of a magnificent 8 goal haul from
spearhead Leigh Brennan. Rupertswood were never
really threatened before winning 15.5 to 5.15. Best –
Collins, Burrows, J Plummer, Brennan (8), Spinner,
Reid (Rupertswood) and Parsons, Prendergast,
Ferguson, Pratt, Murray, Wood (Peninsula).
It was a cracking prelim final in D3 Section between
St Johns and West Brunswick. The Westies had
finished in fourth spot but were looking good for a
shot at the title, holding a 29 point lead at half time. St
Johns came out after half time with all guns blazing
and had the lead by three quarter time, albeit 4 points.
The final quarter was typical prelim final pressure
with players throwing everything they had into each
contest. In the end the St Johns boys held on to win
12.13 to 12.12. Best – Arnold, Sinclair, Ryan (5),
Pickering, Skinner, O’Connor (StJ) and Benjamin
(7), Jelbart, Millard, Irving, Pietsch, West (WB).
10 Years Ago – 2000
Therry Penola won their way into B Section with a
6 goal win over AJAX in the C Section preliminary
final. It was a fluctuating contest in the first half with
Therry taking the advantage in the first quarter while
the AJAX boys tended to dominate the second term
and should have held more than the 10 point lead.
With the breeze at their back in the third quarter,
Therry Penola stunned their opposition with a 9 goal
to 1 display with the Bannister brothers setting the
standard. When Therry kicked the first major in the
final term, it spelt curtains for AJAX although they
rallied temporarily. The final score of 18.14 to 12.14
was a fair indication of the difference between the two
teams. Best – R Bannister (4), S Bannister, Edwards,
O’Sullivan, Nancarrow, Mills (Therry) and M Segal
(3), Weisler, Rajch, Dukes, Kalinski, Davis (AJAX).
Wayne Hinton and Graeme Thwaites (Field), Bob
Mutton and Jon Vincent (Boundary) and Stephen
Leahy and Kevin Segota (Goal) read like a who’s
who of the umpiring fraternity. John Toohey (Therry)
and Wayne Harmes (AJAX) were the coaches.
Old Essendon earned another crack at Caulfield
Grammarians by winning the D1 Section Preliminary
Final, 12.8 to Monash Blues 8.13. Essendon’s 6.2
to 0.2 in the first quarter was the telling period of
the game with Lutterschmidt and Evans leading the
Monash defence a merry dance. The Blues fought
back in the second term but could not close the gap
and by three quarter time, the game had tightened
up considerably and Essendon were able to hold off
Monash who inaccuracy was costly. Best – Cetin,
Ryan, Lutterschmidt (6), Cippolini, D Fletcher,
McPherson (OE) and Hawkins (4), Dowsley, Furnell,
McGee, Caldwell, Holloway (Monash). Mark Gibson
and Craig O’Donoghue were the field umpires.
20 Years Ago – 1990
The A Section second semi final resulted in
favourites, Collegians, comfortably accounting for
Ormond 19.17 to 15.7 and the Lions had led all
day after establishing their superiority in the first
quarter, 5.6 to 3.0. The goals were well spread for
Collegians Schober, Wallace, Berzins and Mount all
with 3 goals. Carboon and Schuhkraft kicked 4 and
3 respectively but Ormond struggled all around the
ground to contain the Lions’ machine. The Monds
would need to call on their past finals’ experience
in the preliminary final against Marcellin to have
another crack at the strong Collegians’ line-up.
Old Haileybury demolished Kew in the B Section
second semi final and although expected to win
easily, no one expected the 29.15 to 9.14 score line.
Kraus (7) and Waldron (5) led the way in front of
22 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010
goals and with Kidgell dominating the ruck and
McKenzie dominating in the centre, Haileybury were
never troubled. Royston, Bradley and Harrison tried
their hardest for Kew.
Uni Blacks won their way back into the C Section with
an easy win over Fawkner 14.10 to 7.12 and came
from behind at half time. Best – Glover, Radford,
Russell, J Gray, Shaddock, Garde and Heath kicked 7
for the Blacks. B Young, S Barrett, Busst, G Young,
Majerczak and O’Leary were Fawkner’s best.
State Bank defeated Whitefriars in the D Section
Preliminary Final 16.14 to 12.17. Best – Gneil, Short,
T Maher, Andrews, Jenkins (4), Dervan (State Bank)
and Hay, Houston, M White, Crowe, Jenkins, Midro
(Whitefriars).
30 Years Ago – 1980
In A Section Uni Blues went straight into the Grand
Final after defeated De La sale 12.9 to 11.8 in the
second semi. With the breeze De La opened at a big
lead at quarter time, 6.2 to 0.1 and the Blues were still
9 points down at half time. De La again kicked clear
(27 points) by three quarter time but the Blues stormed
home with 5.4 while holding the D’s scoreless in the
last. Best – Yeo, Tyquin, Dobbie, Carne, Wilson,
Cortese (Blues) and M Greene, R McHenry, Cooke,
B Bourke, Hanrahan, Donegan (DLS).
Old Xaverians won the B Section second semi
over Old Scotch 13.16 to 8.10. Scotch struggled up
forward generally and the Xavs held sway across
the centre to ensure their forwards received plenty
of opportunities. Best – Adgemis, Corcoran (3),
Sholly, Calleo, Pirrie, Burne (Xavs) and Alexander,
Anderson, Bubb (4), Morgan, Polkinghorne, Mason
(Scotch).
Old Brighton had a big win in the C Section prelim
final over Bulleen Templestowe 15.5 to 5.6. Best
– Brown, Gedye, Wilson (3), Mullett, Epstein, P
Sheppard (OB) and Sherison, Ling, D’Agostino,
Gilmore, Hooper, McCoy (BT).
State Bank wore down St Bedes Old collegians in the
D Section prelim final 20.10 to 7.15. Best – D Bennett
(5), Jenkins (7), Wynd, Rosewarne, A Brennan,
Murray (SB) and Pope, Roberts, King, Parks, Boyce,
Fogarty (St Bedes).
40 Years Ago – 1970
Coburg led all day in the A Section second semi
against Ormond and the final score of 18.16 to 13.11
was conclusive in the rivalry between the amateurs’
two strongest district clubs. Best – N Beattie (4), Seath
(4), King (4), Pearson, L Beattie, Scanlon (Coburg)
and Voight, Wood, Lavery, Bourne, Cameron, Dexter
(Ormond). Would they meet again in the grand final
and fly the flag for the districts clubs?
Old Scotch defeated Geelong Amateurs in the B
Section second semi 11.11 to 5.16. Geelong certainly
rued the missed chances in the second quarter (2.9)
but would have another chance to redeem themselves
the following week. Best – Marks, Stokes (3), Steele,
Walker, I Addison, Symington (Scotch) and Leake
(4), L Smith, R Foster, Robinson, Casboult, E Smith
(Geelong).
The talented Uni High School Old Boys bounced
back in the C Section prelim final and although
their kicking for goal was awful (9.23) they were far
too good for Old Haileyburians 4.9. Best – Bates,
Johnston, Taylor, Hume, Kinnear, Smith (UHSOB)
and Caddy, Langford-Jones, Mulvey, Pollock, Regan,
Trapp (OH).
50 Years Ago – 1960
University High School’s tight defence completely
nullified De La Salle’s forward structure in the B
Section second semi despite De La’s use of the wind.
In the second quarter, the brilliance of UHSOB’s line
up was obvious with 7 unanswered goals and with
Graeme Beissel and Daryl Foster leading the way. In
the third term, De La were again blanketed with the
wind and Uni High eventually won by a huge margin,
15.17 to 6.13 and appeared certainties for the flag.
Best – Morgan, McAuliffe, Shearn, O’Brien, Beissel
(4), Nettleton (UHSOB) and Compton, Heffernan,
Nesbitt, Firman, Kelly, Pilkington (DLS).
In the C Section prelim final shocking inaccuracy
in front of goal probably cost National Bank a place
in the grand final. In the first half they ran all over
the Parkside players but to Parkside’s credit, they
retrieved the situation with a hard slogging third
quarter and continued on in the final term to earn a
tilt at the title. Final winning score; 9.7 to 6.17. Best
– Holcombe, Petrucci, Milburn, O’Connell, Keane
(Parkside) and Strickland, Mueller, Corby, Neale,
Brewer, Henderson (National Bank).
FOR THE LOVE OF
Six VAFA players have been chosen to tour South
Africa later this month as part of the Australian
Amateur Football Council team. Jack Watts
(Uni Blues), Trent Zimbachs (Collegians) , Grant
Baldwin (Old Carey), Ryan Semmel (Hampton
Rovers), Paul Florance (Bulleen Templestowe)
and Jack Hellier (St Bede’s Mentone Tigers)
(pictured below) will take part on this trip which
will encompass football, coaching and community
work in the townships of Johannesburg. The team
will be coached by Mick Dwyer and includes
representatives from SA, WA and Tasmania.
Is this it? Old Paradians play in the Div 2
Preliminary Final today against Glen Eira. This
week, one of its greatest sons Peter Brabender has
announced that he will retire after the finals. For
his sake, let’s hope he squeezes in a game next
week to add to his 420 plus already on the board.
All of Peter’s games have been in the U19s or
seniors. He’s never played a Reserves game. His
career has unfortunately coincided with the slide
of Paradians from Premier down through the
grades. A Grand Final and a premiership would
be a dream exit for the great man. I’m sure even
Glen Eira would agree, but that won’t stop them
trying to fulfil their own ambitions.
The weather is playing havoc with the VAFA
finals schedule, with more games transferred this
week. VAFA GM of Football Operations Jeremy
Bourke has been working around the clock to find
grounds and it is taking its toll as these pictures
illustrate. First we see JB a month ago, happy
after his assistant coach role with the Vic U23s.
Then last week, when he trampled through the
mud at Central Reserve, then this week when the
rain kept on coming, causing more reshuffling.
Happy Fathers’ Day, Bourkey.
Banyule’s Alex Bottomley started at the club in 2004 with the under 19’s and was a
member of the 2005 Premiership team. Alex missed the entire 2009 season due to an
accident but has come back in 2010 better than ever. Alex started his career as a key
defender and has now turned into a key forward. Alex is known for his lightening quick
leads and massive “guns”.
Banyule’s would Cam McDonald began with the Under 19’s in 2008 and in 2009 was a
key member of the senior side. This year Cam has been an integral part of the Banyule
Premier B Thirds side.
UNDER 19
PREMIER: Then there were four. After 18 rounds of
football, De La Salle, Old Scotch, Beaumaris and Old
Xaverians will contest this year’s finals series. This series
was to have begun last week, but strange things happen.
Rain came, footy postponed. So here we go again,
Premier column retyped.
De La is truly the impressive story of 2010 after going
undefeated for the season and backing up last year’s
minor premiership. De La led by 28 points at half-time
against a spirited Old Melburnians line-up, but the class
of the boys from Dairy Bell shone through in the third
with an eight goal to one rampage. Jack O’Halloran was
impressive against OMs, now a key player in the side
after starting the season in the Magoos. Ed Espinosa
and Ben Nethersole have kicked at least three goals
seven times and five times respectively this season, and
Hugh Nicholson has kicked a goal in his past 16 games.
Headaches all round for the three opposing finalists. After
such an upbeat preseason, OMs will be disappointed with
its season, but it did suffer a fair share of injuries and
escaped relegation. Lachie Bennett has been a shining
light for 2010.
Uni Blues’ season ended by the slightest of margins,
sending the afternoon Old Xavs-Beaumaris match to a
dead rubber. The early fixture saw a spirited Uni Blues
throw everything at Old Scotch in the final quarter, but
it wasn’t enough to make the finals. Cardinals’ Lachlan
Cooper was terrific in only his fifth game for season, as
was Henry Dick. Charles Shaw was best afield for the
Students, coming off a great performance for the Premier
team the week prior. And congratulations to Max Allen
for taking out the Sherrin Sharpshooters.
Beaumaris and Old Xavs will do battle on neutral territory
this Saturday, just a week after the Sharks defeated the
Xavs by eight points. The return of Hicham Nidam after
his suspension was obvious on the field, while finals
specialist Sam Lees was red hot. Beauy’s spread of
goalkickers was impressive down at Banksia Reserve,
and whether or not either team played conservatively
before the finals will be answered soon enough.
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers finished its season off with an
impressive eight-goal victory over Marcellin. The Tigers
won three of their last five games for the season, and word
is the 18s coming up may take the Baysiders back into
finals contention in 2011. For Marcellin, it’s a wooden
spoon and relegation after a lacklustre year.
Uni Blacks is the other team to feel the relegation pinch,
but was also entertaining towards the pointy end of the
season by winning three of its final four games. The
Students won a cliffhanger over Old Camberwell, a team
that will have to regroup next year after a midseason hot
streak.
NORTH 1: A quirk of the draw saw a second-semi
dress-rehearsal in the final round. And, whilst they went
down to the Tigers by 28 points, Fitzroy showed enough
to prove they will be no push-overs in the big re-match.
Leading by two points at the half, the Roys believed that
the juggernaut might finally be stopped; but it was not
to be, as the Bees were stung into action and banged
on eight to decide the contest. Old Carey, with one eye
on the first semi, recorded a solid victory over Trinity.
Ben Fordham booted six. Carey will need to step up the
intensity a notch if they are to overcome St. Bernard’s,
whose 119-point mauling of neighbours Old Essendon
was a handy hit-out leading into the semis. Brad Cooper
was again amongst the best for the Dogs.
Preview: Although not totally convincing last week, it is
impossible to go past the all-conquering Tigers in their
second-semi appointment with the Roys. For me, it’s
Werribee by 35 points. After the Snow Dogs won big in
their first two meetings, Carey hit back in R13. It could go
either way, but St. Bernard’s should have the firepower to
get over the line by 10 points.
NORTH 2: In the local derby at Chelsworth, it was Old
Ivanhoe who prevailed over Ivanhoe and thus confirmed
for themselves a piece of the finals action. The Old Boys
always had the game under control, and luckily their
wayward kicking for goal did not prove costly. Therry-
Penola confirmed their flag favouritism with a thumping
defeat of the Bullants. The Lions had an impressive
twelve goal-kickers in their massive 30-goal victory,
spear-headed by William Dean with 13. Old Westbourne
did enough against Emmaus-St. Leo’s to hang on to a
place in the four. However, the Warriors were not overly
impressive in dispatching the cellar-dwelling Animals,
who only posted one victory for the year. Latrobe’s
96-point defeat of Fitzroy only served to remind them
of what might have been had a drastic mid-season slump
not ruined their season. And in the final match, Aquinas
powered away from local rivals Whitefriars in the second
half to post a 24-point win.
Preview: Although Aquinas knocked them over in their
previous encounter, Therry-Penola’s late-season form has
been excellent. They have the ability to score heavily,
and given the right conditions should do so again in the
second-semi. The Lions by 25 points. Old Westbourne’s
recent form has been inconsistent, and I am tipping Old
Ivanhoe to continue their late surge and win by 5 goals.
NORTH 1 REVIEW: At Amateur headquarters under
the Friday night lights, it was Old Carey who shone
brightest in the first semi-final. The match was tough
slog, particularly in the first half when only five goals
in total were scored. It was St. Bernard’s who went into
the main break with a slim two-point lead, although it
48 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010
was arguably Carey’s poor conversion (2.8) that saw
them trailing. Both teams managed three goals each in
the third quarter, with the Dogs maintaining their twopoint
buffer at the final break. The last term was a classic,
but it was to be the Panthers who emerged victorious by
a mere seven points. Simon Caven and Harry Overman
were best for St. Bernard’s, while Sam Fisher (in just his
second game for the season) and Nick Richardson were
best for Carey.
It was the upset of the season. Fitzroy’s four-goal secondsemi
win over the previously undefeated Werribee was
the triumph of a team with belief. The Tigers got away to
an early lead, but with a six-goal second-term the Roys
were seven points up at half-time. The third quarter saw
Fitzroy kick a wasteful 2.8 and there were fears that this
profligacy would cost them the game. However, they did
not despair and came home with force, finishing full of
running to boot 6.6 in the last to overpower Werribee.
Preview: Footy finals are littered with stories of
unbeatable teams who went out in straight sets. But I am
not expecting that fate to befall Werribee, and am tipping
that they will bounce back strongly to defeat Old Carey
by 35 points at Craigieburn.
NORTH 2 REVIEW: Therry-Penola carried their
good recent form into the second-semi and recorded a
comfortable 32-point win over Aquinas. Despite being
two points down at the half, the ladder-leaders kicked six
in the third quarter to put paid to thoughts of an upset.
Ibrahim Kana, with six goals, was the star for Therry.
In the first-semi at Waverley, Old Ivanhoe thumped Old
Westbourne by 113 points in a performance which will
have them believing they can knock over the Bloods
this week. The Warriors were extremely disappointing
and were outclassed all over the ground. Best for the
Hoers was James Moio who booted seven in a dominant
performance.
Preview: This prelim looms as a belter: I reckon that Old
Ivanhoe have hit their straps at the right time, and am
expecting them to triumph by 10 points over Aquinas.
SOUTH 1: With Tom Small out it was always going to
be a tough ask for the Fields, and after a goalless first
quarter supporters were wondering where the goals were
going to come from. Brighton on the other hand were up
and about and by half time could sniff a Grand Final birth.
Once again Sargent was brilliant in the middle, he won
the hard ball setting the standard and tone for his team
mates, Coroneos booted three as he and Newman were
crafty up forward. Schaffer was quiet whilst Scott Bilger
continues his great end to the season. Skevs and AJAX
had to wait until Sunday to contest their elimination final,
Immediately SKOBS were on the front foot with big man
Rowe proving difficult for the AJAX defence. Charlie
Ring was back doing what he does best and that’s being
a clearance and running machine, he along with Will
Russel were excellent all day. For Ajax once again a lack
of goal kickers and forward targets let them down, Lang,
Simon and Nissen were all very well held whilst Harel
and Selzer tried hard all day. For AJAX their season ends,
Skevs march on into the second week while the Fields
have the Second Chance. Waverly Park will host the do
or die battle, I’m tipping a kick will separate the teams all
day. Hopefully Tom Small will be right and if he is I’ll tip
Caulfield by five Points.
SOUTH 2:Oakleigh move into the Grand Final whilst
Old Xavs bow out! Oakleigh’s dreadful kicking in front of
goal kept the dons in the game at half time, and the trend
continued in the second half. Mazenod couldn’t capitalise
and in the end were convincingly beaten by 50-points.
Paul Tsoucalas led all comers with four majors whilst Tim
Scott showed why he has been selected in their senior
side all year with a dominating display. For Mazenod all
is not lost, their consistent season gives them the second
chance, however running into a rampaging Old Geelong
is not ideal. OG’s brilliant finals record continues as a
dazzling second half knocked out Xavier. Skelton proved
that he can perform in finals kicking five in a outstanding
performance, he along with inside nuggetty midfielder
Julian Foster were brilliant. Due to the premier finals
fixture being cancelled, Old Xavs dropped back some
super players including Sam Lees to keep their reserves
in the race. However a forgettable second half cost Xavier
any chance of progressing into the Preliminary final. Next
week’s game will be tight, Mazenod will go in favourites
but Old Geelong will fancy themselves and come into the
game with nothing to lose. My Tip Mazenod… JUST!
We had a fantastic guest speaker in Trisha Silvers
(Broadbridge) who had the room captivated
with the heart-wrenching video and story of the
tragic tsunami that claimed her husband Troy in
2004. This young lady’s courage and dedication
to the Reach Foundation and the re-building of
Phi Phi Island was an absolute inspiration.
Learn more about Reach at http://www.reach.
org.au/
Well done to MC Russell Davidson and
especially to Luke Holmes for a fantastic and
entertaining visual display on the big screens all
night. We look forward to this huge event every
year and it just keeps on getting better.
MILESTONE
Celebrated just recently was the 100 th VAFA
game for Cam Davidson, who being younger,
taller and much better looking (right Cam?)
over-shadows his older brother Russell. With his
relaxed style, Cam never takes life too seriously,
unless he’s head to head in poker. Well done on
your milestone (Cam, we kept it clean and nice
so as not to upset your mother!!!)
WHERE IS YOUR HEAD?
Brendan Hoornweg travelled a few kilometres
recently which we think might have been a
touch too much. Brendan, who lives in Box
Hill, travelled to Elsternwick to pick his partner
up (Evo) and then proceeded down Nepean
Highway in the direction of Mentone. Evo
questioned his direction skills and then told him
that we are umpiring at Bulleen-Templestowe
who are playing Old Mentonians. A quick round
trip finally got the boys to the right ground on
time, but in Brendan’s haste he forgot his shorts.
We must thank Bulleen-Temp who came to the
rescue with a pair of blue shorts. Two things you
need to do Brendan, always carry a spare pair
of shorts and of course read your appointment
thoroughly.
SPEAKING OF SHORTS
Our new gear sponsor in ORCA, have nice shorts
with only the one draw-back (for some) being
the location of the pocket. This location tends
to gather sweat and makes it difficult in keeping
your paper for reporting dry. Ryan Robertson
has come up with an innovative way of getting
around that, by not using paper, but by writing on
his thigh. Does he have to shave a special little
square into those very hairy legs every Saturday
morning? Let’s hope chaffing doesn’t rub off the
numbers Ryan.
SPONSOR
We umpires have another sponsor that has been
with us for well over ten years and we all give him
a bit of stick at times. Anthony Damen works
in the home loan business and likes the word of
mouth approach through the umpires and friends.
We’d like to publicly thank AD for his continued
support of the VAFAUA and its members. So
if anyone is looking for a new home loan then
contact AD, and here’s a quiet little plug:
UNDER 18
NORTHERN SIDES TRIUMPH
Nick Wald
Not unlike Round 16, the first week of finals in the
Under 18s was dominated by sides that originated in
the Northern division. Whatever is in the water up there
is working wonders for these sides as Rupertswood,
Werribee, UHS-VU/Flemington and St Bernards all
recorded impressive victories.
Harry Trott Oval was the setting for both of the Division
1 finals and it was Werribee v Old Camberwell opening
proceedings. This was never going to be an easy result
to predict, as both sides finished the season locked on 44
points. The only reason Werribee got to don their home
shorts was that they had a far superior percentage.
The Bees got off to a great start and went into quarter time
with a three goal advantage and when this margin was
extended to 31 points at the main break, it appeared that
they were on their way to a resounding victory. However,
Camberwell was not about to waste a season of hard work
and bomb out of the premiership race without a fight.
Coach Howard Mitchell delivered some inspiring words
in the rooms at half time and the Wellers rallied, booting
four goals to the Bees’ one in the third term. The margin
was a slender two goals in Werribee’s favour when the
final quarter started and OC was charging. To Werribee’s
credit they staved off the fast finishing Wellers and were
able to steady the ship with five final quarter goals. The
final margin was a seemingly comfortable 33 points, but
there were definitely a few nervous moments for the
eventual victors, especially in the third quarter. If one
had said that Camberwell would restrict Dillon Taylor
to just three goals for the game, I would have had my
money on an OC victory. To Werribee’s credit they found
ten different avenues to goal, with Taylor and the el
capitano Matt Turner the most prolific with three apiece.
Jarryd de Rose played a terrific game for the Bees while
Mark Brazzale and, as per usual, Harrison Levvey were
best for Camberwell. Unfortunately we say goodbye to
Camberwell for 2010 but they will undoubtedly return
next year hell bent on claiming the flag.
Werribee face a fired up Oakleigh outfit today after the
Krushers went down by 27 points to the flag favourites
Rupertswood. While semi finals generate copious
amounts of interest anyway, this match was particularly
intriguing given the nature of the only other clash
between the two dominant sides in 2010. The last time
they met, Oakleigh destroyed Rupertswood by 90 points
in what was the latter’s only defeat of 2010. This proved
to be no indication of what would unfold in this game
however, as Rupertswood recovered from a sluggish
opening half to post a solid victory and book a place in
the decider. Matthew Twentyman kicked four goals in
a dominant performance while Oakleigh’s Rodney Jetta
was outstanding with five. Rupertswood now have the
week off to freshen up for the big one while Oakleigh
will not be holding back in their cut throat clash with
Werribee today.
In Div 2, out at Dairy Bell, the Snow Dogs beat St Mary’s
Salesian with some comfort, while UHS-VU/Flemington
edged St John’s.
Bernies and the Saints were at it all afternoon in a low
scoring affair, until the last when the Snow Dogs put up a
brick wall and tore away themselves, adding five majors.
For the northern invaders, Andrew Graham slotted three
for the afternoon and James Weir kicked four in a best
on ground effort.
In the second-semi, St John’s was goalless in the first
and dobbed only one in the second term against the
UHSVUF. This slow start cost them the game, as the
nineteen point lead was insurmountable. After the long
break, the teams traded majors. William “Will” Williams
kicked three to put the Acronyms into the Granny.
WINNING EDGE
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
The Winning Edge Club Championship has been
won by De La Salle, who by any measure turned
in a sensational season all round. Four of its six
teams made the finals, and for the purpose of the
club championship, they were the right ones. Their
1s finished 3 rd , their Reserves 1 st , their U19s 1 st
(and unbeaten) and their Thirds in 2 nd place. Tally:
159 points.
Finishing second was Caulfield Grammarians
on 143. The Fields might have been closer but
for a couple of late season losses, but their
consolation prize is their promotion to Premier B.
Tally: 143 points.
Werribee finished third, just another point back.
They will also be promoted, jumping to Premier C
for the first time. Tally: 142.
Positions four through six are filled by Old
Xaverians (136.5), Collegians (124) and
University Blues (121), all of whom made the
finals in Premier football, along with De La Salle.
The strength of these Premier clubs comes from
quantity as well as quality and a Thirds team would
seem to be a pre-requisite.
Banyule, dominant and promoted after a great year in
Division 2, also had their Thirds, playing in Premier
B, finish on top. Their fifteenth place finish (109)
would have been higher but for the lack of a junior
team (and a missed opportunity at 54 points).
