Scout Executive’s Corner<br />

Scouting… Time Well Spent<br />

I often spend time reflecting on my years as a Scout. I think about the memories I have of summer camp and<br />

the hikes my Troop took in the Adirondack Mountains. They were the adventures all kids dream of, and now as an<br />

adult there is nothing that brings a smile to my face more than seeing a Scout experience the joys of Scouting as I did.<br />

I think part of that has to do with being a parent, and wanting my children to have what I had, and more. Well, my<br />

children are grown now… They’re off to college… And they’re making memories of their own.<br />

If I had one message to share with you, from one parent to another, enjoy the time you have with your child… And<br />

enjoy it in Scouting. Whether it’s his first Pinewood Derby race, his crossover from Webelos to Boy Scouts or packing<br />

for his first summer camp experience, enjoy it together, and cherish it. Scouting is an activity that brings families<br />

together, and prepares your child to succeed in life.<br />

Scouting is also an activity unlike others because you are not asked or required to pay the full cost to join. Your local pack or troop<br />

charges for their local expenses and a small fee that goes to our national office for registration, record keeping and program development.<br />

The Simon Kenton Council provides training and support for your leaders, camp facilities, activities, insurance and oversight of health and<br />

safety policies and practices. In the next few months you will be asked to support Scouting’s annual giving campaign, Friends of Scouting.<br />

This year, Scouting has “gotten with the times” and we have focused our Friends of Scouting campaign theme around “Accepting the<br />

Friend Request” with our Friends being the 27,000 youth we support in the Scouting program here in the Simon Kenton Council. By<br />

accepting this request, you are ultimately allowing your child and so many others the chance to continue to make memories in Scouting –<br />

the memories you will make as a family!<br />

So as we begin to launch the next century of Scouting, I hope you will join me, and thousands of other families, by accepting MY<br />

Friend request. I hope before the end of <strong>2011</strong>, your Scout can say he has 27,000 Friends who supported him and the memories he will<br />

continue to make with you, his family. Cherish the precious time you have together and I hope you will value what Scouting does for your<br />

child and family.<br />

Council Annual Business Meeting & Elections<br />

In accordance with the Simon Kenton Council, Boy Scouts of<br />

America, bylaws this is official notice of the Council Annual Business<br />

Meeting and Elections. Thomas C. Pelto, President of the Simon<br />

Kenton Council, Boy Scouts of America, proudly announces that the<br />

following Board Members will serve on the <strong>2011</strong> Council Nominating<br />

Committee, William C. Andrews, Chairman; Kevin J. Lee; and<br />

the Honorable Guy L. Reece II for the election of Officers, Board<br />

Members, Local Council Representatives to the National Council,<br />

Life Board Members, Honorary Board Members, Advisory Board<br />

Members and Council Members at Large. Also on the Committee are<br />

Kurtis Tunnell, Esq. and Ty D. Marsh.<br />

The annual meeting and elections will be held on Thursday, <strong>February</strong><br />

24, <strong>2011</strong>. Chartered Organization Representatives and Members at<br />

Large of the Simon Kenton Council are invited to attend and may make<br />

recommendations of possible nominees to the Council Nominating<br />

Committee for consideration and are eligible to vote at the Annual<br />

Business Meeting.<br />

Nominations must be submitted in writing no later than Tuesday,<br />

<strong>January</strong> 25, <strong>2011</strong>. Active members should send their recommendations<br />

Resolutions Committee Notice<br />

of Simon Kenton Council G. Ross Bridgman has been appointed<br />

Chairman of the Council Resolutions Committee. He is joined on the<br />

Committee by Walter Guenther and William J. Wahoff.<br />

The following is the procedure for submitting resolutions for<br />

consideration at the <strong>February</strong> 24, <strong>2011</strong>, Annual Business Meeting<br />

of the Simon Kenton Council. The Resolutions Committee will<br />

review all proposed resolutions and determine if they are appropriate<br />

for consideration at the meeting or if they should be referred to a<br />

committee for further action.<br />

Any member (Chartered Organization Representative or Member at<br />

Large) of the Simon Kenton Council wishing to submit a proposed<br />

resolution must deliver a copy of the proposed resolution, together<br />

with a brief description of its purpose, to:<br />

<strong>2011</strong> University of Scouting New Location<br />

University of Scouting will have an all new location. On <strong>January</strong> 22, <strong>2011</strong><br />

the University of Scouting will be hosted by Pickerington North High<br />

School. This year’s University of Scouting will provide many training<br />

and programming opportunities and will also offer a high energy opening<br />

Kroger Community Rewards Program<br />

The Simon Kenton Council needs your help as we continue to make a<br />

difference in the lives of Scouting families! Kroger generously gives<br />

up to $5,000,000 to non-profit organizations each year as part of its<br />

Community Rewards Program. Simon Kenton Council is one of the<br />

registered organizations that has an opportunity<br />

to receive some of these designated funds. The<br />

simple steps to enroll your Kroger Plus Card<br />

with the Community Rewards program are<br />

shown below.<br />

If you already donate your Kroger Reward points to help the Simon<br />

Kenton Council, please re-enroll to continue to support us.<br />

If you are not currently donating your Kroger Reward points, please<br />

consider enrolling to join this effort.<br />

Here are the two easy steps to get started:<br />

Simon Kenton Council’s New Award<br />

The Beacon Award will go to Units that are out<br />

in the public and visible to our communities. The<br />

award will be for Units that publicize community<br />

service efforts or events and get their stories told<br />

in local media. This awareness of Scouting will<br />

help promote Scouting’s values and relevance in<br />

local communities. The Beacon Award will be a honor that Scouts can<br />

wear on their uniforms in a commemorative patch as well as one that<br />

can be awarded to Units as a plaque. The submission process and award<br />

Office Volunteer Team Recognized at Luncheon<br />

Simon Kenton Council is grateful<br />

to have dedicated office volunteers<br />

that help us with data entry,<br />

mailings and other daily tasks that<br />

are important to the success of the<br />

Scouting program. It is because<br />

of these volunteers dedication<br />

to Scouting that we are able to<br />

continue to grow and expand the<br />

Scouting program. The volunteer<br />

luncheon honored many of our<br />

office volunteers for outstanding<br />

contributions to Scouting during<br />

the year of 2010. If you are<br />

5,000 New Scouts Recruited This Fall<br />

As of December 1st, 2010 Fall Recruitment Goals have been met! Let’s<br />

use this momentum to launch an effective spring recruitment. Remember<br />

that every youth we impact greatly increases that youth’s chances of<br />

having a successful future. Host a recruiting event this spring and share<br />

it with the whole council on Facebook. Recruiting events could be great<br />

Beacon Award opportunities! Learn more about spring recruitment on<br />

Many Cub Scouts and their families came together for weekend holiday fun! Holiday at the Rock<br />

and Winter Wonderland were big hits with the kids as they got to visit with Santa, decorate Christmas<br />

cookies, create Christmas Tree Ornaments, learn about hibernation on a winter nature hike and many<br />

other great activities. Don’t miss the exciting events that will be coming to our Council camps this<br />

Scouting for Food A Huge Success<br />

Thank you to all the Units that worked so hard to make a huge difference in<br />

our communities this fall by participating in our Council-wide Scouting for<br />

Food effort.<br />

The initiative kicked-off on October 29th with an all day food drive at ABC<br />

6/Fox 28 studios where Scouts collected more than 10,000lbs of food for the<br />

Mid-Ohio Foodbank. From there, Scout units participated in the month-long<br />

effort by distributing Scouting for Food collection bags (donated by Giant<br />

Eagle) in their neighborhoods and placing Scouting for Food collection boxes<br />

in their schools and churches. The countdown has begun for Scouting for<br />

Food <strong>2011</strong> so check out Scouting for Food details and the list of participating<br />

units at www.skcbsa.org/ScoutingforFood.<br />

<strong>2011</strong> “Fit For Scouting” Be a Part of the Fun<br />

Throughout <strong>2011</strong>, Simon Kenton Council<br />

is committing to expanding health & fitness<br />

opportunities to our Scouting families. Be a<br />

part of the fun this year by participating in our<br />

“Fit for Scouting” challenge! .<br />

By completing the initiative during <strong>2011</strong> you<br />

will receive a special “Fit for Scouting” patch.<br />

The requirements differ slightly for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and<br />

Venturers, but all work to help Scouts advance and live a healthier<br />

lifestyle. For Scouts to earn the “Fit for Scouting” patch they must:<br />

Attend one Scout Night (list online), attend the Health & Fitness<br />

Expo and participate in one Chiller Skate Night. Cub Scouts must<br />

also complete 4/6 specific belt loops offered through these programs,<br />

while Boy Scouts must earn 2/3 specific merit badges offered and<br />

venturers must earn the Sports Bronze Award.<br />

Simon Kenton Council is forming a volunteer team to help us make<br />

our inaugural Health & Fitness Expo a success. There are many<br />

ways that you can get involved including running an activity like<br />

orienteering or an aerobics class, helping mark the 5K trail run,<br />

joining the promotions team or just helping out where needed. To<br />

sign up to be a part of the “Fit for Scouting” Volunteer Team, log<br />

What’s The Buzz? Social Media & Scouting<br />

With the increased use of social media we are able to more quickly get<br />

information out regarding upcoming events, trainings, camping updates<br />

and other Scouting news. Are you taking advantage of all of Simon Kenton<br />

Council’s social media tools? Trust us, you’ve got nothing to lose and now<br />

more to gain!<br />

Well, Throughout <strong>2011</strong> we will be hosting competitions and drawings on<br />

Facebook! Prizes will vary from Scout shop gift cards to donated items<br />

from local businesses. What do you need to do? Just sign up to be a member<br />

of our Facebook Page.<br />

Our first few competitions will be: What does being fit mean to<br />

you? Enter the “Fit for Scouting <strong>2011</strong>” competition. It is a photo<br />

contest that tracks your fitness activities. Enter your submissions<br />

on the Simon Kenton Council Facebook page starting in <strong>February</strong><br />

<strong>2011</strong>!

Popcorn Kernels<br />

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of thousands of Scouts<br />

and Leaders, the 2010 popcorn sale came to a successful close last<br />

month, resulting in over 1.95 million dollars in sales to support<br />

local Scouting programs. This campaign’s success depends on so<br />

many members of the Scouting community, it would be impossible<br />

to list them all. However, a select group of Popcorn Kernels have<br />

gone above and beyond in their roles as District Kernel and we<br />

would like to thank them for their efforts.<br />

warehouse, making a special trip to deliver a late order of popcorn,<br />

answering popcorn emails late into the night or working with a<br />

for all the time you spent to help the young people of the Scouting<br />

program.<br />

United Way Donor Designations & The BSA<br />

Receiving “Donor Designated” gifts from United Way contributors<br />

is greatly appreciated by the Simon Kenton Council. If you<br />

participate in a United Way Workplace Campaign through one of<br />

the 14 United Way’s supporting our organization, please consider<br />

directing your gift to Scouting. If you are contributing to the<br />

United Way of Central Ohio, please indicate Donor Designation<br />

Code (16) to direct your support to Simon Kenton Council. For more<br />

Community honorees generated more than $180,000 toward SKC Scouting<br />

programs. The 27,000 Scouts of Simon Kenton Council would like to extend<br />

Reception is a chance to recognize a local<br />

community member for living their life as a<br />

“Good Scout” and at the same time increase<br />

Successful Friends of Scouting Campaign Leads to<br />

Camp Improvements<br />

If you have visited any council camps recently, you may have seen a few improvements<br />

that have recently been made thanks to the success of the 2010 Friends of Scouting<br />

campaign. For the first time in years, Simon Kenton Council achieved the FOS goal<br />

and that allowed for a significant reinvestment into council camps.<br />

FOS Dollars helped fund many camp projects including:<br />

The Iceberg at Chief Logan Reservation • Dining Hall Improvements at<br />

Camp Lazarus • New Equipment Carts at Camp Falling Rock<br />

All of these improvements were able to be made thanks to the contributions gained<br />

through the 2010 Friends of Scouting campaign. When a Friends of Scouting<br />

representative asks you for support this year, please contribute knowing that you are<br />

not only helping your Scout’s program, but the program of 27,000 Scouts across Simon<br />

Kenton Council.<br />

Thank You Reinberger Foundation For Needed<br />

Camp Lazarus Updates<br />

Thanks to a generous grant of $5,000 from the Reinberger Foundation the Simon<br />

Kenton Council was able to fully renovate the Huntington Cabin at Camp Lazarus.<br />

Some of the improvements included in the upgraded cabin include new appliances,<br />

new flooring, new drywall, and new plumbing. Three other cabins are in the process of<br />

being renovated thanks to the Reinberger Foundation.<br />

to be. We offer weekend backpacking and canoeing<br />

treks including an overnight canoe trip down the<br />

Scioto River, with a guide, equipment, lodging and all food provided for $65 per person.<br />

If interested in backpacking you can hike the Shawnee Backpack trail, and be outfitted<br />

Simon Kenton Council is looking for energetic,<br />

responsible individuals interested in spending a summer<br />

at a Council Camp! The success of a Troop’s week<br />

at summer camp is often determined by the quality of<br />

the staff, and Simon Kenton Council prides itself on<br />

having a top notch staff every summer.<br />

If you know a Scout, Venturer or Explorer who will be<br />

15 years old by June 1, <strong>2011</strong> and whom you believe<br />

would make a good staff member, encourage him to<br />

apply for staff.<br />

NYLT is a great opportunity for older Scouts (1st Class/13 years of<br />

age and up) to go through an intensive leadership training course. The<br />

course will develop patrol method leadership skills, public speaking<br />

skills, and Scout craft instruction skills.<br />
