Scout Executive’s Corner
Scouting… Time Well Spent
I often spend time reflecting on my years as a Scout. I think about the memories I have of summer camp and
the hikes my Troop took in the Adirondack Mountains. They were the adventures all kids dream of, and now as an
adult there is nothing that brings a smile to my face more than seeing a Scout experience the joys of Scouting as I did.
I think part of that has to do with being a parent, and wanting my children to have what I had, and more. Well, my
children are grown now… They’re off to college… And they’re making memories of their own.
If I had one message to share with you, from one parent to another, enjoy the time you have with your child… And
enjoy it in Scouting. Whether it’s his first Pinewood Derby race, his crossover from Webelos to Boy Scouts or packing
for his first summer camp experience, enjoy it together, and cherish it. Scouting is an activity that brings families
together, and prepares your child to succeed in life.
Scouting is also an activity unlike others because you are not asked or required to pay the full cost to join. Your local pack or troop
charges for their local expenses and a small fee that goes to our national office for registration, record keeping and program development.
The Simon Kenton Council provides training and support for your leaders, camp facilities, activities, insurance and oversight of health and
safety policies and practices. In the next few months you will be asked to support Scouting’s annual giving campaign, Friends of Scouting.
This year, Scouting has “gotten with the times” and we have focused our Friends of Scouting campaign theme around “Accepting the
Friend Request” with our Friends being the 27,000 youth we support in the Scouting program here in the Simon Kenton Council. By
accepting this request, you are ultimately allowing your child and so many others the chance to continue to make memories in Scouting –
the memories you will make as a family!
So as we begin to launch the next century of Scouting, I hope you will join me, and thousands of other families, by accepting MY
Friend request. I hope before the end of 2011, your Scout can say he has 27,000 Friends who supported him and the memories he will
continue to make with you, his family. Cherish the precious time you have together and I hope you will value what Scouting does for your
child and family.
Warmest wishes for a safe, happy, healthy and rewarding year in 2011.
Successful Friends of Scouting Campaign Leads to
Camp Improvements
If you have visited any council camps recently, you may have seen a few improvements
that have recently been made thanks to the success of the 2010 Friends of Scouting
campaign. For the first time in years, Simon Kenton Council achieved the FOS goal
and that allowed for a significant reinvestment into council camps.
FOS Dollars helped fund many camp projects including:
The Iceberg at Chief Logan Reservation • Dining Hall Improvements at
Camp Lazarus • New Equipment Carts at Camp Falling Rock
All of these improvements were able to be made thanks to the contributions gained
through the 2010 Friends of Scouting campaign. When a Friends of Scouting
representative asks you for support this year, please contribute knowing that you are
not only helping your Scout’s program, but the program of 27,000 Scouts across Simon
Kenton Council.
Thank You Reinberger Foundation For Needed
Camp Lazarus Updates
Thanks to a generous grant of $5,000 from the Reinberger Foundation the Simon
Kenton Council was able to fully renovate the Huntington Cabin at Camp Lazarus.
Some of the improvements included in the upgraded cabin include new appliances,
new flooring, new drywall, and new plumbing. Three other cabins are in the process of
being renovated thanks to the Reinberger Foundation.
