Art and Design Teacher Survey #2
In March 2011, NSEAD conducted an indicative survey of 100 art and design teachers to measure the
impact of the E-Bac on art and design in English schools. The aim of this identical, second follow-up survey
was to update the information and to identify in real-terms what impact the E-Bac has had on art and
design as an option at KS4, vocational learning and art and design teacher numbers in English schools.
1.
Art and design does not currently form part of the new English
Baccalaureate for students at KS4. In your school/college have the
numbers of students who opted to study art and design at KS4...
Stayed the same
32%
Reduced 50%
Increased 18%
Selection of teachers’ written responses:
• From 130 pupils dropped to 52 pupils
• 90 down to 30
• 110 less students
• GCSE numbers are down by 50 per cent on last year and we have lost out on the more able children
• There is a reduction in number of G&T and more able students
2.
Has there been a reduction in any vocational courses offered next
year e.g. Applied GCSE, Creative and Media Diploma and BTEC Art
and Design?
Yes 39.2%
No 60.8%
Selection of teachers’ written responses:
• Edexcel Creative and Media Diploma
• BTEC First Diploma Art & Design but DT graphics and textiles not running
• BTEC art has very low numbers - only 8 students
• The Diploma had only 5 sign up so will not run
3.
Are there any plans to reduce the numbers of teachers and
technicians in your department in 2011-12?
Yes 38.4%
No 61.6%
Responses:
• 5 down to 4, one FT made redundant
• Currently 5 plus a technician, lost 1 member of staff last year - not replaced them, losing one post this year
and a further post next year will be down to 3 teachers one technician (halved in two years
• 2 less for next year
• We have lost 20% technician hours and have to train a D&T teacher to teach art
• The dept will be over staffed but staff will be deployed elsewhere (possibly to teach a second subject) to
avoid redundancies
4.
Has there been any reduction in capitation planned for your
department?
Yes 57%
No 41%
Not yet known 2%
Responses:
• Almost halved the budget from last year
• £2000 this year - was £5500 3 years ago.
• Funding is done per child so will decrease due to decreased number at GCSE
• Our formula is based on numbers and they are considerably down
