<strong>Whe<strong>the</strong>r</strong> <strong>we</strong> <strong>realize</strong> <strong>it</strong> <strong>or</strong> <strong>not</strong>,<br />

<strong>prayer</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>encounter</strong> <strong>of</strong> God’s <strong>thirst</strong> w<strong>it</strong>h ours.<br />

God <strong>thirst</strong>s that <strong>we</strong> may <strong>thirst</strong> f<strong>or</strong> God.<br />

Catech<strong>is</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Catholic Church, § 2560<br />

People ask me how to pray better,<br />

what can help <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>prayer</strong> life<br />

- and <strong>the</strong> ans<strong>we</strong>r <strong>is</strong> “Pray.”<br />

Thomas Merton<br />

Principles <strong>of</strong> <strong>prayer</strong><br />

• Prayer <strong>is</strong> a gift from God. We pray because God calls to us.<br />

• Prayer <strong>is</strong> <strong>not</strong> an obligation as much as an opp<strong>or</strong>tun<strong>it</strong>y.<br />

• There <strong>is</strong> no ‘wrong way’ to pray.<br />

Why pray?<br />

• As St. Augustine said, You made us f<strong>or</strong> yourself and our hearts are restless until <strong>the</strong>y rest in you. We<br />

can search <strong>the</strong> entire w<strong>or</strong>ld and never be as ‘at home’ as <strong>we</strong> will be in communion w<strong>it</strong>h God.<br />

• Prayer helps us to become holy. The closer <strong>we</strong> draw to God, <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>we</strong> get from what drags us<br />

into sin and trouble.<br />

• We begin to see <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld as God sees <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld - <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> each person, <strong>the</strong> true w<strong>or</strong>th <strong>of</strong> our<br />

w<strong>or</strong>k and relationships, <strong>the</strong> compassion that each person needs.<br />

What ‘problems’ can ar<strong>is</strong>e in <strong>prayer</strong>, and what can I do about <strong>the</strong>m?<br />

• Not finding <strong>the</strong> time. The truth <strong>is</strong> that <strong>we</strong> make time f<strong>or</strong> what <strong>is</strong> imp<strong>or</strong>tant to us - exerc<strong>is</strong>e, a<br />

fav<strong>or</strong><strong>it</strong>e TV show, spending time talking w<strong>it</strong>h friends, a hobby. You might need to be creative about<br />

finding <strong>the</strong> best time f<strong>or</strong> yourself, but <strong>it</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong>re in <strong>the</strong> day.<br />

• Not knowing how to begin. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best reasons to be part <strong>of</strong> a four thousand year old<br />

trad<strong>it</strong>ion <strong>is</strong> that <strong>the</strong>re are hundreds, perhaps thousands, <strong>of</strong> ways to begin. Do some investigating<br />

and experimenting to find <strong>the</strong> <strong>prayer</strong> style that f<strong>it</strong>s you at th<strong>is</strong> time in your life.<br />

• Getting d<strong>is</strong>tracted. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> part <strong>of</strong> being human. Don’t panic. Just return to <strong>the</strong> spir<strong>it</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>prayer</strong>. All<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great saints complained about th<strong>is</strong>. What made <strong>the</strong>m great saints <strong>is</strong> probably that <strong>the</strong>y didn’t<br />

get hung up on th<strong>is</strong>, but kept on.<br />

• Dryness, <strong>not</strong> feeling that anything <strong>or</strong> anybody <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong>re. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> a<strong>not</strong>her common experience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

great saints - St. John <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cross wrote movingly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Long Dark Night <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soul. Mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Teresa had a life changing experience <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>not</strong>hing f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> next 60 years <strong>of</strong> her life.<br />

These are <strong>the</strong> extremes, but <strong>the</strong>y tell us that th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong>n’t uncommon. Again, <strong>the</strong> way to deal w<strong>it</strong>h th<strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>is</strong> to keep on going. A regular time f<strong>or</strong> <strong>prayer</strong> in one’s life keeps one on track, and eventually <strong>the</strong><br />

dryness lifts. The o<strong>the</strong>r thing to remember <strong>is</strong> that yearning f<strong>or</strong> God in <strong>the</strong> dark <strong>is</strong> as much a <strong>prayer</strong><br />

as any kind <strong>of</strong> transcendent communion.<br />

Finding what w<strong>or</strong>ks f<strong>or</strong> you<br />

• Routines and reminders. Build <strong>it</strong> into your day, make an appointment w<strong>it</strong>h yourself. Use your<br />

phone to help you! Set an alarm. Use <strong>the</strong> timer. Pay attention to your ‘best time’, when you are<br />

alert and relaxed.<br />

• Experiment w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> best place and posture. Some people like to slip into a church. O<strong>the</strong>rs pray<br />

best in <strong>the</strong>ir living room. Some pray <strong>we</strong>ll on <strong>the</strong> bus <strong>or</strong> train <strong>or</strong> car. O<strong>the</strong>rs need to take a walk.<br />

Find out what su<strong>it</strong>s you <strong>the</strong> best.<br />

• D<strong>is</strong>cover if you need quiet <strong>or</strong> music, something to read, something to focus on, something to<br />

hold. We all have different ways <strong>we</strong> process real<strong>it</strong>y best. Some can l<strong>is</strong>ten to a podcast and get lost<br />

in <strong>it</strong>; o<strong>the</strong>rs find that <strong>the</strong> player <strong>is</strong> doing <strong>the</strong> <strong>prayer</strong>, while <strong>the</strong>y are thinking <strong>of</strong> something else.<br />

Some need to close <strong>the</strong>ir eyes. O<strong>the</strong>rs need to focus on a cross <strong>or</strong> candle. Find what w<strong>or</strong>ks best f<strong>or</strong><br />

you.<br />

Building a daily pattern <strong>of</strong> <strong>prayer</strong><br />

• Commend <strong>the</strong> day to God. Take some time at <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> your day to put <strong>the</strong> day into God’s<br />

hands. Why? In our bapt<strong>is</strong>m and confirmation <strong>we</strong> are consecrated to God. Th<strong>is</strong> f<strong>or</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>prayer</strong><br />

helps to remind us that <strong>we</strong> and everything that <strong>we</strong> do during <strong>the</strong> day <strong>is</strong> imp<strong>or</strong>tant to and in <strong>the</strong> sight<br />

<strong>of</strong> God. How? A trad<strong>it</strong>ional way <strong>is</strong> to make a ‘daily <strong>of</strong>fering.’ Here <strong>is</strong> an example: God, our<br />

Fa<strong>the</strong>r, I <strong>of</strong>fer You my day. I <strong>of</strong>fer You my <strong>prayer</strong>s, thoughts, w<strong>or</strong>ds, actions, joys, and sufferings in<br />

union w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> Heart <strong>of</strong> Jesus, who continues to <strong>of</strong>fer Himself in <strong>the</strong> Euchar<strong>is</strong>t f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> salvation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>or</strong>ld. May <strong>the</strong> Holy Spir<strong>it</strong>, Who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may<br />

w<strong>it</strong>ness to your love. W<strong>it</strong>h Mary, <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> our L<strong>or</strong>d and <strong>the</strong> Church, I pray f<strong>or</strong> all Apostles <strong>of</strong><br />

Prayer and f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>prayer</strong> intentions proposed by <strong>the</strong> Holy Fa<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>is</strong> month. Amen.<br />

(Find out m<strong>or</strong>e at www.apostleship<strong>of</strong><strong>prayer</strong>.<strong>or</strong>g)<br />

• Pra<strong>is</strong>e and thanksgiving. Why? Th<strong>is</strong> s<strong>or</strong>t <strong>of</strong> goes w<strong>it</strong>hout saying. How? Any <strong>prayer</strong> <strong>of</strong> wonder<br />

and pra<strong>is</strong>e will do. Three trad<strong>it</strong>ional <strong>prayer</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church may help you. The first <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> doxology,<br />

an all purpose <strong>prayer</strong> <strong>of</strong> pra<strong>is</strong>e: Gl<strong>or</strong>y be to <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r and to <strong>the</strong> Son and to <strong>the</strong> Holy Spir<strong>it</strong>. As <strong>it</strong><br />

was in <strong>the</strong> beginning, <strong>is</strong> now and ever shall be. The o<strong>the</strong>r two are found in chapter 1 <strong>of</strong> Luke’s<br />

Gospel. Zechariah’s <strong>prayer</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Benedictus, <strong>is</strong> prayed in <strong>the</strong> m<strong>or</strong>ning and Mary’s <strong>prayer</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />

Magnificat, <strong>is</strong> prayed in <strong>the</strong> evening.<br />

The Benedictus<br />

Blessed be <strong>the</strong> L<strong>or</strong>d, <strong>the</strong> God <strong>of</strong> Israel;<br />

he has come to h<strong>is</strong> people and set <strong>the</strong>m free.<br />

He has ra<strong>is</strong>ed up f<strong>or</strong> us a mighty savi<strong>or</strong>, b<strong>or</strong>n <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> servant David.<br />

Through h<strong>is</strong> holy prophets he prom<strong>is</strong>ed <strong>of</strong> old<br />

that he would save us from our enemies, from<br />

<strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> all who hate us.<br />

He prom<strong>is</strong>ed to show mercy to our fa<strong>the</strong>rs and<br />

to remember h<strong>is</strong> holy covenant.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> was <strong>the</strong> oath he sw<strong>or</strong>e to our fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Abraham: to set us free from <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> our<br />

enemies, free to w<strong>or</strong>ship him w<strong>it</strong>hout fear,<br />

holy and righteous in h<strong>is</strong> sight all <strong>the</strong> days <strong>of</strong><br />

our life.<br />

You, my child, shall be called <strong>the</strong> prophet <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Most High; f<strong>or</strong> you will go bef<strong>or</strong>e <strong>the</strong> L<strong>or</strong>d<br />

to prepare h<strong>is</strong> way, to give h<strong>is</strong> people<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> salvation by <strong>the</strong> f<strong>or</strong>giveness <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir sins.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> tender compassion <strong>of</strong> our God <strong>the</strong><br />

dawn from on high shall break upon us, to<br />

shine on those who d<strong>we</strong>ll in darkness and <strong>the</strong><br />

shadow <strong>of</strong> death, and to guide our feet into<br />

<strong>the</strong> way <strong>of</strong> peace.<br />

Page 2 <strong>of</strong> 4

The Magnificat<br />

My soul proclaims <strong>the</strong> greatness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> L<strong>or</strong>d, my<br />

spir<strong>it</strong> rejoices in God my Savi<strong>or</strong> f<strong>or</strong> he has<br />

looked w<strong>it</strong>h fav<strong>or</strong> on h<strong>is</strong> lowly servant. From<br />

th<strong>is</strong> day all generations will call me blessed: <strong>the</strong><br />

Almighty has done great things f<strong>or</strong> me, and holy<br />

<strong>is</strong> h<strong>is</strong> Name.<br />

He has mercy on those who fear him in every<br />

generation. He has shown <strong>the</strong> strength <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong><br />

arm, he has scattered <strong>the</strong> proud in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

conce<strong>it</strong>.<br />

He has cast down <strong>the</strong> mighty from <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

thrones, and has lifted up <strong>the</strong> lowly. He has.<br />

filled <strong>the</strong> hungry w<strong>it</strong>h good things, and <strong>the</strong><br />

rich he has sent away empty.<br />

He has come to <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> servant Israel<br />

f<strong>or</strong> he has remembered h<strong>is</strong> prom<strong>is</strong>e <strong>of</strong> mercy,<br />

<strong>the</strong> prom<strong>is</strong>e he made to our fa<strong>the</strong>rs, to<br />

Abraham and h<strong>is</strong> children f<strong>or</strong> ever.<br />

• Intercess<strong>or</strong>y <strong>prayer</strong>. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> just praying f<strong>or</strong> your own needs, <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs you know and f<strong>or</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> wider w<strong>or</strong>ld. Why? We are baptized into <strong>the</strong> priesthood <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t. What that means <strong>is</strong> that <strong>we</strong><br />

are called to pray f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld, bringing <strong>it</strong>s cares, concerns and troubles to <strong>the</strong> throne <strong>of</strong> God.<br />

How? There are set f<strong>or</strong>ms, like <strong>the</strong> General Intercessions at mass, but <strong>the</strong> f<strong>or</strong>m can take any that<br />

you prefer.<br />

• ‘Mantra’ <strong>prayer</strong> <strong>or</strong> practicing <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> God. These are sh<strong>or</strong>t, repeated <strong>prayer</strong>s which help<br />

to focus <strong>the</strong> mind and spir<strong>it</strong>. Why? We are told that <strong>we</strong> should ‘pray always.’ One way to do th<strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>is</strong> to have a ‘background tape’ <strong>of</strong> <strong>prayer</strong> running as <strong>we</strong> go through our day. Repeating a sh<strong>or</strong>t<br />

<strong>prayer</strong> <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> type makes <strong>it</strong> part <strong>of</strong> our consciousness, running through our mind, and <strong>the</strong>n r<strong>is</strong>ing to<br />

m<strong>or</strong>e conscious <strong>prayer</strong>. How? The rosary functions as th<strong>is</strong> kind <strong>of</strong> <strong>prayer</strong> and med<strong>it</strong>ation. A<strong>not</strong>her<br />

<strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘Jesus’ <strong>prayer</strong>, popular in Eastern Chr<strong>is</strong>tian<strong>it</strong>y: Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t, son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> living God, have mercy<br />

on me. Some choose a fav<strong>or</strong><strong>it</strong>e psalm verse.<br />

• Making use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘classics’ - <strong>the</strong> trad<strong>it</strong>ional <strong>prayer</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church. Coming from <strong>the</strong> Jew<strong>is</strong>h<br />

synagogue trad<strong>it</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong> church used <strong>the</strong> Psalms and <strong>the</strong> cycle <strong>of</strong> readings in <strong>the</strong> Hebrew Scriptures<br />

from <strong>the</strong> <strong>it</strong>s very beginning. When <strong>the</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>tian Scriptures <strong>we</strong>re collected, <strong>the</strong> whole was<br />

<strong>or</strong>ganized into a cycle. We still make use <strong>of</strong> a cycle <strong>of</strong> <strong>prayer</strong> from <strong>the</strong> Bible. Why? The ‘food’ f<strong>or</strong><br />

one’s <strong>prayer</strong> <strong>is</strong> in communion w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> church throughout <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld. One <strong>is</strong> praying in<br />

communion w<strong>it</strong>h millions <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Catholic Chr<strong>is</strong>tians. How? Some hear <strong>the</strong> Scriptures when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

come to daily mass. Even if you don’t come to <strong>the</strong> Euchar<strong>is</strong>t, you can still read and pray w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong><br />

daily readings. O<strong>the</strong>rs pray <strong>the</strong> Psalms using <strong>the</strong> L<strong>it</strong>urgy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hours. You can find <strong>the</strong> readings at<br />

www.usccb.<strong>or</strong>g/nab and <strong>the</strong> L<strong>it</strong>urgy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hours at www.divine<strong>of</strong>fice.<strong>or</strong>g<br />

• Examen. Th<strong>is</strong> f<strong>or</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>prayer</strong> was developed by St. Ignatius Loyola, as a way to look f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

‘footprints <strong>of</strong> God’ in one’s day and seek help to be a m<strong>or</strong>e fa<strong>it</strong>hful d<strong>is</strong>ciple. Why? Socrates said,<br />

“The unexamined life <strong>is</strong> <strong>not</strong> w<strong>or</strong>th living.” Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>prayer</strong> helps one to see how God has been present,<br />

and also <strong>the</strong> ways that one can live a m<strong>or</strong>e au<strong>the</strong>ntic Chr<strong>is</strong>tian life. How? Briefly, one looks at <strong>the</strong><br />

good <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day, ‘rewinding’ <strong>the</strong> day like a video tape. Thanks God f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> good and look f<strong>or</strong> any<br />

sin <strong>or</strong> failings. Then, ask f<strong>or</strong> God’s help to do better <strong>the</strong> next day.<br />

• Prayers at bedtime. In sleep <strong>we</strong> have comparatively l<strong>it</strong>tle control over our lives. It <strong>is</strong> one time <strong>of</strong><br />

day when <strong>it</strong> seems easiest to place ourselves in God’s hands, in trust. Why? Our lives are in God’s<br />

Page 3 <strong>of</strong> 4

hands all <strong>the</strong> time. It doesn’t hurt to <strong>realize</strong> <strong>it</strong>! How? There <strong>is</strong> no one way to do th<strong>is</strong>. A trad<strong>it</strong>ional<br />

<strong>prayer</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> third canticle in Luke, chapter 2, <strong>the</strong> song <strong>of</strong> Simeon <strong>or</strong> Nunc Dim<strong>it</strong>t<strong>is</strong>:<br />

L<strong>or</strong>d, now you let your servant go in peace; your w<strong>or</strong>d has been fulfilled: my own eyes have seen <strong>the</strong><br />

salvation which you have prepared in <strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> every people: a light to reveal you to <strong>the</strong> nations<br />
