Harper-Gratiot Multi-Service
Center (HGMSC)
Realizing the vision of self-sufficiency.
When Neffertiri Collins arrived at
HGMSC, it was clear that she would
not let her family’s financial crisis get in
the way of her four children’s academic
success. She sought assistance with
food and other basic needs as well as
counseling and support for her children
as they faced unimaginable stress. She
joined NSO’s Home Instruction for
Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY)
program to prepare her younger
children for school. Neffertiri and her
family now have stable, safe housing
and everyone is doing well in school -
including Neffertiri who is studying to
be a nurse.
Located on Detroit’s eastside, HGMSC
provides comprehensive, coordinated
accessible health and human service
programs to the community in one
convenient location. Visitors can receive
assistance accessing state and federal
benefits, select items from a clothing
closet and receive emergency food
vouchers and utility assistance. The
center is also home to NSO’s Home
Instruction for Parents of Preschool
Youngsters (HIPPY), Youth Initiatives
Project (YIP) and Training Department.
In 2012, HGMSC received calls from
more than 12,000 individuals and
families trying to make progress
towards their vision of self-sufficiency.
Each year, HGMSC hosts a community
resource festival, welcoming their
eastside neighbors for a day of family
fun, immunizations, and connections to
needed services.
Home Instruction for Parents
of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY)
Realizing parents’ visions for their
child’s future.
HIPPY empowers parents
as their child’s first teacher
by providing them with
the tools, skills and
confidence they need to
work with their threeto-five
year
old children.
The 30-week program is conducted
in the home with our trained
coordinators. Last year, HIPPY
empowered 145 families to realize
their vision of having a child ready
for school.
HIPPY families celebrated the holidays with a
visit with Santa and gifts for all of the children
and their siblings.
HIPPY students and their families
celebrated completion of the
program and the excitement of
moving on to kindergarten.
