Since 1999, external funding for both research<br />
and sponsored programs at <strong>Lehman</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
has more than tripled, from $8.4 million in 1999<br />
to $26.1 million in 2010. The large increase between<br />
2009 and 2010 was due to the “MATH-<br />
UP” grant, which totaled $7.6 million.<br />
Faculty and Students Alike Win Awards for Their<br />
Professional and Community Contributions<br />
2010 was a banner year for the receipt of awards, from the <strong>College</strong><br />
itself and President Fernández to many faculty members and students.<br />
Here are just a few of them.<br />
<strong>Lehman</strong> <strong>College</strong> was named to the President’s Higher Education Community<br />
Service Honor Roll for the second consecutive year. This is the highest<br />
recognition an institution of higher learning can receive from the Federal<br />
Government for its commitment to volunteering, community service, and civic<br />
engagement.<br />
The Department of Latin American and Puerto Rican Studies<br />
received recognition at “Somos CUNY/SUNY, Somos el Futuro,” in Albany,<br />
on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary and as the first such department<br />
to be established in the U.S.<br />
President Ricardo R. Fernández received the Ninth Annual Latino Trendsetter<br />
Award for his achievements, contributions, leadership, and service to<br />
both the Hispanic and Bronx communities.<br />
Mathematics and Computer Science Professor Jason Behrstock was<br />
awarded a prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, joining earlycareer<br />
scientists, mathematicians, and economists from fifty-six colleges and<br />
universities in the U.S. and Canada.<br />

Senior Alyza Brown was elected as the Undergraduate Student Memberat-Large<br />
of the New York City chapter of the National Association of<br />
Social Workers.<br />
Distinguished Professor of English and former U.S. Poet Laureate<br />
Billy Collins became the seventh recipient of the Nashville Public Library<br />
Literary Award.<br />

students in 2000 to more than 12,000 for the<br />
past two years.<br />
iPhone App Available for <strong>Lehman</strong><br />
<strong>Lehman</strong> announced the availability in 2010 of<br />
a free Apple ® iPhone application that features<br />
news, sports, events, an interactive campus map,<br />
and other <strong>College</strong>-related information. The free<br />
app can be downloaded at the iPhone App store<br />
and will run on v. 3.1.2 or higher<br />
of the phone’s software. It features<br />

Nursing Professors Catherine Alicia Georges and Keville C. Frederickson<br />
were appointed as nursing fellows at the prestigious New York<br />
Academy of Medicine.<br />
Professors Dinu Ghezzo (Music) and William M. Hoffman (Journalism,<br />
Communication, and Theatre) received awards from ASCAP (American Society<br />
of Composers, Authors, and Publishers), adding to the awards they have<br />
previously won from the prestigious professional organization.<br />
Conversations with William M. Hoffman received its second Telly<br />
Award, this time for a show that featured guest David Kaufman, the author<br />
of Doris Day—the Untold Story of the Girl Next Door.<br />
The Irish Voice honored Professor Thomas Ihde (Languages and Literatures)<br />
for the second year in a row as one of the Top 100 Irish educators<br />
in America.<br />
Inside <strong>Lehman</strong> X, a half-hour television program produced by a team of<br />
students, faculty, and staff, won its third consecutive Hermes Creative Award,<br />
bringing to eighteen the total number of awards the series has won since it<br />
began in 2002.<br />
Professor Andrei Jitianu (Chemistry) received the prestigious Feliks Gross<br />
Endowment Award, which recognizes outstanding research conducted by<br />
junior faculty in the humanities or sciences at CUNY.<br />
