Variable Item #1: POSITIVE SELF-CONCEPT<br />

This variable assesses the protégé’s confidence, self-esteem, <strong>in</strong>dependence, and determ<strong>in</strong>ation, all vital components<br />

of future achievement and success.<br />

Positive Evidence Negative Evidence<br />

Does the protégé feel confident of mak<strong>in</strong>g it through<br />

graduation? Does the protégé express any reason he/she might not<br />

complete school or succeed and atta<strong>in</strong> his/her<br />

goals?<br />

Does the protégé make positive statements about him/<br />

herself? Does the protégé express concerns that other students<br />

are better than he/she is?<br />

Does the protégé expect to achieve his/her goals and<br />

per<strong>for</strong>m well <strong>in</strong> academic and non-academic areas? Does the protégé expect to have marg<strong>in</strong>al grades?<br />

Does the protégé provide evidence how he/she will<br />

atta<strong>in</strong> his/her goals? Does the protégé have trouble balanc<strong>in</strong>g his/her personal<br />

and academic life?<br />

Does the protégé l<strong>in</strong>k his/her <strong>in</strong>terests and experiences<br />

with his/her goals?<br />

Does the protégé appear to be avoid<strong>in</strong>g new challenges<br />

or situations?
