There are multiple answers to this question and this is only one possible response:<br />

The author is trying to understand how the camp experience and what Vladek had to do to survive may<br />

have shaped his personality and made him develop the qualities that have driven him to rage and<br />

frustration; he is suggesting that the camp experience may help to explain his miserliness, his selfishness<br />

and self-centeredness, his wanting to make use of every item beyond reasonable limits. All of these were<br />

qualities that helped him to survive, but then he seems to have not been able to adjust to conditions not<br />

requiring those same qualities. The author is also trying to come to terms with the fact that merely<br />

surviving the camps does not make a person a hero or a saint, because survival did not rest upon human<br />

qualities, but upon a combination of qualities and pure luck. The conditions in the camps required<br />

people to develop or nurture qualities that were not necessarily moral or “good,” and this situation<br />

often took its toll on those who had to endure these conditions in order to survive.<br />

12. Why do you think the author chose to tell this story in comic book format, and to use animals<br />
