1938 to 1963 –
utterly complete!
Distinguished by premium grade quality, the 1938-63
Shilling & Florin Collection forms an important, utterly
comprehensive overview of Australia’s highest standard
predecimal coinage denominations.
Increasingly scarce, with the larger, heavier silver
denominations naturally favoured by precious metal
profiteers, the 1938-63 Shilling & Florin Collection features
53 coins in all. This includes every date and mintmark!
Highlighted by such luminaries as the rare 1939 Florin
(valued at $110 in VF) and 1951 & 1954 commemorative
florins (combined value of $125 in Unc), the set also
features the 1946 & 1947 Florins ($70 apiece in Unc),
1940 Shilling ($52 in Unc), unique Perth Mint 1946
Shilling ($38 in aUnc) and the 1952 Shilling ($62 in Unc).
Spending months tracking down only those coins we
consider to be in premium grade, this presentation
is notable for the seldom seen quality. Grading from
Very Fine to strictly Uncirculated, this comprehensive, historically
invaluable 53-coin presentation is set within protective display pages, and
then housed in an album.
A fantastic opportunity to create a complete collection in an instant – a
collection that is increasingly scarce in premium grade – you must act now.
We have only five complete 53-coin shilling and florin sets available.
AUSTRALIA’S
BIGGEST COIN
Australia’s biggest issued coin type, the
Silver Crown was issued as a Coronation
commemorative in 1937, and then
somewhat surprisingly issued again in
1938 – albeit with a tiny mintage of just
101,600. Measuring 38.5mm, with each coin
comprising nearly 1oz of sterling silver, we
have both dates in stock!
Unpopular as circulation coins due to their
imposing size, but immensely popular with
collectors for the very same reason, we have
the 1937 Crown in VF, and the rare 1938
Crown in F-VF – each set in an
illustrated card.
Ø28.5mm
The first – and the best…
The 1927 Canberra Florin was Australia’s
very first commemorative coin – and many
argue our most beautifully designed. An
eye-catching coin in any grade, you now
have the chance to secure this landmark
predecimal type officially slabbed and
graded at MS63 – the equivalent of Choice
Uncirculated quality!
Based in the USA, Professional Coin Grading
Service (PCGS) is one of the most respected
sources of third party authentication in the
world. As the 1927 Canberra Florins on offer
here have been authenticated by PCGS, these
particular examples are guaranteed as genuine,
guaranteed to be in original condition, and
guaranteed to be in premium grade Choice
Uncirculated.
Issued to celebrate the opening of Australia’s
then new Parliament house in Canberra,
it is indeed a great pleasure to be able to
give our clients the chance to own such an
important coin in such an outstanding state of
preservation. Superbly detailed, lustrous sterling
silver coins, it is remarkable that PCGS-graded
Choice Uncirculated 1927 Canberra
Florins could be available at such an
affordable price.
Australian
coinage
Whether a newcomer to the intriguing world of numismatics, or a discerning
seasoned collector, there are coins that we can only ever dream of obtaining.
Filling the gap created by the astronomical prices of the extremely rare originals,
Macquarie Mint has worked with international experts in the field of Australian
numismatics to create the ultimate tribute collection – a recreation of our nation’s
most iconic rarities.
FAITHFUL TO THE ORIGINALS!
Desired for its limited availability, quality of strike and rich history, the History of
Australian Coinage Collection is distinguished by faithful recreations of the obverse
and reverse designs of original Australian rarities – many of which are finished in
silver or gold! The perfect way to capture Australia’s rich numismatic history, this
affordable, comprehensive collection is a must-have for all collectors!
The rare 1856 Type I
Australia’s first half sovereign type, struck at our first
official mint, the 1856 Sydney Mint Half Sovereign
is a key rarity – sought after by gold collectors
across the world.
As with most half sovereigns, the 1856 Sydney Mint
Half Sovereign Type I had a tiny mintage, with a mere
470,000 struck. With so many coins either lost or melted
for the gold in the 159 years since issue, and the half
sovereign suffering a much higher circulation rate than
the full sovereign, it will come as no surprise that the
pool of examples in better grade is minuscule.
This distinctive, vital colonial date is therefore
seldom offered in any grade, and considered
extremely rare in Very Fine, as presented here.
1856 SYDNEY MINT
SOVEREIGN TYPE I VF
AK308
Australia’s first gold sovereigns, and physical evidence of the nation’s golden heritage,
the Sydney Mint Sovereign Series lies at the heart of Australian numismatics.
In part, the long-term popularity of the Sydney Mint Sovereign is due to the highly distinctive
designs – designs that were never employed on any other Imperial sovereign. The obverse
bears a one-of-a-kind portrait of Queen Victoria, but it is the reverse that commands most
attention. A radical departure from the standard British sovereign designs, this revered
colonial type features ‘Australia’, ‘Sydney Mint’ and ‘One Sovereign’ proudly emblazoned
on the reverse.
Imbued with a unique history, beauty and importance, the 22-carat gold Sydney Mint
Sovereigns are hotly pursued, regardless of the grade. Gold Rush history that you
can hold in your hands, our recent acquisition of a small batch of early Aussie
gold means that we can offer the 1857-70 Sydney Mint Sovereign Type II in
highly collectable Fine condition – dates of our choice.
10

First of its kind
The first coin in the series that replaced
the Sydney Mint Sovereign on p10, we
are delighted to present the very first
Shield Sovereign struck at the Sydney Mint
– the famed 1871S!
Forced to change the Sydney Mint Sovereign
designs to match imperial sovereigns, the
Sydney Mint chose to strike St George and Shield
Sovereigns from 1871. Carrying the superb Young
Head portrait, this splendid sovereign type is most
notable for the armorial magnificence of the reverse.
Scarce, particularly in the superb Extremely Fine
quality offered here, this landmark ‘first-of-its-kind’
type is remarkably affordable.
Marvellous Melbourne
Exploding into life as a result of the Gold Rush, and second only to London
as the British Empire’s biggest city, the capital of Victoria was known as
‘Marvellous Melbourne’ during the 1880s. The perfect symbol of these heady
days of prosperity, we have the Melbourne Mint’s scarce 1885M Sovereign
in stock – in Extremely Fine!
An authentic artefact of a truly golden era for the city, the distinctive
Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria and Pistrucci’s glorious St George
Tiny mintage!
Struck at the height of the Great Depression, the 1930M Sovereign
proved to be the penultimate date of the Australian 1855-1931
Sovereign Series. We have this sought after date in about
Uncirculated to Uncirculated quality!
Notorious for the tiny mintage, a mere 77,000
sovereigns were struck at the Melbourne Mint in 1930
– making it Australia’s second-lowest mintage sovereign
issue. Scarce in aUnc-Unc condition, and one of only three
dates to carry the Modified George V portrait, the 1930M
Sovereign is a surprisingly affordable acquisition at less than $900.
