Executive Summary
This is the intermediate version of the Dissemination, Exploitation and Standardization Plan for
COMMUNE. It describes results achieved in the first half of the project as well as plans for the
second half of the project.
COMMUNE aims to investigate the management of networks in the presence of uncertainty.
Uncertainty arise from both the on-going traffic delivery process and the management process
and can be sue to many factors. COMMUNE will investigate how cognitive management
techniques can be used to mitigate the effects of uncertainty in the operation of networks.
COMMUNE will develop a number of usage scenarios for a limited number of network types
and will specify the types and sources of uncertainty in these cases. It will subsequently define
target cognitive functions and algorithms to provide solutions to these problems. The
combination of these knowledge representation choices and the overall scenarios will inform and
guide the design and implementation of the COMMUNE cognitive network management
framework. COMMUNE addresses primarily
Self organizing networks in LTE including the management of femtocells
Internet of Things
Broadband networks in the form of Fibre to the Home (FTTH)
To achieve widespread dissemination the project’s strategy
1. Identifies the key receivers of the COMMUNE results. Amongst others these include
a. Telecom Operators
b. Equipment Vendors
c. Research Community
d. Standardization bodies
e. Policy Makers
2. Identifies the channels through which to deliver results to these recipients, including
a. Workshops and other events
b. Conferences
c. Cooperation with other projects
These plans describe activities pertinent to various network technologies (e.g. SON) and
individual project work packages.
In addition to the above information dissemination the deliverable also
1. Defines the standardization bodies though which to deliver COMMUNE relevant
findings. The plan details the particular subcommittees where appropriate. Key
standardization groups include 3GPP and IETF.
2. Sets out the exploitation plans of the individual partners .In these plans industrial partners
identify which network types and problem areas are of particular interest for product
development and elaborate at a high level potential product roadmaps for their future
development. Academic partners describe the types of research knowledge which they
intend to further develop and enhance through project participation
The final version of this deliverable (M30) will describe the actual results delivered also in terms
of the above activities and including the project formal deliverables.
1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Scope of the project
The problem addressed by COMMUNE is how to manage networks in the presence of
uncertainty. The solution approach is based on the use of cognitive networking techniques. To
complement this approach COMMUNE adopts a methodology driven by requirements based on
the definition of representative scenarios. These scenarios will be specified by a number of
dimensions to identify causes of the uncertainty in the networks. Based on this analysis, a
taxonomy of typical or likely types of uncertainty will be constructed and this in turn will be
used to select appropriate choices of knowledge representation, algorithms, inference and
learning techniques, etc., to enable problem solutions. The combination of these knowledge
representation choices and the overall scenarios will inform and guide the design and
implementation of the COMMUNE cognitive network management framework. Finally, to
validate the COMMUNE approach a small number of applications will be tested, addressing two
independent scenarios: FTTH and LTE access networks. These approaches will be deployed and
validated, using both simulation and experimentation, on one or more test beds.
1.2 Scope of the Dissemination WP
The role of WP6 is
To specify the COMMUNE outputs for dissemination
To identify the receivers for the output
To specify mechanisms to deliver those outputs
To define a planned set of activities to enable that delivery
To monitor, follow up and report on the execution of the dissemination activities.
2 DISSEMINATION STRATEGY
COMMUNE aims to have a continuous and on-going dissemination process with high visibility
in academic and both the industrial and academic communities. The project aims to seek a
position in which the COMMUNE project is seen as the best technical source for the future of
SON for the industry. An essential part of this dissemination strategy is the identification of key
receiver categories for COMMUNE outputs and the targeting of these groups via appropriate
disseminations activities. The following chapters therefore describe the target groups and the
dissemination activities that will be employed. As COMMUNE will not exist in a vacuum the
project will also monitor activities and occurrences in other fora and in the market place and
adjust its dissemination strategy and targets appropriately.
2.1 Dissemination Target Groups
2.1.2 Telecom Operators
The battle to reduce costs and streamline CAPEX and OPEX is an on-going fact of life for
Telecom operators. Additionally, maintaining and increasing average revenue per user,
minimizing churn and creating new opportunities for cross selling and upselling are important to
maintain a competitive edge. COMMUNE contributes all of these goals through exacting more
efficient usage of network and service resources and also through ensuring high user QoE via
intelligent media delivery. COMMUNE will disseminate information to operators through
publications, industry events, future network products, and, importantly, through standardisation
submissions.
2.1.3 Equipment and Technology Vendors
As with their service provider end-customer, equipment vendors are constantly seeking to have
more flexible, intelligent and easy to use equipment offerings. Outputs from COMMUNE will
inform equipment providers of new technology possibilities to influence their product design and
roadmaps and will also increase their awareness of the drivers for their telecom customers.
Dissemination will be primarily by means of technical fora, Celtic events, standardisation and
publication
2.1.4 Research Communities
The research community encompasses researchers in academia, public bodies and companies.
Outputs of interest will be new architectures and protocols for hybrid cognitive management,
algorithms for distributed fault resolution and data mining and machine-to-machine
communication. Dissemination is mainly via publications at conferences and through journals
and magazines as well as cooperation with other research projects.
2.1.5 Policy Makers
Policy makers are concerned to ensure that societal goals are achieved through judicious use of
the telecom services, networks and assets. Policy makers are interested in outputs which can
influence these factors as e.g. in the dynamic allocation of bandwidth. Dissemination to policy
makers is mainly through industry and Celtic events.
COMMUNE Celtic Project: Deliverable-D.6.3: issued on (M15) 30.01.2013 Page 7 of 23
2.1.6 Standardization Bodies
Standardization is a critical activity in the telecom industry and essential to enable interworking
between equipment form different providers. Contribution to standardization bodies is absolutely
essential for COMMUNE to ensure its outputs are meaningfully absorbed into the greater
telecom ecosystem. These activities are described in greater detail in a later chapter.
dissemination deliverables and events.
2.2.1.2 Marketing Material
The project has prepared a project overview leaflet according to a standard Celtic template.
This is available on the website and will be disseminated at all events. The project has also
prepared a slide set and posters for the mid-term review.
2.2.2 Internal workshops
COMMUNE will arrange workshops to which relevant stakeholders are invited. The internal
workshops act as events where the partners share their results coming from the project itself as
well as other work related to the topics relevant to the project. The workshops will also be
attended by relevant external participants as keynote speakers or presenters to enrich the
workshop contents. In order to simplify logistics, these workshops are arranged together with
PCC meetings, and kept short in duration (1/2 to 1 day at most).
Two workshops will take place; one will be held in conjunction with the Celtic mid-term review
(M15) in Finland on Feb 18/19 2012 and another before the project ends (M30).
2.2.3 Participation to major international events
The key international events identified by the COMMUNE consortium through which
disseminate information about the project and its results are:
Celtic events 2013 & 2014: The main objective of the Celtic event is to present the
current status, the available results, and developments of the running Celtic projects, thus,
the COMMUNE project should be presented there.
COMMUNE will participate in the 2013 Celtic event in Turkey on March 6/7 2013 and
will demonstrate a number of technologies being developed in the project.
Future Network & Mobile Summit (http://www.futurenetworksummit.eu) 2013 &
2014: Supported by the European Commission and the Net!Works European Technology
Platform, Future Network and MobileSummit integrates high-level industry/policy
plenary sessions that discuss strategic issues for Future Networks with high quality
technical/scientific tracks and workshop sessions. Technical/scientific tracks present
papers that showcase original results and hot topics in all areas of mobile, wireless and
fixed broadband communications systems and networks.
Commune has proposed a joint workshop with FP7 projects Univerself and Semafour for
the summit and is awaiting response from the organising committee
EU Future Internet research coordination (FIA)
The European Union coordinates Future Internet research activities. The most complete
source of information source about such research is European Future Internet
portal: http://www.future-internet.eu/home.html. Part of the activity is a periodic
organization of Future Internet Assembly (FIA) events – twice per year. Every year FIA
publishes a book with FIA submitted papers. FIA is active from 2008 and brings together
most of EU projects that are focused on Future Internet (ICT programme of FP7). FIA is
open to all researchers (from EU or not) engaged in Future Internet research. FIA has also
created several Working groups. One of them, Management and Service-aware
Networking Architectures (MANA) is of special interest of COMMUNE. COMMUNE
members will attend FIA events and when COMMUNE concepts will become mature,
they will be presented there.
Scientific events: The COMMUNE project aims to maximize the project’s visibility and
impact through showcasing its results in suitable scientific venues. Besides articles
published in relevant conferences and journals, the consortium could find at least one
major event (e.g. top-tier conferences) in which a track or workshop is aligned with the
project’s scope and present its research topics and results through e.g. scientific papers,
panels, and demonstrators.
2.2.4 Cooperation with other projects in COMMUNE’s areas of interest
The COMMUNE project should coordinate with other European and national projects working
on cognitive network management mechanisms and related technologies. There are several on-
COMMUNE Celtic Project: Deliverable-D.6.3: issued on (M15) 30.01.2013 Page 10 of 23
going projects in Europe studying similar topics to COMMUNE, thus, it makes sense to follow
the progress and results of such projects. Therefore, COMMUNE aims to keep track of the
progress of other relevant projects and to share results when appropriate.
Currently, the following projects have been identified as potential for such coordination and
cooperation by the COMMUNE consortium:
The EU FP7 UniverSelf project (http://www.univerself-project.eu) aims at overcoming
the growing management complexity of future networking systems and reducing the
barriers that complexity and ossification pose to further growth.
COMMUNE has initiated a joint workshop proposal with Univerself
Celtic CIER - Converged Infrastructure for Emerging Regions project
(http://www.celtic-initiative.org/Projects/Celtic-projects/Call7/CIER/cier-default.asp)
aims at designing and implementing energy-efficient, robust, reliable and affordable wide
heterogeneous wireless mesh networks to connect geographically very large areas in the
challenged environment of the remote parts of Europe and Africa.
COMMUNE members in Finland will give an overview of COMMUNE to CIER during
the second phase of the project.
Follow up project for EU FP7 project Semafour– (Self-Optimisation and self-
ConfiguRATion in wirelEss networkS.). Semafour is focused to self-x functionality in
LTE networks.
COMMUNE has proposed a joint workshop with Semafour to be held in mid 2013
TIVIT IoT SRA (http://www.internetofthings.fi) is a new TEKES research program
aiming to create solutions in the Internet of Things research space. This includes basic
protocol research, experimentation with very low energy devices and the related
standardization work. IoT SRA will also apply the developed protocols to vertical
scenarios and testbeds. The results will be closely followed up in the COMMUNE
project.
COMMUNE member Ericsson gave an overview of the project to TIVIT members in
3 EXPLOITATION
COMMUNE will put emphasis on this activity in the second half
3.1 Market Analysis
Telecommunications networks have traditionally evolved through standardization. The
environment for technology implementation both in terms of technology evolution and market
needs has been deterministic. Robust, high performance technologies have been developed and
implemented based on the evolution of the standards. A new trend emerging with the network is
increasing complexity. Multiple radio technologies - 2G, 3G and 4G - are deployed
simultaneously. The cost of technology is the key reason why old standards live a long lifetime.
2G is optimal for voice and SMS, and global de-facto network for roaming customers, 3G for
global mobile data delivery and 4G for very high speed, low latency mobile data. Emerging
M2M technologies also will need a long life time of supporting network technologies.
The number of standards, more than five billion mobile consumers and high growth of M2M
applications call for better understanding of the market behaviour. Obviously automation is the
fundament to lower the cost of network operation. However traditional industrial automation
operates only in predictable environment. The market behaviour with billions of people,
thousands of different devices, millions of new applications and emerging M2M industry have
made the market very unpredictable. Rather than a complete understanding of the technology
environment and evolution, sensitivity to market behaviour and fast response mechanisms have
become drivers for the evolution of automation. Automation also needs to operate with limited
information under uncertainty of the market conditions.
The new business environment calls for learning both organizationally and technically. When
combined with automation, learning solutions introduce new levels of intelligence in the
networks. Therefore, rather than just automation, these new learning solutions with intelligence
define cognitive solutions, involving both cognitive network elements and cognitive network
layer creating a cognitive network for communications and creation, delivery and access of
information. Such information includes for example where consumers roam, what applications
they use, how content they are with the services. Likewise information creation and
communications in M2M applications will increase the need for sensitivity and quality. All this
information can be used in business development and operations. Additional new information
also will also measure the success of deployment new innovations, whether consumer or
machine centric.
The project will analyse expected business benefits and ways to exploit for each use cases.
Market analysis for cognitive network management under uncertainty requires analysis of
following:
1. Market definition: new, substitute, size in maturity
2. Business potential: growth potential, growth, sustainability in time
3. Market segmentation
4. Ecosystem: value network, value creation mechanisms, players, roles and positions, basis
of competition (perfect competition, oligopoly, monopoly, HHI index)
COMMUNE Celtic Project: Deliverable-D.6.3: issued on (M15) 30.01.2013 Page 15 of 23
5. Addressable market for private enterprises
6. Entry and exit barriers
7. Market structure: global vs. local
8. Role of regulation in market definition, licensing and legislation
Any analysis at an early phase of market birth is qualitative by nature rather than quantative.
Current early state market analysis can be based on substitution. For example, how many jobs
globally/locally are impacted by cognitive solutions. What is the job market size currently, how
large cognitive network management market is created by job substitution and how much value
can different players capture in competition of the offering. If possible, capital investment needs,
innovation potential, competence development requirements, characteristics of cyclicty,
partnerships and IPR licensing schemes etc. could be estimated to give more insight in market
formulation. When market emerges, growth figures will become available and cash flows will be
predictable, therefore better quantitative analysis can be performed later.
3.2 Partner Exploitation Plans
3.2.1 Telenium
For Telenium, COMMUNE will mean the incorporation of new capabilities in its Managed
Services portfolio in three relevant points:
For both big organisations and especially for small and medium customers, COMMUNE will
allow Telenium to market services with a higher value at competitive costs, helping those
present day customers to cope with their network and systems management in more effective
ways.
Secondly, COMMUNE will allow Telenium to expand its Managed Services customer base
to new customers, which will benefit from network and systems management services, but
cannot afford the licensing and consulting costs and complexity of present day management
tools implementations.
As a third point, COMMUNE will allow Telenium to define and market new Managed
Services, such as product-service bundles and end-to-end management services. Furthermore,
COMMUNE will guarantee that Telenium will cope with new network and systems
technologies deployments.
Telenium’s exploitation plan will then address these three directions, with a specific focus on
augmenting its small and medium companies’ market penetration.
3.2.2 SistelNetworks
The improvements and innovations contemplated in COMMUNE, in relation to the LTE
femtocells currently available in the market, are of great international relevance. The world’s
first technical solution proposed in COMMUNE is revolutionary in terms of the use of cognitive
radio algorithms, control strategies of connectivity and control systems and monitoring of
femtocells and femtocellular networks. Therefore, the solution proposed in this project entails an
COMMUNE Celtic Project: Deliverable-D.6.3: issued on (M15) 30.01.2013 Page 16 of 23
important enhancement of femtocell operation and a significant reduction in energy consumption
and management costs for network operators. For all the above, the result of COMMUNE is
perfect to create a marketable product of world-wide impact, because of the novelty of
development and enormous international interest in the field of mobile communications systems.
Hence, for SistelNetworks S.L. this project will allow the company to deploy advanced
femtocells in enterprise environments, niche market in which the company is specialized. In
addition, the company will have a femtocell device highly competitive which is expected to have
a significant market penetration.
3.2.3 Telnet Redes Inteligentes
The strategic and commercial objectives of COMMUNE are very important to the approach
Telnet Redes Inteligentes is taking in having equipment that will enable operators to deploy its
fiber network to:
a. Facilitate the location of points of failure in the deployment of the operator, or those
points where the installation and commissioning are delayed or even canceled.
b. Technological solutions that will solve or alleviate these problems, which go through
alternatives to current solutions that aired in the impossibility of giving a contingency solution to
the explosion-induced functional uncertainty.
These guidelines are broken down into more specific objectives:
Getting a new family of GPON FTTH equipment that would enable our teams more
competitive and attractive to operators due to the cognitive capacity is to implement
them.
Create management tools GPON FTTH networks that avoid future cost overruns in
operating (OPEX) and infrastructure (CAPEX) uncertainty caused by the complexity of
emerging technologies and their implementations to operators. Allowed to compete with
other manufacturers including added functionality and highly valued by operators.
Diagnostic tools that enable to anticipate the problems underlying the deployment of the
operators or to diagnose these problems quickly and accurately.
Locate specific solutions and innovative, patent susceptible to enable the operator to
provide a solution that allows unattended operation cost savings and implementation of
GPON FTTH deployments.
Almost, we want to collaborate with other companies that enable us to align / share trends,
technologies and avoiding decisions and anticipating risks.
3.2.4 Temida
Temida is a SME with experiences in software development and constructing knowledge
intensive decision support systems that are often used in the fields that require handling of
uncertainty. We plan to improve our skills and abilities in implementing algorithms for cognitive
networks and their management (self-organization) in the context of probabilistic frameworks
and uncertainty. The findings and results related to the COMMUNE project will be documented
and published as papers in thematic conferences or journals. By gaining experience in
COMMUNE, Temida also plans to become involved in other local and regional
telecommunication projects that require similar expertise. We plan to exploit the acquired
knowledge in software construction projects in several other private and public sector domains.
3.2.5 Athlone Institute of Technology
The Software research Institute at Athlone Institute of Technology is involved in the creation of
innovative solutions in the areas of connected media delivery and adaptation and in infrastructure
performance management solutions in a variety of vertical fields. Within the COMMUNE
project SRI will seek to develop and enhance its knowledge in the following areas:
Algorithms and approaches to P2P media adaptation
Development of machine learning in resource constrained devices
SW design and architectures for distributed machine leaning
SRI expects to exploit this knowledge by developing a leading position in the development of
machine learning in constrained devices scenarios and to apply this knowledge and competence
in a variety of commercial and industrial sectors such as smart grid, telecom, health, automotive
and so on.
3.2.6 Daysha Consulting
Daysha Consulting is an innovation centric services company with a specific focus on using
large yet incomplete data sets to support decision-making. Our customers operate in a range
verticals including telecommunications, aerospace, and financial services.
Through COMMUNE Daysha will seek to develop and enhance knowledge and expertise in the
following areas:
Generalised process model for applying probabilistic reasoning and machine learning
algorithms
Generalised evaluation framework for working with probabilistic reasoning algorithms
SW architecture and designs for working with real-time streamed data
Mechanisms to co-ordinate autonomous intelligent agents
Daysha hope to combine the experiences and expertise developed as part of COMMUNE with
those being developed in SPITFIRE (a parallel FP7 project focussed on managing uncertainty in
the Internet of Things) and EVOLVE (a Daysha led research project delivering decision support
in space mission feasibility analysis). Through these efforts Daysha aim to maximise the domain
applicability of COMMUNE results. Daysha also intend to use COMMUNE as basis to broaden
its own market share in the emergent LTE market place. Daysha has strong links with Irish
operators (Eircom, Vodafone, O2, and Three) and Irish based equipment vendors (Ericsson and
Alcatel-Lucent). The COMMUNE project will allow Daysha to leverage these links to forge new
business with these organisations.
3.2.7 Nokia Siemens Networks OY
Nokia Siemens Networks aims to exploit project results in future communications networks,
such as further evolution of LTE networks and their network management systems. COMMUNE
results are seen as enablers for design of cognitive network management features in Nokia
Siemens Networks’ products. Vision is that more and more cognition will be added to network
COMMUNE Celtic Project: Deliverable-D.6.3: issued on (M15) 30.01.2013 Page 18 of 23
management as a part of automation. Therefore, it is vital interest of Nokia Siemens Networks to
further strengthen understanding and knowledge in this area. In COMMUNE, NSN’s focus is in
network management automation based on knowledge based reasoning and machine learning for
LTE and its evolution. NSN aims to produce 3GPP and TMF standardization contributions and
publications based on the project’s results.
3.2.8 VTT
As a contract research organization, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland seeks to create a
wide range of technology and provide applied research services. By contributing to the
COMMUNE solutions, VTT will further improve its expertise in the field of telecommunication
networks. The enhanced knowledge and competence will be exploited in setting up new projects
with national and European partners, both in the academic and industrial world. VTT also aims
at transferring the knowledge built in the COMMUNE project to the industrial partners for
further development and commercialization of the results. Moreover, the project’s results will be
published in various scientific forums in the form of conference and journal papers. Besides
acting as an efficient tool for dissemination and providing visibility for VTT and its expertise,
the publications are also intended to support the on-going Ph.D. works of VTT’s project
personnel.
3.2.9 Magister Solutions
Magister Solutions Ltd. is a consulting company specialized in wireless systems research. Its
core competence team has long traditions in wireless communications, especially in development
of system simulators supporting standardization activities. Its personnel are active in scientific
community and it has reached a trusted reputation in Finnish ICT sector. Its strategy is to
strengthen its position and grow internationally and therefore needs to stay close to the
international research activities within its core competence. The COMMUNE project fulfils this
need. We expect the project to have a clear positive impact on company’s service offering. We
also plan to produce publications based on project’s results.
3.2.10 Ericsson
Near-future communication networks will have to deal with rapidly growing amount of
communicating devices e.g. sensors and actuators. Soon the management of those kinds of
devices and networks becomes a considerable technical and monetary challenge. The main
objective for Ericsson is to develop such mechanisms that can be used either for preventing or
alleviating the aforementioned problem. These mechanisms should be able to bring self*
properties for the devices in M2M networks. Another objective for Ericsson is to study
mechanisms for implementing the M2M and Internet of Things scenarios in the “Selforganizing”
& “cognitive” networks. The focus is on effects to LTE and required
interconnections between LTE and other networks, e.g. localized sensor networks. There are
different architectural alternatives for M2M communication. Ericsson will mainly focus on a
M2M gateway solution interconnecting M2M devices to the mobile access i.e. LTE. The work
will be conducted through academic publications, prototyping and standardization activities
(3GPP and IETF). Proof-of-concept demonstrations will be organized to validate and
communicate the results and to get feedback from potential end users. Ericsson plans to
COMMUNE Celtic Project: Deliverable-D.6.3: issued on (M15) 30.01.2013 Page 19 of 23
prototype some of the functionality also in its proprietary product platforms. It is expected that
some of the results will end up in products in 3-5 years perspective.
3.2.11 Elisa
Elisa expects that it will be able to apply some of the achieved operational enhancements
invented in the COMMUNE project for improving its high competitiveness in the local markets
and to further improve its excellent service quality. Even shorter reaction times for service breakdowns
enabled through automated troubleshooting are one of the key expectations for Elisa.
Moreover, through the operational improvements Elisa expects to increase its competitiveness
with the help of further OPEX reductions. Finally, any additional results that could be turned,
e.g., into new service offerings, or for more efficient methodologies for QoS, and especially QoE
monitoring, are seen extremely beneficial.
During the project Elisa expects to have information and view of novel telecommunication
technology implementation plans, especially from the aspects of LTE networks, M2M
technologies, and femtocells. During the project the performance of Elisa’s network might be
analysed and enhanced by the tools and methodology developed in the project.
3.2.12 Telekomunikacja Polska
Orange Labs Poland is a unit of Telekomunikacja Polska (TP) which is the leader of the
telecommunication’s market in Poland and is also the member TP Group. The main goal of the
whole group is to implement the 4G/LTE technology in the network by the end of 2015. New
technology will significantly increase the complexity of network itself - particularly in
management operations. Necessity of cooperation with legacy systems: GSM and UMTS and
augmentation of overall number of network elements causes that traditional network
management will be less effective than whenever and will increase OA&M costs. Progressive
depreciation of ARPU forces the reduction of OPEX where network management figures as one
of the most important factor. Thereupon TP Group has spotted the big opportunity of autonomic
network management, especially in the area of self-configuration, self-diagnosis and selfoptimization
(i.e. automated troubleshooting). Our interests are focused on commercial solutions
covering cognitive network management aspects as well as indirect solutions such as
standardized monitoring interfaces, reference architectures and cognitive management
algorithms that will give us opportunity to develop ourselves the dedicated management
solutions exactly suited to our needs. Last but not least QoS and QoE are also very important
because TP Group aims for continuously improvement of network performance that will increase
overall satisfaction of our customers. In this field, built-in self-* network mechanisms will
reduce failures in network and will enhance perceived services’ quality.
4 STANDARDIZATION
4.1 Candidate Standardization Bodies
4.1.1 3GPP
There has been no participation in 3GPP during the first half of the project as appropriate
inputs to standardisation will not available until the second half. Original plans to contribute to
the RAN2 and RAN3 tracks have been dropped after these activities were not considered any
longer to be relevant for dissemination.
Standards contributions will be made to 3GPP SA5 based on research results and identified
standardization need. SA5 standardization contributions are made in case the developed concept
would require interaction between network elements and the network management system.
Table 6 shows SA5 schedule for 2013 and planned contributions by COMMUNE working
packages (indicative – actual contributions will be decided when results are available and
standardization status known).
4.1.2 ETSI
4.1.2.1 Autonomic network engineering for the self-managing Future Internet
(AFI)
An overview of the COMMUNE project and the GARSON architecture was made to AFI
representatives at the management of Emerging Networks and Services 2012 in California in
December 2012.
This ETSI work group deals with design of generic autonomic/self-managing network
architecture as reference model for engineering the future Internet and as such is concerned with
aspects of cognitive management.
COMMUNE will contribute inputs to the main AFI thread and to specific work items that
address the same networks domains as COMMUNE..
4.1.3 Broadband Forum
There was no project activity in this group during the first half of the project.
Cognitive management of IoT/M2M networks can be facilitated with the use of TR-069 protocol.
The conceptual extension relating IoT/M2M networking scenarios will be contributed to
Broadband Forum standardization specifically to the BroadbandHome WG.
4.1.3.1 BroadbandHome
The Scope of BroadbandHome WG is to maintain and evolve the TR-069 CPE WAN
Management Protocol (CWMP) including to:
Enhance its capabilities at all stages of the CPE remote management lifecycle: Autoconfiguration,
service provisioning, firmware management, diagnostics, fault and
performance monitoring
Develop and specify new CPE device models (including XML schema) to broaden the
range of devices for which TR-069 can be used
Extend home networking device specifications for emerging network interfaces and
protocols
Use remote CPE management to facilitate improved energy efficiency
COMMUNE will contribute GARSON requirements for TR-069 between M2M GW the
network management element later in the second half of the project when GARSON interfaces
AMON-L and ACT-L interfaces better defined
4.1.4 IETF
In the first half of the project COMMUNE contributed to the preparation of the following
Internet drafts in the Homenet and ospf working groups – Table 8 Participation in the
